ENG My first encounter with the music of Scriabin occurred during my conservatory years in Spain, in 2000, when I studied the Étude pathétique, Op. 8, No. 12. Years later, I became immersed in the magnitude of Scriabin’s revolutionary efforts via the recordings of the Russian pianist Vladimir Sofronitsky. After completing my doctoral thesis on these magnificent preludes, I continued to perform and study them for years. The objective of this double CD is to present a substantial body of his works that illustrate the exceptional metamorphosis of Scriabin’s style over the course of approximately 26 years.

This journey has enriched me as a pianist, as a pedagogue and even as a human being. Exploring Scriabin’s inner world has forced me to deepen my understanding of the sonorous possibilities of the piano. This repertoire has propelled my pianism beyond anything I believed possible. Scriabin’s quest for the unimaginable, the esoteric, and the mysterious is reflected in his music, especially from 1903 onwards.

During the preparation of this project, working on the technical and musical aspects of the preludes, I often found myself wondering: “Is this really possible?” Particularly demanding were the dislocated basses, which require skilful use of pedal and finger legato. Pedalling, in fact, was a major concern throughout. Scriabin’s music calls for a persistent and subtle use of the pedals, particularly the damper. Learning to release the pedal slowly, to exploit the half-pedal or even superficial pedalling, are paramount skills required for conveying the opulence of Scriabin’s music. I was repeatedly awestruck by the wonderful sounds created by his harmonies.

Because Scriabin was frequently negligent with notation and a poor proofreader of his own work, I used a variety of musical sources to verify accidentals, registration, dynamics, pedalling, tempo markings, phrasing and metronome indications.

Throughout my journey, I have inched closer to Scriabin – the composer and the flawed human being, but also the incomparable pianist. Beyond those well-known and credible stereotypes of an eccentric megalomaniac, Scriabin revealed himself, through his music, to be profound, subtle and penetrating. The pianist Garrick Ohlsson has described performing the music of Scriabin as “intoxicating”. I wholeheartedly agree.

During the second half of the 19th century, remarkable musical advances were made in the works of such innovative spirits as Liszt, Berlioz and Wagner. Their pioneering music exerted an extraordinary impact on that of the subsequent generation, including Debussy, Mahler, Strauss, and Scriabin who, between them, launched the modern era in music.

Yet Scriabin stands alone as a transcendental visionary: his music, originating in the style of Chopin and Liszt, wanders through the realms of Debussy and Wagner and, ultimately abandoning late Romantic tradition, unlocks the previously unforeseen power of atonality, bitonality, tonal ambiguity and polyrhythms. Scriabin’s compositions count amongst the most innovative, idiosyncratic and bewitching of all time.

The development of Scriabin’s groundbreaking compositional style is best understood through his piano works, which comprise the majority of his oeuvre. Beyond the larger works – his ten published sonatas, a concerto and a fantasy – Scriabin’s piano explorations are represented by miniature gems: the mazurkas, impromptus, waltzes, poems, a polonaise, études, nocturnes, morceaux, and the preludes.

Scriabin’s 90 piano preludes exemplify the striking evolution of his ingenious music, his idiosyncratic philosophy and his provocative personality.

Each prelude contains a single idea, which is transformed and varied; second themes are usually omitted. Tolstoy described them as being “short as

a sparrow’s beak”. Scriabin often conceived these microscopic jewels in a brief moment of inspiration during his many travels throughout Europe. The influential Russian music publisher and impresario Mitrofan Belyayev (1836-1904), Scriabin’s lifelong friend, regularly demanded new compositions.

Perhaps in response to this pressure to produce, Scriabin neglected, in otherwise impeccably written manuscripts, numerous musical details: accidentals can be inconsistent; pedal indications may be sparse or illegible; metronome markings are sometimes misleading or inaccurate.

The early Trois Morceaux, Op. 2, demonstrate Scriabin’s admiration for Chopin. Composed in 1889, his first year at the Moscow Conservatory, the B-major Prelude is the only prelude with no tempo or character marking. The stunning pianism of the renowned virtuoso Josef Lhévinne made an indelible impression on Scriabin. In an attempt to imitate Lhévinne’s technique, Scriabin severely strained his right hand. Thus forced to disengage his right hand from the keyboard, he developed a peerless left-hand technique that would inform his compositional style for the duration of his career.

