OM turns 20. And this is an achievement we felt had to be celebrated in the right way. In 1997 when it was founded, the whole world was completely different and, at that time, Orologi & Market was the forefront of today’s blogs. We have to credit that version of the magazine for being absolutely avant-garde. Being innovative in the 3rd Millenium is everything but easy. There are plenty of magazines, plenty of blogs, there is plenty of everything but there is a great luck of humility, values and common sense. People like to talk. But have forgotten how to listen. Well, we take the challenge and that’s where we stand. We are story tellers, but you are, and will always

Avevamo promesso che avremmo affidato sempre con maggiore slancio la nostra narrazione alle immagini e, se nel mondo della moda è una pratica comune, in quello dell’alta orologeria sta diventando un must, anche grazie (o a causa?) di social media come Instagram e Pinterest che hanno aiutato a rendere più fruibili e dinamici i contenuti proposti dalle maison della Haute Horologerie. Quindi godetevi le pagine delle nostre “Roman Holidays” e di “A perfect day” in cui troverete marchi apprezzati dai cultori della bella orologeria moderna e vintage. A proposito di alta orologeria, non dimenticate l’appuntamento a Ginevra il 30 marzo, durante gli European Artistic Craft Days, per la cerimonia che attriburà i premi “Hommage à la Passion” e “Hommage au Talent”. We promised that we would have entrusted our storytelling to images and, if in the world of fashion it is a common practice, in that of Haute Horlogerie it is becoming a must thanks to (or because of?) social media like Instagram and Pinterest that have made more accessible and dynamic the contents offered by the maisons of Haute Horlogerie. So enjoy the pages of our “Roman Holidays” and “A perfect day” where you will find outstanding brands loved by enthusiasts of both modern and vintage watchmaking. Quando ero bambino indossavo degli orologi quasi giocattolo, ma l’agenda non era mai dettata da me. Sì c’era la scuola, gli impegni extra scolastici, ma tutto era organizzato ed il tempo aveva una connotazione passiva. Nella vita da adulto il tempo mi spaventa molto di più. Quest’anno, in particolare, è come se mi fossi svegliato all’improvviso e mi fossi reso conto che erano passati 10 anni...

Che profumo ha la primavera? Per me sa di mare al mattino presto, di sabbia sotto i piedi nudi, ma anche di Baselworld. Per questo numero abbiamo avuto il piacere di incontrare Antonio Calce che ci ha parlato del Laureato. C’è tanta Italia dietro un orologio che ha fatto, e continua a fare, la storia dell’orologeria. Un altro incontro, particolarmente gradito, è stato quello con Chabi Nouri, che dal 1 aprile p.v. assumerà l’incarico di CEO di Piaget.

Non me ne vogliano i signori uomini, ma è sempre un piacere quando una donna giovane e brillante viene chiamata alla guida di un marchio orologiero blasonato. A dimostrazione che, in un settore prevalentemente maschile, la bravura non ha bisogno di quote rosa.

Last but not least voglio presentarvi l’ultimo lavoro del mio carissimo amico Umberto Stefanelli. Otto anni di storia professionale raccolte in un bellissimo libro fotografico di cui ho avuto il privilegio di scrivere la prefazione. In attesa di gustarmi le novità offerte dalla più impotante rassegna di tendenza dell’industria mondiale dell’orologeria e della gioielleria scendo in spiaggia. Venite con me? Ad maiora!

What’s the perfume of spring? To me it smells the sea in the early morning, and the sand under my bare feet, but also of Baselworld. For this issue we have had the pleasure of meeting Antonio Calce who spoke to us of the Laureato. There is so much Italy behind a watch that did, and still does, the history of watchmaking. Another particularly pleasing meeting, was that with Chabi Nouri, who starting April 1 will be the CEO of Piaget. I hope my gentlemen friends won’t mind, but it is always a pleasure when a bright young woman is called to lead a famous watch brand. To demonstrate that, in a predominantly male industry, skills don’t need gender quotas. Last but not least I want to present you the latest work of my dear friend Umberto Stefanelli. Eight years of professional history collected in a beautiful photo book of which I have had the privilege to write the foreword. Waiting to enjoy the new features offered by the world’s most significant fair in the watch and jewellery industry, I go to the beach. Do you wanna come with me? Ad maiora!

L’artista italiano Stefano Bolcato per la mostra “People” ha preso ispirazione da famosi ritratti dei grandi maestri d’arte e li ha replicati sostituendo i volti con le facce delle minifigure Lego. Questi originali olio su tela riproducono in modo originale il Dante di Botticelli, Frida Kahlo, Da Vinci e Andy Warhol. Bolcato ha iniziato a disegnare da autodidatta alla fine degli anni ‘80. Negli anni ‘90 ha seguito alcuni corsi accademici tra cui la libera Accademia di disegno presso l’Accademia di Belle Arti di Roma, con Alfonso Avanessian ed i corsi della scuola di arte ornamentale con Giovanni Arcangeli.

Italian artist Stefano Bolcato recently took inspiration from famous portraits by art masters and replicated them with Lego faces in place of the original icons for the exhibition “People”.

These extremely original oil of canvas reproduce Botticelli’s Dante’, Frida Kahlo, Da Vinci as well as Andy Warhol. Bolcato started drawing as a self taught student at the end of the 80s. In the 90s he followed some academic courses amongst which the free academy of life drawing at the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome, with Alfonso Avanessian and the Ornamental Art School courses with Giovanni Arcangeli.

Domestic violence, substance abuse, plastic surgery, curvy and soft shapes, racism and environmental disasters are just some of the issues appeared, from 1988, on the covers and pages of Vogue Italy. As far as the idea jars with the essence of what we imagine a fashion magazine should be, the editor Franca Sozzani, good for us, decided that commentary and social criticism were the glue for a publication like Vogue. Franca, who passed away in December 2016, had a precise idea of the role of her magazine, in contrast with the obsessive pursuit of celebrity that surrounds the fashion industry. Vogue Italy, strong both visually and intellectually, was a reflection of both the publisher and the woman. To Franca Sozzani, words and pictures should tell the industry without forgetting where and when this was. Because fashion, in its double meaning, moves away from clothes to be related to behavior: it is a variable of society, which concerns the ways of life and the customs. Therefore, a monumental magazine like Vogue, in presenting fashion, why should forget about ‘fashion’? This, under the lead of Franca Sozzani, didn’t happen. Flipping the pages of her publications one realizes, appreciates the choice, the risk and the resulting growth. And one thanks.

Luca, qual è il tuo rapporto con il tempo?

Quando ero bambino indossavo degli orologi quasi giocattolo, ma l’agenda non era mai dettata da me. Sì c’era la scuola, gli impegni extra scolastici, ma tutto era organizzato ed il tempo aveva una connotazione passiva. Nella vita da adulto il tempo mi spaventa molto di più. Quest’anno, in particolare, è come se mi fossi svegliato all’improvviso e mi fossi reso conto che erano passati 10 anni...

Da professionista qual è il valore del tempo? È un po’ la moneta di scambio, ma non solo nella mia professione. In fondo è dalla creazione del calendario gregoriano che il tempo è quasi una forma di schiavitù. O di ossessione. Da attore, forse perchè sono stato un piccolo produttore, cerco di farne perdere il meno possibile. Un po’ per natura, un po’ per rispetto, tendo ad essere molto puntuale, tanto che gli amici mi prendono quasi in giro.

Quindi ti serve un orologio..

Mi serve un orologio e, soprattutto, un orologio molto preciso! Quello che indosso (Montblanc Time walker Chronograph Automatic UTC) mi piace particolarmente perchè si coniuga alla perfezione con la mia natura sportiva.

L’incontro con Montblanc mi ha fatto scoprire il mondo dell’orologeria, che racchiude tante professionalità e che, e questa è una cosa che non immaginavo, ha un grande impatto emozionale.

