CAT KID COMIC CLUB: THE MUSICAL
Book and Lyrics by Kevin Del Aguila • Music by Brad Alexander • Adapted from the CAT KID COMIC CLUB series of books by Dav Pilkey

Welcome to Oregon Children’s Theatre, and welcome to Cat Kid Comic Club: the Musical!

We are unbelievably grateful for the opportunity to share this production with you.

If your family is anything like mine, I know you love the Dav Pilkey universe, and I am thrilled that OCT is able to share the sequel to Dog Man: The Musical with our audiences this fall because of your support: this summer, families just like yours donated over $120,000 to our Urgent Appeal, making it possible to bring this exciting, hilarious, joyful celebration of friendship, imagination, and creativity to the Newmark stage.

You’ve kept thousands of children engaged outside the walls of the theatre in summer camps, education programs, and in-school residencies. You’ve also kept our staff employed and helped keep OCT’s doors open. Because of you—and the belief that OCT must continue providing the best programming for youth and families—we are here today. I am humbled with gratitude for your generosity. While we celebrate these incredible milestones, we also know that OCT is at a critical turning point—and many of you have asked us what is coming next.

We acknowledge that OCT must make changes to survive as an organization that can deliver the kind of quality and impact you expect. We know that we need to take time to reflect, reassess, and make thoughtful decisions towards sustainability, requiring time, attention, and dedication. For this reason, OCT has made the decision not to produce another mainstage show for the 2024/2025 season. This is not a decision we’ve made lightly: we know that families, educators, and children rely on us for exceptional theatrical experiences. But we must take time to do the work so we can serve the youth and families who need us the most for the next 35 years and beyond.

OCT is not closing its doors! In fact, we are already planning to bring OCT to our community in new ways by expanding our in-school programming opportunities and supporting local educators in their classrooms. We will continue offering our acclaimed classes and camps across the Portland metro area. Our award-winning Young Professionals Company, when not participating in advanced training and workshops, will produce three of their own shows, starting with the hilarious and family-friendly improv comedy show Impulse this December (tickets are on sale now!).

While we enter this stage of reflection and rebuilding, we invite you to stay connected and involved by enrolling your children in OCT classes, bringing our education team to your school for a residency, or attending a Young Professionals show with your family.

In a show of this support, we are thrilled to announce that Keller Foundation has provided OCT with a truly generous gift. From now through the end of the year, Keller Foundation will match every dollar OCT receives up to $75,000! Now is the time to show your support for OCT: make a donation today and invest in the future of Oregon Children’s Theatre today so we can thrive tomorrow.

Now, sit back and enjoy the outrageous, hilarious, supa dupa awesomeness that is Cat Kid Comic Club: the Musical!

With gratitude and joy,

Jenn Hartmann Luck

Dav Pilkey ®

Welcome to the Theatre!

We’re so happy you’re here! Whether this is your first time at a play, or you’ve seen many before, here are a few things to expect and ways to enjoy the show!

Be Attentive: Look and listen to the actors and musicians on stage. Notice how the costumes, scenery and music help tell the story. You may even be invited to sing along!

Be Careful: Remember that, during the performance, the lights in the theater will be dark, so if you need to move around it is best to go with a parent. Be safe by walking instead of running in the theater. Staying seated in your chair (or on a parent’s lap!) while keeping your hands and feet to yourself (not kicking the seat in front of you) will make sure everyone around you has a safe space to enjoy the show!

Be Kind by laughing when something is funny and applauding after songs! This lets the actors know you’re having a good time. We can also be kind by making sure the folks around us can see and hear the show. It’s easier for everyone to see and hear when we’re in our seats and listening carefully.

Remember that no food or drinks are allowed inside the theater during the performance, so enjoy your snacks outside before the show begins. If you feel overwhelmed and need to take a break, you can leave the theater at any time, just make sure you go safely with a parent. When you’re ready you can come back to see the rest of the show!

Parents, please remember that the video or audio recording of this performance by any means is strictly prohibited. Please turn off or silence any mobile devices that may make noise during the performance.

Land Acknowledgment

Every community owes its existence and vitality to those who came before us, and whose lives created the story that has led us to this moment now.

Oregon Children’s Theatre respectfully acknowledges that we are on the unceded traditional village sites of the Multnomah, Cowlitz, Clackamas, Kalapuya, Molalla and many others who made their homes along the Columbia River.

We respectfully acknowledge the stewards of the land and continue the practice of Land Acknowledgment to offer recognition, respect, and remind us of the true story of the people who were already here, and broaden our perspective on our collective history.

In this spirit, Oregon Children’s Theatre pays respect to their elders, past and present. Please take a moment to consider the many legacies that bring us together here today.

forThankscoming, and enjoy the show!

Author/Illustrator

When Dav Pilkey was a kid, he was diagnosed with ADHD and dyslexia. He was so disruptive in class that his teachers made him sit out in the hallway where he spent his time creating his own original comic books—the very first adventures of Dog Man and Captain Underpants. The globally bestselling Dog Man series has more than 60 million copies in print and translations in 47 languages. Cat Kid Comic Club is a pioneering graphic novel series that introduces kids to the art of comic making. Dav received a Caldecott Honor for his picture book The Paperboy. His stories are semi-autobiographical and celebrate friendship, empathy, and the triumph of the good-hearted. The publication of Dog Man: Big Jim Begins (December 3, 2024) will mark 38 years of Dav creating acclaimed books for children. A Dog Man movie from DreamWorks Animation and Universal Pictures will be in theaters worldwide in January 2025.

About Oregon Children’s Theatre

Founded in 1988, Oregon Children’s Theatre (OCT) has served well over two million children, teachers, and families. Its mission is to create exceptional theater experiences that transform lives. OCT is Oregon’s largest non-profit professional theater for young audiences and a resident company of Portland’5 Centers for the Arts. Performances are held weekdays for school audiences and on weekends for family audiences. OCT offers numerous school services including study guides, teacher professional development opportunities, in-school workshops, and an extensive outreach program. OCT’s Education Department offers year-round theater classes for children ages 3-18 and the Young Professionals Company, a year-round mentoring program for teens that includes professional level training, education, and public performances.

Funding for Oregon Children’s Theatre’s 2024–2025 season is provided in part by the National Endowment of the Arts, The Reser Family Foundation, the Shubert Foundation, the Regional Arts & Culture Council, the James F. & Marion L. Miller Foundation, the Autzen Foundation, the Oregon Community Foundation, the Oregon Department of Education, the Jackson Foundation, the Maybelle Clark MacDonald Fund, and the Oregon Arts Commission.

Oregon Children’s Theatre is a resident company of the Portland’5 Centers for the Arts and a member of TYA/USA and ASSITEJ, the international children’s theater association.