The Op. 9 pieces, Prelude and Nocturne (1894), are the first of his works to incorporate these signature left-hand pyrotechnics.

During his early explorations of Chopin, Scriabin wrote nocturnes, impromptus, waltzes, mazurkas – and preludes. Later in life, he denied that his music took any inspiration from Chopin, although

Scriabin’s habit of sleeping with the score of Chopin’s Preludes Op. 28, under his pillow belies this claim. Belyayev asked Scriabin to compose two sets of 24 preludes, probably inspired by the 48 Preludes and Fugues of J.S. Bach’s Well-Tempered Clavier. Scriabin eventually set about this task, but completed only 47 preludes. Belyayev published the first 24 as the Preludes Op. 11 (1888-1896); the remaining 23 were collected into four discrete publications: six as Op. 13, five as Op. 15, five as Op. 16 and seven as Op. 17.

Annotations on Scriabin’s autograph manuscript show that Op. 11 was written sporadically over several years and in various locales. The arrangement presented here corresponds not to the chronological order of composition, but to a tonal layout of major keys, following the ascending circle of fifths and the corresponding relative minor keys – similar to Chopin’s Op. 28.

The Prelude No. 4 in E minor, the earliest piece in the set, was written in 1888 in Moscow when Scriabin was only 16. Scriabin followed no specific compositional pattern in the remaining 23. These preludes came to life spontaneously, either at home or during one of his European concert tours.

Between 1889 and 1896 he composed in Kiev, Dresden, Heidelberg, Witznau, Amsterdam and Paris. Scriabin said of these pieces: “Each prelude is a small composition capable of standing on its own, independently of the others.’’ In the Preludes Opp. 13, 15 and 16, Scriabin continued the tonal

scheme of Op. 11, whereas Op. 17 abandons the pattern.

In 1897 Scriabin married Vera Ivanovna Isakovich, an accomplished pianist, and began a six-year teaching tenure at the Moscow Conservatory. This period proved to be unhappy both personally and compositionally. Scriabin did not enjoy teaching and had little time to compose; he managed to write his first two symphonies, but finished few piano works at this time. He resigned in 1903. The Four Preludes Op. 22, corresponding to the beginning of his Conservatory years, continue superficially to mirror Chopin’s manner, but certain melodic and harmonic gestures herald a new style. Such is the case in the Prelude No. 1, which ends inconclusively on the dominant chord.

The Two Preludes Op. 27 (1900), composed during Scriabin’s period of heroic affirmation – which also yielded his first two symphonies – already reveal an advanced harmonic vocabulary. The first exploits the interval of the fourth, both in melodic lines and within chords, and is called Patetico, a term that had already appeared in his Étude Op. 8, No. 12; this is the only time he employs the word in the Preludes. The piece is filled with anguish and desperation, massive chords, and culminates in a powerful climax.

After resigning from the Conservatory, Scriabin embarked on one of the most fruitful and forwardlooking compositional periods of his life. In the

Preludes Opp. 31, 33, 35, 37 and 39, Scriabin exploits the harmonic possibilities presented by the French sixth chord, which opened for him a new and radical harmonic trajectory. The rhythms gain sharpness; the modulations become increasingly unpredictable, and surprising twists and turns multiply. Such unconventional expressive titles as Con stravaganza (with extravagance), Vagamente (vague), Ardito (daring), Bellicoso (war-like), become typical for Scriabin. Only rarely does he resort to traditional tempo indications hereafter.

The Prelude Op. 37, No. 2, represents a pivotal moment in Scriabin’s style: the tertian harmonic conception now begins to transmute into chords built of superimposed fourths, and sonorities filled with added tones become commonplace. Many of the remaining preludes will take such harmonic devices to the extreme.