As a professional what’s the value of time?

It’s a bit the bargaining chip, but not only in my profession. At the end, it is from the creation of the Gregorian calendar that time is almost a form of slavery. Or an obsession. As an actor, maybe because I was a small producer, I try not to make people lose it because of me. Because of my nature and for a matter of respect, I tend to be very punctual, at the point that my friends almost make fun of me…

Then you need a watch..

I do need a watch and, above all, a very accurate one! I particularly like the one I wear (Montblanc Time walker Chronograph Automatic UTC) because it perfectly matches my sporty nature. The meeting with Montblanc made me discover the world of watchmaking, which encompasses many professions and is - and this is something that I never imagined - of great emotional impact.

Mondorologio SIHH 2017 L’edizione 2017 del Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie ha tenuto il passo dei cambiamenti iniziati nel 2016 e l’arrivo di nuovi partner ha portato il numero totale degli espositori a 30. L’SIHH si posiziona come la sede internazionale per eccellenza dell’orologiera apprezzata da un vasto pubblico giacchè, quello che è sempre stato un evento di settore, ha aperto le porte al pubblico nell’ultimo giorno. Un’iniziativa coronata da successo, dimostrato dal numero record di visitatori durante tutta la settimana. Nel 2017 le presenze sono aumentate del 10% con un totale di 16’000 visitatori compresi 1’200 giornalisti e 2’500 visitatori pubblici nella giornata di venerdì, ultimo giorno della fiera. Il successo del SIHH 2017 non era affatto scontato e rappresenta un’ottima ragione per essere ottimisti. Tutte le Maisons hanno dimostrato di essere in grado di adeguare i propri prodotti agli attuali trend di mercato che sembrano essere più in linea con la sua progressione storica, lasciandosi alle spalle gli anni di esuberanza, decisamente rari in un settore maturo. Questo ritorno ad una realtà più tangibile è stato trasferito anche nelle collezioni. I brand hanno attenuato loro offerta e hanno esteso l’offerta entry-level mentre l’orologeria altamente tecnica e preziosa continua a spingere “oltre” i limiti meccanici ed artistici della professione. Queste le qualità chiaramente in evidenza al SIHH 2017 per un anno che vedrà senza dubbio l’orologeria tornare ad avere basi forti e concrete.

The 2017 edition of Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie kept up the pace of changes that began in 2016 and the arrival of new partners brought the total number of exhibitors to 30. The SIHH now positions itself as the international venue for watchmaking excellence enjoyable by a wider audience since, what has always been an industry event, opened its doors to the public on its last day. This initiative was crowned with success, shown by the record number of visitors for the entire week. In 2017 attendance rose by 10% to 16’000 visitors including 1’200 Journalists, and 2’500 Public visitors on Friday, last day of the exhibition. The success of SIHH 2017 was by no means a foregone conclusion and there is every reason to be optimistic. All the Maisons proved to be able to adapt their products to the current contextand fine watchmaking now appears to be more in phase with its historic progression, leaving behind the years of exuberance that are rare in such a mature sector. This return to a more tangible reality showed in the collections. Brands “toned down” their offering and extended their entrylevel ranges while technical and precious watchmaking continues to push the mechanical and artistic limits of the profession. These qualities were clearly in evidence at SIHH 2017 for a year that will undoubtedly see fine watchmaking return to a sound footing.

Ma se la cosa continua e dura nel tempo, significa che il locale ha raggiunto la sua maturità – spiega Luigi Sartini, chef del ristorante, gestito in sala dal nuovo maître Paolo Pinna – il nostro obiettivo è offrire un’accoglienza sempre perfetta ma semplice e diretta. Al centro della tavola c’è e ci deve essere il piatto. Il piacere di mangiare bene, anche molto bene, insieme con altre persone e in un ambiente gradevole. Per questo, le mie ricette utilizzano tecnica e creatività mantenendola sempre al servizio di concretezza e gusto di ogni ricetta o piatto”. “Nei miei piatti utilizzo un numero limitato di ingredienti, Sapori e profumi rimangono nitidi precisi, ottenendo una semplicità in grado di esaltare le caratteristiche di una ricetta”, continua Luigi Sartini. Nascono così i cappelletti ripieni con casatella e capperi, su letto di lattuga e tartufo nero, gli spaghettini freddi al coriandolo su gazpacho, la scaloppa di rombo con bietoline e salsa alla bottarga. Non mancano neppure le scelte solo vegetariane: dal recupero di una classica panzanella a dei mezzi rigatoni che si sposano con le verdure del territorio: stridoli ed erbe di campo. “Dall’inizio di quest’anno si è aperta per me una nuova avventura umana e professionale. Io e la mia famiglia, in particolare mia figlia Melania che si occupa della condizione aziendale delle nostre attività di ristorazione catering, abbiamo ricevuto il testimone della gestione diretta del locale dalla famiglia Righi – conclude Luigi Sartini – la stella ci riempie di gioia perché dimostra come la qualità di quanto facciamo si sia mantenuta di altissimo livello. Continuiamo a soddisfare le richieste dei nostri clienti. Dal semplice turista all’appassionato della cucina sempre alla ricerca di una grande esperienza della tavola”. In questi anni, Luigi Sartini ha cucinato non solo per i tanti clienti che tornano da tutte le parti d’Italia ma anche per il Papa Emerito Benedetto XVI, Giorgio Napolitano, Romano Prodi, così come per figure quali il presidente della FIA, Jean Todt e personaggi dello spettacolo come Sofia Loren e Paolo Cevoli. “Occuparsi di pranzi di altissimi livelli per qualità di ricette e di servizio, significa crescere e migliorarsi. In quelle situazioni non è consentito nessun errore. Tutto deve essere perfetto – spiega Luigi Sartini –. Per i nostri ospiti ho creato menù particolari a adatti alla circostanza. Per il Presidente Napolitano insalata di capesante e germogli di barbabietola rossa e finocchi, con salsa d’agrumi, mentre per il Papa Emerito, a fine pasto abbiamo proposto un leggerissimo gelato di lampone”.

The best table of the Republic of San Marino is listed among the 343 best Italian restaurants. Again, the 2017 edition of the “Michelin Guide”, the sacred text of half globe’s gourmet, awards with one star the best restaurant of the Republic of freedom. The award arrives at the ‘Pianello’, with its breathtaking sights of Rimini and the Riviera, for the tenth year in a row, confirming also this year its elite position among both Italian and international restaurants. «Being starred for one year or two can be the result of a feat. But if it goes on and lasts over time, it means the restaurant has reached its maturity», tells Luigi Sartini, chef of the restaurant managed by the new maître Paolo Pinna. «Our goal is to offer an always perfect though simple and direct welcome. Dishes are (and must be) obviously the core of our activity.

The pleasure of good food in good company and in a pleasant atmosphere. That’s why in my recipes I use technique and creativity, always putting them to use in concreteness and taste for every course». «In my dishes, I use a limited number of ingredients, so flavours and fragrances remain vivid, achieving a simplicity that enhances the features of a recipe», says Luigi Sartini. This is how he created his cappelletti stuffed with Casatella cheese and capers on a bed of lettuce and black truffle, his cold noodles with coriander on gazpacho, and his flatfish escalope with Swiss chard and fish-eggs sauce. Not lacking also some vegetarian choices: from the rediscovery of classic ‘panzanella’, to mezzi rigatoni combined with local vegetables, stridolo leaves and wild herbs. «Since the beginning of this year, a new human and professional adventure has started for me. My family and I, and especially my daughter Melania who deals with our catering business, were passed the baton of the direct management of the restaurant by the Righi family», says Luigi Sartini in conclusion, «so the Michelin Star fills us with joy because it shows how the quality of what we do is still at the highest level. We keep meeting our customers’ demands, from simple tourists to cuisine enthusiasts always looking for a great food experience». In recent years, Luigi Sartini has cooked not just for the many customers who keep coming back from all over Italy, but also for the Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI, Giorgio Napolitano, Romano Prodi, as well as VIPs such as the President of the FIA, Jean Todt and show business celebrities like Sophia Loren and Paolo Cevoli. «Dealing with high-quality level lunches, as regards recipes and service, means growing and improving. In those situations, no mistakes are allowed.

