The Unicorn Frappuccino: Yes, ~the~ unicorn frappuccino. Seen all over social media for its aesthetically pleasing rainbow sprinkles, this drink is “only available if you believe.” The drink itself is fluorescent purple mixed in with a blue syrup. Topped with whipped cream and the famous rainbow sprinkles, this drink was probably made to be Instagrammed.

The Butterbeer Fra ppuccino: For anyone invested in Harry Potter, this drink is made for you. Do not consider calling yourself a fan unless you order this frappuccino during your next Starbucks run. Consisting of toffee nut and caramel syrups, this drink is ideal for any Harry Potter enthusiast.

Editor’s Note Humanity runs on coffee; we start every day with it, and for some unfortunate souls, sometimes our day ends with it too. Whether it’s decaf or Columbian roast, coffee makes the world go round and fuels our college education. With how immersed we are in coffee culture, we thought it only fit to center this edition of Chews & Brews around common, fine ground (pun intended). Best Brunch Destination Vero Espresso Café has a coffee roast that is simultaneously flowery and citrusy. The outdoor seating at this house-turned-café gives Vero a very comfortable, laid-back ambiance. Vero also serves a full brunch menu that can’t be missed.

Vero Espresso Cafe Best Late-Night Study Destination Wandering Goat Coffee Company offers more mildly flavored coffee that is earthy with a hint of rose hip. It has a rustic, down to earth environment. More than half the customers can be found bent over a laptop working on homework or other productive things. The coffee at Wandering Goat is brewed every 20 minutes making for a very fresh taste in every cup.

Best Sophisticated Atmosphere Perugino serves as both a coffee shop and wine bar. The crowd is more sophisticated with a very professional and attentive staff.

The general rustic European and slightly industrial aesthetic feels very warm and homey. The drip coffee is very earthy tasting and seems to come right out of the French press.

Best Themed Decoration Tailored Coffee Roasters is located across from the popular 5th Street Market. The baristas are chill and helpful with their customers and provide a very vibrant tasting roast. The mostly black and white color theme makes it more chic, a perfect place for snapping a foodie photo or living in real-life ambiance.

Best Drip Coffee The Barn Light is a coffee shop that offers earthy and flowery flavored drip coffee. While serving as a coffee bar, it also serves as real bar with arcade-like activities positioned in the back of the shop. Located in the heart of downtown, The Barn Light has a rustic aesthetic and some of the best drip c offee around.

Best Cheap Coffee Theo’s Coffee House is a combination between a pizza place, coffee shop and bar. It has a very edgy, hipster aesthetic, but without the high price tag to match. Colorful murals case every wall in the dimly lit seating area.

There’s a stage at the edge of the seating that hosts live music and other performances.

Best Quick Grab Crumb Together is a quick service kind of coffee shop with quirky decoration and freshly baked cookies. The drip coffee tastes quite earthy, making it not overwhelmingly citrusy. It has very eccentric art, along with a convenient downtown location for quick pit stops.

Best Variety Provisions Market Hall makes coffee that has a more earthy taste with sweets to pair. At Provisions, there is a variety in food served— pastries, bread, and sorbet; there’s also a menu for sandwiches, soups and salads.

Provisions Market Hall serves as a family friendly gathering place, styled in a more European light. The architecture is open and airy, and it is located inside the 5th Street Market surrounded by chic boutiques.

Provisions Market Hall Best Pastries Espresso Roma is a brightly colored coffee shop located just off campus next to the University of Oregon Duck Store. This coffee shop hosts a lot of group gatherings where college students come to discuss interesting school related topics, or people in the community come to collaborate. While you’re working, pick up one of their delicious scones or muffins as a tasty, freshly made snack.

Espresso Roma Best Aesthetic Coffee Plant Roasters is located out in the direction of west suburban area of Eugene.

It has a chic, industrial aesthetic that fits the coffee shop ideal and will satisfy your desire for a classic cafe. The drip coffee has more tang to it than most places, but it offers a wide variety of options of different kinds of coffee you can order. The atmosphere offers a lot of natural light and is very open and airy, perfect for relaxation and Instagram.

We’ve all walked into a cafe for coffee and found ourselves drooling over the sweet treats. But even when my stomach is grumbling for a cafe classic, sometimes my wallet is growling even louder. Luckily, delicious cafe favorites are easy and fun to make at home, even on a student budget. Turn your home into a bakery with these simple recipes.

Directions:

1. Flip your egg carton upside down, and poke small holes in it. This will hold your cake pops while they set.

2. Melt chocolate chips for 30 seconds to a minute, and

add about a half teaspoon of coconut oil to help make the chocolate shiny and smooth.

3. Dip one end of a straw or stick into the chocolate, then

stick it into the donut hole and let it set in the fridge (this will help prevent the donut from just falling off).