In the early years of the 20th century, Scriabin’s personal life became increasingly disordered. He was reeling from the untimely death in 1904 of Belyayev, and was plagued by financial woes. In 1903 he began a clandestine love affair with Tatiana de Schloezer, sister of his close friend, music critic Boris de Schloezer. In 1904, Scriabin left Vera and their three children for Tatiana.

During this time of personal and artistic transition, Scriabin searched for new harmonic, colouristic and rhythmic resources. The Trois Morceaux, Op. 45 (1904) continue this transformative process.

In the Prelude No.3, eleventh and thirteenth chords

abound, and harmonic resolutions become even more ambiguous, holding the tension until the end of the piece.

Philosophy and religion had always been a significant part of Scriabin’s intellectual life. He was inspired by pantheism, subjectivism, idealism, Nietzsche’s conception of the Übermensch, solipsism and mystical individualism. From 1905, Scriabin’s acquaintance with Madame Helena Blavatsky in Brussels, founder of the Theosophical Society, would have a profound impact on his inner world. The Preludes Op. 48 (1905), unveil a new Scriabinesque perspective on the world: his music, with its broken rhythms and massive dissonant chords, begins to sound more unsettled. The Prelude Op. 49, No. 2 (1905) contains a profusion of eleventh and thirteenth chords that create a pervasive harmonic tension. These features generated Scriabin’s mature harmonic language.

The Prelude Op. 51, No. 2 (1906), Lugubre, is a composition full of dark sonorities, chromaticism and a rhythmic writing that defies its ¾ time signature, obscuring the bar lines.

In the last years of Scriabin’s life, his megalomaniac tendencies became more pronounced, and his philosophical ideas more personal and intricate. His compositions, which had by now departed entirely from tonal convention, evolved into ambiguity and atonality. The Prelude Op. 59 (1910) is the first to omit a key signature and abjure any semblance of tonal conclusion. Chords built in fourths and their 7 7

transpositions represent the new tonal centres, and rhythms become more irregular and spontaneous.

In the two contrasting Preludes Op. 67 (1912-13), Scriabin’s famous mystic chord serves as the compositional point of departure. This new Scriabinesque harmonic entity is an aggregate of notes derived from the harmonic overtones series: C, F#, B♭, E, A and D. This mystic chord will lay the foundation for most of Scriabin’s late compositions.

It forms a connective device between the Preludes Op. 67 and Op. 74 (1914).

The Five Preludes Op. 74 represent the last set of pieces written by Scriabin before his premature death in 1915. Continuing with the same new style, their basis is also the mystic chord, presented in various guises by means of transposition, inversion, and non-chord tones added to the fundamental chord structure.

A cassette of Beethoven piano sonatas captivated me instantly. I vividly remember playing it repeatedly at home in Galicia and saying to my mother, “that’s what I want to do when I grow up!” I was about nine years old and decided then to become a pianist. After studying for three years at the conservatory, I made a living for the next few years playing boleros, tangos and The Beatles in hotels. With the money I made from working at an ice-cream parlour, I was able to acquire my first piano (and slept by its side for weeks). I pursued my studies at three different universities in the United States, where I remained for 14 years and obtained a Doctorate in Musical Arts, a Master in Music and an Artist Diploma, with the help of the Evelyn Storrs scholarship and others. While studying at the University of Maryland, I had the opportunity of undertaking research at the International Piano Archives, where I met Donald Manildi and Max Brown, who taught me a great deal about piano music and pianists. This experience enriched my life as a musician and pedagogue and led me to publish the article The Teachings of Alfred Cortot for Clavier Magazine, as well as to present seminars on the Russian School of piano playing.

This period was crucial in my personal development. Being so far away from home, taught me how to open my mind to new ideas and to respect every person and culture I encounter. I also lived in London, travelling there with the love of my life, Andrea.

I live in Spain, where I teach, perform and lecture. My interest in promoting music came to fruition in a festival I created in my homeland, and as Director of Chamber Music for the Vianden International Festival in Luxembourg.

