ENG It all began in 1986. We were both performing at the Nordic Music Days festival in Reykjavík, with two different ensembles of musicians from the Reykjavík Chamber Orchestra. After the concert we got talking and discussed how fun it would be to combine our instruments and do some performing together. Shortly afterwards we had the opportunity to realise this idea when we were asked to perform at an art exhibition opening at the Living Art Museum in Iceland. With that, a warm and fruitful collaboration began, one that is still going strong.

Since then, our duo has been performing concerts all around Iceland and abroad. Among many memorable concerts are those in the Round Tower in Copenhagen, an old church in Vilafamés in Spain, Gøta in the Faroe Islands, and Sveaborg in Helsinki, Finland.

Alongside our concerts, we were lucky to be chosen to introduce and perform music in many elementary and middle schools in Iceland. For this, we had to travel from one place to another, to the far corners of our country, often in severe winter weather and hazardous conditions, and over snowy mountains. Our car would get stuck and our finest Italian shoes and music stands had to be used to clear the snow and ice. On one occasion we even needed to be rescued by a farmer bringing heavy-duty equipment to shovel us out and clear the road for us. These unpredictable driving conditions led to a few humorous “near misses”, such as the time we missed the ferry to the small island of Hrísey, and ended up entering the concert venue at the same time as the audience. We were also asked to participate in several theatrical productions, including those of the National Theatre of Iceland in Reykjavík. Through all these varied experiences our duo continued to develop.

We have often found that there is not much repertoire available for this combination of instruments. But then Páll started to arrange. Laufey searched for interesting pieces and Páll arranged them for violin and guitar. At first these were mostly pieces from the Baroque era. Gradually, music from other periods turned up, including the Classical and Romantic eras. In 1996 it was time to record an album with pieces by Corelli, Tartini and Paganini. Páll’s arrangement of the Sonatina by Tartini was featured on this album, entitled Italian Music.

Dialogue and collaboration with composers has always been a part of our mission. Over the years we have actively approached composers about music for our instrumental combination; whether they might already have something we could perform, or might write something new for us. We are lucky that the composers we approached have met our request with great enthusiasm.

Duo Concordia

Tryggvi M. Baldvinsson (b. 1965) studied composition at the Reykjavík College of Music and later became head of Music Theory there, but since 2014 has been Dean of Music at the Iceland University of the Arts. He also studied at the Vienna Conservatoire, specialising both in composition and in Renaissance counterpoint, a discipline that has informed his own approach. His output ranges from TV music for Nordic noir series to pieces for the concert hall. He is nominated for the Icelandic Music Award 2020 for the music in the TV series Flatey Enigma. Baldvinsson composed his Sónata at the request of Duo Concordia, and dedicated the work in part to a dear family friend who had recently passed away. Duo Concordia premiered the Sónata at the Cathedral of Hólar, Iceland, in 2006. The work begins with incisive gestures from the guitar, then the violin, after which the two instruments unfold an imitative dialogue of atonal motifs, suggesting the influence of serialism inherited from the Second Viennese School and the mid-20th-century avant garde. In contrast, the Elegia is essentially tonal, the guitar’s ascending arpeggiac figure supporting the violin’s plaintive melody, with moments when the guitar comes to the fore, increasing the movement’s momentum.

Hilmar Þórðarson (Thórdarson) (b. 1960) attended the Reykjavík College of Music before moving to the USA, where he studied at Yale and at the California Institute of the Arts. He then became composer-inresidence of the computer music studios at Stanford and Berkeley. Interactive computer technology has become a key component of Thórdarson’s style, prompting him to found the Kopavogur Computer Music Centre and New Music Technology at the Iceland University of the Arts. Thórdarson’s compositions have been performed all over the world. He composed Gefjun for Duo Concordia using what the duo calls “an old Icelandic felt of notes to spin a unique thread”. The name ‘Gefjun’ refers to a Norse goddess of fertility, but is also the name of a factory in Akureyri, northern Iceland, where products are created from wool, just as Thórdarson’s music is spun from the original material, which is unique to Iceland. Thórdarson’s approach finds a parallel in the research of scholar Hreinn Steingrímsson, whose work is described in a volume edited by Dorothy Stone and Stephen L. Mosko: “The Icelandic language is the most uncorrupted modern language with respect to Old Norse, so why not the music? … How does one try to understand music that did not have fixed pitch,

was always changing, and had a completely unique vocal quality?” This vocal quality is apparent from the outset, with the violin’s plangent statements, recitative-like in their spontaneous rhythmic quality, shifting between long-breathed phrases and quick, stuttering outbursts, often paired with the guitar, which emphasises or comments upon the violin line. Duo Concordia premiered Gefjun in Helsinki, Finland, in the year 2000.

note, around which the guitar traces delicate patterns. Sigurbjörnsson exploits the timbral similarities between the instruments during the violin’s pizzicato passages, at other times creating an imitative relationship between the two, or using swooping portamento effects on the violin to add further colour. Vapp was premiered by Duo Concordia in the church of Áskirkja in Reykjavík in 1993.

