PAIN HAS LOST ITS STRENGTH AND DEATH HER THORNS…” Letter from Gustav Mahler to his wife Alma in September 1910 Love and loss: possibly the two most powerful forces that drive the existence of the human being during our life experience. In general, one could say that we long for the former (love) and dread the latter (death, loss), although so many times in life – and more exaggeratedly in art – we can find ourselves in situations where love ends up destroying and death is longed for as an end to suffering.

Referring to music, we could say that these two great themes appear in the works of all composers, in the same way that they turn out to be the greatest source of inspiration in all artistic disciplines, being as they are such transcendental questions. But the composers on this album, Franz Schubert and Robert Schumann, treat such impressive themes with sensitivity, passion, innocence, fervour; eloquently and exquisitely whenever they transcribe them in such an exceptional manner.

Several reasons have brought us together to record this album: obviously an absolute passion for this music, and also the terrible experience of the recent loss of both our parents. We could not think of a better tribute than to transmit through music the deep and devastating pain with which their farewell left us, and at the same time the blessing and energy in the form of eternal love that they handed down to us, rendering them as immortal as this music because only true love can remove the transcendence and burden of death.

Robert Schumann, highly cultured and with acknowledged critical abilities, travelled to Vienna in 1838 to visit the tomb of Franz Schubert, who had died ten years before at the age of 31, and to meet up with Ferdinand Schubert, the composer’s brother, little known and appreciated at that time.

Among the papers and documents that Schumann was able to see at that meeting was a manuscript of a great symphony in C major, unedited and composed by Schubert in the last stage of his very short life. Schumann returned to Leipzig with a copy of the score and, realising its quality and beauty, contrived with his good friend, Felix Mendelssohn, the posthumous premiere of the great work. It took place in the Leipzig Gewandhaus on 21 March 1839, conducted by Mendelssohn himself. The extensive proportions of the work were described and defined as “divine lengths”.

This well-known circumstance brings together the names of two central-European composers whose timelines cross, but ma non tanto aesthetically: whispers in Schubert of a light Romantic breeze that in Schumann turn into a full-blown gale. Both these stages of Romanticism – the early and the full-blown – come together in the warm voice of the cello, offering in this album a truly delightful musical soiree.

SCHUBERT...

The only work by Franz Schubert that cello soloists hold in their repertoire is the Sonata in A-minor, D. 821, though strictly speaking it was not composed for the cello but for the arpeggione,

an instrument that was being promoted at the time but quickly fell into disuse. We can even say that its short existence is only recognised today thanks to its inclusion in the title that Schubert’s beautiful work is known by everywhere, the Sonata Arpeggione, later adapted for the violin, the viola or the flute.

The arpeggione was a hybrid between the cello (or the older viola d’amore) and the guitar. Its shape, size and the fundamental fact that it was played with a bow recalls the cello, but its six strings and frets on the neck were characteristics that brought it close to the guitar. It was called either arpeggione, guitar violoncello or guitar d’amore, but it was Schubert who fixed the name for this instrument once and for all when he used the name arpeggione for the title of his work. It was invented by the Viennese instrument maker Johan Georg Staufer, who presented it in 1823 with Vincenz Schuster as the instrumentalist who supported the idea. It is most likely that Schubert wrote the sonata at Schuster’s request. We know that the work was finished in November 1824 and in the following weeks Schuster made the composition known among his friends and acquaintances in private performances with Schubert playing the piano.

In its simplicity, the Sonata Arpeggione is a piece of music that defies description in its charm, caressed by the magic of Schubert’s exceptional melodism. It is structured around three movements, the second being particularly short, an Adagio that is no more than a “song without words”, with the cello singing and the piano enveloping its voice. Beforehand, 4

in the expansive opening Allegro moderato, we have the chance to admire Schubert’s mastery at turning melodies into themes that can develop within sonata form. Two themes are presented: the first melancholic and cantabile, the second livelier.

And then, after the short Adagio, the finale is an Allegretto of a more virtuoso composition in rondo form, in which the refrain appears three times interwoven round the two couplets. ... and SCHUMANN 25 years after the early Romantic work of Franz Schubert discussed above, Romanticism in music had burgeoned and held Robert Schumann as one of its principal figures in Germany. At the start of 1849 the Schumanns had retired to the countryside fleeing from the strain of the revolutionary episodes that were taking place in Dresden. These incidents involved the great architect Gottfried Semper, who built the Opera House in Dresden, the Burgtheater in Vienna and the great Viennese museums of Natural History and History of Art, among many other buildings. They involved Richard Wagner too, but in a more active and dauntless way. Nonetheless, there in Dresden, far from the barricades and riots, several minor works for various instruments were born, in the typically rapid fashion of Schumann’s creative impulse. Three of them appear on this album.