The origins of LUXURY Today, luxury seems to be everywhere: we pause in front of the shop windows in Via Montenapoleone, Champs-Elysees or Bond Street, fascinated by those garments, those prestigious, expensive and refined watches and jewels, the beauty and high quality and uniqueness of which leave us speechless.

uando, cercando di andare oltre l’apparenza, ci chiediamo che cosa rende un bene o un brand di lusso ci rendiamo conto che, pur sentendo quotidianamente parlare di lusso accessibile, di democratizzazione del lusso o anche di iperlusso, non abbiamo chiaro ciò di cui si parla.

Eppure il quesito è fondamentale: se vogliamo essere in grado di vendere, comunicare e creare, o anche più semplicemente acquistare coscientemente il lusso, dobbiamo capire quale sia la sua essenza. Il concetto di lusso risale alla nascita dell’umanità: gli oggetti preziosi, i simboli esclusivi e gli stili di vita elitari sono sempre stati elementi che appartenevano alle classi dirigenti e le differenziavano dalle altre.

Nel corso della storia questa stratificazione sociale ereditaria che si basava su principi metafisici ha perso via via il proprio fondamento: in particolare, nel diciottesimo secolo, il razionalismo ha contribuito ad eliminare miti e giustificazioni trascendentali che stavano alla base della struttura sociale. Se da un lato questa stratificazione sociale di derivazione metafisica è sparita, dall’altro l’uomo inteso come animale sociale non ha potuto rinunciare ad una società ordinata con una qualsiasi forma di stratificazione sociale. Il lusso nella società odierna rappresenta il desiderio simbolico e sociale di appartenere ad una classe superiore, definita in base ai propri sogni e alle proprie aspirazioni. Ma attenzione: la cultura di una società definisce quali sono questi valori e questi sogni ai quali aspirare e ai quali tendere mentre i grandi brand del lusso li rappresentano. Non viceversa! Le marche di successo non impongono mai un valore ma lo colgono e lo

rappresentano nei prodotti e nella comunicazione.

L’uomo infatti è un essere libero e razionale e non vi è nulla che possa annullare totalmente la sua capacità critica davanti ad una scelta.

Proprio per questo motivo, oltre a questa dimensione sociale, il lusso ha anche una dimensione personale, estetica ed edonistica: ognuno in base alla propria personalità e al proprio gusto individuale sceglie ciò che incarna quei valori sociali che riconosce come veri e degni di essere vissuti: l’eleganza senza tempo di Chanel, la sensualità di Versace, il legame generazionale di Patek Philipp o la forza di Roger Dubuis. Il prodotto di lusso, però, deve avere determinate caratteristiche che lo rendono aspirazionale: presentare un forte contenuto umano di ingegno e creatività nella progettazione e manuale nella realizzazione, avere una complessità che lo rende esclusivo, essere creato per accrescere il proprio valore nel tempo grazie all’alta qualità nei materiali che lo compongono, ad un design iconico e una complessità tecnica, rappresentare un’alta cultura e un savoir-faire tramandato da generazioni, essere vicino al mondo dell’arte ma soprattutto far vivere un mito, una storia leggendaria che affascina e seduce. Tutti questi elementi giustificano il prezzo alto del lusso ma i soli “prezzi alti” non definiscono prodotti di lusso!

Per questo motivo, più che criticare i costi eccessivi di segnatempo con quadranti smaltati a mano, l’opulenza di bracciali con piete incastonate a mano dovremmo andare più a fondo e pensare più spesso a quei saperi che si tramandano da generazioni e a quegli uomini che con il loro estro, genio e talento hanno segnato la nostra storia. Senza di loro, cosa ne sarebbe di quelle vetrine che tanto ci affascinano?

When trying to go beyond this appearance, we wonder what makes a luxury good or brand, we realize that even though we daily hear about “affordable luxury”, “democratization of luxury”, or even “hyperluxury”, we have no clear idea of what we are talking about. Yet the question is crucial: if we want to be able to sell, communicate, create luxury, or more simply “to buy it consciously”, we must understand what its essence is. The concept of luxury dates back to the birth of humanity: precious objects, exclusive symbols and elitist lifestyles have always been elements that belonged to the ruling classes making them differ from the others.

Throughout history, this hereditary social stratification based on metaphysical principles has gradually lost its foundation: in particular, in the 18° Century, rationalism has helped eliminate myths and transcendental justifications that were at the base of the social structure.

While this social stratification of metaphysical derivation is gone, on the other hand, man (intended as a social animal) could not do without a regimented society with any form of social stratification. Luxury in today’s society is the symbolic and social desire to belong to a higher class, which is defined according to one’s own dreams and aspirations. But beware!: the culture of a society defines which are these values and dreams to aspire to and to tend to, while the big luxury brands represent them. Not vice versa! Successful brands never impose a value but they capture and represent it in products and communication.

Indeed, man is a free and rational being and there is nothing that can totally undo its critical capacity in front

of a choice. Precisely for this reason, in addition to this social dimension, luxury also has a personal, aesthetic and hedonistic dimension: everyone, according to one’s personality and one’s own individual taste, chooses what embodies the social values that he recognizes as true and worthy of being experienced: the timeless elegance of Chanel, the sensuality of Versace, the generational bond of Patek Philippe, or the strength of Roger Dubuis. However, a luxury product must have specific features that make it aspirational: it should have a strong human content (both brilliance and creativity in designing and dexterity in production), it should have a complexity that makes it unique, it should be created to increase its own value in time (since it is produced with high quality materials, iconic design and technical complexity), it should represent high culture and savoir-faire passed down for generations, it should be close to the world of art, but above all it should make a myth come to life, a sort of legendary story that fascinates and seduces. These elements justify the high price of luxury but the sole “high price” does not indicate a luxury product! For this reason, rather than criticize the excessive costs of timepieces with hand-enamelled dials, the opulence of bracelets with hand-set stones, we should delve deeper and think more about the knowledge handed down through generations, and about those men who have marked our history with their creativity, genius and talent.

What would those incredibly fascinating shop windows be without all this?

Jimi Hendrix’s Epiphone FT79 guitar sold for € 240,664 Nello scorso mese di dicembre è approdato da Bonhams, a Londra, un pezzo di storia del Rock’n’Roll. La chitarra acustica Epiphone FT 79 di Jimi Hendrix, una delle chitarre preferite del grande musicista, è stata messa all’asta. La leggenda del rock acquistò questa Epiphone FT 79 del 1951 usata (numero di serie 62262) per 25 dollari, a New York, dopo il suo primo tour negli Stati Uniti, portandola con sé nel suo appartamento di Upper Berkley Street, dove diventò il suo strumento quotidiano preferito, come afferma la fidanzata Kathy Etchingham.

Jimi aveva bisogno di una chitarra acustica per strutturare i riff che aveva in testa, visto che era già stato precedentemente sfrattato dalla sua abitazione in Montagu Square per via dell’uso in casa della chitarra elettrica e dell’amplificatore. Lo strumento ha un top in abete e i fianchi in acero, con una finitura sunburst tabacco e battipenna in tartaruga. Esistono molte immagini di Jimi con questa chitarra, prima che la cedesse ad Alan Parker, chitarrista dei Blue Mink, nel 1970.

