Mae gan Oriel Davies rywfaint o sioeau a phrosiectau anhygoel ar gyfer misoedd oerach y flwyddyn. Yn gynnar yn yr hydref, byddwn yn cyflwyno tymor o ffilmiau animeiddio syfrdanol gyda Studies in Solastalgia, a Move It: Parts & Labour gan Seán Vicary – ffilmiau byrion gan dros 20 o artistiaid animeiddio. Mae'r ffocws hwn ar ddyfeisio creadigol yn parhau gyda Imaginary Worlds – dathliad o ddarlunio a chelf mewn llyfrau; a lansiad The Drawing Room – ein gofod prosiect arbennig sy'n cynnig ffordd hollol newydd i brofi a chymryd rhan mewn celf. Oriel Davies has some amazing shows and projects for the colder months of the year. In early autumn we present a season of breathtaking animation in Seán Vicary’s Studies in Solastalgia, and Move It: Parts & Labour – short films by over 20 animation artists. This focus upon creative invention continues with Imaginary Worlds – a celebration of illustration and book art; and the launch of The Drawing Room – our special project space that offers an entirely new way to experience and take part in art. We also welcome artists, Spike Dennis, Penny Hallas and Caroline Wright, who are showing their work as part of Oriel Davies’ TestBed programme. 10 Medi / September — 15 Hydref /October 2016 Mae'r arddangosfa hon yn dwyn ynghyd gwahanol linynnau o ymarfer Seán Vicary, ac yn cyflwyno gweithiau diweddar a blaenorol heb eu harddangos. Mae’r animeiddiadau aml-haenog hyn, sydd wedi’u crefftio’n gyfoethog ac sydd wedi’u trwytho mewn ecoleg dywyll, yn gwahodd y gwyliwr i archwilio tirwedd lled-ffuglennol dwys o arsylwi, casglu a dinistr. Mae pwyntiau cyfeirio'r artist yn rhychwantu gweithgarwch gwyddonol, hanesyddol a daearyddol ochr yn ochr â syniadau mwy personol, hunangofiannol a barddonol. Mae'r sioe yn cynnwys animeiddiadau graddfa fawr fel Taxonomy, sy’n ystyried casglu data, trais diwydiannol ac ein safbwynt dynol-ganolog wedi’i fframio o fewn ymerodraeth wyddonol a threfedigaethol; ac Ascension Ceiling, a ysbrydolwyd gan baentiadau nenfwd lledrithiol Baróc, tra'n ymateb i brofion dronau milwrol rheolaidd yng Ngorllewin Cymru ger cartref yr artist. This exhibition brings together different strands of Seán Vicary's practice presenting recent and previously un-exhibited work. Steeped in a dark ecology, these multi-layered and richly crafted animations invite the viewer to explore an intense semi-fictive landscape of observation, collection and devastation. The artist’s points of reference span scientific, historic and geographic activity alongside more personal, autobiographical and poetic ideas. The show includes large-scale animations such as Taxonomy that consider data collection, industrialised violence and our human-centric viewpoint framed within scientific and colonial empire; and Ascension Ceiling, inspired by Baroque illusionistic ceiling paintings while responding to the continued testing of military drones in West Wales near the artist's home. Other work, such as The Nose, explores an inner-landscape evoked by our sense of smell. It combines the scientific and the lyrical with an autobiographical subtext drawn from Vicary’s experience of coping with his mother’s dementia. In Hippocampus Dementis these solastalgic symptoms are finally materialized to the point where inner landscape meets outer.