Þorkell (Thorkell) Sigurbjörnsson (1938-2013) was also an alumnus of the Reykjavík College of Music, first as a student, and later as a teacher and department chair. He continued his education in the United States and attended masterclasses in Tanglewood and Darmstadt. He became one of the most progressive, influential and prolific composers of his time. His expansive output embraced sacred choral music, opera, concertos, electronics, orchestral, and chamber works. His chamber opera Grettir was premiered in Bayreuth. Sigurbjörnsson composed Vapp for Duo Concordia. According to the composer, it is an emulation of birds delicately scurrying across the ground, perhaps in search of worms. The piece exudes a timeless, pastoral quality established by the violin’s opening pedal

English composer John A. Speight (b. 1945) studied at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, and privately with Sir Richard Rodney Bennett. Speight moved to Iceland in 1972 and has been resident there ever since, producing an array of works running the full gamut of forms, from solo works to orchestral scores. His music is performed internationally, and has won numerous awards, including the Icelandic Music Award in 2003 for his Christmas Oratorio. Speight composed Echoes of Orpheus for solo guitar in 1986. It was premiered

by Páll Eyjólfsson in the church of Áskirkja in 1987, at a Musica Nova event organised by the Composers’ Society of Iceland, of which institution Speight became Chairman in 1992. Speight has described Echoes of Orpheus as starting with a

ball or a grand party, after which Orpheus goes down to Hades to search for Euridice, a journey that ultimately sends him mad. Percussive guitar effects and vocal colourations such as whistling create an eerie, otherworldly atmosphere in this imaginative retelling of the Orpheus myth. Of Samtvinna, Speight has said that it concerns the interaction between two protagonists who sometimes fight, yet are energised and spurred on by the conflict. This combative atmosphere is apparent from the start, with forceful gestures on both instruments, before the initial spat dies down and subtler dialogue takes over, an underlying tension simmering beneath the surface all the while. Speight composed Samtvinna for Duo Concordia in 2013, and the pair premiered it at Sigurgeir’s Bird Museum by Lake Myvatn in 2018.

Varèse, among others. In the 1950s he experienced electronic music at studios in Cologne, Warsaw and Paris, which would prove to be a turning point in his own output; he wrote Iceland’s first classical electronic work, in 1960. Jóhannsson worked extensively in Icelandic broadcasting and theatre, specifically as conductor and répétiteur at the National Theatre. Jóhannsson and Laufey became acquainted while working together in the theatre, and shortly afterwards he composed Sonorities VI for her. Just as Luciano Berio wrote a series of solo Sequenzas, so Jóhannsson wrote a number of Sonorities. The work begins with a single, skittishly repeated note, after which the violin draws us into an intricate soliloquy occasionally punctuated by the initial gesture. Laufey Sigurðardóttir premiered the work at the Reykjavík Arts Festival in 1990.

Magnús Blöndal Jóhannsson (1925-2005) was a pivotal figure in the evolution of Icelandic music, especially during the middle of the 20th century. He studied at the Juilliard School and encountered

Laufey Sigurðardóttir (b. 1955) was born and raised in Reykjavík, Iceland.

She graduated from the Reykjavík College of Music in 1974 and took postgraduate studies in the United States with Professor George Neikrug. Later she took lessons in Rome and with Arthur Grumiaux in Belgium. Laufey has appeared as a soloist and chamber musician in Europe, Russia, and the United States, and has premiered a number of pieces written especially for her. Laufey is a permanent member of the Iceland Symphony Orchestra. She has taught violin at the Reykjavík College of Music for decades. She is the founder of the festival Music at Lake Myvatn and has directed it from the beginning. Since 1997 she has organised a Mozart Concert Series in Reykjavík.

Páll Eyjólfsson (b. 1958) was born and grew up in Reykjavík, Iceland.

He graduated from the Eythor Thorlaksson Guitar School in 1981, and the Reykjavík College of Music. He pursued further studies in Alcoy in Spain with José Luís González, a pupil of Regino Sainz de la Maza in Madrid.

Since returning to Iceland he has been active as both performer and guitar teacher.