Between 11 and 12 February of that same year, 1849, Schumann composed his Fantasiestücke (Fantasy pieces), Op. 73, for clarinet in A and

piano: three brilliant and beautiful pieces that Clara Schumann played immediately together with a famous Dresden clarinettist, even though the public premiere did not take place until 14 January in the following year in Leipzig. The three pieces present a dynamic with growing intensity: Zart und mit Ausdruck (Tender and with expression) is how he marks the first piece; Lebhaft, leicht (Lively, light) the second; and Rasch und mit Feuer (Quick and with fire) the third. They are to be played without interruption and the three represent a Lied form, which means they unfold a simple threefold symmetrical structure (A-B-A).

A few days after, still in February 1849, Schumann composed the Adagio and Allegro, Op. 70, which was originally titled Romanza and Allegro, written for horn and piano and thus forming part of the group of works that Schumann dedicated to this instrument with the idea of bringing to light the technical possibilities offered by the three-valve horn, an instrument that was becoming prevalent in Germany at the time. The premiere, with Clara Schumann on the piano, took place in Dresden on 26 January of the following year and strangely this was a version for violin. Indeed, the virtuosity required by the scoring must have been far beyond the capabilities then of the majority of horn players.

The work has been adapted for other instruments as well but since Casals included it in his repertoire the Adagio-Allegro Op. 70 fundamentally belongs to cello players. The Adagio is a kind of highly expressive nocturne while the Allegro follows a rondo prototype. It is strictly symmetrical (A-B-A5

C-A-B-A), with four appearances of the principal theme. Non-transcendental music it may be but written by the hand of a master and undoubtedly appealing.

Robert Schumann turned 40 on 8 June 1850 and, in Leipzig, his wife Clara was sitting at the piano to treat him to an intimate musical evening together with the cellist Andreas Grabau (to whom the score was dedicated) playing the Fünf Stücke im Volkston (Five pieces in Folk Style), which Robert had written sometime in April of the previous year at his countryside retreat near Dresden, where the Schumanns had chosen to live. Clara would also be the interpreter at the premiere of the work in the Leipzig Gewandhaus on 6 December 1859, after

Schumann’s death. The work, for which various versions have been made for other instruments, is a kind of suite that opens “mit Humor” (with humour) and ends with an ardent “stark und markiert” (strong and marked), constructed with principles of variety and contrast. It turns out to be somewhat atypical in Schumann’s catalogue, for the popular aura that inspires these pieces from beginning to end was never embraced by Schumann so decisively as it is here. The five pieces are very simple in ternary form and though they do not respond to a conventionally “virtuoso” composition, they do allow for an admirable exposition of the cello’s peculiarities. Numbers 1, 3 and 5 are written in A minor, so cherished by Schumann and a key found in his two most famous concertos: the Piano Concerto and the Cello Concerto.

ADOLFO GUTIÉRREZ ARENAS was born in Munich to Spanish parents. He started playing the cello at 14 with Elías Arizcuren; he graduated from the Reina Sofia School of Music and participated in Master’s courses with cellists such as János Starker and Ralph Kirshbaum. He was encouraged by cellists Bernard Greenhouse of the Beaux Arts Trio, Lluís Claret and Gary Hoffman. In 2002 he was awarded the Maurice Ravel Prize from the Ravel Academy and began his international career. In 2010 he gave his debut with the London Symphony Orchestra at Ibermúsica in Madrid. Engagements followed with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra under Charles Dutoit, the Orquesta Nacional de España under Ton Koopman and Krzysztof Penderecki, and the London Philharmonic under Vladimir Jurowski. He is a regular guest of all major Spanish orchestras, and has performed with conductors such as Edward Gardner, Michael Tilson Thomas, Roberto Minczuk, Riccardo Chailly, Pablo González, Lucas Macías, Enrique Diemecke and Antoni Ros-Marbà, at major venues all over the world, including the Concertgebouw Amsterdam, the Auditorio Nacional de Música in Madrid and the Ford Theatre in Los Angeles. In October 2021, he made his debut with the Robert Schumann Philharmonie Chemnitz under Guillermo García Calvo.

He is a devoted chamber musician and has appeared at festivals such as the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival, the Mendelssohn Festival of the Gewandhaus Leipzig, Música y Danza de Granada, the Ravinia Festival and the Montreal Symphony Summer Festival with partners including Josu de Solaun, Gilles Vonsattel, Christopher Park and Alissa Margulis. Among his recordings are works by Barber, Rachmaninov and Piazzolla. His recordings of Bach’s Six Suites for solo cello, all Beethoven’s Sonatas and the Dvořák Cello Concerto have been highly acclaimed. Adolfo plays a cello by Francesco Ruggieri (Cremona, 1673).

