A Message from the CEO

Brethren, Ladies and Families,

I hope this letter finds you well and enjoying great weather with loved ones and friends. Summer is one of my favorite times of year and is always extra special at The Ohio Masonic Communities.

With summer comes the close of another season of Grand Master Receptions around the state. Our employees love to participate in these events as it is a time to break bread with old friends, make new ones, and hear the message from our Grand Master. I would like to give a special thanks to Most Worshipful Brother William M. Carter, III and Lady Zoe. They are incredible ambassadors for both the Fraternity and one of the first charities of Ohio Freemasonry, our Ohio Masonic Communities. We are blessed that they chose our mission as their cause and thank them for being amazing advocates for our organization and all those we serve.

As always, there are many exciting changes at The Ohio Masonic Communities, big and small. At Springfield Masonic Community, our repositioning is well underway. We are already known in the community for the excellent care we provide, but this project will allow us to provide even higher quality care to even more residents, giving us the bestin-class facilities for our best-in-class care. We are also excited to welcome Jay Dettorre back as Executive Director of The Ohio Masonic Communities Foundation. Many of you may know Jay as he spent 19 years with The Ohio Masonic Communities previously and we look forward to his vision as we position ourselves for the next 130 years of our organization’s legacy.

Every summer I look forward to Dream Flights. Not because of something I get out of the experience, but because of what it means to our residents. Once they climb up into the open cockpit plane, something changes for them. They realize they can do something they did not think was possible anymore, and suddenly they start dreaming about what else might be possible. At The Ohio Masonic Communities, we strive to see the world through the eyes of those we serve, and we too, are always looking to push the limits on possibilities.

That is our mission in action and why we do the work we do. We are in the business of making people’s dreams happen. It is an honor and privilege to serve the fraternity, our residents, and our staff as we help our communities thrive.

Fraternally, Brother Scott Buchanan CEO, The Ohio Masonic Communities

My Dear Brethren,

A Message from the Grand Master A Season of Light and Legacy

As the warmth of summer surrounds us, there is a similar heat rising in our Fraternity - one not caused by the blistering summer sun, but by the Sacred Flame of Freemasonry itself. Across the state of Ohio, Brethren are gathering in incredible numbers, Lodges are alive with purpose, and there is a renewed energy that reminds us why we first knocked at the door of this ancient and honorable institution. The season mirrors the spirit of our Craft, one overflowing with light and life, and brimming with incredible potential.

Our Brothers have heard me share that Freemasonry in Ohio is on fire. This is not a fire of chaos, but one ignited by the brilliance of transformation. It has been my honor to witness firsthand how our Brethren are striving to Be Legendary: not just in word, but in action. Whether mentoring a new Brother, supporting our communities, or deepening our understanding of our Masonic mysteries, we are living the Craft. We are not simply maintaining Masonic culture; we are shaping it, elevating it, and making it a vital and inspiring part of our everyday lives.

It is hard to believe there is any sort of “Summer Darkness” when the Sacred Flame of Freemasonry is burning so brightly – and so may it ever be!

I invite each of you to carry this momentum forward and mark yo ur calendars for The Grand Master's Masonic Weekend , September 12–14, 2025, at the historic Canton Masonic Temple. This extraordinary event is more than a gathering - it is a celebration of who we are and who we are becoming. With a beautiful and meaningful initia tion experience, world-class programming, and fraternal fellowship, it will be a highlight o f the Masonic year. Visit freemason.com/masonic-weekend-2025 for details and make plans to be part of this legendary occasion.

As we enjoy the long days of summer, let us also reflect on the light we carry within. Freemasonry is not just a set of rituals. It is a culture of honor, growth, and connection. Let’s keep it burning brightly in our Lodges, but also in our homes and in our hearts. Thank you, Brothers and Sisters of our Masonic family, for continuing to Be Legendary. The world is watching, and the Craft is rising!

Sincerely and Fraternally, Bill Carter Grand Master

A Message from The Grand Secretary

Brethren and Friends all,

We have had a very warm summer in Ohio through June. I’m looking forward to what the rest of summer will bring. Enjoy some of those hot evening activities, like baseball under the lights or campouts under the stars. Remember to take a minute to check in on your friends and neighbors.

Update your Grand View Membership account today! This is a busy time for Lodge Secretaries as they review and confirm your Lodge Annual Return information. Lodge and member records are checked before the Grand Lodge year end closes on July 31st each year. Remember to thank your secretary when you see him next. They do a great job keeping our membership and Lodge records in good order.