The Icelandic National Broadcasting Service has recorded his playing, including John A. Speight’s Concerto with the Iceland Symphony Orchestra. Páll has attended many masterclasses in Spain and organised several in Iceland. Páll has arranged and premiered numerous pieces for his instrument. In 2009 his solo album Cariño was released in Reykjavík.

Laufey Sigurðardóttir and Páll Eyjólfsson have worked together as violin and guitar duo since 1986. They have held concerts in many places, both in Iceland and abroad, and the Icelandic National Broadcasting Service has recorded the duo. In 1996 their debut CD was released in Reykjavík. Their repertoire stretches from the Baroque era to contemporary music, and composers have written works especially for them.

ICE Allt byrjaði þetta árið 1986. Þá spiluðum við með Kammersveit Reykjavíkur á Norrænum músíkdögum í Langholtskirkju, hvort með sínum tónlistarhópnum. Eftir tónleikana kom til tals hve gaman gæti verið að spila saman. Ekki leið á löngu þar til tilefnið kom, þegar beiðni barst um að spila við opnun myndlistarsýningar á Nýlistasafninu. Þar með hófst gott og gefandi samstarf sem enn sér ekki fyrir endann á.

Við tóku tónleikar um allt land og einnig erlendis. Eftirminnilegir eru tónleikar í Sívalaturni í Kaupmannahöfn og í gamalli kirkju í Vilafamés á Spáni. Einnig var mjög sérstakt að spila í Sveaborg í Finnlandi og í Götu í Færeyjum. Styrkir fengust til að halda tónleika á landsbyggðinni og einnig vorum við svo heppin að veljast til þess að spila og kynna tónlist í flestum grunnskólum á Íslandi. Við ferðuðumst vítt og breitt um landið, í öllum veðrum og við ýmiskonar aðstæður, stundum mjög erfiðar. Sátum til dæmis föst um miðjan vetur á Fljótsheiði og var bjargað af góðum manni þar sem við reyndum að moka okkur út með nótnastatífum og spariskóm. Misstum af ferjunni út í Hrísey og vorum fyrir bragðið samferða tónleikagestum inn í tónleikasalinn.

Við tókum einnig þátt í leiksýningum, meðal annars hjá Þjóðleikhúsinu, og áfram héldum við.

Oft var erfitt að finna efni fyrir hljóðfærin okkar en þá var bara að bretta upp ermar og taka til við útsetningar. Laufey fann áhugaverð verk og Páll útsetti. Barokktónskáldin, með sína tölusettu bassa, rötuðu á efnisskrá okkar og umritanir á verkum klassískari og rómantískari höfunda urðu til. Árið 1996 var kominn tími til að gefa út disk og innihélt hann verk eftir Corelli, Tartini og Paganini. Páll umritaði sónötuna eftir Tartini. Diskurinn bar nafnið Ítölsk tónlist.

Samtal og samvinna við íslensk tónskáld voru og eru stór hluti af okkar vinnu. Við höfum leitað til þeirra og falast eftir tónverkum frá þeim fyrir okkur og tónskáldin hafa brugðist vel við kalli okkar.

Tryggvi M. Baldvinsson (f. 1965) stundaði tónlistarog tónsmíðanám við Tónlistarskólann í Reykjavík en hélt síðan til framhaldsnáms við Tónlistarháskólann í Vín í Austurríki. Hann var um árabil deildarstjóri tónfræðigreina við Tónlistarskólann í Reykjavík en er í dag forseti Tónlistardeildar Listaháskóla Íslands. Í Vín sérhæfði Tryggvi sig í kontrapunkti og í tónmáli endurreisnartímans. Þá marglaga og öguðu þræði nýtir hann í fjölbreytilegum tónverkum sínum sem hljóma í tónleika- og kvikmyndasölum víða um heim. Nýlega samdi hann tónlistina við sjónvarpsseríuna Flateyjargátuna sem tilnefnd er til Íslensku tónlistarverðlaunanna 2020. Tryggvi samdi verkið Sónata að beiðni Páls og Laufeyjar en seinni þáttinn í því verki tileinkar hann minningu fjölskylduvinar. Páll og Laufey frumfluttu verkið í Hóladómkirkju 2006. Sónata hefst á hvatningu frá gítarnum sem fiðlan gengst við og hefja hljóðfærin ímyndað samtal, hvort með sínu nefi, sem líkja má við endurlit til tónmáls frá tímum annars Vínarskólans, raðtónlistar eða 12 tóna kerfis, spunnið með ómstríðri framúrstefnutónlistinni sem svo var kölluð á atómöld eða um miðja tuttugustu öldina. Elegia-kaflinn er aftur á móti lagrænn og skapar gítarinn þétta en frjálsa

umgjörð um laglínu fiðlunnar en tekur stundum yfir og kemst þá hljómasveimurinn á fullt skrið.