I have been lucky to participate in festivals in Spain, Portugal, France, Italy, Belgium, Czech Republic, Switzerland, Brazil and in the United States, meeting incredible artists and minds who influenced me deeply, especially Luiz de Moura, Paul Ostrovsky, Mikhail Volchok, Carlos Rodríguez and Bert Lucarelli, with whom I co-authored We Can’t Always Play Waltzes. I also had the privilege of performing for Boris Berman, Garrick Ohlsson and Seymour Lipkin. Of paramount influence in my life was a Catholic priest, Fr. Thomas, who taught me how to deepen my spiritual life.

I learned over the years that to become a professional musician we must be resilient and stubborn, honest with ourselves, and pursue what we dream we can become. When I am away from the piano I miss its vibrations, its sound and the feeling of my hand over the keys. I wish I could continue playing the piano over many more lifetimes. My desire to communicate with the audience keeps me practising every day and pushes me to overcome the many obstacles that occur during the life of a pianist.

DEU Meine erste Begegnung mit Skrjabins Musik hatte ich im Jahre 2000 während meiner Studienzeit in Spanien, als ich die Étude pathétique Op. 8, Nr. 12 einstudierte. Jahre später eröffnete sich mir über die Aufnahmen des russischen Pianisten Vladimir Sofronitsky die Bedeutung seiner revolutionären Leistungen. Auch nach dem Abschluss meiner Doktorarbeit über diese herrlichen Präludien habe ich sie weiterhin jahrelang geübt und gespielt. Das Ziel dieser Doppel-CD ist es, eine substantielle Zusammenfassung seiner Werke zu präsentieren, die die außergewöhnliche Metamorphose von Skrjabins Stil im Laufe von etwa 26 Jahren illustriert.

Diese Erfahrung hat mich als Pianist, als Lehrer und auch menschlich bereichert. Die Erforschung von Skrjabins Innenwelt hat mich dazu gebracht, mein Verständnis für die klanglichen Möglichkeiten des Klaviers zu vertiefen. Dieses Repertoire hat meine Kenntnisse über das Klavier entschieden weiter vorangetrieben, als ich für möglich gehalten hatte. Skrjabins Suche nach dem Unvorstellbaren, dem Esoterischen und Geheimnisvollen spiegelt sich in seiner Musik, vor allem ab 1903.

Während ich bei der Vorbereitung dieses Projektes an den technischen und musikalischen Aspekten der Präludien arbeitete, fragte ich mich oft: „Ist das wirklich machbar?“ Besonders anspruchsvoll waren die verlagerten Bässe, die eine geschickte Anwendung der Pedale und Finger-Legato erfordern. Das Pedalspiel festzulegen war in der Tat äußerst wichtig. Skrjabins Musik erfordert einen ständigen und subtilen Einsatz der Pedale, vor allem des Fortepedals. Das Pedal langsam heben zu lernen, es als Halbpedal oder gar nur leicht zu betätigen, ist für die Übermittlung des Reichtums von Skrjabins Musik von höchster Bedeutung. Ich war immer wieder begeistert von den wunderbaren Klängen, die durch seine Harmonien geschaffen wurden.

Weil Skrjabin manchmal nachlässig mit der Notation und der Korrekturlesung seiner eigenen Arbeit war, nutzte ich eine Vielzahl von musikalischen Quellen, um Vorzeichen, Register, Dynamik, Pedale, Tempo-Angaben, Phrasierungen und MetronomHinweise zu überprüfen.

Meine jahrelange Beschäftigung mit Skrjabin hat mich ihm näher gebracht – dem Komponisten und Menschen, aber auch dem unvergleichlichen Pianisten. Jenseits jener wohlbekannten und glaubwürdigen Beschreibung eines größenwahnsinnigen Exzentrikers offenbarte sich Skrjabin durch seine Musik als ein tiefgründiger, subtiler und bewegender Komponist. Der Pianist Garrick Ohlsson hat die Musik von Skrjabin als „berauschend“ beschrieben. Ich stimme voll und ganz zu.