4. Dunk the donut holes in the chocolate, swirling the

excess chocolate off. Decorate as you wish, then stick them in the prepared egg carton. Let them set in the fridge for a few minutes. Done!

Quick Vegan Cinnamon Rolls

Delicious Homemade Bagels

Pastry Ingredients:

2 cups flour

2 tsp active dry yeast

4 tsp baking powder

1 ½ tbsp granulated sugar

2 tbsp sugar

1 ¼ cups warm water

1/4 cup vegan butter

3 ½ cups bread flour

1 cup almond milk

1 ½ tsp salt

Poppy seeds, sesame seeds, shredded cheese, or other toppings

Directions:

1. Preheat the oven to 400 degrees.

2. While the sausage is cooking, slice the tomato and mash the avocado. Toast the bread (if desired).

e all have memories of our parents and grandparents reminiscing out loud about their favorite places to go when they were young; the bowling alley they visited every Friday, the perfect sightseeing point for date night and, of course, the tastiest pies around. For many Eugene residents and even out-of-towners, Track Town Pizza is the pizza parlour that they can’t wait to get back to.

Entering Track Town Pizza is like stepping into a time machine and coming out where the grass is truly greener.

Original walls adorned with sports fare and autographed photos of some of the world’s greatest athletes, this classic pizza parlour will relax you from the craziness of the real world and leave you feeling nostalgic and satisfied.

“We have a huge out-of-town following. People coming in from Portland or Seattle, even California, they’re coming to Eugene, they’re coming for Track Town Pizza,” says Tim Hill, long-time employee and general manager of Track Town Pizza. “They’ll stop in Eugene on their way through just to get our pizza.”

Maintaining historical memorabilia and respecting antiquity is important to Track Town, and they make sure it reflects in all aspects of the restaurant. The majority of the menu items are the original flavors and combos that were offered when the restaurant opened in 1977. Offering a plethora of beers on tap, a loaded salad bar and pizzas for all taste pallets and restrictions, Track Town is sure to satisfy everyone at the table.

“Tom Happy still comes in and gets pizza here,” says Hill, referencing one of the original owners of Track Town Pizza from back in the day.

The dedication at Track Town Pizza isn’t limited to their decorum and menu options either. Each pizza is lovingly handmade by long-time employees, made up of fresh produce, house sauce and dough made from scratch every day. Good pizza is so much more than slapping some mozzarella and Progresso on dough, and the chefs at Track Town take that to heart as they craft each individual pie.

“I’ve been working here for 12 years now, and it’s just so much fun. I had my first pizza here — the 100 Yard Dash — when I was a high school senior,” reminisced Hill on his time at the parlour. “It’s stuck with me and has been my favorite ever since.” Canadian bacon, pepperoni, sausage, oh my!

“I think the majority of people when you ask them what their favorite food is, the answer is pizza. Pizza does not fail very much, it always does well, and people will like it if you put out a good product, and we make good pizza,” says Hill.

As if making delicious pizza for generations and a whole community isn’t enough, Track Town takes it a step further and ensures they are giving the love back to Eugene.

Pizzas are regularly donated for fundraising events throughout the surrounding areas, and each year Track Town partners with different groups to raise thousands of dollars for local nonprofits and organizations alike.

Finally, the shining star of Track Town Pizza (besides, of course, the pizza) is their close relationship to the athletic history of the university and their namesake: Track Town USA. “We had a couple of athletes here for the 2016 Olympic Trials here eating with their families, and they were sitting underneath photos of them framed from probably the 80s,” says Hill excitedly. “They ended up autographing the photos, and those photos are still on the wall. Now whenever an athlete comes here and their photo is on the wall, I’m like, ‘you gotta sign it!’”

This hometown pizza parlour represents the incredible roster of athletes that have come out of the University of Oregon, and has developed a close relationship with many of them over time. This only serves to add to the quintessential ambiance of Track Town Pizza, sealing the deal with framed and autographed photos by some of Oregon’s greatest.

“People feel like this is the home of track and field. The feel of those people being here, representing Oregon, and it’s just really cool to have them here,” concluded Hill.

Whether you’re looking for sports history, a lunch or dinner spot for the whole family or just some darn good pizza, Track Town Pizza is the place for you.

Examining the Magic of Equiano

Words by Lucille Shadburne | Photos by Keven Salazar Oregon is a state well known for its abundance of coffee shops and the hipsters that tend to gravitate toward them, and Eugene has no shortage of stylish coffee-enthusiasts. While most of the coffee shops are supported by local coffee roasters, one roasting company in particular is especially community oriented and stands out among the crowd. Equiano Coffee Company is a local coffee roaster run by a couple native to Eugene. The “mom and pop” fashion that Equiano Coffee exercises makes it feel more accessible as a coffee provider and allows you to stay connected to the community while you caffeinate.

