Études d’exécution This album represents a voyage through the highly dramatic and passionate cycle of Liszt’s 12 Transcendental Études. Traditionally, ‘studies’ were pieces based on a technical formula that aimed to develop and reinforce specific aspects of piano playing. Liszt’s studies, however, are incredibly depictive, profoundly imaginative, marvellous musical pieces; gems of the piano repertoire.

These études were written in an historical period during which many improvements were made in piano manufacture. The new instruments presented many more possibilities in terms of sound, tonal volume and structural resistance, which drove Liszt to develop a new kind of piano writing. The cycle thus opened doors to new compositional horizons and has influenced many composers since; today it remains an unsurpassed milestone in piano music.

The appellative ‘transcendental’ not only refers to the incredible difficulty of these pieces, both from a technical and interpretative point of view, but also to their mystic nature: exploring something beyond the knowable. In this album, I present my own interpretation of this challenging repertoire with the attempt to combine as faithfully as possible the composer’s indications with my personal ideas. Dealing with such demanding repertoire has required many years of dedication and this album is the realisation of a lifelong dream. Besides the music I interpret here, the album reflects all the people I have met, the experiences I have lived, the joys and sorrows I have felt throughout my life.

Every note I play is dedicated to my beloved piano teacher, Filomena Montopoli. Without her indefatigable support and enormous expertise, I would have never become the person and pianist I am. Lastly, my biggest and never-ending gratitude goes to my father Fabrizio and my mother Gabriella who have always believed in me and supported me, and to my brother Andrea, whose presence has always been a precious gift.

There are few composers who have been more talked about by their peers, and by those who followed, than Franz Liszt. His combination of charismatic personality, dazzling pianistic technique and innovative musical ideas attracted both admirers and critics, the former emphasising his enormous skill and originality, as well as his generosity to other composers; the latter inclined to dismiss his abilities as shallow showmanship. Saint-Saëns wrote: “Unfortunately for Liszt – an extraordinary performer who extracted from his instrument the strangest effects, completely transforming it as Paganini transformed the violin – he was fated to emphasise his virtuosity. At the same time it was not virtuosity, however amazing, but rather his own admirable musical nature that showed his true worth.” Yet separating Liszt’s virtuosity from his “admirable musical nature” implies an easy distinction between the two, when in many respects they were bound up together, his musicality expressed through technical brilliance; his technical prowess fuelling his imagination. As Felix Mendelssohn put it: “Liszt possesses a certain suppleness and independence in fingering as well as a thoroughly musical feeling that cannot be equalled. I have heard no performer whose musical perception extends to the very tips of his fingers and emanates directly from them as Liszt’s does.”

Those fingers were long, lacking interconnecting ‘webbing’, and blunt rather than tapered at the fingertips, physical features that enabled Liszt to perform the wide interval of a tenth without a reduction in attack.

His fourth or ‘ring’ fingers were also unusually flexible, which added to this textural versatility. In 1832 Chopin exclaimed: “I should like to steal from him the way to play my own Études.” For both composers, études went far beyond the notion of technical ‘studies’. The peak of Liszt’s virtuoso years is represented by his six Paganini Études and 12 Transcendental Études. These sets were published respectively as the Études d’exécution transcendante d’après Paganini and Grandes études, before they were revised in 1851 under the final titles of Grandes études de Paganini and Études d’exécution transcendante. Both sets reveal the extraordinary nature of Liszt’s pianism; his reworkings of the pieces were partly in order to make them more playable, but also reveal the development of his aesthetic over a period of more than 20 years.

The first version of the 12 Transcendental Études appeared in 1826, after which Liszt made revisions in 1837-8, adding numerous specific and unconventional markings. At this point, Robert Schumann reviewed the set as: “Studies in storm and dread … fit for ten or 12 players”. The final reincarnation of these Études

followed in 1851, at which stage Liszt assigned poetic titles to almost every piece; a couple were also added by Ferruccio Busoni in his edition of the work. The tonal scheme of the final version follows the same pattern as the 1826 original: a descending circle of fifths, alternating between major keys and their relative minors. It seems likely that Liszt had intended to continue this sequence for the entire 24 keys available – the 1838 publication was announced as a set of 24 – but stopped at 12.

The set opens with a ‘Preludio’ in C, setting the scene by whisking up and down the keyboard and unfurling arpeggiated chords. The next piece, a capriccio in A minor, was left untitled by Liszt, but Busoni gave it the title ‘Fusée’ (‘Rockets’) to evoke its volatile and explosive nature articulated via alternating hands and daredevil leaps. ‘Paysage’, in the pastoral key of F, is very different from the 1826 toccata from which it originated: this is a rich, lyrical piece that seems to capture the light and swell of the countryside.