JOSU DE SOLAUN, pianist, composer and poet, is a profoundly prolific artist. He has won the José Iturbi International Piano Competition, the First European Union Piano Competition and the George Enescu Competition, where he was awarded the title of Officer of Romanian Cultural Merit. He has performed at the Teatro La Fenice, the Mariinsky Theatre, the Kennedy Center, Carnegie Hall, the Metropolitan Opera, the Southbank Centre, the Salle Cortot, Schumann Haus, Novel Hall in Taipei, the Sala Silvestre Revueltas in Mexico and in Prague’s Nostitz Palace, among other venues.

Liebe und Tod: die beiden wohl mächtigsten Kräfte, die die menschliche Existenz in ihren unendlichen Erscheinungsformen und ihrem Erfahrungsreichtum bewegen. Generell könnte man sagen, dass wir uns nach dem einen (der Liebe) sehnen und das andere (den Tod) fürchten, obwohl wir im Leben – und ganz besonders in der Kunst – oft auf Situationen stoßen, in denen die Liebe tödlich endet und der Tod als Ende des Leidens erwünscht wird.

Was die Musik betrifft, so könnte man sagen, dass diese beiden großen Themen in den Werken aller Komponisten auftauchen, so wie sie als transzendente Themen die größte Inspirationsquelle in allen künstlerischen Disziplinen sind. Aber bei den Komponisten dieser CD, Schubert und Schumann, werden sie mit einer so beredten und feinfühligen Sensibilität, Leidenschaft, Unschuld, Inbrunst und allgemein auf eine so eloquente und meisterliche Weise behandelt, dass diese zweifellos ganz außergewöhnliche Übermittler eines so eindrucksvollen Themas sind.

Es gibt mehrere Dinge, die uns bei der Aufnahme dieser CD vereint haben: Natürlich die absolute Liebe zu dieser Musik, aber auch die schreckliche Erfahrung des kürzlichen Verlusts unserer Eltern. Wir konnten uns keinen besseren Tribut vorstellen, als durch die Musik den tiefen und vernichtenden Schmerz zum Ausdruck zu bringen, den ihr Abschied bei uns hinterlassen hat, und gleichzeitig den Segen und die Energie in Form von ewiger Liebe, die uns verbleibt und die sie so unsterblich macht wie diese Musik es ist, denn nur wahre Liebe kann dem Tod die Transzendenz und die Schwere nehmen.

Robert Schumann, ein kultivierter Mann und anerkannter Kritiker mit scharfem Blick, reiste 1838 nach Wien, um das Grab von Franz Schubert zu besuchen (der zehn Jahre zuvor im Alter von 31 Jahren gestorben war) und um Ferdinand Schubert zu treffen, den Bruder dieses großen Wiener Komponisten, der zu jener Zeit wenig bekannt war und kaum geschätzt wurde. Unter den Papieren und Dokumenten, die Schumann bei diesem Treffen einsehen konnte, befand sich auch das Manuskript einer großen, unveröffentlichten C-Dur-Sinfonie, die Schubert in der letzten Phase seines kurzen Lebens komponiert hatte. Schumann kehrte mit einem Exemplar dieser Partitur nach Leipzig zurück und plante angesichts ihrer Vollkommenheit und Schönheit mit dem befreundeten Felix Mendelssohn die posthume Uraufführung des brillanten Werks, die dann am 21. März 1839 im Leipziger Gewandhaus unter der Leitung von Mendelssohn stattfand.

Schumann beschrieb die gewaltigen Proportionen des Werkes und bezeichnete sie als „himmlische Längen”.

Dieser bekannte Umstand führt die Namen zweier mitteleuropäischer Komponisten zusammen, die zwar chronologisch nahe beieinander liegen, nicht jedoch im Hinblick auf Ästhetik: Bei Schubert flattert die romantische Brise sanft, die bei Schumann schon zum Sturm wird. Schuberts Musik kommt sozusagen „von hinten” (Mozart; der frühe Beethoven), während Schumanns Musik nach vorne drängt (Brahms). Diese beiden Seiten der Romantik – die Frühromantik und die Hochromantik – vereint durch

die warme Stimme des Cellos – laden auf dieser CD zu einem reizvollen musikalischen Abend ein.

SCHUBERT...

