OLD HWY 9

On October 16,1859, the abolitionist John Brown led his17men on a raid seizing the U.S. Armory and Arsenal in Harpers Ferry, WV. His plan was to gather up weapons and lead a slave revolt. They captured the watchmen and cut the telegraph wires, but let a train through which called for help. The slaves did not rise up and the armed townspeople trapped them in the armory. On October 18, Colonel Robert E. Lee and his troops marched into Harpers Ferry and brought the standoff to an end. A few raiders escaped, many were killed, the abolitionist leader was wounded. John Brown was tried, convicted and hanged on December 2 in neighboring Charles Town, WV.
