ENG We performed Schubert’s Piano Trio No. 2 during our first ever rehearsal together. All three of us love Schubert, and to explore the challenges his music presents has involved a great sense of responsibility, and the need to make our three personalities “compatible” whilst playing music of purity and introspection; music that has no equal.

The image of the composer’s shy and humble personality, intent on composing these two trios with a perfect and transparent sense of balance in the last period of his life, convinced us to adopt an interpretation in which technical virtuosity is never an end in itself, but always punctuates a continual, expressive rendering of the score.

Schubert himself was appreciative when, after the completion of his compositions, he received positive comments: “... several people assured me that under my fingers the keys began to sing. If this is sincere, it makes me very happy since I cannot stand the wretched hammering which is typical of even excellent pianists, as it pleases neither the ear nor the heart!” (letter to his parents, 25 July 1825).

The strict observance of the prescribed tempi, together with an analysis of every aspect of the music, allowed us to choose the proper performance pace in order to maintain a constant rhythmic pulse suitable for supporting the musical architecture of these two great works. Above all, this allowed us to let every expressive detail enjoy its correct significance in the overall scheme of the works, tallying precisely with Schubert’s dynamics. They often arrive at the characteristic fortissimi of the composer’s climaxes, which alternate with sonorities on the cusp of audibility, allowing us to penetrate the composer’s melancholy, sadness, celestial serenity, or the euphoric vigour of some of the longer passages.

Furthermore, Schubert’s well-known “feeling” towards Nature, including human nature, unites us. Attention and respect for detail is an integral part of our individual lives, and they are possible only by keeping to routines that are appropriate to this quest for truth; not a distinguishing trait of our times. The Trio MezzenaPatria-Ballario wants to be an ambassador for this mission of authenticity, and for sincere respect towards these goals, through the towering music of outstanding composers such as, in this case, Franz Schubert.

Franz Schubert (1797-1828) had become ill with symptoms of syphilis in 1822-3, and, although he experienced periods of better health, it would have become apparent that his life was in a fragile state. As a consequence, many of Schubert’s late works exude an inevitable solemnity. Yet, even as he worked on Winterreise, Schubert was able to produce his two Piano Trios, the lyricism and joie de vivre of which recall the exuberance of earlier works. Benjamin Britten encapsulated Schubert’s late style with words that, although originally intended for the String Quintet in C of 1828, could just as easily apply to the Piano Trios: “ ... as the beauties unfold one after another ... the overwhelming impression is of the wholeness of the music. Schubert’s effortless spontaneity is not only the result of his rapid and ‘instinctive’ writing; it is also the result of his miraculously mature understanding of form ... ” The exact date of the B-flat major Piano Trio, D. 898 is uncertain. No manuscript of the work survives, and Schubert did not mention it in his correspondence with publishers. However, evidence suggests that it was written a little before the E-flat major Piano Trio, D. 929, the autograph of which is dated November 1827. When Schubert embarked on his B-flat Piano Trio, it was some 15 years since his last attempt at writing for this combination. Also in B-flat major, the early work was a one-movement student composition, D. 28, written when the 15-year-old Schubert was a pupil of Antonio Salieri, who declared that his young

student could “do everything” because he was “a genius”.

Schubert’s more substantial Piano Trios D. 898 and D. 929 filled a gap in piano trio writing that had lain open since Beethoven’s ‘Archduke’ Trio of 1811.

Like Beethoven, Schubert treats the instruments equally, but his own style is unmistakable, especially in the use of the piano’s left and right hands playing in octaves. The Piano Trio No. 1 in B-flat major, D. 898, was first performed at a private concert on 28 January 1828 in Vienna, and was published in 1836, well after Schubert’s death.

The work opens with a sunny Allegro, its joyous main theme explored by all three instruments. The cello introduces a shapely secondary melody, and in the central development section both themes are treated to the deft, magical harmonic excursions so characteristic of Schubert’s mature style. The remote keys continue even into the reprise of the main material: Schubert only returns the movement to its home key of B flat when the piano restates the first theme.

In the exquisite Andante, a lullaby melody is played by each instrument in a gently overlapping texture, before undergoing similar tonal journeys to those of the first movement. This slow movement was something of an afterthought, supplanting an Adagio that has since taken on a life of its own as Schubert’s Notturno in E-flat major, D. 897. The first four bars of the Scherzo are essentially an inversion of the opening of the ‘Trout’ Quintet’s Scherzo. The movement unfolds with witty exchanges between the instruments and a debonair Trio section.

The finale is described as a Rondo, but includes elements of variation, with the elegant main theme undergoing significant alteration each time it returns. The theme is contrasted with bold unison statements, before Schubert reworks this material from 2/4 into 3/2 time, introducing a polonaise (Polish dance) complete with rustic drone. The rondo theme itself resembles that of Schubert’s song of 1815, Skolie, D. 306, which, poignantly, includes these words: “take delight in the brief life of the flower before its fragrance disappears”. Robert Schumann described the B-flat major Trio as “kind, trusting, pure”, but also praised it for its refreshing qualities, arguing that, with one glance at the work: “the troubles of our human existence disappear and all the world is fresh and bright again.”

