The Young Professionals Company at OCT presents:

Written By Madeleine Adriance Directed By Matthew B. Zrebski Read an exclusive interview with Madeleine here!

DIRECTOR’S NOTE In 2023, it is fairly uncommon to hear the term “World Wide Web”. And yet, this ubiquitous phrase from the past could not be more relevant. Now well beyond the mere internet – various technological threads are spun into the fabric of every aspect of our lives. There is indeed a world wide web. And we are caught in it...all while we simultaneously spin it. When do we discover ourselves as the flies – wrapped, trapped, drained of life? And when do we realize we are the spiders – hunting, stalking, preying upon? While we are all affected by this duality, no group is more impacted than the emerging generation. The supremely gifted Madeleine Adriance has delivered her play at the perfect time. Artistically, working on this production has been exhilarating...tackling the sophisticated blend of naturalism with metaphor...crafting the quick shifts of character with this extraordinary cast... working to distill the storytelling into its minimal components in this intimate performance venue. This piece of writing is truly “of the stage”, embracing the full potential of theatre – all due to Madeleine’s deft approach to complex material. But... On another level, one more personal...this experience has been monumentally frustrating. For the stories and issues illuminated in this play are all too familiar. And yet, somehow, at almost any given moment, one can read a news article or hear a political speech or sit on a committee where something to the effect is asked, “what is happening to our kids?” I posit this is a false mystery. We know what’s happening – and we have known. How dare we “wonder” what causes spikes in depression, anxiety, and a host of other mental and emotional turbulence? How dare we “wonder” why people are becoming more violent, less tolerant, and generally more nihilistic? Look at what’s in your hand. The minicomputers in our palms - the “likes”, the follows, the hashtags, the shares, the memes, the viral content that is, indeed, a virus...has infected everyone and everything. This revolution of technological connection that was supposed to make everyone closer and more connected – has, through nefarious algorithmic manipulation, taken a sledgehammer to humanity. And so...empathy withers. Cruelty, fueled by narcissism, blooms. Where is the will? The will to address media literacy with the ferocity it deserves...? The will to treat screen time as the drug it is...? The will to demand nuance in conversations around morality and politics...? The will to see that the rise in violence is related to an ever-mounting sense of isolation? Where is the will to help the kids...and in turn, save ourselves? Oh...it’s so easy to become cynical. But in SPIDER, there are myriad beams of hope... Madeleine allows moments of authentic, loving connection in her play – as characters remember to engage with care and grace. Like many great works for the stage, this piece presents a choice...we need not be the spider or the fly...we may, in fact, deny this dangerous web altogether. With the will...
