Recently, Steve Petitjean, our Chief Operating Officer, and I were honored with an invite from Brother Richard (Dick) and Marjorie Snow to attend the 37th reunion of those who lived here as children. As you can imagine, we were not going to miss this opportunity, so we gladly accepted and attended the luncheon on September 21st. Present were Dick and Marjorie Snow; David and Linda Peron, their daughters Barbara Omer and Cathy Peron; and Don Fielder. Don, David, and Dick all lived at The Ohio Masonic Home in Springfield as children. The Snow’s and Peron’s are back with us here at Springfield Masonic Community and enjoying the lifestyle. It was an amazing and very educational experience to spend time with this group. We learned a great deal about the activities and environment that was provided, some of their many traditions, and reminisced about many others who lived here as children and came back to live out their adult lives who have since passed. It was truly a blessing to be able to seize the day and spend time with this amazing group of people.
I would like to share the “Children’s Blessing before Meals”. It is a great reminder of our past and, to some extent, our present. Our kind and Heavenly Father, From whom we all are fed, And thanks to Thee for our home and friends, And thanks for our daily bread. All we eat, and drink, and wear, Through our Heavenly Father’s care.

A Message from the Grand Master Embracing
Autumn: A Call to Reflect on Our Ideals and Philosophies
My Dear Brethren,
As the vibrant greens of summer give way to the rich, warm hues of autumn we are reminded of the cycles of nature and the inevitable passage of time. Just as the leaves transform and eventually fall to the ground, so too must we, as Freemasons, periodically shed our complacency and renew our commitment to the core ideals and philosophies that define our ancient and honorable institution.
Autumn, with its crisp air and harvest bounty, symbolizes a time of reflection and gratitude. It is a season that encourages us to pause and consider the fruits of our labor. Have we, in our Masonic journey, truly internalized the lessons of brotherly love, relief, and truth? Are we cultivating the virtues of integrity, humility, and wisdom within ourselves and our Lodges? Just as a farmer assesses his crops, so must we assess our adherence to the teachings and principles that have been passed down through the ages.
In the twilight of the year, nature prepares for the stillness of winter, a time of rest and introspection. Similarly, we should take this opportunity to delve deeper into the philosophical underpinnings of Freemasonry. Let us revisit the allegories and symbols that are the bedrock of our rituals, seeking new insights and understanding. The winding staircase, the blazing star, the working tools of the craft—all hold profound meanings that can illuminate our paths and guide us towards moral and spiritual enlightenment.
From the bottom of my heart, I thank YOU, the Brethren of Ohio, for electing me Grand Master and for the support you’ve so generously provided these past seven years. As we all undertake this new year of Masonic endeavor, I urge each of you to embrace the spirit of autumn. Reflect on your Masonic journey, renew your dedication to our timeless ideals, and engage with the philosophies that elevate our Fraternity above a mere social club. Let us ensure that the light of Freemasonry shines brightly, even as the days grow shorter. Together, let us prepare for the future with the wisdom gleaned from our past, nurturing the seeds of knowledge and virtue that will bloom anew in the seasons to come!

A Message from The Grand Secretary
Brethren and Friends all,
I hope this finds you all enjoying the beautiful changes of fall. I write this column as we prepare for the upcoming 215th Annual Communication of the Grand Lodge of Ohio held on October 18, 2024 at the Dayton Masonic Center. We anticipate a wonderful event full of fellowship with members from across the state and guests from neighboring jurisdictions. MWB Paul A. Weglage, Lady Karen, and their committee are well prepared for a great event in the beautiful Dayton Masonic Center.
The 2025 Membership Renewal Program is moving along very well. To keep year to year continuity, the Grand Lodge is sending the same message at the same time intervals to Lodge members. Members with an email address in Grand View received their email Renewal Notice in mid-August. Members not receiving an email notice, and any member with an outstanding dues balance, were sent a Membership Renewal Notice via First Class mail in mid-September. Through mid-October:
• 60% of our membership has already renewed their annual dues for 2025.
• 260 of 419 lodges received those payments via direct deposit or ACH from Grand Lodge.
• More than 8,000 members utilized the credit card payment option in Grand View.
Grand Lodge Member Service Awards for 50, 60, 65, 70, and 75 year members will be distributed to each District at the District Deputy Grand Master training session on October 19, 2024. All Lodges will be receiving theirs very soon for Awards Presentations before the end of the year.
Grand Secretary Zoom calls have been very helpful for both the office staff and Lodge Secretaries. We’ll continue the bi-monthly schedule at 10 am and 7 pm on the last Tuesdays of November, January, March, May, July, and September. I hope to see you at the next one, scheduled November 26, 2024. Watch for your Zoom link in your email.
The Ohio Village Lodge #10 at the Ohio History Connection in Columbus closed for the season at the end of August 2024. The Ohio Village will remain closed for the 2025 season in order to make renovations to the entire facility. All of the Ohio Village Lodge #10 property of the Grand Lodge and from Lodges across the state have been moved to a secure storage area during the temporary closure. I want to convey a special thank you to all of the Brethren who volunteered their time and muscle to assist with packing and moving all of the historical items. Watch for a grand reopening in the 2026 season.