Jimi ormai ci ha lasciati, ma è ancora possibile godere di uno degli strumenti che ha utilizzato per forgiare la sua leggenda.

A piece of Rock n Roll history is sold to Bonhams of London in December. Up for auction is Jimi Hendrix’s Epiphone FT 79 Acoustic Guitar, one of the great musician’s favorite guitars. The rock legend first acquired this used 1951 Epiphone FT 79 acoustic guitar (serial number 62262) for $25, in New York after his first US tour. He took it back to his Upper Berkley Street flat where his girlfriend Kathy Etchingham says it became his favorite daily use instrument. He needed an acoustic for checking out the riffs in his head because he had previously been evicted from his Montagu Square digs for practicing with an electric guitar and amplifier. The instrument itself has a spruce top and maple sides with a tobacco sunburst finish and tortoiseshell scratchplate. There are many pictures of Jimi with this guitar before he gave it to Blue Mink guitarist Alan Parker in 1970. Jimi may be gone but you can still experience one of the tools he used to forge his legend.

AMI A legendary “trio” tra gli orologi militari ‘nazionali’ rari torviamo lo zenith e l’universal cp-2

Molto ricercati dai collezionisti e prodotti su specifica della ditta A. Cairelli di Roma. Lo Zenith CP-2 fu costruito verso la metà degli anni ’60 in 2500 pezzi e rispetto alla produzione di serie differiva per essere antimagnetico, con una cassa più grande e per il contatore dei minuti a 30’ al posto del 45’. Il movimento è marcato Zenith 146 DP e non ha funzione fly-back. L’Universal CP-2 fu prodotto negli anni ’50, dotato sempre di una cassa da 43 mm di diametro; tra fondello e movimento c’è un coperchio para polvere a protezione del movimento. Il movimento è il calibro 287 Universal modificato dalla ditta A. Cairelli di Roma per la funzione fly-back. Sicuramente, dopo i leggendari Panerai, l’Universal e lo Zenith CP-2 sono gli orologi militari più famosi dell’esercito italiano. Sempre attuali dal punto di vista estetico, con un aspetto militare non troppo marcato e di dimensioni ideali rispetto alla tendenza contemporanea.Certamente il più raro e ambito del lotto è questo cronografo Universal rattrapante (cioè dotato di due lancette sovrapposte.

Dopo la partenza simultanea una delle due lancette può essere arrestata, indicando così una prima rilevazione del tempo). Il diametro è di 44mm, il calibro è un Valjoux 55 rattrapante con pulsante a ore 4 e il quadrante indica le 24 ore ed il contatore è a 16 minuti.

Much sought after by collectors and produced upon specifications of A. Cairelli in Rome. The Zenith CP-2 was built in the mid-’60s in 2500 pieces and differed from the mass production for being anti-magnetic, with a bigger case and the minute counter at 30’ instead of 45’. The movement is marked Zenith 146 DP and has no fly-back function. The Universal CP-2 was produced in the ’50s, always with a 43mm-diameter case; between the caseback and the movement there is an anti-dust lid to protect the movement itself. The movement is a Universal 287 caliber modified by A. Cairelli in Rome for the fly-back function. Surely, after the legendary Panerai, the Universal and the Zenith CP-2 are the most famous military watches used by the Italian army. Always present-day, from an aesthetic point of view, with a low-emphasized military look and ideal dimensions, compared to the contemporary trend. Certainly, the rarest and most coveted one of the lot is this Universal splitseconds chronograph (i.e. equipped with two overlapping hands. After the simultaneous start, one of the two hands can be stopped, thus indicating a first time recording).

The diameter is 44 mm, the caliber is a split-seconds Valjoux 55 with pushbutton at 4 o’clock, the dial indicates 24 hours and the counter is 16 minutes. It was produced in very few specimens for an exclusive use by the Officers of the Italian Air Force; it seems that it also came with an Eberhard pocket watch with a dial featuring the same characteristics.

PANERAI Exceedingly rare Panerai ref 6152-1 supplied to the Polizia di Stato, the Italian Police. Rolex movement and Panerai Crown device. Only 64 produced with these features and only 33 with “Luminor Panerai” dials like the present one. The “P.S. 02” engraved on the case back means that it was the second one assigned to the Polizia di stato. Panerai period leather strap. La X8E del 1912 è stata la prima Harley-Davidson con trazione a catena, nonché la prima moto dotata di frizione, parafanghi ed un motore da 1000cc a valvole meccaniche, oltre alla sella ‘fluttuante’ caratterizzata da una molla sottostante.

Tutti elementi che dimostrano come casa Harley si stesse lentamente modernizzando, nonostante ci siano voluti 3 anni per aggiungere un cambio a 3 velocità. Nel 1912 la Harley ne produsse due modelli, un monocilindrico e un bicilindrico, con trasmissione a cinghia o a catena e accensione a magnete.

Questa Harley-Davidson X8E del 1912, appartenuta a Steve McQueen, è perfettamente funzionante e la verniciatura originale di fabbrica è stata coperta con un bel rosso distintivo. Chissà se il nuovo proprietario la manterrà del colore scelto dall’attore o cercherà di ripristinare quello originale? Ad ogni modo, questa moto ha una storia incredibile. Basti pensare che dopo essere stata di proprietà di Steve McQueen, fari e cerchi sono stati aggiornati per partecipare a raduni e competizioni per moto d’epoca. Harley’s ‘full floteing’ (sic) seat featured a spring in the frame’s downtube - Harley was slowly modernizing, although it took 3 years to add a 3-speed gearbos.

Harley offered a single or twin-cylinder model in 1912, with belt or chain drive, and magneto ignition. This ex-Steve McQueen 1912 Harley-Davidson X8E is in full running condition, and it appears the original factory paint lurks under that distinctive red brush job. Will the new owner will keep that red paint as Steve maintained it, or attempt to discover the original factory job? In any case, the bike has a fantastic story. It should be noted that after Steve McQueen’s ownership, the wheel rims were upgraded for actual riding, and a headlamp added for vintage rallies. The Bonhams sale took place on January 26 at the Rio Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas.

EVERY INVESTOR’S OR COLLECTOR’S DILEMMA HAS ALWAYS BEEN THE SAME: WHEN IS THE TIME TO BUY? AND WHEN IS THE TIME TO SELL? text: francesca romano

“Una delle maggiori convinzioni, errate, dei possessori di orologi (non appassionati) è che qualunque orologio sia da collezione. A patto di avere oltre vent’anni” ci rivela Giovanni Varesi “e sebbene gli addetti ai lavori sappiano che non è così, per chi ha ereditato un orologio, magari da tasca e che ha più di 100 anni, sembra scontato che un segnatempo, indipendentemente dalle sue caratteristiche, sia un oggetto “da collezione”.

Un’altra convinzione, anch’essa errata, è che il valore di un oggetto sia dato dal metallo con cui è realizzato o dalla presenza di pietre preziose, anche se chi lavora nel settore sa bene che il peso del metallo nobile o la presenza di pietre non influenza la valutazione, sempre che non si tratti di un orologio gioiello con particolari connotazioni estetiche” aggiunge Varesi. E quindi, quali sono le caratteristiche che fanno di un orologio un oggetto da collezione? “Ce ne sono diverse. Sicuramente la desiderabilità. E per desiderabilità intendo il rapporto tra il numero di oggetti prodotti e il numero di soggetti che vorrebbero, e potrebbero, acquistarlo. Un esempio lampante ce lo fornisce, come spesso accade, Rolex.

