FROM THE

EDITOR EDITOR & PUBLISHER

Our Schools

Tina Eichner BUSINESS MANAGER

Another summer has flown by and in a few short weeks it will be time for teachers and students to head back to school. There is certainly heightened anticipation for all this year as school resumes in a more normal fashion for the first time in a while.

And so, as part of our continued Broomfield at 60 series, this month we look back to the beginnings of the local school systems including Broomfield’s cottage schools of the late 1950s and early 1960s and a longer look at education in the area dating back to the early 1900s with a development timeline of many of the schools that serve Broomfield today. Once again, I would like to thank our friends at Broomfield’s museums for access to the history collection and help with preparing some of this month’s content.

O N O U R COV E R On our cover you see a photo of the Old Westlake Schoolhouse on Lowell Blvd. near the Paul Derda Recreation Center; a historic building that today is privately owned and houses office space. The building was built in 1902 and was one of the first schools for area residents.

As I was putting this issue together, I recalled my own Broomfield school history note. I graduated from Broomfield High School in 1988. My class had the distinction of attending four different schools in four years. In my case, I attended Kohl Elementary through sixth grade which was followed by a one-year stop at Broomfield Junior High School for seventh grade (that was the last year it operated). The following year the new Broomfield Heights Middle School opened to much fanfare. It was one of the first of the new middle school concept schools in the area. And in ninth grade my class moved on to Broomfield High School. So, I was a Kohl Colt, a Broomfield Viking, a BHMS Falcon, and then a Broomfield Eagle. Eagle is the one that stuck. Once an Eagle, Always an Eagle; so the saying goes. If you catch me around town on a Saturday, I am quite likely to be wearing Eagles’ garb, either closet relics of mine or my husband’s or possibly something one of our daughters left when they went on to college. I just can’t part with these t-shirts and sweatshirts – there is something about the good old blue and white! It takes me back to a simpler time centered around community, fun, sports, and friends. Growing up and going to school in Broomfield was truly a great experience. No matter your school, your colors, or your mascot – I wish all kids, families, teachers, and staff an amazing year!

BUSY FAMILIES

WATCHING OUR

BABIES FLY

Here we are again, getting ready for school to start in a few weeks. I thought summer flew by last year when my calendar was empty … but this busy summer was gone in a blink. I have such mixed emotions this time of year. I’m excited for the kids to get back to school in a “normal” way, but I am sad for me, knowing I won’t see them as much this year. I absolutely loved having them home more this past school year. I will always cherish that extra time we had together. Speaking of sending kids off, I have been obsessed this summer watching a bird family. My youngest son built a birdhouse with his grandpa in early spring, and we hung it right outside of our family room window so that we could watch if it became occupied. And it quickly did! A pretty little white and tan female and a gorgeous male with a black and shiny blue coat claimed it. I would sit in my chair and drink coffee every single morning, watching the activity. And I would catch myself glancing over at them all day long as I went about my day. I didn’t want to miss anything. First, they built their cozy home together. I was amazed at how fast they go swooping into that little hole from high in the sky with a beak filled with straw. Then there was the constant

mating, the eventual laying of eggs and the chirping of newly hatched baby birds. The first day I heard those faint sounds choked me up with such pride. I kept thinking, “we did it!” Then came a morning where I could tell something wasn’t right. Something was laying in the opening to the birdhouse. My binoculars confirmed my fear that it was a dead baby. I was so heartbroken. I watched the mama bird lay next to her baby for over an hour. She had her head down on it with her eyes closed. Dad sat right outside standing guard. I googled if birds grieve and the answer was yes. With tears streaming down my face, I silently watched this mom and dad grieving their baby. Even the remaining babies kept quiet the whole time, letting their parents have their moment. I am forever grateful to those birds for this rare experience we were able to witness this summer. While watching the birds each morning, I would think about how fast their birth cycle goes by. In a matter of two weeks from hatching, the baby birds are gone and the parents move on. Lucky for humans, we get 17 or 18 years before our babies spread their wings. And it never feels like long enough. This month, as we get ready to send our children back to school, let’s spend our last summer days looking for the rare moments with them that are easy to take for granted. That shared laugh over a joke, making a snack together, a cuddle before bed. Find your moments and hold them tight.

