A Message from the CEO

Brethren, Ladies and Families,

I hope this communication finds you all well as we enter the spring of a new year. Our Ohio Masonic Communities have been on a journey to continue to reposition ourselves for the future ensuring we are able to meet the needs of our fraternity and the communities we serve.

I would like to thank Most Worshipful Brother William M. Carter III, and Lady Zoe for their contributions to the work of our Ohio Masonic Communities through our foundation.

We have finished a complete repositioning of our Western Reserve Masonic Community, refreshed our Browning Masonic Community, and are now in the planning phase of the repositioning of our Springfield Masonic Community. The repositioning work we are undergoing allows us to pivot our offerings and services very quickly to meet the needs of those we serve. These projects allow for a more inviting and spacious environment for us to continue to provide the high-quality care we are known for in all levels of service.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank Brother Anthony Berardi for his hard work and dedication to the many lives he touched while serving as our President and Administrator of our Springfield Masonic Community. His contributions were countless and the outcomes he and his team produced are nationally recognized. Tony relocated to be closer to loved ones in his hometown.

In March, we welcomed Annette Turner as the new President and Administrator at Springfield Masonic Community. We’re excited to have her on the team and grateful for the passion she brings from the industry and to our community.

It is an honor to serve our fraternity and a blessing to be a part of all the lives we are so blessed to care for. It is a privilege to be a part of creating an environment where residents can live their best lives.

While traditions are important, it’s also important that we try new things.

When community members have an idea for something they want to try, our team finds a way to make it happen.

It is my hope you are all well and ready to enjoy the warmer weather.

Fraternally,

Scott Buchanan CEO, The Ohio Masonic Communities

A Message from The Grand Secretary

Brethren and Friends all,

As you read the Beacon, I hope you are enjoying a beautiful spring day wherever you are. I’m glad to see the snow and cold weather behind us. I must say it seemed to go by quickly this winter, and we at the Grand Lodge Office have been busy. Don’t forget to check in on your friends and neighbors.

Freemasons living our tenets reap the rewards of their efforts. With the greatest of these being Relief, it’s the perfect time of year to reflect on our Fraternal legacy as Masons responsible for assuring the future of our great Fraternity. The Brotherhood we share, the philanthropies we support, and the alliances we build in our communities all depend on our vision, leadership, and financial support.

The Grand Lodge of Ohio Charitable Foundation was established for Masons to help Masons, and their families and neighbors, in their time of need. Our deepest gratitude goes to those who had the vision to create this tool for Ohio Freemasonry to proudly support. There are five separate funds for you to consider when designating your giving to The Grand Lodge of Ohio Charitable Foundation:

“Relief” – the Charitable Foundation Relief Fund was the initial vision our forefathers had when creating the fund to offer aid. Continue our tradition of providing relief to our Brethren and their families and neighbors. It’s a great place to consider when making your charitable donations each year.

“Scholarship” – thank you to our Masonic License Plate program supporters. Because of you, the Grand Lodge Charitable Foundation Scholarship Fund has received more than $33,200.00 this Masonic year. We are on track to receive more than $60,000 again this year. These funds are applied directly to the Scholarship Program for high school scholarship recipients around the state.

"Veterans and First Responders” – this fund continues to grow since its inception, thanks to your support. Initiatives are underway to provide aid where needed to thank our veterans and first responders for their dedication to serve and protect.

“Museum and Library” – this fund is used to maintain and preserve our history as well as provide resources to share with our membership and community alike.

“Masonic Model Student Assistance Program” – this fund supports training around the state for both students and teachers. This year, we have had five programs, in three communities in Ohio, serving more than 400 students and teachers. Contact the Grand Lodge Office for your school to host an MMSAP workshop.

For more information on any of these Charitable Foundation efforts, go to Freemason.com/Charities

In addition to the Grand Lodge Charitable Foundation, many Lodges connect with their communities through local charities. Hospice, community kitchens, Special Olympics, and backpack programs, just to name a few. What charity does your Lodge embrace?

It’s an honor to serve the Grand Lodge of Ohio. The office staff is committed to serving you, so please call on us if we can be of any assistance.

It's a Great Day for Freemasonry!

Calling All Volunteers!

At The Ohio Masonic Communities Foundation (OMCF), we are reminded daily of the impact that even the smallest act of kindness can have. Volunteers help bring joy, comfort, and a true sense of community to those we serve.

We are proud to recognize the amazing work of our volunteer-led auxiliaries, SPRIG (Special People Reinvesting in Good). The dedication and fundraising efforts of SPRIG I at Browning Masonic Community, SPRIG II at Western Reserve Masonic Community, and SPRIG VI at Springfield Masonic Community, and the generosity of supporters like you, directly supports lifeenriching projects. They are the heart of campus fundraisers. Our SPRIGs are always looking for welcoming smiles and helping hands.

As we continue our mission, we need your help!