August 4, 2025, is the opening day to remit your 2026 Lodge Membership Dues. Log into your Grand View Member Account to pay your dues by credit card (auto renewal available if you choose) or send your payment to your Lodge Secretary. By renewing your membership status early, you help us save on program costs by eliminating multiple communications. Remember, yearly membership renewal dues must be remitted on or before your Lodge Annual meeting each November

A new option is available to pay Annual Lodge Dues in Grand View. If you take advantage of auto payment options with your bills, this may work for you. You can choose to sign up to auto pay your Membership Dues in either monthly, quarterly, or annual credit card payments. To be eligible, pay your 2026 dues in full and confirm your Grand View account balance is zero. At that point, you will have the option to sign up to pay dues in equal payments, as you choose, by credit card for the coming years. The payment cycle begins in November and continues through October each year, to have your dues paid before your Lodge annual meeting each November. Please contact the Grand Secretary’s Office with any questions.

The 216th Annual Communication of the Grand Lodge of F&AM of Ohio will be held at Kalahari Resorts in Sandusky, Ohio on October 24, 2025. Reservations were opened July 1st. Just go to www.glohio2025.com to make your meal and hotel reservations. Reservations can also be completed directly in Grand View by going to My Portal/Events and going to October 24th on the event calendar, or by selecting the 2025 Annual Communication Reservation tile. Click once, then follow the electronic form. Helpful tip in Grand View - do not use the back button.

For many years, members attending the Annual Communication may remember a booklet of printed reports prepared for the meeting. It was known as the “Pre-Print”. The “Pre-Print” booklet printing was discontinued a few years ago and replaced with an electronic version made available for all members to review. Look for the new tile selection on your Grand View Portal page on September 15th each year. Take a few minutes to review the reports in preparation for the Annual Communication.

It’s an honor to serve the Grand Lodge of Ohio. The office staff is committed to serving you. Please call us at (614) 885-5318 or email at GLOffice@Freemason.com if we can be of any assistance.

It's a Great Day for Freemasonry!

Grand Secretary’s Staff Spotlight: Genealogy Research Tools

Have you lost contact with a member of your Lodge or maybe their widow? Have you received a report about a member passing away, but don’t have the date? Below is a list of free websites that we regularly use in the Grand Lodge office to locate current addresses, date of death records, et cetera.

Our first avenue for information search: www.google.com – type in first and last name, city, and state. The more detail you enter, the better the results. Your search results will offer websites showing information for the person you are looking for. Most of the time, we find what is needed at this step or from one of the results.

Searching death notices: these are the common public websites where we seem to have the best results when searching for members or family who have passed away www.tributes.com www.familytreenow.com

www.findagrave.com www.legacy.com

Address/person search: these are common public websites we use for genealogy research. We receive requests from members and families trying to fill in the blanks, and these have been very helpful. Sometimes our membership archives are just enough to find the next piece of information. www.whitepages.com www.anywho.com/whitepages www.familytreenow.com

www.mylife.com www.besthistorysites.net www.nuwber.com

The Grand Secretary’s office subscribes to www.beenverified.com. This site offers addresses, phone numbers, email addresses, and more. There is a fee for this site, but it has proved to be very beneficial for our office research.

If you need assistance with your genealogy research, call the office at (614) 885-5318, ext 1, or email GLOffice@Freemason.com to connect with Darlene Shirk. She is our resident genealogy expert. We have access to over two-million member records for the Grand Lodge of Ohio. She can often find the needle in the haystack for those challenging names or locations.

We hope this information is helpful to locate members that you haven’t heard from or who may have passed away and the Lodge was not notified. Please feel free to share your special tools or websites that have proven helpful for you when doing this type of research. We’ll add them to this list. Good luck with your research!

What happened to Home Day?

Introducing Community Fest

Over the last several years, you may have wondered “what happened to Home Day?” It was a beloved summer staple of the Fraternity and The Ohio Masonic Communities. Home

Springfield Masonic Community Welcomes Annette Turner!

In April, Springfield Masonic Community welcomed a new President and Administrator, Annette Turner. Annette began working as a Resident Assistant for a senior living community during college and fell in love with working with older adults. She has a Bachelor of Arts in Music from Wittenberg University and received her certification as a Licensed Nursing Home Administrator (LNHA) from the Ohio Health Care Association’s Core of Knowledge. With more than 20 years of experience, Annette has worked in assisted living and Continuing Care Retirement Commun ities (CCRCs) in both Springfield and Urbana.

“My favorite part of my job will always be the residents. I wan t to do what’s right for our residents and employees. I enjoy taking care of both and watchi ng them thrive. For me, the mission of The Ohio Masonic Communities means I need to lead and make decisions based on residents’ quality of life. I want to have the ability to make a difference.”

Community, Springfield Masonic Community, and Western Reserve Masonic Community. The commonalities between every Community Fest? Food, fellowship, and fireworks.