Hilmar Þórðarson (f. 1960) lærði í Tónlistarskólanum í Reykjavík áður en hann fluttist til Bandaríkjanna til náms í Yale og við California Institute of the Arts. Hann var um tíma staðartónskáld tölvutónlistarstúdíós við Berkeleyháskóla og Stanford. Hilmar hefur sérhæft sig í gagnvirkri tölvutækni og var einn af stofnendum raftónlistarbrauta við Tónlistarskóla Kópavogs og Listaháskóla Íslands. Hann býr nú í Noregi þar sem hann starfar við tónsmíðar og sjálfstæðar listrannsóknir. Verk hans hafa verið flutt víða um heim. Hilmar notar gamalkunnugt þel til að spinna úr í verkinu Gefjun. Í norrænu goðafræðinni er ásynjan Gefjun talin tengjast frjósemi en nafn hennar var einnig notað á ullarverksmiðju í fæðingarbæ Hilmars, Akureyri. Verkfærakista tónsmiðsins inniheldur þennan þráð og líkir hann sköpun sinni, uppsetningu tónvefjarins, við fræðilegar rannsóknir Hreins Steingrímssonar, föðurbróður Laufeyjar, á íslenskum rímum og kvæðalögum. Afrakstur rannsókna Hreins er að finna í riti sem Dorothy Stone og Stephen L. Mosko ritstýra, en þar segir

m.a.: “... Íslensk tunga er upprunalegust norrænna tungumála og stendur næst fornnorrænu, því skyldi það ekki líka eiga við um tónlistina? ... Hvernig reynir maður að koma böndum yfir tónlist sem aldrei var í skilgreindum takti eða tóntegund, var síbreytileg, en bjó yfir alveg einstökum raddblæ eða þeli?” Fyrir áheyranda, virkar fiðluröddin stefnuföst, jafnvel með galgopalegar yfirlýsingar um að ríða á vaðið.

Gítarinn er oftast til í að bíta á agnið en maldar á stundum í móinn. Duo Concordia frumflutti verkið Gefjun í Sveaborg í Helsinki í Finnlandi 2000. Þorkell Sigurbjörnsson (1938–2013) var einnig bæði nemandi og síðar yfirkennari við Tónlistarskólann í Reykjavík. Hann var eitt framsæknasta, afkasta- og áhrifamesta tónskáld á Íslandi á sínum tíma. Þorkell fór í framhaldsnám bæði til Bandaríkjanna og Þýskalands. Sótti tíma allt frá Tanglewood til Darmstadt. Verk hans spanna vítt svið, allt frá trúarlegum kórverkum, kammerverkum, einleiks- og hljómsveitarverkum til ópera og raftónlistar. Kammerópera hans Grettir var frumflutt í Bayreuth í Bæjaralandi. Þorkell samdi Vapp að tilstuðlan Laufeyjar og Páls og sagði hann verkið minna sig á varfærnislegt vapp fugla, ef til

vill í leit að ormi. Verkið nær að skapa tímalausa náttúrustemmningu, sem hefst á nærgætnu plokki gítarsins við jarðbundið strok fiðlunnar, en samspilið magnast og breytist í glitvef. Tónskáldið notfærir sér eiginleika hvors hljóðfæris fyrir sig, sérstöðu þeirra og það sem er líkt, lætur þau bæði slá og strjúka strengi, plokka líkt og pizzicato fiðlunnar og slæða sér milli strengja með effektum sem auka litskrúðið.

Duo Concordia frumflutti verkið í Áskirkju 1993.

John A. Speight (f. 1945) fæddist í Englandi og lærði í Guildhall School of Music and Drama en einnig í einkatímum hjá Sir Richard Rodney Bennett. Hann flutti til Íslands 1972 og hefur búið þar og starfað síðan. Verk hans eru ótal mörg og spanna víðan völl, allt frá einleiksverkum til synfónískra. Þau hafa verið flutt á alþjóðavettvangi og unnið til margskonar verðlauna. Jólaóratoría hans hlaut Íslensku tónlistarverðlaunin 2003. John samdi Echoes of Orpheus (Bergmál Orfeusar) fyrir einleiksgítar 1986. Páll frumflutti verkið árið eftir á Musica Nova-tónleikum á vegum Tónskáldafélags Íslands en John tók við formennsku í því félagi 1992.