Continues Community Programs with Robust Fundraising Plans All Fall By Megan Mayes

“FRIENDS of Broomfield is a community-based non-profit agency that provides support to adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities through four distinct programs. Through the years, FRIENDS has evolved to become a premier service-providing agency, serving over 250 individuals in Broomfield and the surrounding communities.” -Gina Coufal, Founder and CEO.

FRIENDS of Broomfield has been supporting adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities in the Broomfield area since 1998. Gina describes the creation of FRIENDS by saying, “FRIENDS was established by a handful of parents looking for social and community activities for their children with special needs. As these children grew, the organization formalized, became a non-profit, and focused on advocacy during the transition to the new county of Broomfield.” Today, FRIENDS provides services through day programs, supported employment, residential support, and social and travel activities. These programs and activities set individuals up for success in fulfilling their goals and dreams in a way that allows them to participate in, contribute to, and enhance the community. Gina was quick to mention, “We are bursting at the seams and we can barely keep up with the demand for our services, which is a great problem to have.” FRIENDS relies on donations and fundraising to provide the highest quality of person-centered service to as many people as they can manage. She remarked on how they could not have made it through 2020 without contributions from many generous community donors. FRIENDS does a lot of fundraising throughout the year, and is currently striving for ambitious fundraising goals to gain back revenues lost during the pandemic last year. The new BeFRIEND Young Professionals group meets once a month for happy hour to plan outreach and fundraising events, like the Crawfish Boil hosted in July. If you are interested in joining the group or attending their next event (August 14th Beer Pong Tournament) visit the FRIENDS website under the Take Action > Attend Events tab for more information. Fashion Show, is a great way to contribute to fundraising efforts and interact with program participants. One of the best FRIENDS fundraising events of the year is coming up in October. Be sure to get your tickets for the Variety Show on Sunday, October 24 at Alamo Drafthouse. The show, ‘FRIENDS Rocks!,’ will be filled with music through the decades performed by talented FRIENDS program participants. You do not want to miss this super fun annual fundraising event! This year, you are also invited to participate in FRIENDSgiving by holding your own fundraising campaign from November 1 to December 1. Invite your friends, family members, coworkers, etc. to join you in making your Thanksgiving a life changing one by making a charitable gift to FRIENDS that will have a lasting impact on our Friends with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Contact FRIENDS for help setting up your campaign, or visit their website at friendsofbroomfield.org and see all the ways to give back under the Take Action Tab. FRIENDS welcomes anyone wanting to contribute to the organization by volunteering time and expertise serving on their Board, or applying as a Direct Support Professional to work with the Friends in their Day, Residential, Employment and Social & Travel Programs. “We will continue to improve on our approach to make sure that our participants are at the forefront of everything we do, that they always have choice and control over their lives. By letting them navigate this life and guide the organization, they can achieve all that they want and be fully integrated and contributing members of the community. That’s really at the heart of everything that we do, and we are very fortunate to live in a community that has always embraced our mission and supported us. We are very grateful,” said Gina.

Precious Perks Offers Coffee for the Community, Workforce Development for Young Adults

A Precious Child Extends Outreach through New Resource By Allison Eichner

Broomfield’s newest coffee shop will leave visitors feeling uplifted as it doubles as a space for community and A Precious Child’s new workforce development program, Precious Perks. Precious Perks offers 16- to 24-yearolds who are out of work the opportunity to gain practical skills to enter the workforce. Through mentorship, a varied curriculum, and social and emotional support, A Precious Child aims to help aspiring young professionals obtain and retain employment.

Danica de Jong, Marketing Director at A Precious Child, said Precious Perks is the perfect next step to achieve the cradle-tocareer goal of all their support programs. “The biggest deal with employers is that candidates are unqualified to work.” de Jong explained, “We saw that there was this gap in the workforce and being able to bridge the gap helps bring this cradle-to-career initiative to fruition. It’s kind of like the perfect segue.” By giving young professionals hands-on experience and training, they hope to assuage frustration experienced by both employers and future employees. Employers