Schubert’s Piano Trio No. 2 in E-flat major, D. 929 was composed in the autumn of 1827 and completed in November, published posthumously in October 1828. It was premiered on 26 December 1827 at the Musikverein in Vienna by violinist Ignaz Schuppanzigh and cellist Joseph Linke (both of whom had given premieres of some of Beethoven’s string quartets) and pianist Carl Maria von Bocklet (to whom Schubert had dedicated his Piano Sonata in D, D. 850, in 1825).

It seems likely that Schubert preferred the E-flat major Trio to its predecessor, as he chose it to be the centrepiece of the only public concert devoted entirely to his music to take place in his lifetime, on 26 March 1828, also at the Musikverein and played by the same performers. A fortnight later, Schubert wrote to the work’s publisher, Probst of

Leipzig, that the “trio for pianoforte, violin, and violoncello in particular found general approval, so much so, indeed, that I have been invited to give a second concert (rather as a repeat performance)”.

This further performance does not seem to have taken place, but when Probst issued the work in Leipzig it became the only piece by Schubert to be published outside Vienna during his lifetime.

Robert Schumann compared the work favourably with the Piano Trio No. 1, praising the E-flat major Trio’s “more spirited, masculine and dramatic tone”. Both Schubert and Schumann reflected contemporary opinion in their preference for the later piece: the intellectual rigours of the Trio No. 2 were at first more popular, although the airy, graceful Trio No. 1 has since become the more frequently performed work. The E-flat major Trio is the more daunting to perform on account of its generous length, with several repeated sections and a long finale that Schubert himself cut down considerably.

The main material of the first movement comes from its unison opening statement, an answering statement on the cello, and a gentler secondary theme introduced by the strings. These ideas unfold over the course of an expansive movement characterised by striking harmonic contrasts and inexorable forward motion. In the song-like slow movement, the cello sings the main theme to the piano’s staccato accompaniment. The inspiration for this tune has an interesting history: in 1978 the musicologist Manfred Willfort unearthed a Swedish song called Se solen sjunker – The Sun has Set 5 5

which Schubert had heard in 1827, sung by the tenor Isaak Albert Berg in Vienna. The song had sunk into obscurity, but we know that Schubert was influenced by its melody from the account of his friend, Leopold Sonnleithner; when Willfort rediscovered the song it was possible at last to confirm the link. Schubert does not directly copy the song, but key aspects of both its melody and the accompaniment find their way into the Trio’s second movement. There is also a secondary theme derived from the melody’s wide-leaping figure.

In contrast with these expansive movements, the Scherzo uses tautly-constructed canonical devices and imitative textures. The lightness of the Scherzo is then answered by the Trio’s earthy,

rustic peasant dance. The finale begins with an innocent insouciance that gives no hint of the vast movement ahead. Schubert takes us on an epic journey through an array of key areas, before the developmental section offers up a tribute to the slow movement, recalling its song, which reappears on the cello. After more harmonic twists and turns the cello’s song returns again in the tonic minor, and from there to the home key is but a step, Schubert celebrating his conclusion with pomp and swagger.

Schubert wrote to Probst on 1 August 1828: “This work will not be dedicated to any one person, but rather to all who find pleasure in it. That is the most profitable form of dedication.”

It was entirely natural that, when Franco, Sergio and Elena met and started the adventure of playing together in a trio, they should feel an immediate musical empathy; in the careers of these three musicians, chamber music has played a constant and important role.

Franco Mezzena is known all over the world as a solo violinist. For many years he honed his chamber music skills in a duo with his father, the great pianist Bruno Mezzena.

Franco has recorded more than 70 CDs with a number of famous artists, dedicating himself not only to the standard classical repertoire but also to compositions in a range of styles.

Sergio Patria taught from 1977 to 2007 at the Conservatoire of Turin, a city in which he also held the position of first cello at the Teatro Regio between 1974 and 1999. As a soloist and chamber musician in various chamber groups he has devoted most of his energies to the duo and trio repertoire, since 1988 with the pianist and his partner, Elena Ballario, concert artist, composer and teacher at the Conservatoire of Turin.

In 2017 the couple celebrated 30 years of performing together, often in major Italian and European concert series, playing both the standard classical repertoire and original, unpublished compositions or transcriptions made specifically by Elena Ballario and performed exclusively by the duo.

The three artists have known each other by reputation for many years, but their artistic association began in 2015 as a natural consequence of mutual long-distance esteem. Franco’s precision and rigour on the violin, combined with Sergio’s innate expressiveness and Elena’s musical balance, are the three main characteristics that make this trio complete; perhaps inevitably, the scores they choose to perform together meet with unanimous approval. The first rehearsal of the Mezzena-Patria-Ballario Trio included a play-through of the Piano Trio No. 2 by Franz Schubert, a piece for which the three artists feel a particular passion and with which their interpretative affinity manifested itself immediately. Following this, their concert activity led them to performances of the standard trio repertoire, including recordings of Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninov, but also rare performances and recordings of music such as the trios by Ermanno Wolf Ferrari and Alberic Magnard.