If audiences swooned at Liszt’s virtuosity, they must surely have sighed when he performed a piece such as this. ‘Mazeppa’ was the subject of an epic poem by Byron, and another by Hugo, based on the story of Ivan Mazepa, said to have been punished for his love affair with a Polish countess by being strapped naked to a wild horse that is then released; Mazeppa clings on until at last he is freed when the poor animal dies of exhaustion. Liszt used his technique of thematic transformation, in which an idea is reinvented in new guises, to mould the opening material into a gentler central section, and would go on to explore the story further in his symphonic poem, also called Mazeppa, composed between 1851 and 1856.

In the fifth piece, ‘Feux follets’ (‘Will-o’-the-wisps’), the ‘study’ element is palpable for the pianist in the challenge of playing lots of notes twice in quick succession (‘double notes’), as well as wide leaps, but the work’s ‘transcendental’ qualities – magical, flighty gestures and wide-ranging modulations – elevate it to something vivid and mesmerising. In the tumultuous ‘Vision’ we hear a cantus firmus that recalls the ‘Dies irae’ chant from the Roman Catholic Requiem Mass, while ‘Eroica’ shifts between arresting, skittish gestures and an imposing march.

Marked Presto furioso, ‘Wilde Jagd’ (‘Wild Hunt’) lives up to its title with ferociously difficult leaps and angular cross-rhythms as well as a more romantic, impassioned contrasting section. The 1826 original was influenced by Liszt’s teacher, Czerny, and the 1838 version is a sonata, both of less interest than the final iteration, one of Liszt’s most demanding and thrilling pieces. This dazzling difficulty need not be

at the expense of the music’s depth, as Saint-Saëns again insisted: “What hard things have been said against virtuosity! How fiercely it has been attacked in the name of Art with a capital A!” When, in actual fact, “in art a difficulty overcome is a thing of beauty… virtuosity is a powerful aid to music, whose scope it extends enormously… Beauty, however, comes into existence only when the difficulty is overcome to such a degree that the listener is unaware of its existence.”

The last four studies of the set are among Liszt’s finest pieces. The sepia-tinged ‘Ricordanza’ (‘Remembrance’), based on an almost operatic melody Liszt conceived in 1826, was described by Busoni as being like a “bundle of faded love letters”. The unnamed F-minor study (sometimes given the title ‘Appassionata’ on account of the 1838 version using the finale of Beethoven’s ‘Appassionata’ Sonata as a model in the coda) is the only piece of the set that is cast in a conventional form, its sonata structure unfolding with two contrasting themes developed with drama and formidable technique.

The orchestral sonorities Liszt conjures up in so much of his piano music are especially audible in ‘Harmonies du soir’; this exceptional piece is drenched in atmosphere and colour, and is so varied and selfcontained in its material and shape that it might almost suggest a programmatic narrative. This powerfully evocative quality continues in the final piece, ‘Chasse-neige’ (‘Whirlwinds of snow’). The extraordinarily spacious sonorities achieved in this piece render it difficult to believe that a single pianist is behind them; constant tremolo vividly suggests flurries of snow; as Busoni wrote, this could be the “noblest example, perhaps, amongst all music” of a poetic nature, with its “sublime and steady fall of snow that gradually buries landscape and people”. Liszt’s integrity is apparent in his refusal to end the work, and indeed the whole set, with an obvious call for applause; the eddying swirls prevail, engulfing us until all falls silent.

This gift for marrying technique and emotion is perhaps best summed up by conductor and critic Hans von Bülow, a Liszt student who in 1857 married Liszt’s daughter, Cosima (before she ran off with Wagner…): “The great mastery of Liszt rests mainly on his marvellously expansive and manifold power of expressing outwardly what he feels inwardly… His genius gives him complete confidence in the effects of his own brilliant imagination.”

Music has been my compass since an early age. I started my first piano lessons aged 6, influenced by my father’s activities as a musician. I was constantly stimulated by music, which was part of my family’s daily life. I developed an increasing passion for piano playing, and the turning point of my career has been encountering my teacher, Filomena Montopoli. We are the people we meet, and she continues to be my guide, my support and my point of reference.

While studying with Professor Montopoli, my musical journey expanded and brought me to meet other illustrious maestros and to win numerous prizes in international and national competitions. I will not list these here, as it is not the main aim of my biography; I would rather highlight the fact that my achievements would not have been as significant without the even greater influence that failures have had on my artistic development.

In 2017, I pursued my bachelor’s degree in the city where I live, Pescara, with the highest marks and honours.

I also studied with Maestro Andrea Lucchesini at the Scuola di Musica di Fiesole for two challenging and highly educational years. In 2018, I won a scholarship to participate in the Second International Winter Piano Academy Feuerwerk in Germany, where I toured the country with many recitals. Performances with orchestra included Chopin’s First Piano Concerto in 2017, and in 2018, with the Dacorum Symphony Orchestra, Rachmaninov’s Second Piano Concerto under the guidance of my dear friend Claudio di Meo. I then attended the Royal College of Music and became, in 2021, Master of Music in Performance under the guidance of Dina Parakhina. Today, I am delighted to be working on a PhD in Music at the University of Surrey. My research is related to music written in Nazi concentration camps during the Second World War, reflecting a long-held interest in the tragic history of the Holocaust and the desire to combine my deep feelings for this subject with my activity as a musician.