feel they are unable to find qualified and experienced workers, while at the same time 75% of youth who are not employed nor in school feel they lack the experience or confidence to pursue these jobs. Precious Perks is designed to target both of these fears in their candidates. With an emphasis in social emotional well-being, instructors go beyond the practical skills necessary for a job and highlight the importance of customer service and individual confidence. In the coffee and gift shop, candidates will work hard at building a customer service skill set. “Dealing with people socially is a vital skill set,” said de Jong, “Being able to problem solve and fix problems through resolution rather than emotion.” After completing the Precious Perks curriculum and gaining experience in the coffee shop, each candidate will begin their mentorship with a local working professional. Each mentor commits to a year supporting and guiding their mentee. The relationship created between the two is crucial because it allows the young professional to “Always feel supported by someone who is professional and can offer advice. We want them to feel that they are not alone and can turn to someone that can support them.” Poverty and difficulties with employment are often multigenerational and cyclical. In addition to giving young people the confidence and skills to create a long-standing career, Precious Perks also works to find underlying struggles, like housing and child care, and connect them with services that can help. By partnering with like-minded local businesses, the program strives to challenge local racial inequity, change the pay gap, and diversify the workforce in the Denver Metro region. On July 15, 2021, the coffee and gift shop opened up to the public. Designed to be a space for community and conversation, de Jong described the shop as “a really comfortable place to be.” Precious Perks Coffee and Gift shop is stocked with local coffee and assorted menu items from Broomfield restaurants. Additionally, the gift shop features a line of upcycled clothing. All the revenue from the store goes back to supporting the workforce development program. The shop is located at 7051 W 118th Ave. in Broomfield, inside the A Precious Child building. Young adults can apply to the program on the Precious Perks webpage. Working professionals interested in mentoring for the program can also apply online. Both applications can be found at www.APreciousChild.org/whatwe-do/precious-perks.

Broomfield’s Schools Evolve to Meet Needs of Growing Population

The foundation for a strong and thriving community lies in the education of future generations, and this was something Broomfield residents knew even in the mid 1880s when they built the community’s first wooden oneroom schoolhouse. The school was located at 10th Avenue and Main Street, and was also used for church services until a separate church was built in 1906.

B

y 1918, there were three schools educating children in the area. The three schools were each part of a different county, but all served the people living in the area that would eventually become Broomfield. The one-room schoolhouse became the Broomfield school, and served residents of Boulder County. The Westlake School, a historic building today still located on Lowell Boulevard next to the Paul Derda Recreation Center, was officially part of Adams County. The Lorraine School was located in Jefferson County. Locals wanted to consolidate these three schools into one district, so in 1918 they voted to create the Broomfield School District. This would have prevented Broomfield teens from traveling to other cities to attend high school.

24

Our Broomfield™ Magazine | August 2021

Despite the movement being supported by a member of each school district’s board, a local judge opposed the decision because the new school district would still overlap three distinct counties and thus could not be fully “consolidated.” In 1921 the one-room Broomfield School was replaced with a new two-room schoolhouse to accommodate the growing population. Two teachers taught about thirty students in that building, without running water. Once students finished their education there, they had to travel to Arvada or Lafayette to attend high school. Turnpike Land Company started developing the master-planned community of Broomfield in the early 1950s. During this first filing, the old Broomfield schoolhouse was torn down and replaced with two modern cottage schools. Classes were held in these cottages from 1955 to 1961, when the city was finally incorporated and the population quickly grew to 6,000.

THANK YOU

to History of Broomfield, Broomfield’s Historic Depot Hill Museum, and Genealogy Trails for all of the information about the growth of Broomfield’s schools.

Broomfield County in 2001, the local schools resided in six different school districts belonging to the surrounding counties. Today, Broomfield’s 16 public schools belong to the Boulder Valley School District, the Adams 12 Five Star School District, the Weld County School District, the Jefferson County School District, the Brighton School District, and the St. Vrain Valley School District.

By 1962, Broomfield was home to Emerald School and Kohl School. A high school finally opened for 860 sophomore, junior, and senior students in 1963. Classes started in the fall of 1964 in the building we now know as Broomfield High School, though it has seen several remodels since then. Birch Elementary, Centennial Elementary, and Westlake Middle School all opened in the 1970s. The 1980s saw the opening of Broomfield Heights Middle School and Mountain View Elementary. At this point, Broomfield and its schools spanned four different counties. The year 2000 saw the newest school additions to the Broomfield community with the openings of Aspen Creek K-8 School and Legacy High School. Build It And They Shall Eat By Lisa Payne