Das einzige Werk von Franz Schubert, das Cellisten in ihrem Repertoire haben, ist die Sonate in a-Moll, D. 821, die streng genommen nicht für Cello, sondern für Arpeggione geschrieben wurde; ein Instrument, das man damals zu fördern versuchte und das schnell in Vergessenheit geriet, weshalb seine flüchtige Existenz heute nur dank des Namens Arpeggione-Sonate bekannt ist, unter welchem dieses schöne Schubertsche Werk allgemein aufgeführt wird, und von dem auch Bearbeitungen für Violine, Viola und Flöte vorliegen.

Die Arpeggione war eine Mischung zwischen dem Cello (oder der alten Viola d’amore) und der Gitarre.

Die Form, die Größe und die Tatsache, dass das Instrument mit einem Bogen gespielt wurde, erinnern an das Cello, während die sechs Saiten und das Vorhandensein von Bünden Merkmale sind, die es der Gitarre näher bringen. Es wurde undeutlich als Arpeggione, Violoncell-Gitarre oder Guitare d’amour bezeichnet, aber es war Schubert, der durch die Verwendung des ersten Begriffs im Titel seines Werks die endgültige Annahme eines solchen Namens zur Identifizierung des Instruments bestimmte. Ihr Erfinder war der Wiener Geigenbauer Johann Georg Staufer, der sie 1823 vorstellte, und Vincenz Schuster jener Interpret, auf dessen Wunsch Schubert wahrscheinlich die 12

Sonate schrieb. Es ist überliefert, dass das Werk im November 1824 fertiggestellt und in den folgenden Wochen von Schuster in seinem eigenen Haus, mit Schubert am Klavier und im engen Freundeskreis, vorgetragen wurde.

In ihrer Schlichtheit ist die Arpeggione-Sonate eine Musik von undefinierbarem Charme, berührt von der Magie von Schuberts außergewöhnlicher Melodik. Sie ist in drei Sätze gegliedert, von denen der zweite besonders kurz ist, ein Adagio, das nichts anderes ist als ein „Lied ohne Worte”, in dem das Cello singt und das Klavier die Solostimme umhüllt. Zuvor, im breit angelegten einleitenden Allegro moderato können wir Schuberts Geschick bewundern, Melodien in Themen zu verwandeln, die für die Durchführung einer Sonate geeignet sind. Zwei Themen werden vorgetragen: das erste melancholisch und cantabile, das zweite lebhaft.

Nach dem bereits erwähnten Adagio ist das Finale ein virtuoseres Allegretto in Form eines Rondos mit dreifachen Refrain und dazwischenliegenden Couplets. … und SCHUMANN Fünfundzwanzig Jahre nach dem gerade besprochen protoromantischen Werk Franz Schuberts befand sich die musikalische Romantik in ihrer Blütezeit und fand in Robert Schumann einen ihrer deutschen Hauptvertreter. Zu Beginn des Jahres 1849 hatte sich das Ehepaar Schumann aufs Land zurückgezogen, um den revolutionären Wirren zu entgehen, die sich in Dresden ereigneten und an denen der berühmte Architekt Gottfried

Semper (Autor der Dresdner Oper, des Wiener Burgtheaters und der großen Wiener Museen für Natur- und Kunstgeschichte neben vielen anderen Werken), und aktiver und mutiger noch Richard Wagner beteiligt hatten. Von Dresden entfernt und abseits aller Revolten und Barrikaden entstanden mit der für Schumann typisch kreativen Leichtigkeit mehrere kleine Werke für verschiedene Instrumente, von denen drei auf dieser CD enthalten sind.

Zwischen dem 11. und 12. Februar 1849 schrieb Schumann seine Fantasiestücke, Op. 73 für A-Klarinette und Klavier, drei brillante und schöne Stücke, die Clara Schumann sofort danach mit einem führenden Klarinettisten in Dresden spielte, obwohl die öffentliche Uraufführung erst am 14.

Januar des folgenden Jahres in Leipzig stattfinden sollte. Das Triptychon weist eine zunehmende dynamische Kurve auf: zart und mit Ausdruck ist die Bezeichnung für das erste Stück; lebhaft, leicht für das zweite und rasch, mit Feuer für das dritte. Alle drei werden nacheinander gespielt und besitzen die einfache, dreiteilige und symmetrische A-B-AStruktur der Liedform.