John segir um verk sitt Echoes of Orpheus að það byrji á góðu balli, fari síðan niður til Heljar þar sem

Orfeus kallar á Evridísi og endi með því að hann missir vitið. Trommueffektar á gítarinn og flaut og söngl flytjandans gæða verkið annarsheimavídd í þessari endursögn eða bergmáli af ferð Orfeusar til undirheimanna. Páll frumflutti verkið á Skerpluhátíð Musica Nova í Áskirkju 1987. John Speight segir um Samtvinna að það lýsi samstarfi tveggja listamanna. Stundum gangi allt vel en á öðrum stundum fari allt í háaloft. Báðir þrífast á núningnum. Þessi átakasaga hefst strax í upphafi verksins, yfirlýsingagleði á báða bóga. Þegar við höldum þá vera að sættast, brýst fram undirliggjandi spenna, ný hrina laumar sér upp á yfirborðið og allt fer í bál og brand aftur. Duo Concordia frumflutti verkið á Fuglasafni Sigurgeirs við Mývatn 2018.

íslenska raftónverkið 1960. Magnús Blöndal starfaði lengi hjá Ríkisútvarpinu og í leikhúsunum við tónlistarstjórnun. Fundum þeirra Laufeyjar bar fyrst saman í leikhúsinu á Akureyri og í framhaldinu samdi hann Sonorities VI fyrir hana. Líkt og Luciano Berio samdi röð einleiks Sequenzas samdi Magnús Blöndal nokkur Sonorities. Sonorities VI hefst á einni hvatvísri nótu, sem við síendurtekningu og í meðförum fiðluleikarans reynist bjargráð frá ódáinsakri. Laufey frumflutti verkið á Listahátíð í Reykjavík 1990.

Magnús Blöndal Jóhannsson (1925-2005) var einn af helstu frumkvöðlum á sviði íslenskrar nútímatónlistar. Hann nam við Julliard-skólann og hitti þar m.a. Varèse. Kynni Magnúsar af raftónlistinni í Köln, París og Varsjá upp úr 1950 höfðu mikil áhrif á feril hans. Hann samdi fyrsta

Laufey Sigurðardóttir og Páll Eyjólfsson hafa starfað saman frá árinu 1986. Þau hafa haldið tónleika víðs vegar um heimalandið sem og erlendis og upptökur á leik þeirra hafa verið gerðar fyrir útvarp og sjónvarp.

Geisladiskur með samleik þeirra var gefinn út í Reykjavík 1996. Á efnisskrá þeirra eru verk frá barokk-tímanum til okkar daga og íslensk tónskáld hafa samið verk fyrir þau sérstaklega.

Laufey Sigurðardóttiri (f. 1955) er fædd og uppalin í Reykjavík.

Hún lauk einleikaraprófi frá Tónlistarskólanum í Reykjavík árið 1974 og fór síðan til framhaldsnáms í Bandaríkjunum hjá prófessor George Neikrug. Þá sótti hún tíma í Róm og víðar í Evrópu m.a. hjá A. Grumiaux.

Laufey hefur komið fram sem einleikari og kammertónlistarmaður víða í Evrópu, Bandaríkjunum og Rússlandi og frumflutt fjölda verka sem samin hafa verið sérstaklega fyrir hana. Laufey sinnti kennslu við Tónlistarskólann í Reykjavík um árabil, er fastráðin hjá Sinfóníuhljómsveit Íslands og stofnandi hinnar árvissu tónlistarhátíðar Músík í Mývatnssveit.

Einnig hefur hún skipulagt árlega Mozart-tónleika í Reykjavík.

Páll Eyjólfsson (f. 1958) fæddist og ólst upp í Reykjavík.

Hann lauk prófi frá Gítarskóla Eyþórs Þorlákssonar 1981 og Tónlistarskólanum í Reykjavík. Hann lagði stund á frekara nám í Alcoy á Spáni hjá José Luís González nemanda Regino Sainz de la Maza í Madríd. Páll hefur sótt mörg masterclass-námskeið á Spáni og skipulagt nokkur á Íslandi.

Heimkominn hefur hann verið virkur bæði sem flytjandi og gítarkennari.

Ríkisútvarpið hefur tekið upp leik hans, meðal annars Konsert eftir John A. Speight með Sinfóníuhljómsveit Íslands. Páll hefur frumflutt og útsett fjölda verka fyrir gítarinn. Einleiksdiskur hans Cariño kom út í Reykjavík 2009.