Études d’exécution Questo album rappresenta un viaggio attraverso il ciclo profondamente poetico e suggestivo dei 12 Studi Trascendentali di Franz Liszt. In origine lo Studio si presentava come una composizione che mirava a sviluppare o rinforzare determinate difficoltà tecniche. Tuttavia, gli studi di Liszt differiscono totalmente da questa concezione, fanno dell’elevata qualità artistica e musicale la loro principale caratteristica e sono oggi considerati meravigliose gemme del repertorio pianistico.

Questi studi furono composti in un periodo storico di grandi innovazioni per la costruzione dei pianoforti.

I nuovi strumenti, che cominciarono ad offrire via via molte più possibilità in termini di suono, volume e resistenza strutturale, spinsero Liszt a sviluppare una nuova e più moderna tipologia di scrittura pianistica.

La serie di studi qui interpretata aprì sostanzialmente le porte a nuovi orizzonti compositivi, influenzando tutte le generazioni successive di compositori e rimanendo un’insuperabile pietra miliare nella storia del pianoforte.

L’appellativo ‘trascendentale’ non si riferisce soltanto all’incredibile difficoltà di queste opere, dal punto di vista sia tecnico che interpretativo, ma anche e soprattutto alla loro natura metafisica tesa ad esplorare qualcosa che andasse aldilà dell’esperibile, sfruttando a pieno tutte le possibilità sonore che lo strumento poteva offrire. In questo CD ho il piacere di proporre la mia personale interpretazione con il tentativo di armonizzare il più fedelmente possibile le indicazioni del compositore alle mie idee stilistiche ed estetiche.

Riuscire ad affrontare un repertorio così complesso ha richiesto anni di estrema dedizione e questa incisione rappresenta la realizzazione di un sogno che porto con me sin dalla mia infanzia. Oltre alla musica che qui interpreto, l’album racchiude tutte le persone che ho incontrato, le esperienze che ho vissuto, le gioie e i dolori che ho provato nel corso della mia vita.

Pochi compositori sono stati oggetto di discussione dei propri contemporanei e delle generazioni successive quanto Franz Liszt. La sua personalità carismatica, insieme ad una straordinaria tecnica pianistica e ad innovative idee musicali, attirarono l’interesse sia di ammiratori che di critici: i primi ne sottolineavano la grande maestria e originalità, nonché la generosità nei confronti degli altri compositori; gli altri ne liquidavano le capacità come superficiali doti di intrattenitore. Saint-Saëns scrisse: “Purtroppo per Liszt – uno straordinario interprete che otteneva dal proprio strumento gli effetti più strani, trasformandolo completamente come Paganini trasformava il violino – era destinato a enfatizzare il proprio virtuosismo. Allo stesso tempo, non è stato il virtuosismo, per quanto sorprendente, ma piuttosto la sua stessa ammirevole natura musicale a mostrarne il vero valore”. Eppure, separare il virtuosismo di Liszt dalla sua “ammirevole natura musicale” implica che essi possano essere facilmente distinti, mentre in realtà, sotto molti aspetti, erano saldamente legati, poiché in Liszt la musicalità si esprimeva attraverso la genialità tecnica; l’abilità tecnica alimentava la sua immaginazione. Come ebbe a dire Felix Mendelssohn: “Liszt possiede una precisa flessibilità e indipendenza nella diteggiatura, nonché un pieno sentimento musicale che non può essere eguagliato. Non ho mai sentito un altro artista la cui percezione musicale si estenda fino alla punta delle dita ed emani direttamente da esse come accade in Liszt”.

Quelle dita erano lunghe, prive di membrana interdigitale e smussate, più che affusolate, sulla punta, caratteristiche fisiche che consentivano a Liszt di eseguire l’ampio intervallo di decima senza riduzioni nell’attacco. I suoi anulari erano insolitamente flessibili, la qual cosa andava ad aggiungersi alla menzionata flessibilità strutturale. Nel 1832, Chopin esclamò: “Vorrei rubargli il modo giusto di eseguire i miei Études”.

Per entrambi i compositori, gli études andavano ben oltre la nozione di “studi” tecnici. Il virtuosismo di Liszt raggiunge l’apice con i sei Étude de Paganini e i 12 Studi d’esecuzione trascendentale. Queste due serie di composizioni furono pubblicate rispettivamente come Études d’exécution trascendente d’après Paganini e Grandes études; furono in seguito rielaborate, nel 1851, e intitolate Grandes études de Paganini e Études d’exécution trascendente. Entrambi i lavori rivelano la straordinaria natura del pianismo di Liszt; le sue rielaborazioni dei pezzi miravano, in parte, a renderli di più agevole esecuzione, ma rivelano anche l’evoluzione della sua estetica in un periodo di oltre 20 anni.