Wenige Tage später, im Februar 1849, komponierte Schumann das Diptychon Adagio und Allegro, Op. 70, das ursprünglich den Titel Romanze und Allegro trug und für Horn und Klavier geschrieben wurde. Es gehört zu jener Gruppe von Werken, die der Komponist diesem Instrument widmete, um sich mit den technischen Möglichkeiten des Horns mit drei Ventilen vertraut zu machen, dessen Gebrauch sich damals in Deutschland zu verbreiten begann. Die Uraufführung mit Clara Schumann 13

am Klavier fand am 26. Januar des folgenden Jahres in Dresden statt, und zwar kurioserweise in einer Geigenfassung. Sicherlich überstieg die Virtuosität der Partitur die Möglichkeiten der meisten Hornisten der damaligen Zeit, jedenfalls derer, zu denen die Schumanns zu dieser Zeit und an diesem Ort Zugang hatten. Das Werk wurde auch für andere Instrumente bearbeitet, doch seit Casals es in sein Repertoire aufgenommen hatte, ist dieses Adagio-Allegro Op. 70 vor allem den Cellisten vorbehalten. Das Adagio ist eine Art ausdrucksstarkes Nocturne, während das Allegro dem Prototyp des Rondos entspricht, streng symmetrisch (A-B-A-C-A-C-A-B-A), mit vier Wiederholungen des Refrains oder Hauptthemas.

Es ist keine besonders tiefgründige Musik, aber von meisterlicher Hand geschrieben und von unbestreitbarem Reiz.

Am 8. Juni 1850 wurde Robert Schumann 40 Jahre alt, und in Leipzig setzte sich seine Frau Clara zu einem intimen Abend an den Flügel, um ihm zusammen mit dem Cellisten Andreas Grabau

– dem Widmungsträger der Partitur – die Fünf Stücke im Volkston vorzutragen, die Robert im April des Vorjahres in ihrem Landsitz bei Dresden geschrieben hatte. Clara war auch die Interpretin bei der öffentlichen Uraufführung des Werks, die am 6.

Dezember 1859, nach dem Tod des Komponisten, im Gewandhaus zu Leipzig stattfand. Das Werk, von dem es auch andere Fassungen gibt, ist eine Art Suite, die „mit Humor” beginnt und in einem ungestümen „stark und markiert” endet, organisiert nach Kriterien der Vielfalt und des Kontrasts. Diese Stücke sind untypisch für den Komponisten, denn das volkstümliche Flair, das sie von Anfang bis Ende durchzieht, taucht bei ihm kaum woanders auf. Sie sind sehr einfach, dreiteilig und obwohl sie nicht einer konventionell „virtuosen” Schreibweise entsprechen, erlauben sie eine bewundernswerte Nutzung der besonderen Eigenschaften des Cellos.

Drei von diesen Stücken (die ungeraden) stehen in der für den Komponisten so wichtigen Tonart a-Moll: in der Tonart seiner beiden berühmten Konzerte, dem Klavierkonzert und dem Konzert für Violoncello.

ADOLFO GUTIÉRREZ ARENAS wurde als Sohn spanischer Eltern in München geboren. Im Alter von 14 Jahren begann er mit dem Cellospiel bei Elías Arizcuren; sein Studium schloss er an der Königin-SophiaMusikhochschule in Madrid ab. Darüber hinaus besuchte er zahlreiche Meisterkurse, u.a. bei János Starker und Ralph Kirshbaum. Wesentliche Anregungen erhielt er auch von Bernard Greenhouse, dem Cellisten des legendären Beaux-Art-Trios und von Gary Hoffman. 2002 gewann Gutiérrez Arenas den MauriceRavel-Preis der Ravel-Akademie – es war der Auftakt zu seiner internationalen Karriere. Sein Debüt mit dem London Symphony Orchestra gab Adolfo Gutiérrez Arenas 2010 im Rahmen der renommierten Konzertreihe ,,Ibermúsica” in Madrid. Auftritte mit dem Royal Philharmonic Orchestra unter Leitung von Charles Dutoit, Orquesta Nacional de España unter Ton Koopman und Krzystzof Penderecki, London Philharmonic Orchestra unter Vladimir Jurowski schlossen sich an. Regelmäßig tritt er ebenso mit allen großen Orchestern seiner spanischen Heimat auf. Er arbeitet darüber hinaus mit Dirigenten wie Edward Gardner, Michael Tilson Thomas, Roberto Minczuk, Riccardo Chailly, Pablo González, Lucas Macías, Enrique Diemecke and Antoni Ros-Marbá zusammen. Adolfo Gutiérrez Arenas spielt in zahlreichen bekannten Konzertsälen, darunter dem Concertgebouw Amsterdam, dem Auditorio Nacional de Música in Madrid und dem Ford Theatre in Los Angeles. Im Oktober 2021 gab er sein Debüt bei der Robert Schumann-Philharmonie Chemnitz unter Leitung von Guillermo García Calvo.