Over the Fourth of July weekend, I had my family in town from Minnesota. We were having coffee and talking, and I said I needed to go write my recipe article for Our Broomfield™ Magazine. My dad quickly got up and came back with a stack of cookbooks I had written in junior high. He was cleaning out his garage before coming to visit and found them all. He said, “Here you go, I hope there is some inspiration in there.” I was so happy to have them! We immediately started looking through them and laughing hysterically. The titles were so funny and you could make any meal inside of a jello base including one with peas. Why was that ever a good idea? One recipe was called “salad” and explained how to rinse and chop lettuce. That was the whole recipe list. Lettuce. Talk about easy, ha! Right now I am into “build your own meals” or adding your own toppings. That way everyone is happy. I have found that if I make all of my kids the same breakfast before school, there is always complaining. And two of my four kids don’t like to eat breakfast at all so it’s a chore to get anything in them. Smoothies or protein shakes sometimes work, but I never know from day to day. As we head back to school, here are a few EASY breakfast ideas to nourish your kids for their long day of learning, and hopefully get their creative juices flowing by having them top it themselves. Enjoy!

A Young City Needs Schools and Fast!

Broomfield’s Cottage Schools 1956-1958 By Elizabeth Beaudoin, Broomfield Depot Museum Curator

In October 1955, The Boulder Daily Camera stated that Broomfield had 36 pupils housed in a two-room schoolhouse, and predicted that there would soon be an increase of 500% (between 150-200 students) in the next six months as hundreds of young families moved to Broomfield Heights. New houses were being built at rapid pace. The quick solution would be the quaintly named “Cottage Schools,” taking a few of the newly built ranch-style homes and turning them into small schools. Broomfield ended up with four of these Cottage Schools, before the city’s first formal elementary school (Emerald Elementary) could be built.

28

Our Broomfield™ Magazine | August 2021

B

efore 1921, Broomfield school children attended school in one of two one-room wooden schoolhouses: the Lorraine School at the southern end of town, and the “Old Broomfield School” further north. Both of these buildings have now been demolished; the Lorraine School is thought to have been demolished sometime in the mid20th century, and the Old Broomfield Schoolhouse was unfortunately demolished in only 2012 to make way for 120th Avenue Bridge over Route 36. In 1921, a two-room brick school was built to serve Broomfield’s students through grade 8 (if students wanted to continue to high school, they would have to travel to Louisville or Lafayette). By 1955, this brick structure no longer met the expectations of a modern school. The Broomfield Builder (a newsletter for new Broomfield Heights residents), reported in February 1956 that the building “was in a bad state of repair, and had to be closed on cold days.” By 1956, the old brick school would be closed for good, and demolished in 1958. Confidence was high in Broomfield’s growth and its need for classrooms. That same 1956 Broomfield Builder stated that by 1958 (less than two years later!) there would be 11 cottage schools with the predetermined names of Aspen, Birch, Cedar, Cherry, Hickory, Holly, Linden, Maple, Poplar, Spruce, and Willow. To be built and named in that order, and “all built at no cost to the Broomfield School District.” The first cottage school to open was the Aspen School in December 1955 with 32 students (an additional 17 students remained at the Old Brick School through the school year), at 450 West 1st Ave. The school had

Do you, or someone you may know, have memories of attending one of Broomfield’s early schools? The Depot Museum is actively collecting stories, objects, and photos from Broomfield’s past, particularly from the years of intense growth and transformation in the 1950s and 1960s. Oral histories are simple Zoom interviews with Museum Coordinator David Allison (and aren’t we all pros at socializing via Zoom after this year?), and help preserve our precious local memories.

three teachers: Ruby Rosenberg (grades 1-2), Helen Lundberg (grades 3-5), and Helen Musselman (grades 6-8). Birch, Cedar, and Cherry Schools were all built within the year, all lined up next to each other on 1st Ave. The other seven planned schools never came to fruition, as Emerald Elementary opened in 1958. The cost of the new school was $455,000, with the land being donated by the Turnpike Land Company. The school was designed to hold 480 elementary students, plus an additional 120 kindergartners. Yet only a year later, Kohl Elementary School would also be built; the school enrollment was already at 1,169 for the 1959 school year. Broomfield’s school population grew from 32 to 1,169 pupils in less than four years. In 2021, the Broomfield Depot Museum recorded an oral history interview with Debbie Baker. In 1957, young Debbie moved with her family to one of the new houses being built in Broomfield Heights. She entered school at the Cherry Cottage School, and remembers that each of the four cottage school houses held a different grade. She vividly remembered when they moved to the new Emerald Elementary School, having to walk their belongings from the old school to the new one, and it was blisteringly cold.