DEU Wir haben Schuberts Klaviertrio Nr. 2 während unserer ersten gemeinsamen Probe gespielt. Alle drei lieben wir Schubert, und um die Herausforderungen zu erkunden, die seine Musik an uns stellt, erforderte es von uns ein großes Verantwortungsbewusstsein und die Notwendigkeit, unsere drei Persönlichkeiten „kompatibel“ zu machen für diese Musik von einer Reinheit und Introspektion, die Ihresgleichen sucht.

Das Bild der schüchternen und bescheidenen Persönlichkeit des Komponisten, der in der letzten Phase seines Lebens diese beiden Trios mit einem perfekten und transparenten Gleichgewichtssinn zu komponieren suchte, überzeugte uns, eine Interpretation anzuwenden, in der technische Virtuosität nie Selbstzweck ist, sondern immer eine kontinuierliche, ausdrucksstarke Wiedergabe der Partitur unterstreicht. Schubert selbst war dankbar, als er nach der Fertigstellung seiner Kompositionen positive Kommentare erhielt: „... indem mich einige versicherten, daß die Tasten unter meinen Händen zu singenden Stimmen würden, welches, wenn es wahr ist, mich sehr freut, weil ich das vermaledeite Hacken, welches auch ausgezeichneten Clavierspielern eigen ist, nicht ausstehen kann, indem es weder das Ohr noch das Gemüth ergötzt!“ (Brief an seine Eltern, 25. Juli 1825).

Die strikte Einhaltung der vorgeschriebenen Tempi sowie eine Analyse aller Aspekte dieser Musik ermöglichten es uns, das Aufführungstempo zu wählen, um einen konstanten Puls aufrechtzuerhalten, der zur Unterstützung der musikalischen Architektur dieser beiden großen Werke geeignet war. Dies erlaubte uns vor allem, so zu spielen, dass jedes ausdrucksstarke Detail seine korrekte Bedeutung im Gesamtschema der Werke erhielt und somit genau mit Schuberts dynamischen Angaben übereinstimmte.

Sie erreichen oft die charakteristischen Fortissimi der kompositorischen Höhepunkte, die sich mit Klängen an der Grenze der Hörbarkeit abwechseln, um so die Melancholie, Traurigkeit und himmlische Gelassenheit des Komponisten oder die euphorische Kraft einiger längerer Passagen zu durchdringen.

Darüber hinaus fühlen wir uns dem bekannten Schubertschen „Gefühl“ gegenüber der Natur – einschließlich der menschlichen – sehr nahe. Aufmerksamkeit und Liebe zum Detail sind wesentliche Bestandteile unseres individuellen Lebens, und sie sind nur möglich, wenn wir an der Routine festhalten, die dieser Suche nach Wahrhaftigkeit angemessen ist (kein ausgesprochenes Merkmal unserer Zeit). Das Trio Mezzena-PatriaBallario möchte Botschafter dieser Mission der Authentizität und der aufrichtigen Einhaltung dieser Ziele sein, und zwar durch die großartige Musik herausragender Komponisten wie in diesem Fall Franz Schubert.

Franz Schubert (1797-1828) war 1822/23 an Symptomen der Syphilis erkrankt, und obwohl es ihm gesundheitlich zeitweilig besser ging, befand er sich offenkundig in einem fragilen Zustand.

Infolgedessen strahlen viele von Schuberts späten Werken naturgegeben eine gewisse Feierlichkeit aus. Benjamin Britten fasste Schuberts späten Stil mit Worten zusammen, die, obwohl ursprünglich für das Streichquintett in C von 1828 gedacht, genauso gut für die Klaviertrios gelten könnten: „ ... während sich die Schönheit nach und nach entfaltet ... ist der überwältigende Eindruck die Ganzheit der Musik. Schuberts mühelose Spontaneität ist nicht nur das Ergebnis seines schnellen und instinktiven Schreibens; es ist auch die Folge seines auf wundersame Weise ausgereiften Formverständnisses ... ” Das genaue Datum der Entstehung des B-DurKlaviertrios D. 898 ist ungewiss. Kein Manuskript des Werkes ist erhalten, und Schubert erwähnte es in seiner Korrespondenz mit den Verlagen nicht.

Es gibt jedoch Hinweise darauf, dass es kurz vor dem Es-Dur-Klaviertrio D. 929 geschrieben wurde, dessen Originalschrift auf den November 1827 datiert ist. Als Schubert sein B-Klaviertrio in Angriff nahm, waren etwa 15 Jahre seit seinem letzten Versuch für diese Besetzung zu schreiben, vergangen. Ebenfalls in B-Dur war das frühe Werk D. 28 aus seiner Studienzeit in einem Satz

geschrieben, als der 15-jährige Schubert ein Schüler von Antonio Salieri war, der erklärte, sein junger Student könne „alles“, weil er ein „Genie“ sei.

