EDITOR Our Spaces When I was a young teen growing up in Broomfield, a new family moved in down the street from my family. The Bosios had a little girl about three years old and I was at a prime age to babysit. I marched across the street and introduced myself, and offered my services as a babysitter. Beth and John Bosio gave me a chance and I began spending many weekend evenings with their little girl. A few years after, the Bosios launched their business, Restoration Specialists, Inc. (RSI) from the front office of their home. My position evolved and I became Beth’s all around helper, assisting with the children (expanded by then to three), the house, and sometimes the business. I learned a lot in those early years. How to keep up with the crews via pager, how to run payroll and job costing, and I typed - on a typewriter - many, many letters and proposals for John. I also observed what entrepreneurial spirit and true hard work looked like, as I had a front row seat to a family building what would become a very successful business, and one that is key to this community today. A few years later now (more than I care to admit), I find myself embarking on a similar journey, starting this magazine business with my husband from our living room. Nearly a year in, I count my family as blessed each day for the successes we have enjoyed so far. Numerous times in this first year I have reflected on the lessons I learned as a teen, working for the Bosios, and gaining an invaluable understanding about what it takes to build a solid foundation for something that will last. And of course, as I work from our home, spending more time than I ever have inside its walls, my mind sometimes wanders to thinking about how we might update and improve the space to make it more functional to current needs. For that, I expect soon to be calling on a few of the providers highlighted in this issue - dedicated to Home Services. Check out the guide we created on pages 28-33 as you contemplate your home improvement projects for this spring and summer. But back to the Bosios; I was thrilled when my phone rang about a month ago and it was Will Bosio, asking if I would be interested in an article on the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and its 2021 fundraiser that includes Will and a few other prominent Broomfield residents. Of course I said yes. I am honored to share the details of this worthwhile organization and cause in this issue and share how LLS has touched local lives. And it was so good to catch up with Will after all these years. You can read more on pages 42-43. Thanks for reading,

Spring Cleanup Returns this Spring Broomfield’s spring cleanup days begin in April and extend into May. Annually, Broomfield City and County offers a large-item trash collection service for free for all Broomfield residents. On four Saturdays in April and May, collectors will come haul away unwanted items in every neighborhood. There is no scheduling necessary and predetermined boundaries dictate which weeks trash will be collected from each neighborhood. All residents are required to do is have their items ready for pickup at the curb by 7:00 a.m. the morning of their designated collection day. This is a large item specific collection service, so hazardous materials, electronics, and normal household trash will not be picked up on this day. Western Disposal will also have separate trucks for trash and recycling if residents choose to separate their items. For items in good condition to donate, ARC Thrift Store will also be picking up donations. Leave items for donation on the porch or anywhere with clear signage that the items are for ARC. Spring Cleanup Days are Saturdays April 17, April 24, May 1, and May 8. To determine your zone and corresponding pickup day, visit the Broomfield City and County website to view the interactive map and read a full list of acceptable and unacceptable items. BUSY FAMILIES Decluttering Your Mind By Lisa Payne

Since this issue is all about home improvement, I thought it would be a good time to talk about spring cleaning our minds. There has been so much heaviness and heartache this past year, for so many people. Even in a normal year it is easy to let things like worry, guilt, and stress weigh us down. It takes up so much of our energy that we can’t enjoy all the good that life has to offer. Let’s talk about a way to clear out the negative thoughts in your life and let your light really shine through. We all have our thing that we are worrying about right now. Maybe it’s about work, our aging parents, or a health issue. We all have worry. A good thing to remember is that we have the power to allow the negative emotions to come in, or to keep them out. We control what we think about. If someone has hurt your feelings and you hold a grudge, you are letting them hurt you over and over. This is where the power of forgiveness comes in. I tell this to my kids over and over. When someone hurts you, it usually has nothing to do with you. We don’t know what they are dealing with personally. When someone is hurting, they may try to make others hurt with them without even knowing it. We have to keep our heart open and not take in the negative energy. We must stay kind and forgiving and focus our energy on those who make us feel good. It is so hard to do when in the moment. It’s easy to obsess about our worries. This is when you need to take some time and go for a quick walk, punch a pillow, journal your thoughts, or simply close your eyes and listen to a guided meditation. Anything to get rid of the anxiety around your thoughts. When I go to bed at night I forgive anyone who may have upset me and pray that they are happy. If I’m stressed about a presentation or getting stuff done, I imagine it all going perfectly. It feels so much better to do that than to rehash the negative feelings. We started watching Ted Lasso on Apple TV. He is the epitome of a positive attitude. When it feels like the world is against him and wanting him to fail, he doesn’t see it. He keeps smiling and turning the haters into his biggest fans. If we could all keep out the negative like he does, the world would be a much brighter place. Take some time to spring clean your mind, your attitude, your emotions. Do things for yourself that make you happy. Buy fresh flowers, walk with a friend, have a basket

