Happy New Year and Welcome to OCT’s 35th Anniversary Season! My name is Jenn Hartmann Luck, and I am thrilled to be here as the new Producing Artistic Director for Oregon Children’s Theatre! I have been eager to finally welcome you to an OCT show since my arrival in Portland and what better way to kick off the new year than with TWO beloved titles for youth and families! As we all continue to recover from the impacts of the pandemic, I believe it is more important than ever before to gather in community and celebrate the human spirit. That’s why I love live theatre and why it is our mission to create exceptional theatre experiences that transform the lives of young people. So, whether you’re a little bunny doing anything you can to avoid going to sleep in the Great Green Room, or a demi-god preparing for your killer quest at Camp Half-Blood, I can’t wait to celebrate life with you. I am honored to be part of the OCT Family and look forward to meeting you all at the theatre!

Jenn Hartmann Luck Producing Artistic Director

Director’s Note Margaret Wise Brown created worlds that were simple and yet rich, telling her timeless stories through small objects set within elaborate tableaux. How many times can we read “Goodnight Moon” and keep making discoveries about the secrets she playfully hid among the pages? A little mouse, seen on every page, the steadily moving clock hands, the details in the pictures on the walls? But Brown knew that these rich and abundant images would be even more impactful by placing them alongside pages of sparse nothingness and distant stars. Bringing this world to life has been a joy...who wouldn’t want to go to “work” in the Great Green Room?! And this timeless story reminded us over and over that simplicity and complexity live right next to each other in this life. The richness and abundance of imagination, play, and friendship are made more special by the quiet simplicity of connection, care, and the wonder we feel when we look up at the night sky. The world we are bringing our children up in is not simple. There is conflict, uncertainty, and the danger of a changing planet on the horizon. But Margaret Wise Brown, a queer woman publishing books in post-war 1947, knew the pain of the real world very well. She also knew how much adults and children alike need quiet, safe worlds to come home to, to remember and hold close when life gives us strife. This production of “Goodnight Moon” is our gift to this broken world. A safe, loving space where you and your child can laugh and cuddle and imagine together for an hour. We hope that today is a simple, joyful memory to hold onto when the world is full of complexity and pain. The Great Green Room will always be there to return to when you need a reminder of what really matters: connection, care, and wonder. Lauren Jost Director, Goodnight Moon

Oregon Children’s Theatre does not have a physical box office at this time; please contact us by phone or email at info@octc.org if you need additional support. Wheelchair seating is available at all performances and should be reserved in advance through the box office. Select performances will be sign interpreted and are indicated on OCT’s website. Welcome to the Theatre! We’re so happy you’re here! Whether this is your first time at a play, or you’ve seen many before, here are a few things to expect and ways to enjoy the show! Be Attentive: Look and listen to the actors and musicians on stage. Notice how the costumes, scenery and music help tell the story. You may even be invited to sing along! Be Careful: Remember that, during the performance, the lights in the theater will be dark, so if you need to move around it is best to go with a parent. Be safe by walking instead of running in the theater. Staying seated in your chair (or on a parent’s lap!) while keeping your hands and feet to yourself (not kicking the seat in front of you) will make sure everyone around you has a safe space to enjoy the show! Be Kind by laughing when something is funny and applauding after songs! This lets the actors know you’re having a good time. We can also be kind by making sure the folks around us can see and hear the show. It’s easier for everyone to see and hear when we’re in our seats and listening carefully.

Remember that no food or drinks are allowed inside the theater during the performance, so enjoy your snacks outside before the show begins. If you feel overwhelmed and need to take a break, you can leave the theater at any time, just make sure you go safely with a parent. When you’re ready you can come back to see the rest of the show! Parents, please remember that the video or audio recording of this performance by any means is strictly prohibited. Please turn off or silence any mobile devices that may make noise during the performance.

Thanks for coming, and enjoy the show!