CASA Volunteers, Fundraisers Help Organization Support

HUNDREDS OF LOCAL CHILDREN By Megan Mayes

The Court Appointed Special Advocates of Adams and Broomfield Counties (CASA) is a community-based 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that trains volunteers to represent child victims of abuse and neglect. Volunteers advocate in the courtroom so judges can make wellinformed and up-to-date decisions regarding the education, safety, health, visitation, and permanent homes of children who might otherwise feel invisible. Judges hold CASA volunteers’ opinions in high regard, and their dedication is invaluable to the children they represent. Abbie Foley, the Associate Development Director, values working with CASA volunteers to “really dig in and be a part of the work that advocates are doing in the community.” CASA has nearly 1,000 districts across the nation, and Adams and Broomfield Counties make up the 17th district of the 18 located in Colorado. Each year, there are approximately 1,600 children with an open abuse and neglect case in our judicial district. Over the past year, CASA was able to advocate for more than 620 children, which was a milestone. They strive to cover 100% of cases but the gap in service requires more volunteers and funds in order to be bridged. Abbie described CASA volunteers as “ordinary people doing extraordinary work.” Volunteers come from all walks of life, just like the children for which they advocate. What all volunteers have in common is their commitment to changing children’s lives by learning and sharing life experiences that differ from their own. This genuine connection and stable

30

Our Broomfield™ Magazine | August 2021

relationship built on listening and understanding helps children feel seen and heard during the legal process. “Our volunteers represent the community, so we want everyday people in the courtroom to bring their unique perspective. Anyone over the age of 21 who passes the background check can be a volunteer.” Abbie believes that almost everyone has the time to become a committed CASA volunteer because the nature of the position allows the time to be flexible with pre-existing schedules. It averages out to between 10 and 15 hours per month including court hearings and professional meetings, which are scheduled far in advance. Most CASA volunteers work full-time jobs along with their advocate position, so don’t hesitate to reach out and learn more if you are interested in volunteering! CASA fundraises 100% of its budget, so each contribution is highly valued and appreciated. The cost to recruit, train, and supervise one CASA volunteer to support one child for one year is $1200. By attending a fundraising event, like the annual Indulge for CASA Gala coming up on September 14, you can help CASA pursue the goal of having every child in need matched with a volunteer advocate. The wine and cheese tasting at Balisteri Vineyards includes both live and silent auctions and is themed as A Night on Broadway. This event will be fun, exciting, and delicious! For more information about CASA fundraisers, volunteering, or donating, please visit the web pages listed below. Broomfield Performance Arts Began with

Jane Spain By Bette Erickson

Many of us knew longtime Broomfield resident and dancer, Jane Morrow Spain; a tireless advocate for performance arts. Our community lost a jewel this past May with her passing. She was 91. “She did everything in such a graceful way,” said Heidi Thomas, owner of Dance Arts Studio.

A

bout the same time our city was incorporating in 1961, Ms. Spain founded the Morrow School of Dance in Broomfield. Located on Quay Street near 120th Avenue, the studio was often referred to as “…the little red dance schoolhouse on the hill…” She’s credited with never turning away a child who wanted to dance, often at her own personal expense. “Jane felt it wasn’t a complete community without the arts,” explained Thomas. “I met her when I was 7 years old and I remember growing up and dancing through junior high and high school and she would say, ‘Share your art.’” Sadly, Broomfield lost another arts icon this past fall. The Broomfield Council on the Arts and Humanities (BCAH) president and treasurer, Sherill Bunetta, died October 24. Mrs. Bunetta was with BCAH for 25 years, and like Ms. Spain, left behind an honorable legacy of supporting the arts. (To learn more about Mrs. Bunetta and BCAH, see the February 2021 edition of Our Broomfield.) During Ms. Spain’s lovely memorial service, attendees learned that as a young adult, she had two dance studios in Iowa when she came Jane Morrow Spain is shown posing in this late to Colorado Springs for a summer 1940s photo for “You’ll Never Walk Alone” from the workshop. a job at Elitch Gardens, so she sold her studios and decided to move to Colorado. However, that opportunity fell through. She subsequently created Broomfield’s first dance studio. In 1974 she founded the Children’s Dance Theater, touring local schools with free performances for nearly forty years. One of her former students, longtime Broomfield resident Thomas, began teaching at the Morrow School of Dance in 1980, ultimately purchasing the dance school in 1983.