The most curious phenomenon of aging is that most people value youth because it means potential. But only time and experience bring wisdom. Aging isn’t so bad, especially in our community of Broomfield. Just ask Sally Huffman. She and her husband, Wayne, have been here since 1972. The couple have been married 49 years. “I’m pretty sure it’s 49 years,” she says. “Maybe we have been married 50 years.” Mrs. Huffman is well-known in many circles, particularly the Broomfield Community Center’s (BCC) senior facilities. Broomfield Senior Services at BCC helps older adults navigate resources to support healthy aging and independence, including the areas of prevention, mental health, isolation, and other relevant concerns. Residents are provided resources and advocacy in making contact with appropriate agencies to meet individual needs. Follow up and evaluation are provided to ensure the individual is receiving the appropriate services. Residents can access these resources and many more by calling Broomfield Senior Services at 303-464-5526. Mrs. Huffman started her involvement at the community center first by volunteering at its front desk several decades ago. Mrs. Huffman will turn 80 years old this year. “I never thought I would see 80, but here I am – it’s pretty special,” she explained. One of the activities that keeps her young at heart is participating in yoga twice a week at BCC. The Senior Services department of the Broomfield Community Center offers all-facility pass holders the opportunity to enjoy a variety of benefits, in addition to access to recreation facilities when open, including the Paul Derda Recreation Center, Broomfield Community Center, and The Bay Aquatic Park. There is a daily resident rate fee of $4 for 60+ year-olds or $21/month. If you’re caring for an aging adult that doesn’t drive or if you’ve decided to stop driving yourself, many Broomfield seniors and non-seniors make use of RTD’s Flexride®; a handicap accessible, curb-to-curb service. Mrs. Huffman, a 2015 Broomfield Community Foundation Heart of Broomfield Senior Award recipient, said she used to volunteer at Broomfield’s flagship florist, Bouquet Boutique for a number of years, in addition to the BCC and the Women’s Gathering group at her church. She has also served on the Board of Directors for Senior Resources of Broomfield (SRB) for more than a decade. Senior Services at the Broomfield Community Center offers dozens of activities – some, but not all, are just on hold or have gone virtual until these COVID-19 restrictions ease. “Always be nice to seniors, because you’re going to be one someday,” Mrs. Huffman said her mother advised her years ago and that’s why, even to this day, she stays so active in the community promoting senior issues. Spring is a natural time to begin thinking about home improvement projects, from adding or upgrading the systems and structures of your house to finishing a basement or re-doing a kitchen or bath. While these projects can be fun and exciting to plan, they are often expensive and can be time consuming, so it’s important to choose the right contractor for your project to ensure it is done right and turns out the way you want it.

hoosing a contractor can be overwhelming, and when you aren’t an expert, it can be hard to know how to choose the right professional for the job. As such, it’s easy for homeowners to make mistakes along the way and for misunderstandings to lead to disappointments. Karla Ferguson, Vice President of J&K Roofing, which provides roof inspection, roof installation and repairs, said three primary mistakes homeowners make when choosing a contractor for a project are shopping only on price, not checking local references and qualifications, and not getting expert insight to understand the scope of the project. For roofing projects, a professional roofer should provide a free inspection and an honest assessment of the required work. “You don’t always need a new roof,” Ferguson said. Ferguson advises homeowners to ask neighbors to recommend contractors they have worked with, read company reviews, and look companies up on the Better Business Bureau site when evaluating