OMCF coordinates several major fundraising events each year, and volunteers make a world of difference. Whether you are helping set up tables, welcoming guests, or lending your skills behind the scenes, your time helps ensure every event is a success. No matter your schedule, skills, or background, there is an opportunity for you to be involved!

WELCOME TO THE TEAM!

The Ohio Masonic Communities Foundation is excited to welcome Rachael Kemnic as our new Director of Development.

Rachael brings more than 20 years of experience in nonprofit fundraising and management, with a strong focus on building long-lasting relationships and advancing mission-driven initiatives. Most recently, she served as the Special Events and Donor Relations Manager for a children’s hospital in Chicago, Illinois, where she successfully led community engagement efforts and donor stewardship strategies.

A passionate advocate for meaningful impact, Rachael is eager to help enhance the lives of those we serve across Ohio. She is especially excited to connect with residents, donors, and community partners. Rachael is looking forward to learning more about the organization's rich Masonic heritage, especially as her father, Brother William Laskowski of Mount Olivet Lodge #226, has been a Mason for 42 years.

Outside of her professional work, Rachael enjoys running 5K races, attending live music events, and spending quality time with her family.

Please join us in warmly welcoming Rachael to the OMCF team. We are excited for the energy and expertise she brings to our mission, and we look forward to the great work ahead!

We are delighted to introduce Jaclyn Willman as The Ohio Masonic Communities Foundation’s newest Gift Officer!

Bringing with her a blend of compassion, strategic thinking, and community engagement, Jaclyn offers a wealth of expertise in donor relations, customer support leadership, and educational outreach. Her skill set will further support OMCF in our mission of helping our communities thrive.

Jaclyn especially looks forward to connecting with the Lodges, members, and their wonderful families:

“When my husband Jason Willman became a Mason, I was thrilled to join the Lodge and District in their philanthropic efforts. Through that experience, I have had the pleasure of meeting so many amazing Masons and ladies. I cannot help but be excited about this new chapter and opportunity to partner with others across Ohio to make a difference.”

Outside of work, Jaclyn enjoys spending time with her husband and supporting their children in all their endeavors from hockey and volleyball tournaments to art and music lessons.

Please join us in welcoming Jaclyn Willman to the OMCF team. We look forward to the positive impact she will make with the help of our incredible supporters.

A Trusted Partner

When Susan Bennett called the The Ohio Masonic Communities Resource Center, she was looking for a referral. She needed someone who could help them with some minor home repairs. Someone had been hired to fix the railing on their porch. However, once paid, the handyman left – never to return or be heard from again. It left the porch railing wobbly and only half finished, a stack of lumber, and a front door that wouldn’t lock.

Upon calling The Ohio Masonic Communities Resource Center, we were able to reach out to our volunteer chairman in the 21st Masonic District. Brother Rick Miller of William H. Hoover Lodge answered the call. Without hesitation, Rick said that Brother Christian Vallance with Vallance Construction was the man to help us out. Upon following up with Susan, she stated that she was so happy with the services provided. Their porch had been unsafe for over 2 years. Within 1 ½ days, the project was completed. Vallance Construction readjusted her storm door, down spouts, and fixed the railing. They cleaned up the old pile of lumber, and she’s now able to lock her door! Susan said she was tickled pink. They did beautiful work.

Susan’s husband, Fred, of Clinton Lodge, passed away earlier this spring. She said he would be so glad to know that the project had been finished. “He would have really loved it and enjoyed it.” Susan said she knows he’s looking down on it from heaven.

Masonic Volunteer Program Growth

The Masonic Volunteer Program has grown to now include the 22nd District! Grand Chaplain Kirk Miller and his wife, Pamela, have decided to take on growing the number of Masonic volunteers by starting an MVP Committee in their District. Kirk has been talking with MVP Coordinator, DeAnna Kinney, as well as Chairmen Joe Wicker and John Lovejoy, to learn more about the program, including the integral role it plays with OMCRC, allowing coordinators to better identify and assist Masons, their wives or widows, and Eastern Stars in need. Kirk will take on the role of Committee Chairman and we will be offering a training in the District for anyone who would like to be a part of this volunteer committee. Details will be shared with all Lodge secretaries once finalized. We thank Kirk for his willingness to partner with The Ohio Masonic Communities Resource Center and look forward to working with him and his group.

We also want to thank our newest MVP Committee Chairman, Earl Webster, for taking on the role of Chairman in the 20th District.

We would like to offer our appreciation to all our chairmen and volunteers around the state. You are an important part of the work that we do, whether you are making a referral of someone in need, helping with transportation, or making a friendly call or visit. If you feel called to help out by joining the MVP Committee in your District, please call DeAnna Kinney at (740) 262-1974 or e-mail dkinney@omcoh.org . A training can be done via phone, zoom, or in person. Our volunteers perform a myriad of small kindnesses every day. So, if you want to bring a little kindness to your world, offer kindness and compassion to another.