Un Submariner ghiera verde, per quanto sia stato prodotto in un numero importante di esemplari e non sia un vintage nel senso stretto del termine, si sta rapidamente apprezzando. Al contrario, ci sono prestigiosi orologi complicati di altri brand, prodotti in 25 esemplari numerati che vengono venduti ad una frazione del prezzo di cartellino dell’epoca. Ciò dipende dal rapporto, più o meno favorevole, tra prezzo, reperibilità e desiderabilità. Un’altra caratteristica imprescindibile è la qualità. E il corredo. Mi spiego. Parlando di orologi da collezione, la garanzia e il corredo originale costituiscono un vero plus per tutti gli orologi in generale ma, nel caso di orologi vintage, una garanzia originale dell’epoca risulta essere un’eccezione alla regola che può far crescere il valore del prodotto anche del 30-40%. La qualità, invece, è una condizione necessaria per tutti gli orologi reperibili sul mercato in quantità normali, che diventa un enorme plus valore sugli oggetti rari e passa in secondo piano solo su oggetti unici o che appaiono per la prima volta sul mercato. Un’altra caratteristica che fa sempre la differenza è la provenienza. Sia che si tratti di un orologio importante di per sé o che sia un esemplare di un marchio meno noto, l’essere appartenuto ad un personaggio famoso costituisce un plus valore incredibile e il risultato in un’asta internazionale può passare da interessante a eccezionale o addirittura segnare un nuovo record mondiale per quella referenza. Pensiamo all’Omega Constellation appartenuto ad Elvis Presley. A fronte di un valore di mercato pari a circa 2.000-2.500 CHF, è stato venduto ad aprile 2016 da Antiquorum a $ 37.500. È evidente che la differenza tra il valore dell’orologio e l’aggiudicazione è data dal fatto di essere stato posseduto da un mito come Elvis Presley” ci spiega Varesi che aggiunge “Queste sono tutte variabili endogene all’oggetto, ma ce ne sono anche di esogene. Un fattore importante, ad esempio, è il numero di nuovi possibili investitori/ collezionisti che si avvicinano ad un bene rifugio relativamente “nuovo”. Non è un caso, infatti, se molti appartenenti al mondo della finanza si sono avvicinati, negli ultimi anni, agli orologi con intento speculativo. Non si parla di speculazione in senso negativo, anche perché non esistono finanziamenti finalizzati all’acquisto di orologi d’epoca. L’opinione diffusa tra gli addetti ai lavori è che l’orologio d’epoca di grande qualità non sia che all’inizio della sua scalata ai prezzi. Un altro fenomeno sono i capitali. Chiunque abbia un’idea dei capitali spesi in auto d’epoca, sa bene che basterebbe che un 10% degli attuali collezionisti di macchine importanti si rivolgesse al mercato degli orologi da collezione per veder crescere in maniera vertiginosa e rapida i prezzi delle quotazioni. Chiaramente, poi, non si può non tenere conto del ruolo svolto dalle case d’asta. Alcuni sostengono che il mercato delle case d’asta non costituisca un reale indice del mercato. Sicuramente c’è la possibilità che alcune aste non rispecchino il reale andamento dei prezzi, ma è evidente a tutti come una piattaforma in grado di aggregare nello stesso giorno privati e commercianti da tutto il mondo di fronte allo stesso oggetto, abbia un potenziale veramente alto per ottenere il massimo in termini di profitto. Inoltre in asta non esiste la possibilità di permutare gli oggetti, quindi tutti coloro che acquistano o vendono tramite casa d’asta possono solo pagare o ricevere denaro e questa è la miglior garanzia di trasparenza. Infine dobbiamo avere degli oggetti da offrire sul mercato quindi è necessario lavorare sulla loro reperibilità. In Antiquorum, grazie ai molti Valuation Day organizzati in tutto il mondo, riusciamo a reperire oggetti con particolari caratteristiche anche se è sempre più difficile trovare oggetti mai visti prima ed aumentano le richieste di valutazione di oggetti non particolarmente interessanti per le aste. Fortunatamente, coloro che hanno ereditato orologi non esitano a contattarci per chiedere una valutazione, che spesso li sorprende in modo positivo!” aggiunge sorridendo Varesi. Concludendo, quindi, qual è il momento di acquistare o vendere? “Non esiste una risposta univoca. Ci sono orologi che hanno raggiunto una valutazione tale da far considerare di vendere, ma ce ne sono altri in procinto di veder decollare i prezzi. Il consiglio migliore è di acquistare sempre oggetti che piacciano e diano soddisfazione; normalmente sono gli acquisti fatti col cuore che, a medio/lungo termine, ripagano da un punto di vista economico...”

“One of the main (wrong) beliefs of watch owners (not fans) is that any watch is a collectible item as long as it is more than twenty years old”, Giovanni Varesi reveals, “and although insiders know it is not, for those who have inherited a watch, possibly a pocket watch, which is over 100 years old, it seems obvious that a timepiece is a “collector’s item”, regardless its characteristics. Another (wrong) belief is that the value of an item is given by the metal it is made of, or by the featuring of precious stones, even though those who work in the watch industry know that the weight of a noble metal or the presence of gemstones do not influence its evaluation, as long as it is not a jewel watch with special aesthetic connotations”, adds Varesi. So, which are the features that turn a watch into a collector’s item? “They are many. Surely its desirability.

And with ‘desirability’ I mean the ratio between the number of items produced and the number of persons who would and could buy them. A clear example is provided by Rolex, as it often happens. A Submariner Green Bezel, although it has been produced in a large number of specimens and is not a vintage watch, in the strict sense of the term, it is rapidly increasing in value. On the other hand, there are prestigious complicated watches by different brands, which are produced in 25 numbered copies, that are sold at a fraction of its original cost.

This depends on the more or less favourable ratio among price, availability and desirability. Another essential feature is quality. And also outfit. I mean: talking about collectible watches, their warranty and their original kit are a real plus for all watches in general, but, in the event of vintage watches, an original warranty appears to be an exception to the rule that can make their value increase by 30-40%.

Quality, instead, is a necessary condition for all the watches available on the market in a regular number, and it becomes a huge plus value in rare items, and moves to the background only in unique objects or which appear on the market for the first time.

Another feature that makes a difference is the origin.

Whether it is an important watch in itself or it is a specimen of a lesser-known brand, a watch which has belonged to someone famous has an incredible OM MAGAZINE

plus value, and the result in an international auction can range from interesting to exceptional, or it can even set a new world record for that specific reference. Let’s think about the Omega Constellation which belonged to Elvis Presley. In view of a market value of approximately CHF 2,000-2,500, it was sold by Antiquorum in April 2016 for $ 37,500. It is clear that the difference between the watch value and the hammer price is given by the fact that it was owned by a legend like Elvis Presley”, Varesi explains, and adds “These are all endogenous variables of an item, but there are also some exogenous ones. For example, an important factor is the number of new possible investors/collectors who get close to a rather ‘new’ safe haven. In fact, it is no coincidence that many people in the world of finance have come close to watches with speculative purposes, in recent years.

We are not talking about negative speculation, because there are no funds for the purchase of vintage watches. The general consideration among experts is that high-quality vintage watch is just at the beginning of its price rising. One more phenomenon is assets.

Anyone who has an idea of the assets spent in vintage cars, is well aware that if 10% of current collectors of significant cars turned to the market of collectible watches, it would be enough to see prices grow rapidly. Then, obviously, we cannot ignore the role of auction houses. Some argue that the market of auction houses is not a real index of the market.

Surely, there is a possibility that some auctions do not reflect the real price trend. But everyone can obviously understand that a platform, which can summon private citizens and traders from all over the world in front of an object in the same day, has a very high potential to get the most in terms of profit. Also, in auctions there is no possibility to exchange items, so anyone buying or selling through auction houses may only have to pay or receive money, and this is the best guarantee of transparency. Lastly, you must own the items to be offered on the market, and then you need to work on their availability. a Dino ha rappresentato due importanti novità assolute per Ferrari. Non solo è stata la prima auto di produzione di Maranello a vantare un motore V-6, ma anche la prima auto prodotta da Ferrari a motore centrale-posteriore. Sebbene la Dino non portasse alcun badge Ferrari (salvo per il cartellino dati), è stata senza dubbio molto cara al cuore di Enzo, trattandosi di un tributo allo scomparso figlio Alfredo - “Dino” - come era chiamato in famiglia. Molti considerano la Dino una delle più grandi vetture Ferrari, non solo per il suo aspetto, ma anche per la meravigliosa esperienza di guida fornita.