DEU Alles begann 1986. Wir traten beide beim Nordic Music Days Festival in Reykjavík mit zwei verschiedenen Ensembles von Musikern des Reykjavík Chamber Orchestra auf. Nach dem Konzert haben wir uns unterhalten und darüber gesprochen, wie viel Spaß es machen würde, unsere Instrumente zu kombinieren und gemeinsam aufzutreten. Kurz darauf hatten wir die Gelegenheit, diese Idee zu verwirklichen, als wir gebeten wurden, bei der Eröffnung einer Kunstausstellung im Living Art Museum in Island aufzutreten. Damit begann eine herzliche und fruchtbare Zusammenarbeit, die bis heute sehr lebendig ist.

Seitdem gibt unser Duo Konzerte in ganz Island und im Ausland. Zu den vielen denkwürdigen Konzerten zählen das Round Tower in Kopenhagen, eine alte Kirche in Vilafamés in Spanien, Gøta auf den Färöern und Sveaborg in Helsinki, Finnland.

Neben unseren Konzerten hatten wir das Glück, dazu ausgewählt zu werden, Musik in vielen Grund- und Mittelschulen Islands bekanntzumachen und aufzuführen. Dafür mussten wir von einem Ort zum anderen reisen, in die entlegendsten Winkel unseres Landes, oft bei schwerem Winterwetter unter gefährlichen Bedingungen und über schneebedeckte Berge. Zum Beispiel blieb unser Auto stecken, und unsere besten italienischen Schuhe und unsere Notenständer mussten dazu herhalten, Schnee und Eis wegzuräumen. Einmal mussten wir sogar von einem Landwirt gerettet werden, der mit schwerer Ausrüstung anrückte, um uns herauszuschaufeln und die Straße für uns freizumachen. Diese unvorhersehbaren Fahrbedingungen führten zu einigen lustigen „Beinaheunfällen“, wie zum Beispiel, als wir die Fähre zur kleinen Insel Hrísey verpasst hatten und gleichzeitig mit dem Publikum den Konzertsaal betraten. Wir wurden auch gebeten, an mehreren Theaterproduktionen teilzunehmen, darunter am Nationaltheater von Island in Reykjavík. Durch all diese vielfältigen Erfahrungen hat sich unser Duo kontinuierlich weiterentwickelt.

Wir haben oft festgestellt, dass für diese Instrumentenkombination nicht viel Repertoire zur Verfügung stand. Aber dann fing Páll an zu arrangieren. Laufey suchte nach interessanten Stücken und Páll arrangierte sie für Violine und Gitarre. Anfangs handelte es sich hauptsächlich um Stücke aus der Barockzeit. Später fügten wir die klassische und romantische Ära hinzu.

1996 war es an der Zeit, ein Album mit Stücken von Corelli, Tartini und Paganini aufzunehmen. Pálls Arrangement der Sonatine von Tartini wurde auf diesem Album mit dem Titel Italian Music vorgestellt.

Der Dialog und die Zusammenarbeit mit Komponisten war schon immer Teil unserer Mission. Im Laufe der Jahre haben wir uns immer wieder an Komponisten wegen Musik für unsere Instrumentalkombination gewandt mit der Frage, ob sie vielleicht schon etwas hätten, das wir aufführen könnten, oder ob sie etwas Neues für uns schreiben könnten. Wir haben das Glück, dass die von uns angesprochenen Komponisten unserer Bitte mit großer Begeisterung nachgekommen sind.

Duo Concordia 18 18

Tryggvi M. Baldvinsson (geb.1965) studierte Komposition am Reykjavík College of Music und wurde dort später Leiter der Musiktheorie-Abteilung.

Seit 2014 ist er Dekan für Musik an der Iceland University of the Arts. Er studierte auch am Wiener Konservatorium und spezialisierte sich sowohl auf Komposition als auch auf den Kontrapunkt der Renaissance, eine Disziplin, die seinen eigenen Ansatz geprägt hat. Sein Schaffen reicht von TVMusik für düstere nordische Noir-Serien bis hin zu Stücken für den Konzertsaal. Er ist für den Icelandic Music Award 2020 mit dem Soundtrack der TV-Serie Flatey Enigma nominiert. Baldvinsson komponierte seine Sónata auf Wunsch des Duo Concordia und widmete das Werk teilweise einem lieben Freund der Familie, der kürzlich verstorben war. Das Duo Concordia hat 2006 die Sónata in der Kathedrale von Hólar, Island, uraufgeführt. Das Werk beginnt mit prägnanten Einsätzen von der Gitarre bis zur Geige. Danach entfalten die beiden Instrumente einen imitativen Dialog atonaler Motive, die auf den Einfluss des Serialismus hinweisen, der von der Wiener Schule und der Avantgarde Mitte des 20.