Schuberts umfangreichere Klaviertrios D. 898 und D. 929 füllten eine Lücke in der Komposition für Klaviertrio, die seit Beethovens ‘Erzherzog-Trio’ von 1811 offenstand. Wie Beethoven behandelt Schubert die Instrumente gleich, aber sein eigener Stil ist unverkennbar, insbesondere beim Oktavspiel der linken und rechten Hand. Das Klaviertrio Nr. 1 in B-Dur, D. 898, wurde erstmals am 28. Januar 1828 in Wien bei einem Privatkonzert aufgeführt und erschien erst 1836, lange nach Schuberts Tod. Das Werk beginnt mit einem sonnigen Allegro, dessen fröhliches Hauptthema von allen drei Instrumenten ausgeleuchtet wird. Das Cello führt eine formschöne Sekundärmelodie ein, und in der zentralen Durchführung werden beide Themen mit dem für Schubert so charakteristischen ausgereiften Stil mit bezaubernden harmonischen Exkursen behandelt. Die weit entfernten Tonarten begegnen sich auch in der Reprise des Hauptmaterials: Schubert führt den Satz nur dann zu seiner Grundtonart B-Dur zurück, wenn das Klavier das erste Thema wiederholt.

Im exquisiten Andante wird von jedem Instrument eine Wiegenliedmelodie in einer sanft überlappenden Textur gespielt, bevor ähnliche klangliche Abstecher wie im ersten Satz unternommen werden. Dieser langsame Satz war ein nachträglicher Einfall und verdrängte ein Adagio, das seitdem als Schuberts Notturno in Es-Dur, D. 897 bekannt geworden ist.

Die ersten vier Takte sind im Wesentlichen eine Umkehrung der Einführung des Scherzos aus dem Forellenquintett. Der Satz entfaltet sich mit einem launigen Austausch zwischen den Instrumenten und einem anmutigen Trio.

Das Finale wird als Rondo beschrieben, enthält jedoch Elemente der Variation, wobei das elegante Hauptthema bei jeder Rückkehr erheblich verändert wird. Dem Thema stehen kühne Unisono-Passagen gegenüber, bevor Schubert dieses Material im 2/4Takt in 3/2-Takt umwandelt, überarbeitet und eine Polonaise (polnischer Tanz) mit rustikalem Bordun erscheint. Das Rondo-Thema selbst ähnelt dem aus Schuberts Lied Skolie, D. 306 von 1815, das die berührenden Worte enthält: „Laßt im Morgenstrahl des May’n uns der Blume Leben freun, eh’ ihr Duft entweichet“! Robert Schumann beschrieb das B-Dur-Trio als „anmuthig, vertrauend, jungfräulich“, lobte es aber auch für seine erfrischenden Eigenschaften und argumentierte mit einem Blick auf das Werk: „Ein Blick auf das Trio B-Dur und das erbärmliche Menschentreiben flieht zurück, und die Welt glänzt wieder frisch“.

Schuberts Klaviertrio Nr. 2 in Es-Dur, D. 929 wurde im Herbst 1827 komponiert, im November fertiggestellt und posthum im Oktober 1828 veröffentlicht. Erstmalig wurde es am 26.

Dezember 1827 im Wiener Musikverein von dem Geiger Ignaz Schuppanzigh und dem Cellisten Joseph Linke gespielt (beide hatten bereits einige Streichquartette von Beethoven uraufgeführt) sowie von dem Pianisten Carl Maria von Bocklet

(dem Schubert 1825 seine Klaviersonate in D, D. 850 gewidmet hatte).

Es ist anzunehmen, dass Schubert das Es-DurTrio seinem Vorgänger vorzog, da er es zum Mittelpunkt des einzigen öffentlichen Konzerts zu seinen Lebzeiten machte, das ausschließlich seiner Musik gewidmet war. Es fand am 26. März 1828 ebenfalls im Wiener Musikverein statt und wurde von den gleichen Interpreten gespielt. 14 Tage später schrieb Schubert an den Leipziger Werkverlag Probst, dass insbesondere das „Trio für Pianoforte, Violine und Violoncello allgemeine Zustimmung gefunden hat, so dass ich in der Tat zu einem zweiten Konzert eingeladen wurde (anstatt es zu wiederholen)“. Diese weitere Aufführung scheint nicht stattgefunden zu haben, aber als Probst das Werk in Leipzig herausgab, war es das einzige Stück von Schubert, das außerhalb Wiens zu seinen Lebzeiten veröffentlicht wurde.

Robert Schumann verglich das Werk mit dem Klaviertrio Nr. 1 und lobte den „mehr handelnden, männlichen und dramatischen Ton des Es-DurTrios“. Sowohl Schubert als auch Schumann spiegelten die zeitgenössische Meinung in ihrer Präferenz für das spätere Stück wider: Die intellektuelle Stringenz des Trios Nr. 2 war zunächst beliebter, obwohl das luftige, anmutige Trio Nr. 1 mittlerweile das am häufigsten gespielte Werk ist. Das Es-Dur-Trio wirkt aufgrund seiner ausgedehnten Länge mit mehreren wiederholten Abschnitten und einem langen Finale, das Schubert selbst erheblich gekürzt hat, eher entmutigend.

