researching and repairing the Fair owned equipment, getting the gas powered machines tuned up and ready for live demonstrations of early hay baling, bone crushing and log sawing. There are two new exhibits this year – first, the windmill that pumps water. The windmill is totally refurbished thanks to a generous donation by John Van Wormer, and illustrates how farms pumped water without electricity so important in rural areas. Also, there will be an exhibit of shingle making, an important component in the construction of homes and businesses. Flower and Fine Arts building, where you will find amazing artwork, flowers and vegetable exhibits vying for first prize. You can vote for your favorite while you are there. Would you like to see how we lived in the late 1800’s? The Altamont Fair has many museums to visit – Schoolhouse, Farmhouse, Village and Carriage, Circus, Auto and Antique Machinery. Enjoy a quiet moment exploring the Hardware store seeing early washing machines and vacuum cleaners. The Auto Museum is hosting Satan Cycles of Ravena. They will be building a motorcycle during the week -right on site!
The Altamont Fair is proud to host 4H competitions and exhibits. 4H is a youth development program for kids from 5-19 for both urban and rural youth in our counties. The 4H program provides an arena for positive experiences – “learning by doing” in so many areas. Stop in and enjoy 4H public presentations, club exhibits and the many competitions in creative arts, food science, animal science, natural resources, photography and more!
The Altamont Fair is the home of one of the finest Antique Farm Machinery collections on the East Coast. Much of the collection are gas engines, also known as “Hit and Miss” engines that were developed in the 1890’s and used until about 1930.