La progettazione della carrozzeria di questa iconoica vettura porta la firma di Pininfarina. Tra il 1969 ed il 1974 furono costruiti 3260 esemplari. La Ferrari Dino è stata la prima auto prodotta da Ferrari con un motore a 6 cilindri invece di 12. La 246 GTS è alimentata da un motore a 2,4 litri e 6 cilindri con disposizione a V per 192 CV. La Ferrari Dino ha avuto un grande successo e molti artisti, come la cantante Cher e gli attori Tony Curtis e Robert Wagner, ne sono stati fortunati proprietari.

el precedente numero abbiamo descritto la differenza tra orologi meccanici a carica manuale e quelli a carica automatica. In realtà esiste un’ulteriore categoria che non abbiamo ancora menzionato, quella degli orologi al quarzo.

Ma prima di affrontare questo argomento, vorrei spiegarvi il principio generale di funzionamento di un orologio. Tutti gli orologi, sia meccanici che al quarzo, concettualmente funzionano nello stesso modo e, in linea generale, non sono altro che dei contatori, ovvero strumenti che “contano” oscillazioni. Un orologio a pendola, ad esempio, conta le oscillazioni del suo pendolo. Ad ogni oscillazione, una ruota dentata fa uno scatto in avanti (e quindi l’oscillazione viene “contata”) e di conseguenza, attraverso una serie di ingranaggi connessi tra loro, detti “rouage” o “ruotismo”, la lancetta dei secondi avanza. Ma, al di là della complessità meccanica, il concetto è semplice: le lancette avanzano ogni volta che il pendolo avrà compiuto un determinato

numero di oscillazioni. Negli orologi meccanici il funzionamento è lo stesso, solo che al posto del pendolo si usa un “bilanciere”, una ruota che oscilla alternatamente in entrambi i sensi grazie alla forza elastica di una molla a spirale collegata ad essa. Questo è il vero cuore dell’orologio, tecnicamente definito “organo regolatore” o “oscillatore”. Ovviamente più le oscillazioni sono costanti nel tempo, più l’orologio sarà preciso. E mentre negli orologi meccanici l’energia necessaria al loro funzionamento viene fornita dalla molla, in quelli al quarzo questa viene fornita da una batteria. In questo caso l’oscillatore è un cristallo di quarzo tagliato a forma di diapason che vibra se sollecitato da un campo elettrico. In un orologio al quarzo, quindi, vengono contate le vibrazioni del quarzo stesso e di conseguenza le lancette si muovono in avanti. Le vibrazioni di un orologio al quarzo hanno una frequenza molto più elevata di quella di un orologio meccanico, offrendo così una grande precisione a lungo termine. Ma, nonostante questa caratteristica, il fascino di un orologio meccanico resta di gran lunga superiore.

In our last issue, we described the difference between manual-winding and automatic-winding mechanical watches. Actually, there is one more category that we have not mentioned yet: quartz watches. But before going into this, I would like to explain the general principle of how watches operate. All watches, both mechanical and quartz, work the same way conceptually, and in general they are nothing but counters, or rather, they are tools that “count” oscillations. For example, a pendulum clock counts the oscillations of its pendulum. At each oscillation, a ratchet-wheel makes a step forward (and thus the oscillation is “counted”) and consequently the seconds hand moves forward, through a series of gears connected to each other, called “rouage” or “geartrain”. But, beyond mechanical complexity, the concept is simple: the hands move forward each time the pendulum takes a definite number of oscillations.

Mechanical watches work the same way, but the pendulum is replaced by a “balance”, a wheel that oscillates alternately in both directions thanks to the elastic force of a spiral spring connected to it. This is the true heart of the watch, technically defined

“regulating organ” or “oscillator”. Obviously, the more the oscillations are constant over time, the more a watch is precise. And while in mechanical watches the necessary energy is supplied by the spring, in quartz watches it is supplied by a battery. In this case, the oscillator is a quartz crystal cut in the shape of tuning fork which vibrates when it is stimulated by

Arthur Bloch an electric field. So, in a quartz watch, vibrations are counted by the quartz itself, and consequently the hands move forward. The vibration frequency of a quartz watch is much higher than that of a mechanical watch, thus providing a high precision in the long term. But, despite this, the charm of a mechanical watch is far superior.

o chiamavano “Joe lo Strimpellatore”. Era figlio di un diplomatico britannico e visse i primi 9 anni della sua vita sballottato in giro per il mondo. A diciott’anni fu convocato per il riconoscimento del cadavere del fratello suicida. Poi c’era Mick, che a soli 8 anni dovette affrontare il divorzio dei genitori, rimanendo a lungo in affidamento ad una bambinaia. E poi c’era Paul, nato nel quartiere giamaicano di Brixton e cresciuto in strada tra guerriglie urbane e scontri fra gang. Infine c’era “Topper”, figlio di un preside scolastico, costretto costantemente a comportarsi da ribelle per dimostrare ai compagni di non godere di privilegi disciplinari legati alla posizione del papà.

Quattro personaggi apparentemente slegati tra loro che un giorno il destino decise di far incontrare affinché diventassero la band più esplosiva e innovativa del movimento punk: i Clash.

Dei 10 anni di carriera dei Clash ci sarebbe da raccontare un universo intero, ma ciò che fu davvero di rilievo furono le numerose novità che portarono all’interno della musica punk. Le loro canzoni ospitano le influenze musicali più disparate, dal reggae allo ska, raggiungendo un sound globale e abbracciando testi impegnati e ad alto contenuto politico.

Furono la rivoluzione nella rivoluzione. E dal loro brano “Revolution Rock”, il rock rivoluzionario, ma anche traducibile come ‘la pietra rivoluzionaria’, il passaggio all’innovativo Hublot Big Bang Unico Sapphire è questione di un attimo.

Un orologio unico di nome e di fatto. Lunetta, cassa, fondello e vetri sono interamente realizzati nel materiale più duro e resistente disponibile in orologeria: lo zaffiro, una pietra con durezza di 9 punti su 10 in base alla Scala di Mohs. Ciò lascia immaginare le difficoltà di lavorazione e le centinaia di ore necessarie alla sua fabbricazione. Presentato a Baselworld 2016, questo orologio, prodotto in serie limitata di 500 esemplari, apre una nuova era nel mondo dell’orologeria e nell’utilizzo dello zaffiro. They called him “Joe Strummer”. He was the son of a British diplomat and he spent his first nine years of life moving from pillar to post. At the age of eighteen he was summoned for the recognition of his suicide brother’s corpse. Then there was Mick, who was only eight years old when he had to deal with his parents’ divorce, staying in foster care of a nurse for a long time. And then there was Paul, born in the Jamaican district of Brixton and grown up on the streets among urban fighting and gang clashes. Lastly, there was “Topper”, the son of a school headmaster, constantly forced to behave like a rebel to show his school mates he did not benefit any corrective privilege from his dad’s position. Four people who were apparently unrelated to each other, and whom one day their fate wanted them to meet in order to become the most explosive and innovative band of the punk movement: The Clash. There is a whole universe to tell about the 10-year career of The Clash, but what was really important were the many innovations they brought into punk music. Their songs are home to the most diverse musical influences, from reggae to ska, reaching a global sound and embracing social issue lyrics with high political content. They were a revolution within the revolution. And going from their song “Revolution Rock” to the pioneering Hublot Big Bang Unico Sapphire takes just one moment.