Das Hauptmaterial des ersten Satzes besteht aus Unisoni, einer Gegenstimme des Cellos und einem sanfteren, durch die beiden Streichinstrumente eingeführten zweiten Thema. Diese Ideen entfalten sich im Verlauf eines expansiven Satzes, der sich durch auffällige harmonische Kontraste und einen unaufhaltsamen Vorwärtsdrang auszeichnet.

Im liedhaften langsamen Satz spielt das Cello das Hauptthema zur Stakkato-Begleitung des Klaviers. Die Inspiration für diese Melodie hat eine interessante Geschichte: 1978 entdeckte der Musikwissenschaftler Manfred Willfort ein schwedisches Lied namens Se solen sjunker Sonnenuntergang, das Schubert 1827 gehört hatte und das vom Tenor Isaak Albert Berg in Wien gesungen wurde. Das Lied war in Vergessenheit geraten, aber wir wissen aus dem Bericht seines Freundes Leopold Sonnleithner, dass Schubert von diesem Lied beeinflusst worden war. Als Willfort das Lied wiederentdeckte, war es endlich möglich, diese Verbindung zu bestätigen. Schubert kopiert das Lied nicht direkt, aber wesentliche Aspekte sowohl der Melodie als auch der Begleitung finden Eingang in den zweiten Satz des Trios. Es gibt auch ein sekundäres Thema, das von der Melodie mit den weiten Sprüngen abgeleitet ist.

Im Gegensatz zu diesen expansiven Sätzen verwendet das Scherzo straff konstruierte kanonische Texturen und Imitationen. Die Leichtigkeit des Scherzos wird dann vom erdigen, rustikalen Bauerntanz des Trios beantwortet. Das Finale beginnt mit einer naiven Unbekümmertheit, die keinen Hinweis auf den bevorstehenden überwältigenden Satz gibt. Schubert nimmt uns mit auf eine epische Reise durch eine Reihe von Tonarten, bevor die Durchführung dem langsamen Satz eine Hommage zollt und an sein Lied erinnert, das mit dem Cello wieder auftaucht. Nach weiteren harmonischen Wendungen kehrt die Cello-Melodie in Moll wieder zurück, und von dort ist der Weg zur Grundtonart nur noch ein Schritt. Schubert zelebriert seinen Abschluss mit Pomp und Prachtentfaltung.

Schubert schrieb am 1. August 1828 an Probst: „Dedicirt wird dieses Werk Niemandem außer jenen, die Gefallen daran finden“.

Mit seinem Vater,avevo dem großen Pianisten numerose controindicazioni me lo sconsiglierebbero. Insegno musica al pianoforte da quando 37 anni, Bruno Mezzena, vertiefte er jahrelang sein perché credo sia possibile farlo seriamente. Non mi chiamate pianista, preferisco il termine “musicista”: con kammermusikalisches Können im Duo. Franco il primo si pensa alle mani, con il secondo al cuore e al cervello. La cosa più bella che possa capitarmi è hat mehrè als 70 CDs mit einer berühmter incontrare persone che ricordano un mio concerto di 40 anni fa: qualcosa rimasto, dunque.

NonReihe intendo Künstler aufgenommen und sich nicht nur dem considerare la mia carriera terminata, credo invece che il meglio debba ancora arrivare e lavoro affinché ciò klassischen Standardrepertoire, sondern auch avvenga.

Kompositionen in verschiedenen Stilrichtungen gewidmet.

Oltre alla musica mi bastano pochissime cose: la mia famiglia, la lettura di tanti libri, le belle arti, le passeggiate nei boschi. Sono un discreto micologo e non ho mai avvelenato nessuno con i funghi. Ho dovuto arrendermi al computer, ma non possiedo un tablet.

Sergio Patria unterrichtete von 1977 bis 2007 am Konservatorium von Turin, einer Stadt, in der er zwischen 1974 und 1999 auch die Position des ersten Cellisten am Teatro Regio innehatte.

Als Solist und Kammermusiker in verschiedenen Gruppen verwandte er seine größte Energie auf das Duo- und Trio-Repertoire; seit 1988 zusammen mit seiner Partnerin Elena Ballario, der Konzertpianistin, Komponistin und Lehrerin am Konservatorium von Turin. 2017 feierte das Paar 30 Jahre gemeinsames Auftreten, oft in großen italienischen und europäischen Konzertreihen, wobei es sowohl das klassische Standardrepertoire als auch originale, unveröffentlichte Kompositionen oder Transkriptionen spielte, die speziell von Elena Ballario arrangiert und ausschließlich vom Duo aufgeführt wurden.