La prima versione dei 12 Studi d’esecuzione trascendentale apparve nel 1826; in seguito, Liszt effettuò delle correzioni nel 1837-8, aggiungendo numerose indicazioni specifiche e anticonvenzionali. Fu allora che Robert Schumann li recensì, definendoli “studi nella tempesta e nel terrore.. adatti a dieci o 12 esecutori”. L’ultima revisione degli Études avvenne nel 1851, anno in cui Liszt assegnò titoli poetici a

quasi ogni brano; un paio di titoli furono poi aggiunti da Ferruccio Busoni, nella sua edizione dell’opera.

Lo schema tonale della versione definitiva segue l’originale datato 1826: un circolo discendente di quinte, in cui si alternano chiavi maggiori e le relative minori. Probabilmente Liszt aveva intenzione di continuare questa sequenza per tutte le 24 tonalità disponibili – la pubblicazione del 1838 fu annunciata come una serie di 24 – ma si fermò a 12.

La serie inizia con un “Preludio” in Do a determinare l’atmosfera generale con vorticosi movimenti che percorrono la tastiera e arpeggi che si susseguono. Il pezzo successivo, un capriccio in La minore, fu lasciato senza titolo da Liszt, ma Busoni lo intitolò Fusée (“Razzi”) per evocarne la natura movimentata ed esplosiva che si articola in mani alternate e salti temerari. Paysage, nella chiave pastorale di Fa, è molto diversa dalla toccata del 1826, da cui ebbe origine: si tratta di un brano ricco e lirico che sembra catturare la luce e la sinuosità della campagna. Se il pubblico andava in estasi per il virtuosismo di Liszt, senz’altro sospirava quando egli eseguiva questa composizione. Mazeppa è un poema epico di Byron, e anche una ballata di Hugo, basato sulla storia di Ivan Mazeppa, punito a causa di una storia d’amore con una contessa polacca: egli è legato nudo a un cavallo selvaggio che lo trascina via con sé. Mazeppa resta aggrappato finché viene liberato allorché il povero animale muore di stanchezza. Liszt utilizzò la tecnica della trasformazione tematica, in cui un’idea è reinventata sotto nuove forme, in modo da modellare il materiale iniziale e riproporlo in una sezione centrale più dolce; continuerà in seguito ad esplorare ulteriormente questa vicenda nel suo poema sinfonico, anch’esso intitolato Mazeppa, composto tra il 1851 e 1856.

Nel quinto brano, ‘Feux follets’ (‘Fuochi fatui’), i tratti dello ‘studio’ sono ben evidenti per il pianista posto di fronte alla sfida di eseguire tante note due volte in rapida successione (‘doppie note’), insieme ad ampi salti, ma le qualità “trascendentali” dell’opera – gesti magici e leggeri e modulazioni ad ampio raggio – la elevano a qualcosa di intenso e ipnotico. Nella tumultuosa Vision (‘Visione’) ascoltiamo un cantus firmus che ricorda il Dies irae della Messa da Requiem Cattolica Romana, mentre Eroica alterna gesti sorprendentemente veloci a una marcia imponente.

Con l’indicazione iniziale presto furioso, “Wilde Jagd” (“Caccia selvaggia”) è all’altezza del suo titolo. Il brano presenta salti estremamente complessi e spigolosi ritmi incrociati, in contrasto con una sezione più romantica e appassionata. La versione originale del 1826 subì l’influenza dell’insegnante di Liszt, Czerny, mentre quella del 1838 è una sonata: entrambe sono meno convincenti rispetto alla versione finale, uno

dei pezzi più impegnativi ed emozionanti di Liszt. L’impressionante difficoltà non va necessariamente a scapito della profondità della musica, come faceva ancora notare Saint-Saëns: “Quanti giudizi spietati sono stati espressi contro il virtuosismo! Con quanta ferocia è stato attaccato in nome dell’Arte con la A maiuscola!” Quando, in realtà, «nell’arte una difficoltà superata è cosa bella... il virtuosismo è un potente aiuto alla musica, che grazie ad esso estende enormemente le proprie possibilità... La bellezza, però, nasce solo quando la difficoltà è superata a tal punto che l’ascoltatore non si accorge della sua esistenza”.

Gli ultimi quattro studi della serie sono tra i pezzi più belli di Liszt. La ‘Ricordanza’, dai toni seppia, basata su una melodia quasi operistica concepita da Liszt nel 1826, fu descritta da Busoni come un “pacco di lettere d’amore sbiadite”. Lo studio senza nome in Fa minore (a volte intitolato Appassionata a causa della versione del 1838, che nella coda prendeva come modello il finale della Sonata Appassionata di Beethoven) è l’unico pezzo della serie ad avere una forma convenzionale, con la struttura di sonata che si articola intorno a due temi contrastanti sviluppati con drammaticità e tecnica formidabili.

