TACO Board Meets at Spring Show

The TACO Board of Directors met on Monday April 28, 2025, at the Homewood Suites, in conjunction with the TACO Spring Meeting.
The board individually shared industry happenings at the parks/businesses over the last several months. The consensus was that the industry was strong overall, but business was down slightly, 5-10% depending upon location. Expenses were up for the most part, especially insurance costs and property taxes.
The board reviewed the YTD financials through two quarters ending March 31, 2025. The fiscal year began October 1, 2024. Total Income was at $733,141.62 against an annual budget of $999,800. Dues from campgrounds and vendors were ahead of projections as was Spring Show revenue. Expenses throughout the period were at $512,623.69 against and annual budget of $995,195. This left a net income of $220,517.93 against an annual budget of $4,605. Much of the current net income will go toward running the organization for the last half of the year. The board approved the financials and recommended approval to the general membership at the Spring Meeting.
The board reviewed the parks/businesses that would be receiving awards at the Spring Show and the executive director reviewed the various aspects of the show and thanked board members for their assistance in setting up
various aspects of the conference.
The executive director covered the status of current marketing programs the association is involved in for the benefit of camping in Texas. Certain legal matters were mentioned that the association legal counsel is addressing including unfair utility billing, camper removals from parks for various reasons, etc. TACO’s legal counsel was available throughout the conference and in a TACO booth at the trade show. The new TACO vendor guide was handed out at the show and mailed to those not in attendance right after the show.
On the national front, Terry Munoz updated the board on OHI (the national camping association) programs. Michael Moore, the Assistant Executive Director recapped efforts he is spearheading with the Recreation Vehicle Industry Association (RVIA) and Campground Association Management Professionals (CAMP), of which he is president.
Randall Dally the TACO president and Legislative Liaison provided a complete legislative update as provided by TACO lobbyist, Ron Hinkle, was at the conference to do a live update.
The board set their summer meeting and adjourned.

On Monday April 28th, the Texas Association of Campground Owners, in partnership with the RV Technical Institute, hosted an eight-hour training session focused on RV repair basics.
A few dozen attendees participated in the workshop, which was held the day before the kickoff of TACO’s Spring Meeting and Trade Show, which was April 29 & 30th.

The first day of the Texas Association of Campground Owners‘ Spring Meeting and Trade Show was held on Tuesday (April 29) and featured several educational sessions, the opening of the show’s expo, and a casino night.
Around 200 attendees took part in the event, along with nearly 100 vendors.
Christopher Bornemann, senior director of government affairs for the RV Industry Association; Larry Brownfield, assistant vice president of franchise development for Kampgrounds of America Inc.; and Don Bennett, executive director of the Illinois Campground Owners Association and co-owner of Anderson Brochure Distribution Service; all took part in a session that focused on industry trends.
The session was moderated by Brian Schaeffer, president and CEO of TACO.
Bornemann highlighted the fact that camping is popular in any economic situation because of its affordability, and Bornemann, along with Bennett, highlighted the fact that the industry is in a positive place for future growth.
Buddy Allen, CSC manager with Suburban Propane and Chief David Vire, Safety instructor of the Alternative Fuels Department Oversight and Safety Division for the Railroad Commission of Texas led a session on “Getting the most out of Propane”.

Connections, a discount benefits program for park owners and state associations, highlighted some of the new benefits TACO is offering to its members, including discounts on music & movie licensing, propane, background checks and more.
AI was also a focus on Tuesday, with Mark Koep, CEO of Campground Views, highlighting the ways in which AI is going to transform the hospitality space. He encouraged attendees to take the time to “play around” with AI tools to see how the tools can help improve their businesses and to be better prepared for the future.

TACO Wraps Up Conference with Legal & Legislative Updates

Amie Mersmann, co-founder of Mersmann Consulting Group, LLC; Jayne Cohen, founder of Campground Consulting Group; and Heidi Doyle, of Utility Supply Group; kicked off the day with a session on trends in building and expanding parks.
The panel highlighted key items that developers and current park owners need to be aware of as they design and build park infrastructure, including the need for metered electricity, proper feasibility studies, what amenities should be offered, and ideas on how to set rates.
Another session, led by Blake Burris, senior account executive at Newbook, focused on eight things park owners can do to enhance their business.
Later in the day, Christine Taylor, TACO’s lead counsel, tackled campground law and best practices, including employment issues, eviction notices, ADA rules and more.
The show wrapped up with TACO’s annual advocacy update. Ron Hinkle, TACO’s legislative consultant, Michael
Moore, TACO’s assistant executive director, Brian Schaeffer, CEO of TACO, and Randall Dally, president of TACO, all took part in this session that highlighted the work that the association was doing on the legislative front.
Hinkle highlighted the association’s work on numerous bills, including:
• NFPA 1194 legislation
• Work to get better definitions for tiny homes
• A school start date bill that would expand summer vacation
• Bills focused on eviction issues
• Property tax relief issues
• Water supply issues, including a bill that would invest $1 billion into water projects
• Credit Card fee issues, including a bill that would allow campground owners to take off state and local taxes before charging the fee
Harris County Fire Marshal Laurie Christensen was a surprise guest at the event.