In addition to getting at least three bids from reputable contractors for a project, he also says homeowners should ask for, and more importantly, check references. He said homeowners and contractors should also draw up a good contract that spells out not only the scope of work but also the timing involved. And finally, Pate says homeowners should ensure contractors pull the necessary permits and view them before allowing the contractor to begin work on the project. The Federal Trade Commission maintains a webpage with a variety of advice for homeowners when choosing a contractor, including asking how long a contractor has been in business, asking the contractor whether the project will require permits, finding out what type of insurance they carry, and whether they will be using subcontractors on the job. In addition, the FTC advises homeowners not to pay cash for projects. Use check or credit card for smaller projects or arrange financing if necessary for larger projects. Try to limit your downpayment and negotiate payments contingent upon completion

With March comes longer days, warmer temperatures and daffodils peeping through the snow, all of which herald the beginning of Spring. Although conventional wisdom warns Coloradans to avoid starting their gardens until after Mother’s Day, you may already be dreaming about colorful annuals and perennials to beautify your yard, or perhaps a vegetable garden that you can tend to with your kids.

uch to the chagrin of many novice gardeners, Colorado does not provide a naturally easy environment for gardening, and many a brown thumb have given up on their gardening dreams after a few failed attempts. But what many people don’t know is that there is a resource in our figurative backyard to help us make the most of our literal backyards. The Broomfield County Extension office, which is administered by Colorado State University, exists to provide residents with expertise and information about yard and gardening topics. The Master Gardener program, made up of about 30 volunteers, is a primary focus of Broomfield’s Extension office. These expert gardeners maintain a demonstration garden in partnership with the Denver Botanic Gardens and CSU’s Plant Select program, which tests plants to find out which will do the best in Colorado. Master Gardener volunteers also provide free advice to citizens via phone or email and will make site visits for a fee. “Colorado is one of the most diverse states geographically,” said Nancy Klasky, Master Gardener Coordinator with the Broomfield Extension office. “We have plant hardiness zones ranging from 3a to 7a. This creates unique gardening challenges depending on where you live.” With such a diverse spectrum of influences on horticulture and agriculture, county CSU extension offices are crucial in Colorado to provide highly local information, she said.

The key is to understand the plants you are considering growing so you know how much sun, water, and care they need. Here are a few projects that you can try this spring and summer:

1. Plant vegetables in raised beds. “Our climate is dry and our soil is mostly made of clay,” said Klasky. While it is possible to work with clay soil to improve its composition and make it more hospitable for gardening, it sometimes can take years to achieve that. One way many Colorado gardners deal with soil issues is by planting vegetable gardens in raised beds, which allows them to start out with good gardening soil. Klasky said local garden nurseries can help you choose a good soil, and if you need a large amount, check with landscaping companies, which can deliver it to your home. 2. Grow a salad on your patio. Growing vegetables in containers helps eliminate irrigation and mulching issues that can complicate vegetable gardens grown directly in the ground. “Containers let you gauge how your plant is doing and easily adjust sun exposure and watering,” said Klasky. She noted tomatoes and chili peppers grow well in patio gardens. 3. Donate your bounty. Last year, the Extension program launched a Victory Garden program, which harnessed the enthusiasm for gardening many people developed while quarantined at home, and turned it into something beneficial for the community. Gardeners who grew vegetables were encouraged to donate their bounty to local food pantries that were able to accept such donations. The Victory Garden program will likely be repeated this year, Klasky said. 4. Choose plants that will thrive in Colorado. Choosing native plants, or plants that thrive in poor soil and are drought hardy, can increase your chances for success. Klasky said she is an advocate for xeriscaping, which she emphasized is not ‘rock scaping’ but replacing traditional landscaping with native plants that aren’t so thirsty. “As much as 60 percent of the water we use in residential areas goes toward our lawns,” Klasky said. 5. Plan a year-round garden. Some plants take a bit of planning. For example, to decorate your yard with cheerful tulips, crocuses, and daffodils in the spring, you have to plant bulbs in the fall before the ground freezes. If you want a bounty of vegetables in summer, you may want to start seeds indoors in March or April. And if you want plants and veggies to produce well into the fall, plant some cold hardy varieties like lettuce, spinach, and turnips during the heat of summer so they hit their maturity when temperatures start to drop.