Mit Begeisterung widmet er sich darüber hinaus der Kammermusik auf Festivals wie dem Schleswig-Holstein Musikfestival, dem Mendelssohn-Festival des Leipziger Gewandhauses, dem Festival Música y Danza de Granada, dem Ravinia-Festival und dem Montreal Symphony Summer Festival mit Partnern wie Josu de Solaun, Gilles Vonsattel, Christopher Park und Alissa Margulis. Von Gutiérrez Arenas sind Einspielungen zahlreicher Werke erschienen, so von Barber, Rachmaninow und Piazzolla. Seine Aufnahmen der sechs Cello-Suiten von Johann Sebastian Bach, der Cellosonaten von Beethoven und aller Werke für Cello und Orchester von Dvořák wurden von der internationalen Kritik überschwänglich aufgenommen. Adolfo Gutiérrez Arenas spielt auf einem Cello von Francesco Ruggieri aus dem Jahr 1673.

Der Pianist, Komponist und Dichter JOSU DE SOLAUN ist ein überaus produktiver Künstler, Gewinner des José-Iturbi-Wettbewerbs, des Ersten EU-Klavierwettbewerbs und des George-Enescu-Wettbewerbs, für den er den Titel des rumänischen Kulturbeauftragten erhielt. Er trat unter anderem im La Fenice, im Mariinsky-Theater, im Kennedy Center, in der Carnegie Hall, in der Metropolitan Opera, im Southbank Centre, im Salle Cortot, im Schumann-Haus, in der Novel Hall in Taipeh, im Sala Silvestre Revueltas in Mexiko und im Nostitz-Palast in Prag auf.

Für seine CD Fantasque mit der Geigerin Franziska Pietsch wurde er mit dem ICMA (International Classical Music Awards) ausgezeichnet, und er hat Aufnahmen für die Labels IBS Classical und Naxos gemacht.

Er lebt derzeit in Madrid, wo er an der Entwicklung des gesamten Lehrplans der Akademie Musical Arts Madrid mitgewirkt hat.

EL DOLOR HA PERDIDO SUS FUERZAS, Y LA MUERTE, SUS ESPINAS.” Carta de Gustav Mahler a su mujer Alma, septiembre de 1910 El Amor y La Muerte: posiblemente las dos fuerzas más poderosas que mueven la existencia del ser humano en sus infinitas lecturas y experiencias vitales. En general se podría decir que anhelamos lo uno (el amor) y tememos la otra (la muerte), aunque tantas veces en la vida –y más de forma hiperbólica en el arte– nos podamos encontrar con situaciones en las que el amor acaba matando y la muerte es deseada como fin del sufrimiento.

Hablando de música, podría decirse que estos dos grandes temas aparecen en la obra de todos los compositores, al igual que suponen la mayor fuente de inspiración en todas las disciplinas artísticas como cuestiones tan trascendentes que son. Pero en los compositores que componen este disco, Schubert y Schumann, son tratados con una sensibilidad, pasión, inocencia, fogosidad y en general de forma tan elocuente y exquisita que sin duda son transcriptores de excepción de tan imponente temática.

Varias son las cosas que nos han unido al grabar este álbum: por supuesto el amor absoluto por esta música, pero también la terrible experiencia de la reciente pérdida de nuestros padres. No se nos ocurría mejor homenaje que explicar a través de la música el dolor tan profundo y devastador que nos ha dejado su adiós, y al mismo tiempo la bendición y energía en forma de amor eterno que nos legaron y que les hace tan inmortales como lo es esta música, porque sólo el verdadero amor puede quitar trascendencia y peso a la muerte.

Robert Schumann, hombre cultivado y de reconocida capacidad crítica, viajó a Viena en 1838 para visitar la tumba de Franz Schubert (que había muerto diez años antes, a los 31 de edad) y entrevistarse con Ferdinand Schubert, el hermano del enorme compositor vienés tan escasamente conocido y valorado por entonces.

Entre los papeles y documentos que Schumann pudo ver en aquel encuentro figuraba el manuscrito de una gran Sinfonía en do mayor, inédita, que había compuesto Schubert en el último tramo de su cortísima vida. Schumann regresó a Leipzig con una copia de esta partitura y, vistas su calidad y belleza, planeó con su buen amigo Felix Mendelssohn el estreno póstumo de la genial obra, que tuvo lugar en la Gewandhaus de Leipzig el 21 de marzo de 1839, bajo la dirección de Mendelssohn. Las dilatadas proporciones de la obra fueron descritas y calificadas por Schumann como “divinas longitudes”.