First Impressions Matter!
Brother Grant Kessler, current Senior Warden of Reynoldsburg Lodge #340, believes that first impressions truly do matter!
In 2017, Grant’s sister was pregnant with her first baby and it was almost time for lift off! The family arrived at the hospital to be together to welcome their new niece into the world. Brother Kessler decided to welcome hi s new niece in the only way he knew how – in a suit, tie, and pocket square! At first, Grant’s younger sister laughed to which he responded, “Impressions matt er!”
This small gesture of classiness has garnered quite a bit of attention far and wide! Brother Kessler has been featured on ma ny different national news stations such as NBC, Fox, Buzzfeed, USA Today, GQ, and many more newspaper articles. In one interview, Grant told NBC affiliate WCMH-TV, “When Carter’s older, I wanted her to look back and look at those pictures of the day she was born and see the like, respect, and attention she was getting that day. I think me wearing the suit was a small part of that.”
Not only did this capture the news’ attention, but it also took the social media world by storm! In Grant’s sisters post, quoting him saying “First Impressions Matter” with the attached picture, there were over 458,000 like s and 152,000 retweets in just three days!!
Grant’s choice to “Be Legendary” and dress to impress has definitely made an impact on baby Carter’s life and will be a great memory they’ll get to share together the rest of their lives! If you’re ever in doubt, be overdressed for the occasion!

For the Love of the Game of Baseball
Baseball: the American pastime. Fans wait all winter for it. It comes in fresh and new with the spring flowers and goes out worn and tattered with the fall lea ves.
One can say the same about baseball equipment. Players, mostly young ones, get very excited when they get a new glove or bat. They play with it for hours every day. Then, when it is worn out, they toss it aside and wait gleefully for the next new one
What happens to that worn out glove or bat? Is it really too ol d for use? There are some kids in LaRomana, Dominican Republic that think not.
While on a cruise of the Caribbean in July 2023, Brother James “Rusty” Shope of Lucasville Lodge #465 saw a group of kids playing baseball. Being a coach and lover of the game, Rusty went over to the field to watch the kids play. The kids were playing hard, giving it their all just like any other group of young baseball players, but Rusty began to notice some things.
He noticed that their equipment was extremely worn and tattered . The bases were pieces of cardboard, the ball was brown and torn, their equipment was wel l beyond use. This concerned Rusty. Nevertheless, the kids were having the time of their lives.
Rusty began to talk to some of the locals and eventually was ab le to speak with the man in charge of the kids. They talked about the game and the condition of the equipment. Rusty asked the man for his contact information and told him that he would see if he could obtain some equipment and send it to him.
When he returned home, Rusty began thinking about how he could get equipment donated to send to the kids. Well, it didn’t take long before donations began to come in. I mean, Lucasville was home to Branch Rickey (raised in Lucasville Lodge) and sout hern Ohio loves its baseball. Rusty reached out to some other coaches and in a short time the y amassed enough gear to fill a cargo van. Over 400 pounds of gear in all. Bats, gloves, balls, bases, catchers gear, and more. All donated from local lovers of the game.
Well, that was the easy part. The hard part was getting the equipment to LaRomana. Rusty and one of his coaching friends began reaching out to local shippers and one thing led to another. A local business that ships its products all over the world agreed to ship the gear to the kids.
The gear made it to LaRomana and we’ll just let the photo of the kids tell you the rest.
Brethren and Friends,
It has been an incredible year filled with fun, laughter, and new events, and it is not over yet. However, we are busy planning for 2025 which you will see highlighted on the back page of this edition.
We thank once again our 2024 Grand Duke and Duchess, Ron and Elaine Connelly, for being outstanding role models for the foundation. We wish our 2025 Grand Duke and Duchess, Gary and Shirley Nicholson, the best of luck as they share the mission, vision, and values of The Ohio Masonic Communities.
We hope you enjoy this collage of photo’s recognizing some of the events that took place this year. We would love to see you in 2025 as we continue to create the resources that help our communities thrive.