Le sonorità orchestrali che Liszt evoca in gran parte della sua musica per pianoforte si percepiscono specialmente in Harmonies du soir (“Armonie della sera”); questo pezzo eccezionale è permeato di atmosfera e colore, ed è così vario e a sé stante nel materiale e nella forma che potrebbe quasi suggerire una narrazione programmatica. Questa qualità potentemente evocativa prosegue nel pezzo finale, Chasseneige (“Scaccianeve”). Le sonorità straordinariamente ampie raggiunte in questo pezzo rendono difficile credere che dietro di esse ci sia un solo pianista; il tremolo costante evoca vividamente raffiche di neve; come scriveva Busoni, potrebbe essere “l’esempio più nobile, forse, tra tutte le musiche” di natura poetica, con la sua “sublime e costante caduta di neve che seppellisce gradualmente il paesaggio e le persone”.

L’integrità di Liszt è evidente nel suo rifiuto di terminare il brano, e in effetti l’intera serie, con un facile applauso; prevalgono i turbini che ci travolgono, fino a quando tutto tace. Il dono di saper sposare tecnica ed emozione è forse meglio sintetizzato dal direttore d’orchestra e critico Hans von Bülow, allievo di Liszt, che nel 1857 ne sposò la figlia, Cosima (prima che ella scappasse con Wagner...): “La grande maestria di Liszt si basa principalmente sul suo immenso potere, meravigliosamente multiforme, di esprimere esternamente ciò che sente interiormente... Il suo genio gli dà totale padronanza degli effetti della sua brillante immaginazione”.

Sin dalla tenera età, la musica è sempre stata la mia bussola. Ho iniziato a prendere lezioni di pianoforte a 6 anni, influenzato dall’attività di musicista di mio padre. Sono stato sempre costantemente stimolato dalla musica, che era parte della vita quotidiana della mia famiglia. Ho sviluppato per il pianoforte una crescente passione, fino alla svolta della mia carriera, l’incontro con la mia insegnante, Filomena Montopoli. Noi siamo le persone che incontriamo; lei continua ad essere per me guida, supporto e punto di riferimento.

Durante gli studi con la Professoressa Montopoli il mio percorso musicale si è ampliato e mi ha portato a conoscere altri illustri maestri e a vincere numerosi premi in concorsi internazionali e nazionali. Non li elencherò qui, poiché non è questo lo scopo principale della mia biografia; vorrei piuttosto sottolineare il fatto che i miei successi non sarebbero stati così significativi senza l’impatto anche maggiore che gli insuccessi hanno avuto sul mio sviluppo artistico.

Nel 2017 ho conseguito la laurea nella città in cui vivo, Pescara, con il massimo dei voti e la lode. Ho studiato anche con il M° Andrea Lucchesini presso la Scuola di Musica di Fiesole per due anni impegnativi e altamente formativi. Nel 2018 ho vinto una borsa di studio per partecipare al Second International Winter Piano Academy Feuerwerk in Germania, dove ho tenuto recital solistici in molte città. Le mie esibizioni con orchestra includono il Concerto nº 1 per pianoforte e orchestra di Chopin nel 2017 e, nel 2018, con la Dacorum Symphony Orchestra, il Concerto per pianoforte nº 2 di Rachmaninov, sotto la direzione del mio caro amico Claudio di Meo. Ho poi frequentato il Royal College of Music e sono diventato, nel 2021, Master of Music in Performance sotto la guida di Dina Parakhina. Attualmente sto conseguendo un dottorato di ricerca in Musica presso l’Università del Surrey. La mia ricerca è legata alla musica composta nei campi di concentramento nazisti durante la seconda guerra mondiale e riflette il mio antico interesse per la tragica storia dell’Olocausto e il desiderio di unire i profondi sentimenti per questo argomento con l’attività di musicista.

Études d’exécution Diese CD stellt eine Reise durch den hochdramatischen und leidenschaftlichen Zyklus von Liszts Zwölf transzendentalen Etüden dar. Traditionell waren Etüden Stücke, die auf einer technischen Formel basierten und darauf abzielten, bestimmte Aspekte des Klavierspiels zu entwickeln und zu verstärken.

Liszts Etüden sind jedoch unglaublich anschauliche, zutiefst phantasievolle, wunderbare Musikstücke; Perlen des Klavierrepertoires.

Diese Etüden wurden in einer historischen Periode geschrieben, in der viele Verbesserungen im Klavierbau vorgenommen wurden. Die neuen Instrumente boten viel mehr Möglichkeiten in Bezug auf Klang, Tonvolumen und strukturelle Robustheit, was Liszt dazu veranlasste, eine neue Art von Klaviermusik zu entwickeln. Der Zyklus eröffnete somit kompositorische Horizonte und hat seither viele Komponisten beeinflusst; er bleibt bis heute ein unübertroffener Meilenstein der Klaviermusik.