Esta conocida circunstancia junta los nombres de dos compositores centroeuropeos próximos en la cronología, ma non tanto estéticamente: en Schubert aletea con suavidad la brisilla romántica que, en Schumann, ya es vendaval. La música de Schubert viene de atrás (Mozart, el primer Beethoven), mientras que la de Schumann va hacia delante (Brahms). Estas dos caras del Romanticismo –la temprana y la plena–, unificadas por la cálida voz del violonchelo, invitan en este álbum a una deliciosa velada musical.

SCHUBERT...

La única obra de Franz Schubert que los solistas de violonchelo tienen en repertorio es la Sonata en

la menor, D. 821 que, en rigor, no fue escrita para violonchelo, sino para arpeggione, un instrumento que se intentó promover en la época y que rápidamente cayó en desuso, hasta el punto de que podemos afirmar que su efímera existencia es conocida en nuestros días tan solo gracias a la denominación de Sonata Arpeggione con que universalmente es conocida esta bella obra schubertiana de la que también se han hecho adaptaciones para violín, para viola o para flauta.

El arpeggione era un instrumento híbrido entre el violonchelo (o la vieja viola d’amore) y la guitarra. La forma, el tamaño y el hecho fundamental de que se tañera con arco remitían al violonchelo, mientras que sus seis cuerdas y la presencia de trastes en el mástil eran características que lo acercaban a la guitarra. Se le denominaba indistintamente arpeggione, guitarraviolonchelo o guitarra d’amore, pero fue Schubert quien, al utilizar el primer término en el título de su obra, determinó la adopción definitiva de tal nombre para identificar el instrumento. Su creador fue el luthier vienés Johann Georg Staufer, quien lo presentó en 1823, y el instrumentista que recibió positivamente la idea fue Vincenz Schuster. Seguramente, Schubert escribiría la sonata por encargo directo de Schuster, y consta que la obra fue terminada en noviembre de 1824 y que en las siguientes semanas fue dada a conocer por Schuster a sus allegados, en su propia casa, con Schubert al piano.

En su sencillez, la Sonata Arpeggione es una música de indefinible encanto, tocada por la magia del excepcional melodismo schubertiano. Se estructura 20

en tres movimientos, especialmente breve el segundo de ellos, un Adagio que no es sino una “canción sin palabras”, con el chelo cantando y el piano arropando su voz. Antes, en el amplio Allegro moderato inicial habremos admirado el oficio de Schubert para hacer de las melodías temas susceptibles de desarrollo sonatístico. Dos son los temas enunciados: melancólico y cantabile el primero, más vivo el segundo. Y, tras el comentado Adagio, el Finale es un Allegretto de escritura más virtuosística que presenta forma de rondó, con tres apariciones del estribillo y dos couplets intercalados. ... y SCHUMANN Veinticinco años después de la protorromántica obra de Franz Schubert que acabamos de comentar, el romanticismo musical había estallado y tenía en Robert Schumann a uno de sus principales exponentes en Alemania. A comienzos de 1849 el matrimonio Schumann se había retirado al campo huyendo de la tensión generada por los episodios revolucionarios que se vivían en la ciudad de Dresde, en los cuales se implicaron el gran arquitecto Gottfried Semper –autor del Teatro de Ópera de Dresde, del Burgtheater de Viena y de los grandes museos vieneses de Historia natural y de Historia del arte, entre tantas otras obras– y, más activa y bravamente, el compositor Richard Wagner. Pues bien, en Dresde, pero apartados de aquel ambiente de revueltas y barricadas, nacieron, con la rapidez típica de los impulsos creativos schumannianos, varias obras de pequeño formato

para instrumentos diversos, tres de las cuales se recogen en este álbum.

Entre el 11 y el 12 de febrero de aquel 1849, escribió Schumann sus Fantasiestücke, op. 73 (Piezas de fantasía) para clarinete (en la) y piano, tres brillantes y bellas páginas que Clara Schumann tocó inmediatamente con un destacado clarinetista de Dresde, si bien el estreno público se produciría en Leipzig el 14 de enero del año siguiente. El tríptico presenta una dinámica de intensidad creciente: Tierno y con expresión es la indicación que lleva la primera pieza; Vivo, ligero la segunda y Rápido, con fuego la tercera. Se interpretan sin solución de continuidad y las tres presentan forma de Lied, o sea, presentan la sencilla estructura ternaria y simétrica A-B-A. Pocos días después, sin salir de febrero de 1849, Schumann compuso el díptico Adagio y Allegro, op. 70 que en origen se tituló Romanza y Allegro y que estaba escrito para trompa y piano, formando parte del grupo de obras que el compositor dedicó a este instrumento con la idea de familiarizarse con las posibilidades técnicas que ofrecía la trompa de tres pistones, cuyo uso empezaba por entonces a expandirse en Alemania. El estreno, con Clara Schumann al piano, tuvo lugar en Dresde el 26 de enero del año siguiente y, curiosamente, fue en versión de violín. Ciertamente, el virtuosismo que presenta la partitura debía superar los recursos de la mayoría de los trompistas de la época: en todo caso, la de los trompistas a los que los Schumann tenían acceso en aquel lugar y momento. La obra se ha adaptado también para otros instrumentos,