In my opinion, Jane Spain knew Broomfield’s potential better than anyone else in the community” “It was a gift having her mentor me. She was such a big part of my life and who I am now,” added Thomas. Today the school, called Dance Arts Studio, operates as a non-profit serving the community with a variety of dance performances. Ms. Spain served on the DAS Board of Directors for a number of years. “In my opinion, Jane Spain knew Broomfield’s potential better than anyone else in the community,” said Dr. Christina Lynn-Craig, Artistic Director of ASTER Women’s Chamber Choir and owner of Dr. Tina’s Voice Studio. “This went far beyond establishing her dance studio. She saw a small town grow and change, and her vision for the need for artistic expression and for the opportunity to learn about and appreciate diverse arts was expansive. Her presence on the Board of Directors of the Broomfield Council on the Arts and Humanities was important in many ways. She welcomed new members with open arms and freely shared the many lessons which she had learned as the creator and director of arts programs.”

In 2002 Ms. Spain was recognized with the Heart of Broomfield Award for the Arts and in 2018 organization members of the Broomfield Council on the Arts & Humanities nominated Ms. Spain, whom they called “an advocate of the arts for the past 50 years” for a lifetime achievement award. She was honored as a Living Legend of Dance in Colorado by the University of Denver’s Carson Brierly Giffin Dance Library. “Jane attended as many community arts events as she could, all types of choral and orchestral concerts, theatre productions, Marvelous Musicales, the annual Piano Festival and art exhibits,” Dr. Lynn-Craig added. “She would make a point of calling me after a concert to congratulate me on a performance, emphasizing that she was well aware of how much work a director puts into a performance. She would offer specific and encouraging comments about how the choir was improving and what new concepts were working well. She helped us ‘recharge our batteries’ and kept us excited about our work.” Thomas agreed. “She shaped me. It was always about taking the high road and doing the right thing - doing the best you could do.” Bette Erickson writes about people, places and events. Contact her at bette_erickson@hotmail.com.

Depot Museum Grew from the Dedication of Many to Preserve the Memories of Broomfield By Kristen Beckman

“Have you ever heard the expression “You start out carrying a calf and end up carrying a cow?” asked Karen McGuire, the Broomfield Depot Museum’s first director, when asked about the museum’s beginnings.

T

he metaphor aptly describes the effort that went into moving the aging railroad depot building built in 1909 a mile down the road and turning it into a museum that now holds memories and artifacts representing more than 100 years of Broomfield history. “We started out small,” recalled McGuire. “We had no idea what it was going to turn into.” The museum’s journey from a depot serving the Colorado & Southern Railroad, to a historical landmark was only possible through the perseverance of McGuire, Peggy Atkinson, and a host of dedicated volunteers, not to mention the city, which supported the effort. In 1975, C&S Railroad sold the building to the Broomfield Jaycees for $1 on the condition the city would move the building, and so the building was loaded onto a flatbed truck and driven to its current location at Zang Spur Park.

McGuire and her husband were involved in the building’s move and resurrection as a museum thanks to her husband’s interest in railroads as a former railroad worker himself who came from a family of railroaders in Nebraska. The couple lived just a few blocks from the depot while it was still in operation, and McGuire’s husband and station attendant Herb Rutledge had become friends. After the building was moved, McGuire and her husband joined the newly established Broomfield Historical Society, which had the vision to turn the relocated building into a museum that chronicled not only the history of the depot and railroad, but also of Broomfield and its earliest residents. “There was no money for anybody to be paid to work there, so we were all volunteers,” said McGuire. “We had bake sales and book sales and we sold fruit cakes over the years. We had amazing volunteers that would come in their old jeans and strip paint off of things. It was a lot of work for a lot of people - dedicated people that hung in there for a lot of years.” McGuire interviewed many of Broomfield’s founding residents to preserve their memories. She recalls interviewing Joe Huddart, owner of the Broomfield Lumber Company from 1924 to 1985, We had bake sales and book sales and we sold fruit cakes over the years. We had amazing volunteers that would come in their old jeans and strip paint off of things. It was a lot of work for a lot of people - dedicated people that hung in there for a lot of years.”

We started out small,” recalled McGuire. “We had no idea what it was going to turn into.”

