Switzerland has a small, open economy with a low‑carbon energy mix. A May 2017 referendum endorsed a government endeavour to phase out nuclear energy and increase reliance on renewable energy resources. Switzerland has also embarked on an innovative approach to river rehabilitation.
However, the country has been slow to launch a biodiversity action plan despite a high proportion of threatened species and few strictly protected habitats. As a major financial center, Switzerland has a key role to play in promoting green finance and investment.