pero, desde que Casals la incorporara a su repertorio, este Adagio-Allegro, op. 70 es, fundamentalmente, patrimonio de los violonchelistas. El Adagio es una especie de nocturno muy expresivo, mientras que el Allegro responde al prototipo de rondó, rigurosamente simétrico (A-B-A-C-A-B-A), con cuatro apariciones del estribillo o tema principal. Se trata de música no trascendente, pero escrita por mano maestra y de incuestionable atractivo.

El 8 de junio de 1850 Robert Schumann cumplía 40 años y, en Leipzig, su esposa Clara se sentaba al piano para, en velada íntima, obsequiarle interpretando, junto al violonchelista Andreas Grabau –dedicatario de la partitura– las Fünf Stücke im Volkston (Cinco piezas en estilo popular) que había escrito Robert en unos días de abril del año anterior, en el mencionado retiro campestre, próximo a Dresde, por el que los Schumann habían optado. También sería Clara intérprete del estreno público de la obra, que tuvo lugar en la Gewandhaus de Leipzig el 6 de diciembre

de 1859, ya desaparecido el compositor. La obra, de la que se han hecho versiones para otros instrumentos, es una especie de suite que comienza “con humor” y termina en un impetuoso “con fuerza y marcado”, organizándose con criterios de variedad y contraste.

Resulta un tanto atípica en el catálogo del compositor, pues el aire popular que impregna estas piezas de principio a fin nunca fue practicado por Schumann tan decididamente como aquí. Las cinco son muy sencillas, de forma ternaria, y, aunque no responden a un tipo de escritura convencionalmente “virtuosística”, sí permiten un aprovechamiento admirable de las peculiaridades del violonchelo. Tres de ellas (las impares) están en la tonalidad de la menor tan cara al compositor: la de sus dos celebrados conciertos, el de piano y el de violonchelo.

Nacido en Múnich de padres españoles, ADOLFO GUTIÉRREZ ARENAS a los catorce años empezó a estudiar cello con Elías Arizcuren, graduándose más tarde en la Escuela Reina Sofía, participando en clases con János Starker y Ralph Kirshbaum, entre otros, y recibiendo importantes consejos de los cellistas Bernard Greenhouse, del Trío Beaux Arts, y de Gary Hoffman. En 2002 fue galardonado con el Premio Maurice Ravel de la Academia Ravel y comenzó su carrera internacional. En 2010 debutó con la London Symphony Orchestra en el ciclo Ibermúsica de Madrid, a lo que siguieron conciertos con la Royal Philharmonic Orchestra con Charles Dutoit, la Orquesta Nacional de España con Ton Koopman y Krzystzof Penderecki, y la London Philharmonic con Vladimir Jurowski. Es invitado con frecuencia a tocar con las principales orquestas españolas, y ha actuado junto a directores como Edward Gardner, Michael Tilson Thomas, Roberto Minczuk, Riccardo Chailly, Pablo González, Lucas Macías, Enrique Diemecke y Antoni Ros-Marbà en escenarios de todo el mundo incluyendo el Concertgebouw de Ámsterdam, el Auditorio Nacional de Música de Madrid y el Ford Theatre de Los Ángeles. En octubre de 2021 debutó con la Robert Schumann Philharmonie de Chemnitz bajo la batuta de Guillermo García Calvo.

Es un músico de cámara devoto, y ha actuado en festivales como el Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival, el Mendelssohn Festival de la Gewandhaus de Leipzig, Festival Internacional de Música y Danza de Granada, el Festival de Ravinia y el Montreal Symphony Summer Festival, colaborando con músicos de la talla de Josu de Solaun, Gilles Vonsattel, Christopher Park y Alissa Margulis. Entre sus grabaciones se encuentran obras de Barber, Rachmaninov y Piazzolla, y sus álbumes de las Seis suites para cello solo de Bach, de las Sonatas para cello de Beethoven y del Concierto de cello de Dvořák han sido muy elogiadas. Adolfo toca un cello de Francesco Ruggieri (Cremona, 1673).
