Director’s Note
When I became a literature teacher, I found this play in our textbook and thought it would be a fun script to teach teenagers around Christmas time. I was wrong. It wasn’t fun; it was terribly sad, frightening, and more thought provoking than I had ever imagined. It was life changing. I was familiar with the story because of Mickey Mouse and the Muppets, but I had never really sat with the plot and realized what Charles Dickens was doing with his masterpiece. Dickens was teaching us empathy, charity, sympathy, kindness, and to take responsibility for our own actions. In simplicity, the theme of this show is that there is no greater gift than our own ability to help others. It is up to us whether or not we open up that gift and share it with the world. We might even learn something in doing so.
The novella and this carefully adapted script are meant to allow us to suspend the reality and restrictions of our everyday outward lives, and uncomfortably look inward to our own souls to evaluate how we treat others through the lessons Scrooge learns. This was the topic of the final essay at the end of the assessment of this unit, and I always received the most thoughtful and honest answers. This play helped make me a good teacher, which is why I picked it, and I am grateful for the lessons it has taught me over the years.
I am grateful to Ms. Pozderac and Ms. Harrison for trusting me and giving me this opportunity. I am grateful for the best production team out there, and I am grateful for this beautiful cast and crew who are truly and completely A Christmas Carol. I believe in you, and I am so proud of each and every one of you. I am grateful to Our Lady of Good Counsel High School for not only giving us the opportunity to bring the art of theatre to our school and community, but for instilling in me the love of theatre when I went here, as the students say, WAY back in the 1900s. I want to especially thank and dedicate this show to Mr. Dennis Essig, GCTC’s director for many years, for believing in me when I was a student. You are loved by so many, you made a difference, and you are missed.