Okon and Gloria Udosenata have a particular passion and affinity for coffee. “I have been working with coffee for 15 years and my wife, Gloria, has been working with it for about 20 years,” shared Okon. He originally started making roasts off of an old modified grill he owned and experimenting with beans.

“I think it was 2016, Okon entered a roasting competition and ranked nationally. He did quite well, so they decided to start the roastery,” explained Jamie Peng, manager of Equiano.

Okon and Gloria were both raised in Eugene and started their roasting company about five years ago. They shared that it first started out as a roasting company and about two years later, they opened a “tasting room” that serves as a coffee shop where they serve their own roasts of coffee.

Equiano Coffee Company is focused on supporting small farms and businesses, using their company to support the community. “I’m always thrilled to work with any small business, especially farms,” Okon said. “I find that you always get the best quality and the best results when you work with close-knit smaller farms.”

Equiano Coffee Company works with farms mostly from four different areas across the country. Their coffee comes from places such as Cameroon, Colombia, Guatemala, Brazil and Vietnam. When Okon and his wife first started their company, Okon was excited to start serving and experimenting with exotic coffee flavors, but he has found that some of his flavors were too intense for people in the community. Since then he has worked on transitioning and serving more smooth, chocolatey flavors that are more approachable for all palettes in the community.

“We work with a variety of borbones that are all very sweet and chocolate-y,” Okon explained.

The newest roast that Equiano is currently providing their customers with is a robusta, which Okon describes as being a bold, dark coffee.

“Robustas can be a little intense sometimes,” the manager Jamie explained. “Sometimes a little too intense for people, but a good intense.”

However, Okon describes this particular one as being “special.” He says that the roast is a little more syrupy and definitely a “treat to taste.”

While Okon and his wife Gloria do a lot to be involved in the community and to support it, Okon also stresses that small businesses need support from the community as well in order to succeed. He says the best thing people can do is to “show up” to community events and to businesses in the community. Just being present helps helps businesses or communities survive and thrive, an ideal the Udosenatas embody themselves “We try to work with people in the community to bring our customers the best coffee experience.”

Okon stated. “We just try to educate people in the community along with provide a high quality product.” He shared that his hopes for his café are for people who are excited about coffee to come together to share ideas and to connect with each other.

COFFSEASON COFFEE EE The sun is finally out, which means it’s officially iced coffee szn. It’s time to swap out your usual hot cup of joe for a cold brew. Whether you need a refreshing drink or a midday caffeine fix, here are a few ways to incorporate iced coffee into your life - from at home to on-the-go.

HANDCRAFT AT HOME Plain ol’ iced coffee is super simple to DIY - just combine coffee with ice (and sugar and milk, if you’re into that).

But there are plenty of easy, budget-friendly ways to up your iced coffee game.

Coffee Ice Cubes If you’re like me, and love iced coffee but hate when the ice melts and waters it down, freeze some coffee in an ice tray the day before. When these cubes melt, they’ll only add to your caffeine consumption.

DIY Simple Syrup You can add sugar directly to iced coffee, but even with vigorous stirring, it’s difficult to dissolve. Add some sweetness - without the graininess - to your drink by making your own simple syrup.

Dissolve ½ cup sugar in 1 cup water, let cool, then stir in ½ tsp of vanilla extract.

Feeling lazy? Look for iced coffee concentrates from wherever you get your groceries. Simply add water, ice and go!

Sit, Sip and Savor Falling Sky I know what you’re thinking - coffee at a pizza joint?

Cafe Marche The Jordan Schnitzer Art Museum Cafe Marche, is a quiet oasis amongst the campus bustle. Their gated outdoor seating area is perfectly sheltered from crowded campus walkways around the Knight Library.

It gets plenty of shade, making it an excellent place to cool off with an iced coffee.

Grab it To-Go Running between classes, but in need of a pick-me-up?

Lucky for us Ducks, there are countless places on and around campus to grab a cold brew.

Brews on a Budget If you don’t already love Espresso Roma, are you even a coffee person? This locally-owned cafe off campus on 13th offers iced coffees, lattes, blended coffees - you name it. All of their drinks are budget friendly (starting at just $2), and delicious, making them well worth your coin.

Campus Cafes Cafes across campus conveniently supply your cold brew needs - from Cafe Verso in the Knight Library, to Elements Cafe in the Science Library and Willcox Hearth Cafe in Lawrence.

Bottled Bean Juice Bottled iced coffee can be a hit or miss, but some of the best you can pick up on campus include Califia Cold Brew, Starbucks Cold Brew and Iced Lattes.