A unique watch, by name and by deed. Bezel, case, caseback and crystals are entirely made from the watch industry’s hardest and more resistant material: sapphire, a stone with 9/10 points in the Mohs scale.

This helps understand the difficulty in working it and the hundreds of production hours required.

Il suo primo orologio ultrasottile venne lanciato a BaselWorld nel 1957: si trattava di un Altiplano con movimento 9P a carica manuale da 2 mm, progettato da Valentin Piaget, e nonostante siano trascorsi 60 anni dal debutto del Piaget Altiplano, la collezione sembra avere ancora oggi una grande rilevanza, grazie al suo fascino sempreverde e alle sue linee classiche e definite. Per celebrare il 60° anniversario dell’Altiplano, Piaget ha presentato al SIHH 2017 due nuovi modelli della collezione. Sia il modello a carica manuale che quello a carica automatica riportano la tipica croce del marchio sul quadrante, che apparve per la prima volta sui modelli calibro 9P e 12P. «In effetti abbiamo deciso di utilizzare scritte e simboli del movimento originale.

Ad esempio, sul quadrante si può leggere “Piaget Automatic”, che era una scritta tipica utilizzata in passato e che ormai non utilizziamo più.» afferma Chabi Nouri, recentemente nominata Amministratore Delegato della Maison. «Ciò che trovo particolarmente interessante è che stiamo celebrando sicuramente un’icona, l’Altiplano, ma allo stesso tempo celebriamo anche la manifattura orologiera di Piaget. Abbiamo presentato l’anello Possession nel 1990 che rovesciò totalmente i canoni della gioielleria perché era un anello progettato per essere “ruotato”. As with the Royal Oak and to a lesser extent the Nautilus, the decision to develop the “Laureato” - name taken from the 1967 Dustin Hoffman movie - came at the request of the Italian market, who reported a need for a contemporary, luxury sports watch targeted to a younger audience. “Since it was first thought to satisfy the Italian market, the watch was designed by an Italian architect and its octagonal bezel, inspired by the footprint of Florence’s famous dome, was a hit from the start and by the latter part of the decade, had become GP’s best-seller!” states Antonio Calce, CEO of the brand. “The Laureato is meant to represent a milestone for the company and for the market as well” explains Calce “in 1969 the Swiss watch industry was revolutionized by the introduction of quartz movement. To fit the market’s need, the first Laureato, released in 1975, was a quartz and not only was the first quartz movement made entirely in-house by Girard-Perregaux, but it also determined the frequency standard 32,768 Hz that is still used today. The SIHH 2017 release, instead, is powered by the in-house GP1800 water resistant to 10 atm to stress its nature of steel sports watch thought for a daily use. The last five or six years have been characterized by a tendency to look back, to revive, to pay homage for today’s luxury sports watch market. Some very well reputed companies turned to Gerald Genta. He designed the Royal Oak in 1972, the Nautilus in 1976 and the Ingenieur in 1977. The same trend inspired the Vacheron Constantin 222 in 1977. So we can easily think of half a dozen watches that fit that particular style.

The Laureato was born in 1975 yet had several key distinctions.

Firstly the company chose to look to its own designers, then the name - as a suggestion by the Italian distributor - was not a reference to anything sporty or nautical. Girard-Perregaux, unlike its rivals, opted for a quartz movement inside a watch featuring a polished gold octagonal bezel, a gold stripe across the bracelet and a matte two-tone steel case. The Laureato is very much a ’70s design and no brand whatsover has a monopoly on the design of those years�.

fortification A sense of history and story has always affected the enjoyment of wine and there are no better stories that those which surround fortified wines

he cos’è un vino liquoroso? È un vino a cui è stato aggiunto dell’alcool, più comunemente un brandy. In passato, questi vini venivano fortificati per stabilizzarli solitamente perché avebbero intrapreso viaggi lunghi per essere portati a destinazione, in condizioni incerte. La fortificazione, inoltre, ne aumenta la gradazione alcolica e anche l’aroma. La fortificazione può avvenire in due modi: nel primo caso viene effettuata prima che la fermentazione sia completa fermandone quindi il processo e lasciando inalterata la naturale dolcezza, nel secondo caso, invece, dopo che la fermentazione ha avuto luogo, dando origine a vini generalmente più secchi. Tra i vini fortificati non possiamo non citare i Porto, ad esempio, che provengono dalla famosa Valle del Douro in Portogallo e devono il loro nome, già dal XVII secolo, alla città di Porto. La zona è una delle denominazioni più antiche del mondo, e risale al 1756. Si passa dai nocciolati Tawnies ai fruttati Rubies ai sapori più robusti di uvetta e cioccolato aromatizzato per le bottiglie d’annata. I Porto sono, attualmente, tra i vini più pregiati e valorizzati economicamente nel mercato. Imperdibili il Niepoort LBV Ramos Pinto, o il Quinta do Bom Retiro 20 Year Old Tawny. Ricco e profondo. Bevibile ora o da tenere in cantina per i prossimi 20 anni. Gli Sherry invece, sono vini fortificati che provengono dalla zona di Jerez in Spagna.

Benchè governata dai Mori per secoli, la

coltivazione dei vitigni fu consentita, giacchè forniva uvetta nutriente per le truppe. La fortificazione dello Sherry avviene dopo la fermentazione quindi molti sono asciutti e la dolcezza viene aggiunta solo in seguito. Vini di annate diverse sono mescolati e lasciati invecchiare in botti che vengono ruotate seguendo il sistema Solera. Ogni bottiglia, quindi, contiene una porzione di vino antichissimo, dandogli una ricchezza di sapore non duplicabile. Dai Finos, secchi e pallidi, agli Olorosos, ricchi e scuri che possono essere sia dolci che secchi, gli Sherry offrono profili di sapore intensi e drammatici da accompagnare sia con gli antipasti che con un dessert ricco o un sigaro. Da provare il Goya en Rama con un retrogusto di mandorla e noce o il Pedro Ximenez Triana Hidalgo, uno degli Sherry più dolci al mondo, con un sapore intenso di uva passa e melassa. Non resta, quindi, che indulgere nella storia dei vini liquorosi e, soprattutto, goderne!

DOURO VALLEY IN PORTUGAL

What is a fortified wine? It is a wine that has had an alcohol added usually in the form of a brandy.

In the day, these wines were fortified to stabilize them usually because they would be travelling long distances in uncertain conditions. This fortification increases the alcohol of the wine and their flavor profiles. Fortification can happen one of two ways; before fermentation is complete thereby stopping the process and leaving residual sugars and sweetness, or after fermentation leaving generally drier wines with sweetness added. Ports, for example, are from the famed Douro Valley in Portugal and received their name in the 17th Century from the seaport city of Porto. The area is one of the oldest appellations in the world dating back to 1756. From nutty Tawnies to richly fruity Rubies to robust raisin and chocolate flavored Late Bottle Vintages, Ports are some of the greatest values in the market today.

Drinkable now or cellar for up to 20 years. Sherries come from the Jerez area of Spain. Reigned by the Moors for centuries, the vines were allowed to thrive based on the fact they provided nutritious raisins for the troops. Sherry undergoes fortification after fermentation and therefore many are dry. Sweetness is added afterwards. Wines from different vintages are blended and left to age in barrels that are rotated in the Solera system. Every bottle contains a portion of very old wine giving it a richness of flavor unduplicated. From Finos that are dry and pale to Olorosos that are both rich and dark and can either be sweet or dry, Sherries offer dramatic flavor profiles that can be offered before dinner with appetizers or afterward with a rich dessert or cigar.

Look for Goya en Rama with its almond and walnut flavors or the Pedro Ximenez Triana Hidalgo.

