DESOTO NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE (BLAIR)

Located along the banks of the Missouri River in Iowa and Nebraska, DeSoto National Wildlife Refuge was formed in 1960 when an Army Corps of Engineers channelization project shifted the main river channel westward. The refuge grounds are open daily from sunrise to sunset. The visitor center is open daily from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., except on certain federal holidays. The Bertrand steamboat museum collection is on display inside the visitor center.

DeSoto Lake is open for ice fishing from early January through late February and for open-water fishing from mid-April through late September. Peak viewing of the snow goose migration occurs in mid-November.

ABOUT STANTON COUNTY

Why visit Stanton County? If you ask someone from Stanton where their town is located, a common answer is, “10 miles from Norfolk.” Norfolk, a more recognizable “older brother” of Stanton that holds the movie theater and shopping mall, is often the starting-off point. Norfolk is the “somewhere.” If you ask another Stanton resident where the town is located, you might hear something about the “middle of nowhere.” Stanton is surrounded by rolling fields and cattle-filled pastures. There are no traffic jams. The beautiful tree-filled golf course is a welcome sight to anyone who wants to play around. Winding gravel roads will take you to the serene fishing and camping spot of Maskenthine Lake. And when the day is done, the stars will be clearly seen at night. Yes, Stanton is indeed “Nestled between Somewhere and Nowhere,” which is not only the town’s new slogan but also the reason you should stop by for a visit.
