Zhang Zhang Elle donne tout pour la musique Music is her passion
Her life could be the basis for a children’s fairy-tale. Once upon a time… young Zhang Zhang lived with her musician parents in Beijing. In the 1970s, any performer who opposed Madame Mao would go straight to prison. With the awakening of China, in 1981, the family emigrated first to Thailand and then to Canada. However, they had to leave behind Leo, the youngest child. Luckily the story had a happy ending. Leo was at last able to join his parents and sister, who was becoming a well-known violinist. Her mentor, Sergiu Luca, encouraged her to study at Rice University in Texas, where she obtained a Masters Degree. One day in 2000, she spotted an advertisement: the Monte Carlo Philharmonic Orchestra was recruiting 6 violinists. She auditioned and since then has belonged to one of the world’s finest orchestras. Aware of the opportunities that music had given her, Zhang Zhang felt that it was her turn to play an active role and to help the less fortunate. She formed her own non-profit organisation, ZhangoMusiq, in 2007 and two music groups, the Monaco String Quartet and the Zhang Zhang Band. The money collected during charity concerts is donated to non-profit organisations fighting for a variety of causes. When her very busy timetable allows, the performer is also involved in public speaking. Recently she took to the platform at TEDx Cannes (part of an international programme of conferences designed to spread ideas which are worth sharing) of which the Majestic Barrière Hotel was partner. Sa vie pourrait servir de trame à un conte pour enfants. Il était une fois… Zhang Zhang petite Pékinoise née de parents musiciens. Dans les années 70, être artiste et s’opposer à Madame Mao conduit droit en prison. Avec l’éveil de la Chine, en 1981, la famille émigre en Thaïlande d’abord, au Canada ensuite. Mais elle doit « abandonner » Léo, le plus jeune fils. L’aventure connaîtra une fin heureuse. Léo rejoint enfin ses parents et sa sœur, qui devient une violoniste de renom. Son mentor, Sergiu Luca, l’a incitée à poursuivre des études à la Rice University du Texas ; elle y obtiendra un Masters Degree. Un jour de 2000, elle lit une annonce : l’Orchestre Philharmonique de Monte-Carlo recrute 6 violonistes. Elle passe l’audition et, depuis, fait partie de l’un des meilleurs ensembles du monde. Consciente que la musique lui a offert des opportunités, Zhang Zhang veut, à son tour, jouer un rôle actif et aider les moins favorisés. Elle a créé son association, « ZhangoMusiq », en 2007 et deux groupes de musique, « Monaco String Quartet » et « Zhang Zhang Band ». L’argent récolté lors de concerts caritatifs est reversé à des associations menant des combats variés. Lorsque son emploi du temps très chargé lui en laisse le loisir, l’artiste prend également la parole en public ; comme récemment, lors du TEDx Cannes (cycle international de conférences destinées à diffuser des idées qui valent la peine d’être partagées), et dont l’Hôtel Majestic Barrière était partenaire.