While these events have been private to those at each campus for the past few years, they will now be open to the public. Especially to you, the Brethren. Everyone in the community and the Fraternity is invited to attend the one in their area, or all three. Like Home Day, each Community Fest will also offer Lodges a chance to participate, such as setting up a booth to sell items as a fundraiser.

Stay tuned for dates and information about how you and your Lodge can get involved in early 2026!

The Grand Duke’s Golf Classic

On a sun-drenched day at Jefferson Country Club, 120 golfers teed off for the 12th Annual Grand Duke’s Golf Classic, united in friendly competition and a shared mission to support memory care programs at The Ohio Masonic Communities.

Laughter rolled across the greens as The Ohio Masonic Communities, staff joined in the fun, connecting with participants and embodying the community spirit that defines the event. Thanks to the overwhelming generosity of lead benefactor US Bank, and so many others, over $125,000 in net proceeds was raised. Proving once again that when purpose meets play, powerful things happen.

Save the date to join us next year! We will return to Jefferson Country Club on June 1, 2026.

Wine, Women, and Shoes

On June 22, 2025, the Grand Lodge of Ohio, Eastern Star of Ohio, and The Ohio Masonic Communities Foundation hosted an inspiring afternoon of purpose and connection at Brookside Country Club.

People from across Ohio came together to celebrate shared values and laughter through spirited bidding on silent auction items and raffle baskets. Top prizes included designer purses, sparkling jewelry, and desirable DSW gift cards that sparked more than a few friendly bidding wars.

Thanks to the leadership of Zoe Carter, First Lady of Ohio; Marla Barber, Grand Worthy Matron; and Dan Shirk, Volunteer and Special Events Coordinator, the event raised over $4,000 in support of the foundation’s vital work.

Planning is already underway for next year’s celebration, and we can’t wait to welcome even more incredible people to the experience!

Rose Society Ball: A Time for Reflection and a Vision for the Future

Each year, the Rose Society Ball celebrates impact, connection, and the heart of our mission. While we looked forward to gathering again, we have made the thoughtful decision to cancel the 2025 event scheduled for September 5 - 6 as we prepare for an exciting new vision in 2026.

The loss of our dear friend and colleague, Brother Rob Hanrahan, has left a noticeable void in our foundation team. Rob’s passion and leadership were integral to the Rose Society Ball’s spirit and success. His absence has led us to pause, reflect, and honor his memory with intention.

To our supporters, donors, and Rose Society membersthank you. Your compassion, flexibility, and dedication make all we do possible.

We are already planning a reimagined Rose Society celebration in 2026 and, when we gather again, it will be unforgettable!

As we enjoy our summers, please consider making a gift to The Ohio Masonic Communities Foundation in support of those we serve. Visit: omcfoundation.org/community

Making Connections at INTERGENERATIONAL DAY CAMPS

The Masonic Youth Outreach Program hosts Intergenerational Day Camps at each campus of The Ohio Masonic Communities. These events allow youth to build relationships with residents, teaching them valuable skills they’ll have for a lifetime. It also greatly impacts the lives of residents who participate.

At the camps, residents and youth spend the day together doing activities such as making crafts, playing games, and even making their own pizzas for lunch.

The events allow youth and residents to build relationships as they teach each other values and skills. The lessons learned through guidance and mentorship promote positive outcomes by teaching the flexibility and resilience to face obstacles throughout life.

These events are open to the children and grandchildren of campus staff and residents, as well as any interested youth in the community. Be on the lookout for the announcement of next year's dates!

Thank you to The Christ Foundation, who provided a portion of funding for this event with a generous grant!

District 17 Family Fun Day

On June 28, 2025, Community Outreach Coordinator Trinity Davidson visited the 17th District, celebrating and educating the members and their families. The event was located at the Athens County Shrine Club in The Plains, Ohio. The district advisors carefully planned and executed the day, from delicious food and a water slide for kids, to bingo inside to beat the heat. Later in the evening, everyone also enjoyed listening to live music nearby.

DREAMS TAKE FLIGHT

A hallmark of every summer, The Ohio Masonic Communities was proud to partner with Dream Flights again. This year, 20 residents who served their country were given a unique honor: the ride of a lifetime. Climbing into a 1940s Stearman biplane seems like a feat of its own. But, soaring the skies in the open cockpit is an experience unlike any other. The smiles on everyone’s faces after landing say it all.

After their flight, each veteran receives a special hat, signed just for them by the pilot. Extra memorable this year, one of the residents was a World War II veteran. After his flight, he was in for a treat. He got to sign the plane – a special honor reserved for those who served in WWII.