“On the day they brought it over, I was standing on the north side of the museum, and they came around the curb there and almost tipped it over,” said Atkinson. “Oh my word, we all caught our breath.” One of Atkinson’s proudest achievements was getting the grave of Shep, Broomfield’s tollbooth dog, moved to the museum. Shep was a stray who spent his days in the tollbooth on Highway 36, where travelers would bring him food and treats. When Shep died in 1964, he was buried near the tollbooth. In 2009, Atkinson successfully convinced the city to move his grave to the museum’s property so it wouldn’t be lost to construction. “I’m so glad that we did what we all did,” said Atkinson, who said she thinks of the museum as Broomfield’s ‘Forever Museum.’ “I feel that we saved those things for all the future and everybody that comes to Broomfield.”

and driving through the town with Lib Brunner, who would point out where things used to be before Broomfield blossomed into a bustling suburb of Denver. “It was so valuable and so critical because these people were elderly and we were losing them so we were losing the history,” said McGuire. In 1983, the museum opened, with public hours on Sunday and school children visiting for tours during the week. “We had a lot of school children through in the winter and that just worked out perfectly,” said Atkinson, who took the reins from McGuire to become the museum’s Today the Broomfield Depot second director. “The kids from Kohl could walk over because there wasn’t that Museum at 2201 W. 10th Ave. is open every Saturday from 11:00 much traffic and the classes weren’t that big.” a.m. to 4:00 p.m. During one such tour, Atkinson said a man knocked on the door of the museum to donate a beautiful radio, which they immediately placed in the living room of the building. She recalled that the children were fascinated with the radio and eager to listen to it. For information visit: Atkinson was also involved with getting the Honey House www.broomfield.org/120/Broomfield-Depot-Museum moved to its current spot near the museum.

Broomfield Chamber Evolved as Community Grew Up By Kristen Beckman

On October 11, 1960, 70 businesses and professionals gathered at Mary’s restaurant on Midway to discuss the idea of forming a chamber of commerce for the Broomfield area. The board of directors of the Business Professional Men’s Association had invited local business leaders to the meeting via mail and followed up each invitation with a phone call.

Nearby, Comforting Hikes to

Soothe Your Soul By Bette Erickson

It’s not a long drive to Westminster’s Mushroom Pond. The drive was plenty of time, however, for my vacationing friend to discourse on the main themes of shopping in New York City: the variety, trends and bargains. “But I’m here to get back to nature,” she sighed. I’ve been to NYC numerous times – it’s nothing compared with being in nature (my preferred destination). Studies show nature is a powerful therapy for all ages in reducing depression, obesity, and attention deficit disorder. Spending time outdoors, particularly in parks and forests, has been shown to increase the ability to concentrate in both children and adults. So, with that, I’ll offer a couple of nearby hikes that I find relaxing and invigorating. Wait. Is that an oxymoron?

A quick trip about Westminster’s refurbished Mushroom Pond is just about .8-miles, but if you’re lucky you may spot resident turtles and bullfrogs nestled in the cattails along the shoreline, barely making themselves visible. Bette Erickson/For Our Broomfield

Mushroom Pond Sturdy, old growth cottonwood trees, pleasing to the eye hug the shore of Westminster’s refurbished Mushroom Pond. At just .8-mile, it’s a short loop circling the lake, but the rewards are worth a second pass. I typically walk around twice savoring the birdsong, allowing my dog to sniff and pause frequently. Once I spotted a turtle with a shell the size of a dinner plate, and on a separate trip, a bull frog croaking in the cattails along the shoreline. When you arrive, take a look at the trailhead kiosk to familiarize yourself with the area and choose either clockwise or counter-clockwise. Either direction will suffice, as you will more than likely finish the outing feeling better than when you arrived. To get there:

The trailhead is about 1.4-miles south from 120th Avenue on Federal Blvd., take a left into the large parking lot just past the Savory Mushrooms tower.

Interlocken’s East Park to Central Park A friend and I have a Thanksgiving morning tradition: We meet at Interlocken’s East Park and saunter around the quiet area. If you choose to do both loops (pictured), the walk will sum to about 3.5-miles. However, other options include the loop around East Park, at just one mile or the loop out and back to Interlocken’s Central Park is a 2.5-mile outing. If you’ve not done a walk around these carefully planned open spaces at Broomfield’s prestigious Interlocken Business Park, it’s worth a visit. I find this area off the beaten path and satisfying in the fall or winter (on snowshoes, given adequate snowpack). The routes are wheelchair-friendly, too.