How do you feel when you walk into your home at the end of a long stressful day? Does it feel like a little piece of heaven that you can’t wait to sink into or does it feel more like a circus with so much going on that you can’t think straight? There are many books and shows about how to declutter your home. I’ve watched the shows and read the books. I am here to share what I’ve learned and what has worked for me. Before we start, the most important thing to consider is WHY do you want to declutter. To clear your mind? To have less debt and save money? To have less to clean and be more organized? I’ve spent entire days just moving things around and never really accomplishing anything. And then one day my very tidy husband told me it’s helpful to only touch things once. When he has a dirty dish, he rinses it and puts it right in the dishwasher. He doesn’t throw recycling into the garage to be dealt with later. He takes the five extra steps and puts it right in the recycle bin. I have saved so much time with this one trick.

Here are the top ten tips I have gathered and used over the years. Adapting even one small change can make a huge difference in your life.

Keep only what makes you happy. If it creates a warm happy feeling, it’s yours to keep. All the rest goes. Give yourself permission to have no guilt over issues such as wasting money, you may need it someday, or Aunt Bertha gave it to you. Let it go. Donate it to those who need it.

Start small. Clean out one drawer or cupboard. Small accomplishments motivate you to move to bigger projects.

Put things you aren’t sure about getting rid of in a storage box. Tuck it away for a year. If you don’t know what is in it and never needed it’s contents, donate the whole box. Don’t open it. Seriously do not open it!

Take a garbage bag and go around your house and fill it with items to donate. Do this once a week or once a month. Do it by room. Give the kids a garbage bag to fill from their rooms. Tell them they can exchange it for an ice cream date with you or one new small item they have been wanting.

In your closet, turn all hangers so they hook over the rod from behind. When you wear an item, hang it back up the normal way. In six months or a year look to see which clothes you never wore. Donate them.

Declutter by room. Once complete, you will feel drawn to be in that room all of the time which will motivate you to keep going.

After numerous different efforts were made to find out what was wrong with my arm, the doctor called with the MRI results, the only word I remember is... ‘cancer.’ How do you go about telling loved ones that you’re extremely sick? Let alone the thoughts of your own possible mortality,” he explained. “Cancer doesn’t just go for your body it goes for your soul.” Will was diagnosed with Diffuse Large B-Cell Lymphoma (non-Hodgkin) and underwent an aggressive chemo treatment called R-CHOP. As he recalled his treatment he noted, “I was blessed though, I had a secret weapon ... Nate Anderson. Now a healthy young man, Nate was diagnosed with T-Cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia at age four.” The son of Will’s sister’s good friend, Nate was Will’s ‘Cancer Coach,’ and made videos with encouraging words and provided support throughout treatment. “This extraordinary human being was there for me and truly is My Hero.” Talking with Will and other survivors that became part of his network, the importance of these relationships cannot be undervalued. Today Will has been cancer free for a year and a half. Through his journey, he became familiar with an important organization - The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS).

Broomfield High School Community Rallies Around Seniors Amidst COVID Disruptions

JAM Plans Persist, Help is Needed By Allison Eichner

With springtime comes renewed energy, warmer days, and many reasons to celebrate. For our high schoolers, springtime typically means spring sports, prom, and graduation. A year ago this time, the end of the school year radically changed for the class of 2020, and sadly the class of 2021 is facing some of those same hardships. But, Broomfield High School parents, along with students and BHS faculty and administration, have come together this spring to ensure Broomfield’s seniors are celebrated during their last semester of high school.