Die Bezeichnung „transzendental” bezieht sich nicht nur auf die unglaubliche Schwierigkeit dieser Stücke, sowohl in technischer als auch in interpretatorischer Hinsicht, sondern auch auf ihre mystische Natur: die Erforschung von etwas, das jenseits des Erfassbaren liegt. In diesem Album präsentiere ich meine eigene Interpretation dieses anspruchsvollen Repertoires, wobei ich versuche, die Angaben des Komponisten so getreu wie möglich mit meinen persönlichen Vorstellungen zu verbinden. Die Beschäftigung mit einem so anspruchsvollen Repertoire hat viele Jahre der Hingabe erfordert, und diese CD ist die Verwirklichung eines lebenslangen Traums. Neben der Musik, die ich hier interpretiere, spiegelt die CD alle Menschen wider, die ich getroffen habe, die Erfahrungen, die ich gemacht habe, die Freuden und Sorgen, die ich im Laufe meines Lebens empfunden habe.

Es gibt nur wenige Komponisten, über die von ihren Zeitgenossen und ihren Nachfolgern mehr gesprochen wurde als über Franz Liszt. Seine Kombination aus charismatischer Persönlichkeit, umwerfender pianistischer Technik und innovativen musikalischen Ideen zog sowohl Bewunderer als auch Kritiker an. Erstere betonten sein enormes Können und seine Originalität sowie seine Großzügigkeit gegenüber anderen Komponisten; Letztere neigten dazu, seine Fähigkeiten als seichte Effekthascherei abzutun. SaintSaëns schrieb: „Unglücklicherweise war Liszt – ein außergewöhnlicher Interpret, der seinem Instrument die seltsamsten Effekte entlockte und es völlig verwandelte, wie Paganini die Geige verwandelte – dazu verurteilt, seine Virtuosität zu betonen. Dabei war es nicht die Virtuosität, so erstaunlich sie auch sein mochte, sondern seine bewundernswerte musikalische Natur, die seinen wahren Wert zeigte”. Die Trennung von Liszts Virtuosität und seiner „bewundernswerten musikalischen Natur” impliziert jedoch eine einfache Unterscheidung zwischen den beiden, obwohl sie in vielerlei Hinsicht miteinander verbunden waren: Seine Musikalität drückte sich durch technische Brillanz aus; sein technisches Können beflügelte seine Fantasie. Felix Mendelssohn sagte einmal, dass Liszt eine gewisse Geschmeidigkeit und Unabhängigkeit im Fingersatz sowie ein durch und durch musikalisches Gefühl, das seinesgleichen sucht, besitzt. Er habe noch keinen Interpreten gehört, dessen musikalisches Empfinden bis in die Fingerspitzen reicht und direkt von ihnen ausgeht wie bei Liszt.

Diese Finger waren lang, hatten keine „Schwimmhäute” und waren an den Fingerspitzen eher stumpf als spitz - physische Merkmale, die es Liszt ermöglichten, das Intervall einer Dezime zu greifen, ohne den Anschlag zu verringern. Seine vierten oder „Ringfinger” waren auch ungewöhnlich flexibel, was zu dieser strukturellen Vielseitigkeit beitrug. Im Jahr 1832 gab Chopin zu: „Ich würde gerne von ihm die Art und Weise übernehmen, meine eigenen Etüden zu spielen”. Für beide Komponisten gingen die Etüden weit über den Begriff der technischen „Studienstücke” hinaus. Der Höhepunkt von Liszts virtuosen Jahren wird durch seine sechs Paganini-Etüden und Zwölf transzendentalen Etüden repräsentiert. Diese wurden als Études d’exécution transcendante d’après Paganini und Grandes études veröffentlicht, bevor sie 1851 unter dem endgültigen Titel Grandes études de Paganini und Études d’exécution transcendante überarbeitet wurden. Beide Sammlungen offenbaren den außergewöhnlichen Charakter von Liszts Klavierspiel; seine Überarbeitungen der Stücke dienten zum Teil dazu, sie spielbarer zu machen, zeigen aber auch die Entwicklung seiner Ästhetik über einen Zeitraum von mehr als 20 Jahren.

Die erste Fassung der 12 transzendentalen Etüden erschien 1826; danach nahm Liszt in den Jahren 1837-38 Überarbeitungen vor und fügte zahlreiche spezifische und unkonventionelle Angaben hinzu.