This Sherry is one of the sweetest in the world with plenty of raisin and molasses on the palate. Indulge in the history of fortified wines and enjoy!

Dopo tanta attesa, il mondiale rally 2017 ha riaperto il sipario con l’affascinante tappa Montecarlo, giunta alla 85° edizione.

Sébastien Ogier, il pilota campione del mondo, ricomincia così come aveva concluso: vincendo. Per Ogier si tratta della quinta vittoria in carriera nel Principato, quarta consecutiva; il formidabile pilota transalpino ha avuto la strada spianata verso il primo successo con la casa dell’ovale blu dopo l’uscita di scena del belga Thierry Neuville. Il francese della Ford ha controllato agevolmente, nella power stage conclusiva, il vantaggio di tre minuti accumulato in precedenza chiudendo davanti al finlandese Jari-Matti Latvala su Toyota ed al compagno di marca, l’estone Ott Tanak. Per quanto riguarda i nostri colori, Andrea Crugnola su Ford Fiesta R5, 18°, è stato il primo degli italiani. Luca Panzani ha confermato le sue qualità nel ruolo di ufficiale Renault, mentre per Giandomenico Basso, campione italiano in carica, e per il due volte Campione del Mondo WRC3 e Junior 2016, Simone Tempestini, il Rally di Montecarlo è stato avaro di soddisfazioni. Un rally magico, lussuoso a cui ha fatto, come sempre, cornice il bellissimo Casinò di Montecarlo.

According to the press and the automotive specialists there are millions of vintage cars in the world. This includes all cars that are more than thirty years old. And the number is rapidly increasing. Exact figures, as to how many vintage models exist, is difficult because many of them are unregistered. These are unlicensed cars that stand in people’s garages since years. The vintage car industry is becoming a huge economical factor.

Vintage car enthusiasts are by no means anywhere. You can drive your way through the seasons via fairs, rallies and vintage get-togethers and discover this hobby has opportunities for every kind of people and is just a matter of passion. Many have tried, but soul is one of those things that you just can’t define. Some might argue that a car cannot have soul. No beating heart, no emotion, no feelings. But sometimes it can be slightly different, cars are a bit temperamental and need constant attention. It’s exciting, wildly brilliant to love them.

Cars with soul have definitely that unquantifiable something.

The enchantment and popularity of classic cars stays for some indefinable quality known only as soul. We know what an old car perfume smells like. What reminds us when we are driving them. Its Collections Centre, featuring 250 cars, opened in Gaydon, Warwickshire, and the museum was transformed, including new zones such as royal cars, motorsport and vehicles from film and television. The Centre’s cars are from the reserve collections of the Heritage Trust and Jaguar Heritage Trust. The British Motor Museum is enabling visitors to learn more about the past, present and future of the British motor industry, its technology and its people. The purpose of the Collections Center is to allow the public to access all the cars for the first time. It gives visitors a ‘behind the scenes’ insight, and includes the chance to see restoration work underway in the workshop. From its earliest days the British motor industry has been a vital part of the economy and it is yet an important hub for automotive creativity today. The Museum, indeed, explains the story of the birth, decline and rebirth of the motor industry and the cars it produced, as well as celebrating the skills and creativity of the people who designed and built them. Take a walk in Warwickshire to smell the perfume of those astonishing vintage classic cars.

Avere delle stime precise di quanti modelli vintage esistano è difficile in quanto molte non sono neanche immatricolate e sostano nei garage dei loro proprietari da anni. L’industria delle vetture vintage sta assumendo un valore economico di rilievo. Gli amanti delle auto d’epoca si trovano ovunque. Basta partecipare a fiere, rally e raduni annuali per scoprire che questo hobby offre opportunità ad ogni tipo di individuo e che non è altro che una questione di passione. Molti hanno provato a darne una definizione, ma l’anima è una di quelle cose che non si possono definire. Alcuni potrebbero sostenere che le macchine non abbiano un’anima. Come quest’ultima, la R8 Spyder viene fornita di serie con un motore

V-10 e pesa meno rispetto alla precedente vettura grazie alla nuova piattaforma Audi Space Frame. La capote elettrica in tessuto e l’affascinante sound del 10 cilindri aspirato alle vostre spalle sono gli appeal principali della R8 Spyder. Audi afferma che i rumori del vento e della strada all’interno della cabina di guida sono molto più bassi rispetto alla prima versione della R8 Spyder, anche se solo un test drive potrà confermarne la veridicità.

In tipico stile Audi, il design degli interni è logico e pragmatico ma sempre di lusso, con il display digitale dell’Audi Virtual Cockpit al centro. La potenza del motore 5.2 viene gestita grazie al cambio a doppia frizione a 7 marce e alla trazione integrale Quattro. Top-down motoring with a top tenor naturally aspirated V10 at your shoulder is the main appeal of the R8 Spyder. Audi claims road and wind noise inside the car are much lower than on the first-gen R8 Spyder, though a test drive is the only way to confirm veracity. In typical Audi fashion, interior design is logical and pragmatic yet luxurious, with Audi’s Virtual Cockpit digital display the centerpiece.Power from the 5.2-liter engine feeds into a 7-speed dual-clutch gearbox and Quattro all-wheel drive.

Acceleration to 60 mph takes less than 3.6 seconds, and 125 mph arrives in under 12. Top speed is 197 mph. Spyder production was limited, and will remain so. If you live in coastal Orange County south of Los Angeles, or perhaps South Beach, you might see another R8 Spyder now and then, but R8 Spyder will be a rare bird.

on i tanti artisti e meccanici in circolazione che costruiscono e modificano motociclette sia per uso personale che per il tempo libero dei loro clienti, diventa difficile passare al setaccio tutte le novità e trovare quella fabbricazione davvero speciale che risulti affine al nostro stile particolare e alla nostra estetica preferita. Le moto concept di tanto in tanto rientrano in questa categoria; questa moto in particolare, sia per la sua estetica simil-virtuale, sia perchè sembra divertente da guidare. Progettata da Artem Smirnov e Vladimir Panchenko, due designers che si ispirano all’approccio giapponese (da qui “Samurai”), questa moto segue i principi di semplicità e consapevolezza spaziale per cui i brand giapponesi sono oggi noti. A loro volta, hanno cercato di trasferire questi principi al mondo delle moto, creando una concept che segue la tradizione giapponese, rendendola allo stesso tempo adatta al futuro. Un design dal profilo elegante e minimalista, funzioni personalizzabili, e una struttura in fibra di carbonio, fanno di questa moto una valida concorrente per i piloti del futuro. Nonostante sia improbabile che questa grande moto d’ispirazione giapponese entri mai in produzione, siamo entusiasti nel vedere ciò che questi due designers visionari abbiano messo in gioco nel settore motociclistico per gli anni a venire.

ith so many artists and mechanics out there building and modifying motorcycles either personal use or for their client’s leisure, it gets difficult to sift through all the noise and find that special build that resonates with our particular style and preferred aesthetic. Concept motorcycles occasionally fall in this lot, this motorbike in particular, due to both its VR-like aesthetic and the fact that it looks like one heck of a fun ride. Designed by Artem Smirnov and Vladimir Panchenko, two individuals who look towards the Japanese approach for design influence (hence the reason we crowned this thing the “Samurai”), this motorcycle follows the principles of simplicity and spatial awareness Japanese brands are known for today. In turn, they looked to transfer these principles into the world of motorcycles, creating a concept that follows Japanese tradition while making it suitable for the future. A sleek profile, minimalist design, customizable features, and what looks to be a carbon fiber build, all make this ride a viable contender for future riders. And while the likeliness this Motorbike from Great Japan ever makes it into production may not be likely, we’re still excited to see what these two visionaries have for the industry in the coming years.