Continuing a season of animation, this international programme of cutting-edge animated films by over 20 artists was selected from an open call. Parts & Labour, which is part of Move It *, explores animation as something that is ‘made’ – whether physically, digitally, or both – and is evidence that animation is a medium at the forefront of artistic and creative innovation, and the development of new techniques and approaches. Make / Play / Share A creative, social space, where art, performance, craft and film will be made, shared and inspired. Working in collaboration with artists and the public, Oriel Davies is creating The Drawing Room, a curiously inviting room assembled from found, collected, customized and bespoke objects. Everyday items, from sofas, cabinets and tables, to books, soft furnishings and ornaments, will be created and redefined. The Drawing Room is a multi-use space – an artist studio, boutique cinema, stage set, newsroom... A place for ideas, where discussion, learning, creativity and play will be encouraged. A space for hanging out and entertaining friends – Newtown’s living room in an art gallery.
The Drawing Room offers: artist residencies and commissions, community creative challenges, invitations to donate furniture or to use the space for your own event. Residents, schools, voluntary groups, established and emerging artists have the opportunity to get involved, contribute, make use of and experience this unique space. Mae'r arddangosfa yn cynnwys darluniau ar gyfer llyfrau plant ac oedolion, llyfrau artistiaid a nofelau graffig, animeiddiadau fideo, lluniau graddfa fawr a bach, printiau a phaentiadau. Yma, rydym yn dod ar draws chwedlau a chyfraith gwerin; straeon celwydd golau o bob math, gan gynnwys yr annisgwyl; yr ysgafn a’r chwareus: y tywyll a’r dirgel. Mae'r artistiaid hyn yn agor drysau i fydoedd a bywydau eraill. Maen nhw’n cyflwyno pobl, lleoedd a chreaduriaid; rhai wedi’u dyfeisio a rhai go iawn; o’r dyfodol a'r gorffennol, a'r presennol. Gyda'i gilydd, maen nhw’n cynnig dathliad mawr o bw ˆer rhyfeddol y dychymyg. Cynhaliwyd y dasg anodd o ddewis yr arddangosfa fuddugol gan banel oedd yn cynnwys y Curadur Alex Boyd Jones ac Amanda Farr, Cyfarwyddwr, Oriel Davies, a Chris Glynn, Uwch Ddarlithydd Darlunio, Prifysgol Fetropolitan Caerdydd, a awgrymodd thema'r arddangosfa. Mae llawer o’r gweithiau ar werth – sydd yn gwneud hwn yn gyfle delfrydol i brynu anrheg i rywun arbennig. Mae hwn yn rhan o’r Cynllun Casglu.
We are delighted to present Imaginary Worlds – a fantastic exhibition of artworks by 52 illustration and book artists from Wales, other parts of the UK, Europe and Australia. The exhibition includes illustration for children’s and adult’s books, artists’ books and graphic novels, video animations, large- and small-scale drawing, print and painting. Here we encounter: fables and folklore; tall tales of all kinds, including the unexpected; the light-hearted and playful; the dark and mysterious. These artists open doors to other worlds and other lives. They present people, places and creatures - invented and real - from the future, the past, and the here and now. Together, they offer a great celebration of the extraordinary power of the imagination. The exhibition results from Oriel Davies’ Open Call to artists to enter illustration-related work based around the theme of ‘Imaginary Worlds’. The call had a great response, with 130 artists entering. The difficult task of selection was undertaken by Alex Boyd Jones, Curator and Amanda Farr, Director, Oriel Davies, together with Chris Glynn, Senior Lecturer Illustration, Cardiff Metropolitan University, who suggested the exhibition’s theme. Many works are for sale – making this an ideal opportunity to buy a gift for someone special. Collectorplan is available.

Mae Spike Dennis yn artist rhyngddisgyblaethol sy'n archwilio ein cymdeithas ddigidol rhynggysylltiedig ac yn aml, yn defnyddio brodwaith i wneud hynny. Mae'r arddangosfa TestBed hon yn cynnwys gwaith newydd gan yr artist sydd wedi arwain o’i fentrais i greu brodweithiau ar iâ. Mae'r newid materol hwn yn ei bractis yn cyflwyno elfen newydd seiliedig ar amser i'r gwaith, sy'n cael ei weld naill ai mewn cyflwr o bydredd neu fel arall, yn cydbwyso’n ansicr iawn, ar fin dirywio.
Spike Dennis is an interdisciplinary artist who examines our digitally inter-connected society, often using the medium of embroidery to do so. This TestBed exhibition comprises new work by the artist that has resulted from his foray into creating embroideries in ice. This material shift in his practice presents a new time-based element to the work which is viewed either in a state of decay or else very precariously balanced on the brink of decline.

Penny Hallas lives in Llangattock, Powys. Caroline Wright lives in Framsden, Suffolk. Their shared concerns are realised in work that explores the position and experience of the insider and outsider, using TestBed to challenge ideas through drawings, exchange and display of objects, parallel walking, mapping of locations and other works. They have chosen the Skirrid Mountain, Monmouthshire as their site of investigation as they unpick what it means to be familiar and unfamiliar and the disturbance this causes. The flora project and tour comprised four new commissions, two artist residencies, three publications and an exhibition with work on loan from national and international artists, private collectors and UK National and Regional collections. The exhibition showed in different guises during its tour and included associated events. Visitors are advised to contact the venue directly for details.