Die drei Musiker kannten sich vom Namen her schon seit vielen Jahren, doch ihre künstlerische Vereinigung begann im Jahr 2015 als natürliche Folge der gegenseitigen Wertschätzung aus der Ferne. Francos Präzision und Genauigkeit auf der Violine, kombiniert mit Sergios angeborener Ausdruckskraft und Elenas musikalischer Ausgewogenheit sind die drei Hauptmerkmale, die dieses Trio perfekt machen. So werden auch die Partituren, die sie gemeinsam aufführen, stets einstimmig angenommen. Bei der ersten Probe des Mezzena-PatriaBallario-Trios spielten sie Franz Schuberts Klaviertrio Nr. 2 in einem Durchlauf, das die drei Künstler besonders lieben und in dem ihre Interpretationsaffinität deutlich zum Ausdruck kommt. In der Folge führte ihre Konzerttätigkeit zu Aufführungen des Standard-Trio-Repertoires und Aufnahmen von Tschaikowsky und Rachmaninow, aber auch von selten gespielten und aufgenommenen Stücken wie die Trios von Ermanno Wolf Ferrari und Alberic Magnard.

ITA La nostra prima prova insieme è avvenuta con l’esecuzione del Trio op. 100 di Schubert; tutti e tre amiamo Schubert, e sfidarne la difficoltà musicale ha comportato un grande senso di responsabilità e la necessità di rendere le nostre tre personalità “compatibili” con una musica di una purezza ed una interiorità che non hanno eguali.

L’immagine della personalità schiva e umile di Schubert intento a comporre nell’ultimo periodo della sua vita questi due trii con un equilibrio perfetto e trasparente, ci ha convinti ad adottare un’interpretazione in cui il virtuosismo tecnico non è mai fine a se stesso, ma sempre inserito nell’ambito in una costante resa espressiva del testo.

Egli apprezzava quando, dopo l’esecuzione delle sue stesse composizioni, riceveva consensi positivi: “… molte persone mi hanno assicurato che sotto le mie dita i tasti si trasformavano in voci che cantavano, il che, se vero, mi fa molto piacere poiché non posso sopportare quel modo di martellare lo strumento, presente anche in pianisti di prim’ordine, sgradito sia all’orecchio che al cuore.” (lettera ai genitori del 25 luglio 1825).

La rigida osservanza dei tempi indicati, insieme all’analisi della scrittura sotto ogni aspetto, ci ha consentito la scelta delle velocità d’esecuzione al fine di mantenere una pulsazione ritmica costante a sostegno dell’architettura musicale di queste due grandi opere. Soprattutto, ci ha permesso di lasciare che ogni particolare espressivo avesse l’adeguato significato nell’insieme complessivo dell’opera, con il rispetto delle esatte dinamiche di Schubert che toccano spesso i tipici fortissimi dei punti culmine, alternate a sonorità in punta di piedi, concedendoci di penetrare la malinconia, la tristezza, la serenità celestiale o il vigore euforico di alcuni dei suoi passaggi più lunghi.

Inoltre il noto “sentire” di Schubert nei confronti della Natura, compresa quella umana ci accomuna: l’ attenzione e rispetto per i dettagli sono parte integrante delle nostre vite individuali, e ciò è possibile solo mantenendo routine consone a questa ricerca della verità, caratteristica davvero poco distintiva dei nostri tempi; il Trio Mezzena-Patria-Ballario vuole farsi portavoce di questa missione di autenticità e di sincero rispetto verso queste mete attraverso la Musica eccelsa di compositori, come in questo caso, Franz Schubert.

Franz Schubert (1797-1828) si ammalò di sifilide nel 1822-3 e, sebbene periodicamente il suo stato di salute sembrasse migliorare, la sua vita appariva, ormai, chiaramente minata. Di conseguenza, un’inevitabile solennità emerge da molte delle sue ultime opere. Eppure, pur continuando a lavorare al Winterreise, Schubert riuscì anche a comporre i suoi due Trii per pianoforte, caratterizzati da un lirismo e da una joie de vivre che ricordano l’esuberanza delle prime opere. Benjamin Britten sintetizzò lo stile degli ultimi lavori di Schubert con parole che, sebbene originariamente pensate per il Quintetto per archi in Do del 1828, possono ugualmente definire i Trii per Pianoforte: “ ... come delle meraviglie che si svelano una dopo l’altra ... si è sopraffatti dalla totalità della musica. La semplice spontaneità di Schubert non è solo il risultato della sua scrittura rapida e “istintiva”; è anche il risultato della sua concezione così incredibilmente matura della forma ... ” La data esatta del Trio per pianoforte in Si bemolle maggiore D. 898 è incerta. Nessun manoscritto dell’opera è giunto sino a noi e Schubert non lo ha mai menzionato nella sua corrispondenza con gli editori. Tuttavia, si può ragionevolmente supporre che sia stato scritto poco prima del Trio per Pianoforte in Mi bemolle maggiore D. 929, il cui manoscritto autografo è datato novembre 1827. Quando Schubert iniziò a comporre il suo Trio per pianoforte in Mi, circa 15 anni erano trascorsi dall’ultima volta in cui aveva tentato di scrivere qualcosa usando questa combinazione.