Brothers Helping Brothers
Bobbi Schickler, SW Ohio Community Outreach Coordinator, was contacted by one of our District 2 volunteers asking for help with his parents. Bobbi spoke with Jean to assess what their needs were. They had just gotten a new ramp, and it was hard for her to push Rod up the ramp to the house. They needed a scooter or electric wheelchair. Bobbi reached out to several District 2 Masons and was able to locate a scooter that a Mason was willing to donate. She got the two in contact with one another, and within a few days Alex picked up the scooter for his dad. Thank you to the anonymous donor of the scooter – it is being put to good use.
At The Ohio Masonic Communities Resource Center we assess our clients’ unique needs making those connections that are needed. Whether that be back to Lodges, Districts, Chapters, local food banks, SNAP, VA, Area Agency on Aging, and many other resources in their communities. Please reach out to your local coordinator if you or someone you know needs assistance. We are here to help!
Watching After Our Own
George Tilden and Ron Nockengost have known each other for many years. As friends, coworkers, and, most importantly, Brothers of Adoniram-Joppa Lodge #517 in Akron. After Ron’s wife passed away, his health began to decline and he needed comfort and assistance. George stepped up to support his Brother in need, even becoming his power of attorney (POA).
Health issues, a hospitalization, and much needed rehabilitation led Ron to assisted living. The Ohio Masonic Communities Resource Center (OMCRC) and George provided well checks at home and supported Ron through the process as he sold his home and organized his personal belongings. Ron had a sense of peace knowing he wasn’t doing this alone. Through the resource center, we helped to make a referral to an assisted living facility where Ron is doing so well that his health and independence have improved and he is now in independent living and working in the campus store!
Questions about aging and services? We can help! Call us at (877) 881-1623.
Partnering with Lodges
Members of the Wilmington Lodge met with one of our Lodge widows and found she was in desperate need of a new front porch/deck. Her existing deck was dangerous and in desperate need of repair. The Lodge voted to provide the materials and Lodge members planned to build a deck.
Eight members of Wilmington Lodge #52 gathered on June 29, 2024 to build a new deck for her. The old deck was removed and hauled away. Jack Walker and Van Hewitt were the project leaders, drawing up the plans and procuring the necessary materials needed for the project. Other Lodge members working on the project included Ryan Winters, Logan Fields, Matt Walker, Tony Jordan, Keith Newton, and prospect Mike Walker.
Our Lodge members truly enjoyed the day of work, fun, and fellowship that the project brought for us. Even more gratifying was knowing that we helped one of our Lodge widows. We're looking forward to the next project.
It was a Great Day for Freemasonry in the Super 8th District and Wilmington Lodge #52! The Ohio Masonic Communities Resource Center can partner with Lodges to help clients and widows. If you know someone who could use assistance, please reach out to us!

Our Award Winning Campuses
Each year the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) provides ratings for every nursing home in the country. It’s designed to give everyone a way to compare facilities or communities and make sure they can choose the best quality care for themselves or a loved one.
Their rating system is complex, but it includes measuring health inspections, staffing, and overall quality during annual onsite visits. A star rating is awarded for each of the three categories and an overall star rating is awarded. An overall 5-star rating is awarded to the top 10% of skilled nursing care providers in each state.
The Ohio Masonic Communities is proud that Springfield Masonic Community and Western Reserve Masonic Community have both maintained 5-star ratings. This puts them among the best of the best and is recognition of the hard work and dedication of the teams at each campus. While Browning Masonic Community is not eligible for a star rating from CMS because they do not offer skilled nursing care, their team is also committed to providing 5-star quality the community depends on.
As part of this year’s rating, Springfield Masonic Community achieved a 5-star rating in all three categories (health inspections, staffing, and overall quality) in addition to their overall 5-star rating. This is nearly impossible to do, and there are only five other facilities in Ohio who have currently achieved this. Congratulations to Springfield Masonic Community for being in the top 1% of providers in the state and country!
In addition to their 5-star accolades, Springfield Masonic Community and Western Reserve Masonic Community received recognition from Newsweek for the quality of care provided by their Healthcare Centers. To assist older adults and their loved ones in considering care options, Newsweek and Statista partnered to rank America’s Best Nursing Homes of 2025. This year’s list recognizes 1,050 nursing homes out of 14, 858 analyzed nationwide. Both Healthcare Centers were ranked in the top 30 for Ohio facilities with 50-99 patients. In all, only 73 of Ohio’s 948 facilities were recognized. Congratulations to the teams at Springfield Masonic Community and Western Reserve Masonic Community on being recognized with this honor!

New Executive Director at Browning Masonic Community
In August, Browning Masonic Community welcomed a new Executive Director, ShaDonna Hadley. She has a bachelor's degree in healthcare administration and is a Licensed Nursing Home Administrator (LNHA). With over seven years of experience in healthcare, ShaDonna has managed several facilities, helping to pull them out of the trenches and ensure residents successfully lived in a safe and thriving environment. Prior to healthcare, ShaDonna worked in criminal justice, serving children and supporting families who needed assistance with custodial services.
“I always clung to the senior population as my great grandparents were integral in my life. When they became ill, it piqued my interest that they needed compassionate voices speaking up for them. I wanted to be my great grandparents’ voice and ensure they were heard. This trickled over to wanting to make sure I could impact several seniors. There can be a tendency for seniors to be dismissed or forgotten and I want to make sure they are able to age with respect, support, and grace.”