Kristen Stodden, a BHS parent, wanted to extend some of the special celebrations from the class of 2020 to the class of 2021. Across the country, high schools were organizing Adopt-ASenior gift donations for graduating seniors, so Stodden decided to bring this idea to Broomfield High parents. Through Adopt-A-Senior, parents and community members were able to buy and deliver personalized gifts to participating seniors. Stodden said the purpose of the initiative was to help seniors “feel supported, celebrated, and seen.” Gifts were delivered during the last week of February and BHS parent Facebook pages were flooded with photos of smiling students with their gifts. Because parents had to opt into Adopt-A-Senior on their student’s behalf, not all students were able to participate, but BHS teacher Stephanie Zechman made sure all the students that weren’t “adopted” were also celebrated with a gift. As much as parents feel the devastation of the ongoing COVID-19 situation for their students, students feel it even more. Senior Kara Monley and her friends compiled a list of all the events or traditions the class of 2021 has missed out on due to the pandemic. The list includes big things like prom, in person graduation, powder puff football, and Eagle Flight, but students also miss the little things that usually just come with being a senior: sports banquets, senior parking passes, and a class picture hung in the atrium. Monley said the seniors “have hope for graduation and hopefully a prom,” but mostly are excited to go back to school four days a week and be with each other. At Broomfield High School, almost more important than the prom dance is JAM, Broomfield’s after prom event. Just After Midnight has been put on for 30 years at BHS to help keep students safe on prom night. Funded, organized, and hosted by parent and community volunteers, JAM is designed to help celebrate seniors as their high school years come to a close. This year, Cristy Butcher, Stacey Hassell, and Erika Pazol, JAM co-chairs, have organized an outdoor celebration for juniors and seniors. On May 8 from 4:00 to 10:00 p.m. students can attend the celebration at Elizabeth Kennedy Stadium. While the event will not be associated with prom this year, Hassell noted, “Our hearts are

heavy for the current Senior class, they have had no opportunity to participate in any memories for the past year, therefore, we as a team, are determined to have an event.” JAM is fully funded by sponsorships and community donations, and due to the pandemic, student and parent volunteers have missed out on crucial fundraising opportunities throughout the school year. Hassell said fundraising has been their biggest hurdle this year and hopes the community can come through to support the class of 2021 in this way. The resiliency of these students is saddening but inspiring. Many silent promises for their youth have been stolen over the last year as they have missed out on everyday life. Although we have all suffered this loss in some way, let’s celebrate, support, and encourage our seniors as their time in high school comes to a bittersweet end.

“Climb the mountains and get their good tidings,”

urged pioneer conservationist and naturalist John Muir. Sometimes, though, we cannot fit a mountain hike into our schedule. For that reason, and many others, some of us choose nearby Siena Reservoir to break away for a pleasant hike. I mean, if we can’t hike the mountains for whatever reason, we can enjoy the mountain views, right? And that’s just one of numerous perks of sauntering, running or cycling around the pristine lake located in Broomfield’s Anthem neighborhood. An added bonus: The route is suitable for wheelchair bound folks or even youngsters in strollers. Depending on the time of day and the day of the week, the trail can be populated by a variety of visitors or by no one at all. Because of its negligible elevation gain, it’s also a good seasonal trail for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. However, like elsewhere in Broomfield, no water craft including kayaking and stand-up paddle boarding (SUP) are allowed. Start your trek from the large parking area on the west side of Sheridan Ave., about .25-mile north of Lowell Blvd. Drop down to the concrete trail and go left, clockwise. Expect negligible elevation gain as the footpath switches from paved to crusher fines. Look for the large buffalo statues as you follow the route. The developer originally planned on periodically relocating those buffalo elsewhere in the neighborhood, adding to the whimsy. Enjoy the area, being mindful to keep your dog leashed and away from the rocky shore. Lake-side fishing is allowed at Siena Reservoir, although any fishing is subject to State of Colorado regulations. Fishing licenses are required for anyone 16 years or older. The regulations can be obtained where licenses are sold, or at

Just like elsewhere in the mountains, there are good tidings to be found here, too. Because Siena Reservoir at Anthem is a public park and open from sunrise to sunset, visitors should be mindful of open space rules and regulations.