Jahrhunderts übernommen wurde. Im Gegensatz dazu ist die Elegia im Wesentlichen tonal, wobei die aufsteigenden Arpeggios der Gitarre die klagende Melodie der Geige unterstützen, während bei Momenten, in denen die Gitarre in den Vordergrund

tritt, der Satz intensiviert wird.

Hilmar Þórðarson (Thórdarson) (geb.1960) besuchte das Reykjavík College of Music, bevor er in die USA zog, wo er in Yale und am California Institute of the Arts studierte.

Anschließend wurde er Composer-in-Residence der Computermusikstudios in Stanford und Berkeley. Interaktive Computertechnologie ist zu einer Schlüsselkomponente von Thórdarsons Stil geworden und veranlasste ihn, das Kopavogur Computer Music Center und das New Music Technology an der Iceland University oft the Arts zu gründen. Thórdarsons Kompositionen wurden auf der ganzen Welt aufgeführt. Er komponierte Gefjun für das Duo Concordia unter Verwendung dessen, was das Duo „einen alten isländischen Notenfilz nennt, um einen einzigen Faden zu spinnen“. Der Name Gefjun bezieht sich auf eine nordische Göttin der Fruchtbarkeit, ist aber auch der Name einer Fabrik in Akureyri, Nordisland, in der Produkte aus Wolle hergestellt werden, so wie Thórdarsons Musik aus dem für Island einzigartigen Originalmaterial gesponnen wird. Thórdarsons Herangehensweise findet eine Parallele in der Forschung des Gelehrten Hreinn Steingrímsson, dessen Arbeit in einem von Dorothy Stone und Stephen L. Mosko herausgegebenen Band

beschrieben wird: „Die isländische Sprache ist die unverfälschteste moderne Sprache in Bezug auf Altnordisch, warum also nicht auch die Musik? …

Wie versucht man, Musik zu verstehen, die keine feste Tonhöhe hatte, sich ständig veränderte und eine völlig einzigartige Stimmqualität besaß?“ Diese Eigenschaft zeigt sich von Anfang an in den schallenden Passagen der Violine, die in ihrer spontanen Rhythmik rezitativ wirken und zwischen langatmigen Phrasen und schnellen, stotternden Ausbrüchen wechseln, welche oft mit der Gitarre gepaart werden und die Geigenstimme betonen oder kommentieren. Das Duo Concordia hat Gefjun im Jahr 2000 in Helsinki uraufgeführt.

sollen hier Vögel nachgeahmt werden, die zierlich über den Boden huschen, vielleicht auf der Suche nach Würmern. Das Stück strahlt eine zeitlose, pastorale Stimmung aus, die durch den einleitenden Pedalton der Geige erzeugt wird, um den die Gitarre zarte Muster nachzeichnet. Sigurbjörnsson nutzt die klanglichen Ähnlichkeiten zwischen den Instrumenten während der Pizzicato-Passagen der Violine aus, stellt in anderen Momenten eine nachahmende Beziehung zwischen den beiden her oder verwendet schwebende Portamento-Effekte auf der Violine, um mehr Farbe hinzuzufügen. Vapp wurde 1993 vom Duo Concordia in der Kirche von Áskirkja in Reykjavík uraufgeführt.

Þorkell (Thorkell) Sigurbjörnsson (1938-2013) war auch Alumnus des Reykjavik College of Music, zuerst als Student, später als Lehrer und Ordinarius. Er setzte seine Ausbildung in den USA fort und besuchte Meisterkurse in Tanglewood und Darmstadt. Er wurde einer der fortschrittlichsten, einflussreichsten und produktivsten Komponisten Islands seiner Generation. Sein umfangreiches Schaffen umfasste geistliche Chormusik, Oper, Konzerte, Elektronik, Orchester- und Kammermusik.

Seine Kammeroper Grettir wurde in Bayreuth uraufgeführt. Sigurbjörnsson komponierte Vapp für das Duo Concordia. Laut dem Komponisten

Der englische Komponist John A. Speight (geb.1945) studierte an der Guildhall School of Music and Drama und privat bei Sir Richard Rodney Bennett. Speight zog 1972 nach Island und ist seitdem dort ansässig. Er produzierte eine Reihe von Werken, die die gesamte Bandbreite der Genres abdecken, von Solo- bis hin zu Orchesterwerken.

Seine Musik wird überall aufgeführt und hat zahlreiche Preise gewonnen, darunter den Icelandic Music Award 2003 für sein Christmas Oratorio.