Zu diesem Zeitpunkt beschrieb Robert Schumann die Sammlung als Etüden des Sturms und Dranges... geeignet für zehn oder 12 Spieler. Die endgültige Fassung dieser Etüden entstand 1851, wobei Liszt fast jedem Stück poetische Titel zuordnete; einige wurden auch von Ferruccio Busoni in seiner Ausgabe 16

des Werks hinzugefügt. Ihr tonales Schema folgt demselben Muster wie das des Originals von 1826: ein absteigender Quintenzirkel, der zwischen Dur-Tonarten und den parallelen Moll-Tonarten wechselt.

Es scheint wahrscheinlich, dass Liszt beabsichtigt hatte, diese Abfolge für die gesamten 24 verfügbaren Tonarten fortzusetzen – die Veröffentlichung von 1838 wurde als eine Sammlung von 24 Etüden angekündigt –, sie hörte jedoch bei 12 auf.

Die Sammlung beginnt mit einem einleitenden „Preludio” in C-Dur, das die Tastatur von oben bis unten abläuft und arpeggierte Akkorde einleitet. Das nächste Stück, ein Capriccio in a-Moll, wurde von Liszt unbetitelt gelassen, aber Busoni nannte es „Fusée” (Raketen), um seinen flüchtigen und explosiven Charakter zu verdeutlichen, der durch überkreuzte Hände und waghalsige Sprünge zum Ausdruck kommt. „Paysage”, in der pastoralen Tonart F-Dur, unterscheidet sich stark von der Toccata von 1826, aus der es stammt: Es ist ein reiches, lyrisches Stück, das das Licht und die Weite der Landschaft einzufangen scheint. Wenn das Publikum bei Liszts Virtuosität ins Schwärmen kam, muss es bei einem Stück wie diesem sicherlich geseufzt haben. „Mazeppa” war das Thema eines epischen Gedichts von Byron und eines weiteren von Hugo, das auf der Geschichte von Iwan Mazepa basiert, der für seine Liebesaffäre mit einer polnischen Gräfin bestraft wurde, indem man ihn nackt auf ein wildes Pferd schnallte, das dann freigelassen wurde. Mazepa klammerte sich an das Pferd, bis er schließlich befreit wurde, als das arme Tier vor Erschöpfung zu Boden fiel. Liszt nutzte seine Technik der thematischen Umformung, bei der eine Idee in neuem Gewand gehüllt wird, um das Eingangsmaterial zu einem sanfteren Mittelteil zu formen, und fuhr fort, die Geschichte in seiner zwischen 1851 und 1856 komponierten symphonischen Dichtung, die ebenfalls Mazeppa heißt, weiter zu erforschen.

Im fünften Stück, „Feux follets” (Irrlichter), ist das „Etüden”-Element für den Pianisten durch die Herausforderung, schnelle Notenpaare hintereinander zu spielen, sowie durch weite Sprünge präsent; aber die „transzendentalen” Qualitäten des Werks – magische, flüchtige Gesten und Modulationen in ferne Tonarten – erheben es zu etwas Lebendigem und Faszinierendem. In der stürmischen „Vision” hören wir einen Cantus firmus, der an den „Dies irae”-Gesang aus der römisch-katholischen RequiemMesse erinnert, während die „Eroica” zwischen fesselnden, sprunghaften Gesten und einem imposanten Marsch wechselt.

Die mit Presto furioso bezeichnete „Wilde Jagd” macht ihrem Titel alle Ehre mit furiosen, schwierigen Sprüngen und kantiger Polyrhythmik sowie einem romantischeren, leidenschaftlichen Kontrastteil. Das Original von 1826 wurde von Liszts Lehrer Czerny beeinflusst, und die Fassung von 1838 entspricht einer Sonate; beide weniger interessant als die endgültige Version, die zu Liszts anspruchsvollsten und 17

spannendsten Stücken zählt. Diese schillernde Schwierigkeit muss nicht auf Kosten der Tiefe der Musik gehen, wie Saint-Saëns erneut betonte: „Was hat man nicht alles gegen die Virtuosität gesagt! Wie entschieden ist sie im Namen der Kunst mit einem großen K in Angriff genommen worden!” In Wirklichkeit „ist in der Kunst eine überwundene Schwierigkeit eine Sache der Schönheit... Virtuosität ist ein mächtiges Hilfsmittel für die Musik, deren Umfang sie enorm erweitert... Schönheit entsteht jedoch nur, wenn die Schwierigkeit in einem solchen Maße überwunden wird, dass der Zuhörer sich ihrer Existenz nicht bewusst ist”.

Die letzten vier Studien der Sammlung gehören zu Liszts glänzendsten Stücken. Die sepiafarbene „Ricordanza” (Erinnerung), die auf einer fast opernhaften Melodie basiert, die Liszt 1826 konzipierte, wurde von Busoni als „ein Bündel verblasster Liebesbriefe” beschrieben. Die unbenannte f-Moll-Etüde (manchmal als „Appassionata” bezeichnet, da in der Fassung von 1838 das Finale von Beethovens „Appassionata”-Sonate in der Coda als Vorbild diente), ist das einzige Stück der Sammlung, das eine konventionelle Form mit zwei kontrastierenden Themen innerhalb einer Sonatenstruktur aufweist, die mit Dramatik und gewaltiger Technik entwickelt werden.