We are here to help with finding the clinical, financial, and social resources you need. We make referrals and coordinate services with appropriate local agencies and fraternal organizations, offer support, provide case management, and connect individuals to information and resources. This could be finding home health care, medical equipment, products and services that help you stay in your own home, connection to benefits like VA, ODJFS, and SSI, and so much more. We also offer financial assistance for Ohio Master Masons, their wife or widow, and Ohio Eastern Star members, who qualify. We are available to provide education and do presentations at Masonic meetings and events! Invite us to your Lodge or Chapter to speak or to set up a table with information.

HIGH QUALITY Customer Experience Awards and Careers in Aging

At The Ohio Masonic Communities, quality is important. We strive to provide the top quality in everything we do. As an organization, one of our strategic priorities is to be an organization of choice. We want our name to be synonymous with quality and for people to choose our campuses because they know the quality they receive is top notch.

One of the ways we ensure we’re always providing the best quality possible is feedback from our residents and their families. We partner with Activated Insights to measure the quality of everything from the care we provide to the meals we serve and the buildings themselves. Every month Activated Insights randomly chooses residents and family members in every level of care at each campus and asks them to complete a survey. We then get reports that show what we’re doing well and where we could improve.

We’re honored and excited to have been awarded the Activated Insights 2025 Customer Experience Award for assisted living and memory care at Browning Masonic Community; independent living, assisted living, and skilled nursing at Springfield Masonic Community; and independent living, assisted living, memory care, and skilled nursing at Western Reserve Masonic Community. These awards recognize us for being in the top 15% of providers nationwide.

It’s our team members, at every level and in every department, who make high quality care possible. They’ve chosen a career in aging where every day they care for others.

We’re here for residents to live their best lives and thrive as they age. But it doesn’t happen without dedicated employees who do everything from providing care to cooking and cleaning and more. It’s staff, with compassion and commitment, who can make a good senior living experience an excellent one. Our staff are some of the best of the best. Without them, we wouldn’t be recognized for the exceptional quality that our residents and the communities have come to expect.

Are you or someone you know looking for a job?

Springfield Masonic Community Receives

Clark State Diversity Champion Award

The 2025 Clark State Diversity Champion Award recognized leadership in diversity, honoring an individual or organization who has implemented innovative strategies that promote the development of skills to meet the needs of a multicultural society.

Springfield Masonic Community and Clark State College worked collaboratively to create an onsite training program for Certified Nursing Assistants (formerly State Tested Nursing Assistants) with an embedded ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) element. The program helps immigrants learn English while they are training to become a nursing assistant.

Brooke Herring, Chief Financial Officer of The Ohio Masonic Communities, shared, “We’re honored to receive the Diversity Champion Award. This recognition holds great meaning as we continue to cultivate an environment that values and celebrates diverse voices, backgrounds, and perspectives. Our partnership with Clark State College has opened new doors to support and educate nurses from all backgrounds, enriching our campus and the broader community. This award truly reflects the core of our mission, living our Masonic Values by serving as the trusted partner to help our communities thrive. When our local community flourishes, it strengthens our ability to help our incredible residents and dedicated staff thrive, as well.”

Annual Fish Fry

Residents at Springfield Masonic Community always look forward to the Annual Fish Fry. On Friday, April 11th, residents, their families, and employees gathered together and filled Festival Green Clubhouse to capacity. Everyone enjoyed the delicious menu of cod fish, french fries, coleslaw, sausages, baked beans, and cream puffs for dessert.

If you like a good raffle, this was the place to be. There were gift baskets and gift cards, plus a few other prizes. Everyone was excited to see who would win the prizes.

Rummage Sale a Success

Western Reserve Masonic Community (WRMC) residents came together to host their Annual Rummage Sale April 11th and 12th. A team of residents spent months collecting donated items from residents, employees, and community members. More than 35 residents worked to price items before the sale, assist shoppers, and manage check out during the sale.

The Community Center was filled to capacity – and brimming into the hallway – with furniture, holiday decorations, small kitchen appliances, artwork, and more. There was something there for everyone, and unsold items were donated to charities in Medina.

After months of collecting items and pricing them, it was time to get ready for the sale. Items were grouped together by type, such as lamps, creating an organized variety of sections to please all shoppers. The evening before, everything was set and ready for the sale.

Shoppers were excited to see the doors open Friday morning and there was an immediate crowd. Once shoppers found their cherished purchases, residents were ready to accept their payments. Residents worked in shifts, giving a large number of residents the opportunity to participate in this exciting annual event.

Rummage Sale Chairperson, Bob Hriso, shared, “Now that the Rummage Sale is over, residents are excited to use the proceeds to support activities of other resident committees at WRMC. The proceeds from this year’s rummage sale were over $3,000. Proceeds from the 2024 sale helped with the purchases of roses and benches to beautify our campus garden areas.” Planning is already underway for next year’s Annual Rummage Sale.