Every Friday,12noon-1pm. Free Providing deeper engagement for the blind and partially sighted visiting flora through Audio Description Talking Pictures. Audio Description is putting visual images or events into words to improve access for blind and partially sighted audiences. flora is a National Touring Exhibition curated by Oriel Davies and supported by Arts Council of Wales. The flora Outreach on Tour schools programme is supported by the Ernest Cook Trust.

Mae pedwerydd comisiwn flora, a’r olaf mewn partneriaeth ag Oriel Myrddin, yn datgelu ffocws Anne-Mie Melis ar Afon Tywi ac yn benodol, y pwynt lle mae’r tir a’r dw ˆ r yn cwrdd – lle mae rhywogaethau planhigion prin a dan fygythiad a phlanhigion ymledol yn cystadlu i oroesi. Wrth dynnu sylw at natur fregus y cydbwysedd hwn ochr yn ochr â chwestiynau ecolegol ehangach, mae hi'n creu amgylchedd newydd neu gilfach ecolegol i blanhigion dyfu drwy greu swbstrad artiffisial. Highlighting the precariousness of this balance alongside wider ecological questions, she creates a new environment or ecological niche for plants to grow through the creation of an artificial substrate. Children / Family Activities We run a varied programme of workshops, activities and events for children and families. Family arts activities held during the school holidays allow parents and children to get creative in a fun and informal way. Working with a variety of different artists, these workshops are a great opportunity to experiment with a range of art techniques, explore creativity and learn new skills. Saturday 03 September & Sunday 04 September Drop-in sessions between 10.30am and 4.30pm at the gallery for Roald Dahl inspired craft activities, including mask making and hand puppets, plus make a large feature lantern for the Leaping Lights Festival taking place in Newtown. All welcome. Please note that parents/carers are responsible for children attending the activity. Children aged 8 and under must be accompanied by an adult/carer during the sessions.
Leaping Lights Festival
Friday, 30 September The Leaping Lights Festival in Dolerw Park Newtown celebrates the migration of salmon to local rivers. You are invited to join the parade and procession. Over 1000 people took part in last year’s breath taking and magical event. The parade ends at Dolerw Park with an installation of fire display by world-renowned artists. Life Drawing in September will be figure drawing with a twist, a Cabaret Sketching special! Participants will have an opportunity to sketch dazzling burlesque performer Satine Dimonté dancing, posing and unveiling in her tassels and feather finery. Oriel Davies 2016 Open Writing Competition Writers are invited to submit either poems (up to 50 lines each) or prose (up to 1,000 words each) that focus on the theme of ‘Imaginary Worlds'. The winning entries (one for best prose and one for best poetry) will receive a £50 voucher to spend in the gallery shop. Works should be in either English or Welsh. Entry fee is £3 per piece submitted.

Developing creativity, visual literacy, thinking and communication skills through the arts In partnership with the Severn Rivers Trust, Oriel Davies outreach workshops inspire learning about the salmon that migrate upriver through our town each autumn, as pupils in five local primaries make lantern sculptures for the Leaping Lights procession in Newtown on 30 September.

Seán Vicary’s exquisite and enigmatic animated films present plenty of inspiration for discussion and learning, exploring themes as diverse as how an artwork can represent our sense of smell, to the routine testing of military drones in West Wales’ airspace. The Drawing Room provides an exciting opportunity for young people to participate in an innovative, interactive art project at the gallery, as we link with students at NPTC Group, Newtown Campus and pupils from Gladestry C in W School, who work with artists to create new content for the evolving exhibition. Mae’r Oriel drws nesaf i’r orsaf fws a’r prif faes parcio sy’n edrych dros barc y dref. O’r A489, trowch i mewn i ganol y dref wrth y goleuadau traffig ac ar ôl 200 metr, trowch i’r chwith gyferbyn â Argos. Mae’r oriel bum munud ar droed o orsaf drên y Drenewydd ac ar lwybr beicio 81.
The gallery is next to the bus station and main car park overlooking the town park. From the A489 turn into the town centre at the traffic lights and after 200 metres turn left opposite Argos. The gallery is a five-minute walk from Newtown train station and situated on cycle route 81.