Die orchestralen Klangfarben, die Liszt in so vielen seiner Klavierstücke heraufbeschwört, sind besonders in „Harmonies du soir” hörbar; dieses außergewöhnliche Stück ist von Atmosphäre und Farbe durchtränkt und ist in seinem Material und seiner Form so vielfältig und in sich geschlossen, dass es fast einer programmatischen Erzählung gleichkommt. Diese kraftvoll beschwörende Eigenschaft setzt sich im letzten Stück, „Chasse-Neige” (Schneetreiben), fort. Der außerordentlich weiträumige Klang, der in diesem Stück erreicht wird, macht es schwer zu glauben, dass ein einzelner Pianist dahinter steckt; ein ständiges Tremolo suggeriert lebhaftes Schneegestöber; wie Busoni schrieb, könnte dies „vielleicht das edelste Beispiel unter aller Musik” poetischer Natur sein, mit seinem „erhabenen und stetigen Schneefall, der allmählich Landschaft und Menschen begräbt”. Liszts Integrität zeigt sich darin, dass er sich weigerte, das Werk, ja die ganze Sammlung, mit einem offensichtlichen Aufruf zum Appaus zu beenden; die wirbelnden Strudel überwiegen und verschlingen uns, bis alles verstummt. Diese Gabe, Technik und Emotion zu verbinden, wird vielleicht am besten von dem Dirigenten und Kritiker Hans von Bülow zusammengefasst, einem Liszt-Schüler, der 1857 Liszts Tochter Cosima heiratete (bevor sie mit Wagner durchbrannte…), indem er zu verstehen gab, dass die große Meisterschaft Liszts hauptsächlich auf seiner wunderbar vollendeten und beispiellosen Fähigkeit beruht, äußerlich auszudrücken, was er innerlich fühlt... Sein Genie schenkt ihm völliges Vertrauen in die Wirkungen seiner eigenen brillanten Phantasie”.

Die Musik ist seit frühester Kindheit mein Kompass. Im Alter von 6 Jahren erhielt ich meinen ersten Klavierunterricht, beeinflusst durch die Tätigkeit meines Vaters als Musiker. Die Musik, die Teil des täglichen Lebens meiner Familie war, stimulierte mich ständig. Ich entwickelte eine wachsende Leidenschaft für das Klavierspiel, und der Wendepunkt meiner Karriere war die Begegnung mit meiner Lehrerin Filomena Montopoli. Die Menschen, denen wir begegnen, beeinflussen uns, und sie ist nach wie vor mein Wegweiser, meine Unterstützung und mein Bezugspunkt.

Während meines Studiums bei Frau Professorin Montopoli erweiterte sich mein musikalischer Weg und führte mich zu Begegnungen mit anderen illustren Maestros und zum Gewinn zahlreicher Preise bei internationalen und nationalen Wettbewerben. Ich werde diese hier nicht aufzählen, da dies nicht das Hauptziel meiner Biografie ist; ich möchte vielmehr die Tatsache hervorheben, dass meine Erfolge ohne den noch größeren Einfluss, den Misserfolge auf meine künstlerische Entwicklung hatten, nicht so bedeutend gewesen wären.

Im Jahr 2017 habe ich in meiner Heimatstadt Pescara mein Bachelor-Studium mit Bestnote und Auszeichnung abgeschlossen. Außerdem studierte ich zwei herausfordernde und lehrreiche Jahre lang bei Maestro Andrea Lucchesini an der Scuola di Musica di Fiesole. Im Jahr 2018 gewann ich ein Stipendium für die Teilnahme an der Zweiten Internationalen Winter-Klavierakademie Feuerwerk in Deutschland, wo ich mit vielen Konzerten durch das Land tourte. Zu den Auftritten mit Orchester gehörten 2017 Chopins Erstes Klavierkonzert und 2018 mit dem Dacorum Symphony Orchestra Rachmaninows Zweites Klavierkonzert unter der Leitung meines lieben Freundes Claudio di Meo. Anschließend besuchte ich das Royal College of Music und erwarb 2021 den Master of Music in Performance unter der Leitung von Dina Parakhina. Heute freue ich mich, an der University of Surrey an einer Doktorarbeit in Musik zu arbeiten. Meine Forschung bezieht sich auf die Musik, die in den Konzentrationslagern der Nazis während des Zweiten Weltkriegs geschrieben wurde. Dies spiegelt mein langjähriges Interesse an der tragischen Geschichte des Holocausts und den Wunsch wider, meine tiefen Gefühle für dieses Thema mit meiner Tätigkeit als Musiker zu verbinden.