In Si bemolle maggiore, troviamo tra le sue prime opere una composizione in un unico movimento, D. 28, scritta all’epoca in cui il quindicenne Schubert era allievo di Antonio Salieri, il quale dichiarò che il suo giovane studente avrebbe potuto “fare qualunque cosa”, perché era “un genio”.

I più corposi Trii per pianoforte D. 898 e D. 929 di Schubert andarono a colmare una lacuna considerevole nella loro composizione, rimasta aperta dal 1811, anno in cui Beethoven scrisse il Trio ‘dell’Arciduca’. Come Beethoven, Schubert tratta tutti gli strumenti allo stesso modo, ma il suo stile è inconfondibile, specialmente nell’uso della mano sinistra e destra del pianoforte che suonano in ottave. Il Trio per pianoforte n. 1 in Si bemolle maggiore, D. 898, fu eseguito per la prima volta in un concerto privato il 28 gennaio 1828 a Vienna, e fu pubblicato nel 1836, ben dopo la morte di Schubert. L’opera inizia con un brioso Allegro, il cui gioioso tema principale è esplorato da tutti e tre gli strumenti. Il violoncello introduce un’armoniosa melodia secondaria e nella sezione di sviluppo centrale entrambi i temi sono trattati con abili, magiche escursioni armoniche, altamente caratteristiche dello stile maturo di Schubert. Le note lontane ritornano anche nella ripresa del materiale principale: Schubert riporta il movimento alla sua chiave principale in Si bemolle solo quando il pianoforte ristabilisce il primo tema.

Nello squisito Andante, una melodia di ninna nanna viene suonata da ogni strumento in una struttura di delicate sovrapposizioni, prima di intraprendere viaggi tonali simili a quelli del primo movimento.

Questo lento movimento costituì una sorta di ripensamento, dal momento che soppiantò un Adagio che da allora vive di vita propria, come il Notturno di Schubert in Mi bemolle maggiore, D. 897. Le prime quattro battute dello Scherzo sono essenzialmente un’inversione dell’esordio del Quintetto ‘La Trota’. Il movimento si sviluppa con arguti scambi tra gli strumenti e una gentile sezione del trio. Il finale è descritto come un Rondo, ma include svariate variazioni, con l’elegante tema principale che subisce significative modifiche ad ogni ripresa. Il tema è in contrasto con le audaci enunciazioni all’unisono dei tre strumenti, finché Schubert non rielabora questo materiale passando dal tempo in 2/4 a un 3/2, con l’introduzione di una una polonaise (danza Polacca), completata da un bordone rustico.

Il tema stesso del rondò ricorda quello del Lied Skolie, D. 306, composto da Schubert nel 1815, con le sue struggenti parole: “inebriamoci della breve vita del fiore, prima che la sua fragranza svanisca”.

Robert Schumann definì il Trio per pianoforte in Si maggiore come “passivo, lirico e femminile”, ma ne elogiò anche le fresche qualità, sostenendo che, con un solo sguardo all’opera, “i problemi della nostra esistenza umana scompaiono e tutto il mondo è di nuovo fresco e luminoso. “ Il Trio per pianoforte n. 2 in mi bemolle maggiore, D. 929 fu composto nell’autunno del 1827, completato a novembre e pubblicato postumo nell’ottobre 1828. Fu eseguito per la prima volta il 26 dicembre 1827 al Musikverein di Vienna dal violinista Ignaz Schuppanzigh e dal violoncellista

Joseph Linke (entrambi erano stati i primi interpreti di alcuni quartetti d’archi di Beethoven) e dal pianista Carl Maria von Bocklet (a cui Schubert aveva dedicato la sua Sonata per pianoforte in Re, D. 850, nel 1825).

Sembra probabile che Schubert preferisse il Trio in mi bemolle maggiore al suo predecessore, dal momento che lo scelse come pezzo fulcro dell’unico concerto pubblico dedicato interamente alla sua musica mentre era in vita, il 26 marzo 1828, eseguito dagli stessi interpreti presso il Musikverein. Due settimane dopo, Schubert scrisse all’editore dell’opera, Probst di Lipsia, che il “trio per pianoforte, violino e violoncello, in particolare, ha ricevuto un’approvazione generale, al punto che, in effetti, sono stato invitato a tenere un secondo concerto (direi piuttosto una replica)”. Sembra che questa ulteriore esibizione non abbia mai avuto luogo, ma quando Probst pubblicò l’opera a Lipsia, si trattò dell’unico lavoro di Schubert ad essere pubblicato fuori Vienna mentre l’artista era in vita.

