JANUARY 21-FEBRUARY 18, 2024 NEWMARK THEATRE

Happy New Year and Welcome to OCT’s 35th Anniversary Season! My name is Jenn Hartmann Luck, and I am thrilled to be here as the new Producing Artistic Director for Oregon Children’s Theatre! I have been eager to finally welcome you to an OCT show since my arrival in Portland and what better way to kick off the new year, than with TWO beloved titles for youth and families! As we all continue to recover from the impacts of the pandemic, I believe it is more important than ever before to gather in community and celebrate the human spirit. That’s why I love live theatre and why it is our mission to create exceptional theatre experiences that transform the lives of young people. When I think about how excited I am that The Lightning Thief is my Portland Directorial Debut as Producing Artistic Director at OCT, the songwriter in me always return to these lyrics: SALLY Normal is a myth Everyone has issues they’re dealing with PERCY Mom, if you’re weird, you’re weak SALLY That’s where you’re wrong The things that make you different Are the very things that make you Strong So be strong. Lyrics from “STRONG” from The Lightning Thief: The Percy Jackson Musical

This is the moment when Sally Jackson, Percy’s mom, explains to him that his differences are what make him strong, not weak. That being “normal” is a total myth and that we are all stronger when we lean into the things that make us different. I relate to these lyrics on so many levels. As a human, as an artist, as an educator, and as a mother of two. Percy is such a raw, vulnerable character, thrown into a situation he wasn’t even remotely prepared for. Struggling in school, struggling with friends, struggling at home – he could have never imagined the greatness that lied ahead of him. That is my wish for us all. For every person - young & old – to know that there is greatness within. We don’t even have to fight monsters to prove it. Thank you for going on this awesome, dangerous, scary, and thrilling heroes quest with us. It’s going to rock!

Land Acknowledgment Every community owes its existence and vitality to those who came before us, and whose lives created the story that has led us to this moment now. Oregon Children’s Theatre respectfully acknowledges that we are on the unceded traditional village sites of the Multnomah, Cowlitz, Clackamas, Kalapuya, Molalla and many others who made their homes along the Columbia River. We respectfully acknowledge the stewards of the land and continue the practice of Land Acknowledgment to offer recognition, respect, and remind us of the true story of the people who were already here, and broaden our perspective on our collective history. In this spirit, Oregon Children’s Theatre pays respect to their elders, past and present. Please take a moment to consider the many legacies that bring us together here today.

Welcome to the Theatre! We’re so happy you’re here! Whether this is your first time at a play, or you’ve seen many before, here are a few things to expect and ways to enjoy the show! Be Attentive: Look and listen to the actors and musicians on stage. Notice how the costumes, scenery and music help tell the story. You may even be invited to sing along! Be Careful: Remember that, during the performance, the lights in the theater will be dark, so if you need to move around it is best to go with a parent. Be safe by walking instead of running in the theater. Staying seated in your chair (or on a parent’s lap!) while keeping your hands and feet to yourself (not kicking the seat in front of you) will make sure everyone around you has a safe space to enjoy the show! Be Kind by laughing when something is funny and applauding after songs! This lets the actors know you’re having a good time. We can also be kind by making sure the folks around us can see and hear the show. It’s easier for everyone to see and hear when we’re in our seats and listening carefully.

Remember that no food or drinks are allowed inside the theater during the performance, so enjoy your snacks outside before the show begins. If you feel overwhelmed and need to take a break, you can leave the theater at any time, just make sure you go safely with a parent. When you’re ready you can come back to see the rest of the show! Parents, please remember that the video or audio recording of this performance by any means is strictly prohibited. Please turn off or silence any mobile devices that may make noise during the performance.

Thanks for coming, and enjoy the show!