Speight komponierte 1986 Echoes of Orpheus für Sologitarre. Das Stück wurde 1987 von Páll Eyjólfsson in der Kirche von Áskirkja bei einer

von der isländischen Komponistenvereinigung organisierten Veranstaltung der Musica Nova uraufgeführt, von welcher Speight 1992 Vorsitzender wurde. Speight beschrieb Echoes of Orpheus wie den Beginn eines Balles oder einer großen Party, an deren Ende Orpheus zum Hades hinabsteigt, um nach Euridice zu suchen, wobei er letztendlich den Verstand verliert. Perkussive Gitarren- und Stimmeffekte wie Pfeifen schaffen eine unheimliche, jenseitige Atmosphäre in dieser fantasievollen Nacherzählung des Orpheus-Mythos.

Von Samtvinna hat Speight gesagt, dass es um die Interaktion zwischen zwei Protagonisten geht, die manchmal miteinander kämpfen, jedoch durch den Konflikt angeregt und beflügelt werden. Diese kämpferische Atmosphäre zeigt sich von Anfang an mit kraftvollen Einsätzen auf beiden Instrumenten, bevor sich der anfängliche Streit abschwächt und in einen subtileren Dialog übergeht, wobei jedoch eine unterschwellige Spannung die ganze Zeit unter der Oberfläche weitersiedet. Speight komponierte Samtvinna 2013 für das Duo Concordia. Es wurde 2018 am Sigurgeir’s Bird Museum by Lake Myvatn uraufgeführt.

Jóhannsson

(1925-2005)

war eine Schlüsselfigur in der Entwicklung der isländischen Musik, insbesondere in der Mitte des 20. Jahrhunderts. Er studierte an der Juilliard School und begegnete unter anderem Varèse. In den 1950er Jahren befasste er sich in den Studios von Köln, Warschau und Paris mit elektronischer Musik, was sich als Wendepunkt in seinem eigenen Schaffen herausstellen würde. 1960 schrieb er Islands erstes klassisches elektronisches Werk. Jóhannsson arbeitete ausgiebig beim isländischen Rundfunk und Theater, insbesondere als Dirigent und Korrepetitor am Nationaltheater.

Jóhannsson und Laufey lernten sich während der Zusammenarbeit im Theater kennen und kurz darauf komponierte er Sonorities VI für sie. So wie Luciano Berio eine Reihe von Solo-Sequenzas schrieb, schrieb Jóhannsson eine Anzahl von Sonorities. Das Werk beginnt mit einem einzelnen, unruhig wiederholten Ton, nach dem uns die Geige in einen komplizierten Monolog zieht, der gelegentlich vom anfänglichen Motiv unterstrichen wird. Laufey Sigurðardóttir hat dieses Werk 1990 beim Reykjavík Arts Festival uraufgeführt.

Laufey Sigurðardóttir (geb. 1955) wurde in Reykjavík, Island, geboren und wuchs auch dort auf. Sie absolvierte 1974 das Reykjavík College of Music und studierte in den USA bei Professor George Neikrug.

Später nahm sie Unterricht in Rom und in anderen europäischen Städten, so wie bei Arthur Grumiaux in Belgien. Laufey trat als Solistin und Kammermusikerin in Europa, Russland und den USA auf und hat eine Reihe von Stücken uraufgeführt, die speziell für sie geschrieben wurden. Laufey ist ständiges Mitglied des Icelandic Symphony Orchestra. Sie unterrichtet seit Jahrzehnten Violine am Reykjavík College of Music. Sie ist die Gründerin des Festivals Music at Lake Myvatn und hat es von Anfang an geleitet.

Seit 1997 organisiert sie eine Mozart Concert Series in Reykjavík.

Páll Eyjólfsson (geb. 1958) wurde in Reykjavík, Island, geboren und wuchs dort auf. 1981 machte er seinen Hochschulabschluss an der Eythor Thorlaksson Guitar School und am Reykjavík College of Music. Er studierte weiter in Alcoy in Spanien bei José Luís González, einem Schüler von Regino Sainz de la Maza in Madrid. Seit seiner Rückkehr nach Island ist er sowohl als Interpret als auch als Gitarrenlehrer tätig. Die Icelandic National Broadcasting Company hat ihn oft aufgenommen, darunter mit John A. Speights Konzert und dem Iceland Symphony Orchestra.

Páll hat viele Meisterkurse in Spanien besucht und mehrere in Island organisiert. Zudem hat er zahlreiche Stücke für sein Instrument arrangiert und uraufgeführt. Sein Soloalbum Cariño wurde 2009 in Reykjavík veröffentlicht.

Laufey Sigurðardóttir und Páll Eyjólfsson arbeiten seit 1986 als Duo für Violine und Gitarre zusammen.