Robert Schumann giudicò l’opera con toni più favorevoli rispetto al Trio per pianoforte n. 1, elogiando il tono più attivo, maschile e drammatico del Trio in mi bemolle maggiore. Sia Schubert che Schumann riflettevano l’opinione contemporanea nella loro preferenza per il secondo lavoro: i rigori intellettuali del Trio n. 2 furono inizialmente più popolari, sebbene il Trio n. 1, arioso ed elegante, da allora sia divenuto l’opera eseguita con maggiore frequenza. Il Trio in mi bemolle maggiore intimorisce maggiormente nell’esecuzione a causa della sua generosa lunghezza, con diverse sezioni 20 20

ripetute e un lungo finale che lo stesso Schubert ridusse considerevolmente.

Un tema secondario, inoltre, deriva dai suoi ampi salti melodici.

Il materiale principale del primo movimento deriva dalla iniziale enunciazione all’unisono dei tre strumenti, una risposta del violoncello e un tema secondario più delicato introdotto dagli archi.

Queste idee si sviluppano nel corso di un esteso movimento caratterizzato da sorprendenti contrasti armonici e un inesorabile movimento in avanti. Nel movimento lento, simile a un Lied, il violoncello esegue il tema principale con l’accompagnamento staccato del pianoforte. L’ispirazione di questa melodia ha una storia interessante: nel 1978 il musicologo Manfred Willfort scoprì un Lied svedese dal titolo Se solen sjunker (Il sole è tramontato), che Schubert aveva ascoltato nel 1827, cantata dal tenore Isaak Albert Berg a Vienna. Il Lied era caduto nell’oblio, ma sappiamo che Schubert ne fu influenzato dal racconto del suo amico Leopold Sonnleithner; quando Willfort riscoprì la canzone, fu finalmente possibile confermare il collegamento. Schubert non copia direttamente la canzone, ma gli aspetti chiave sia della sua melodia che dell’accompagnamento possono essere ritrovati nel secondo movimento del Trio.

Contrariamente a questi ampi movimenti, lo Scherzo utilizza schemi canonici ben strutturati e procedimenti imitativi. In risposta alla leggerezza dello Scherzo troviamo la danza contadina semplice e rustica del Trio. Il Finale inizia con un’innocente spensieratezza che nulla lascia intuire dell’esteso movimento che ci attende. Schubert ci conduce in un viaggio epico attraverso una serie di temi chiave, prima che la sezione dello sviluppo renda omaggio al movimento lento, richiamandone il Lied, che riappare sul violoncello. Dopo ulteriori variazioni armoniche, il Lied del violoncello ritorna ancora nella tonica minore, e da lì alla chiave iniziale il passo è breve. Schubert celebra la sua conclusione con magnificenza e spavalderia.

Schubert scrisse a Probst il 1° agosto 1828: “Questo lavoro non sarà dedicato a nessuno in particolare, ma piuttosto a tutti coloro che ne traggono piacere. È questa la forma di dedica più redditizia”.

Era naturale che Franco, Sergio ed Elena si incontrassero ed iniziassero l’avventura in trio con immediata empatia musicale; nella carriera personale dei tre musicisti la musica da camera ha rivestito un ruolo costante ed importante.

Franco Mezzena è un violinista solista noto in tutto il mondo. Ha perfezionato le proprie abilità nell’esecuzione di musica da camera esibendosi per molti anni in duo con il padre, il grande pianista Bruno Mezzena. Franco ha inciso più di 70 CD insieme a celebri artisti, dedicandosi non solo al repertorio classico, ma anche alla composizione in un’ampia varietà di generi.

Sergio Patria ha insegnato presso il Conservatorio di Torino dal 1977 al 2007, città in cui dal 1974 al 1999 ha anche ricoperto il ruolo di primo violoncello del Teatro Regio; solista e camerista in vari gruppi da camera, si è dedicato principalmente al repertorio di duo e trio, a partire dal 1988 insieme alla pianista e sua consorte Elena Ballario, concertista, compositrice e docente presso il Conservatorio di Torino. Nel 2017 la coppia ha celebrato trent’anni di attività insieme nelle principali stagioni concertistiche italiane ed europee, esibendosi sia nei repertori classici che in composizioni originali inedite o trascrizioni realizzate appositamente da Elena Ballario ed eseguite in esclusiva dal duo.

I tre artisti si conoscevano di fama da sempre, ma il loro sodalizio artistico è nato nel 2015 come naturale conseguenza di una reciproca stima a distanza. La precisione e il rigore violinistico di Franco, insieme all’espressività innata di Sergio e all’equilibrio musicale di Elena, sono le tre principali caratteristiche che rendono completo questo trio; inevitabilmente, la scelta dei brani da eseguire incontra unanime approvazione. La prima prova del trio MezzenaPatria-Ballario è stata un’esecuzione del Trio op. 100 di Franz Schubert, brano per il quale i tre artisti nutrono una passione particolare e con il quale l’affinità interpretativa si è manifestata spontaneamente. In seguito, l’attività concertistica li ha portati verso esecuzioni di brani consueti del repertorio di trio, includendo incisioni di Čajkovskij e Rachmaninov, ma anche verso rare esecuzioni e incisioni, come i trii di Ermanno Wolf Ferrari e di Alberic Magnard.