In der zweiten Hälfte des 19. Jahrhunderts entwickelten sich bemerkenswerte musikalische Fortschritte in den Werken solch innovativer Geister wie Liszt, Berlioz und Wagner. Ihre Pioniermusik hatte eine außerordentliche Einwirkung auf die der nachfolgenden Generation einschließlich Debussy, Mahler, Strauss und Skrjabin, der mit ihnen die moderne Musik-Ära begründete.

Dennoch betrachtet man allein Skrjabin als den transzendentalen Visionär: Seine Musik, ursprünglich im Stil von Chopin und Liszt, wandert durch die Bereiche von Debussy und Wagner und erschließt, die späte Romantik-Tradition endgültig verlassend, die bis dahin ungeahnte Kraft der Atonalität, der Bitonalität, der tonalen Ambiguität und Polyrhythmik. Die Entwicklung von Skrjabins bahnbrechendem kompositorischen Stil versteht man am besten durch seine Klavierwerke, die den größten Teil seines Oeuvres ausmachen. Neben den größeren Werken – seine zehn Sonaten, ein Konzert und eine Fantasie – experimentiert Skrjabin auf dem Gebiet der Klavier-Miniatur: Mazurkas, Impromptus, Walzer, Tondichtungen, eine Polonaise, Etüden, Nocturnes, kleine Stücke und die Präludien.

Skrjabins 90 Klavierpräludien veranschaulichen exemplarisch die markante Entwicklung seiner genialen Musik, seine idiosynkratische Philosophie und seine provokative Persönlichkeit.

Jedes Präludium enthält eine einzige Idee, die umgewandelt und variiert wird; zweite Themen werden meist weggelassen. Tolstoi beschrieb sie als “kurz wie ein Sperlingsschnabel”. Skrjabin konzipierte diese mikroskopisch kleinen Edelsteine oft in einem kurzen Moment der Inspiration während seiner zahlreichen Reisen durch ganz Europa. Der einflussreiche russische Musikverleger und Impresario Mitrofan Beljajew (1836-1904), Skrjabins lebenslanger Freund, forderte regelmäßig neue Kompositionen an. Vielleicht als Reaktion auf diesen Arbeitsdruck vernachlässigte Skrjabin in seinen sonst tadellos geschriebenen Manuskripten zahlreiche musikalische Details: Vorzeichen können widersprüchlich, Pedalanweisungen können spärlich oder unleserlich sein; Metronom-Angaben sind manchmal irreführend oder ungenau.

Die frühen Trois Morceaux, Op. 2, lassen Skrjabins Bewunderung für Chopin erkennen.

Komponiert im Jahre 1889, seinem ersten Jahr am Moskauer Konservatorium, ist das H-DurPräludium das einzige Präludium ohne Tempo oder Charakter-Angaben. Die atemberaubende Virtuosität des renommierten Pianisten Josef Lhévinne machte einen unauslöschlichen Eindruck auf Skrjabin. In einem Versuch, Lhévinnes Technik nachzuahmen, überdehnte Skrjabin seine rechte Hand aufs äußerste. So gezwungen, seine rechte Hand zu entlasten, entwickelte er eine unvergleichliche Technik für die linke Hand, die seinen kompositorischen Stil für die Dauer seiner Karriere bestimmen wird. Die Stücke Prelude und

Nocturne (1894) aus Op. 9 sind die ersten seiner Werke, in denen er seine Kunststücke mit der linken Hand unter Beweis stellt.

Während seiner frühen Beschäftigung mit Chopin schrieb Skrjabin Nocturnes, Impromptus, Präludien, Walzer, Mazurkas und Präludien. Später im Leben bestritt er, dass Chopin irgendeinen Einfluss auf seine Musik ausgeübt habe, aber schon Skrjabins Angewohnheit, mit der Partitur von Chopins Präludien Op. 28, unterm Kopfkissen zu schlafen, widerlegt diese Behauptung. Beljajew bat Skrjabin, zwei Serien von jeweils 24 Präludien zu komponieren, wahrscheinlich inspiriert von den 48 Präludien und Fugen von J.S. Bachs Wohltemperiertem Klavier. Skrjabin machte sich schließlich an diese Aufgabe, schloss aber nur 47 Präludien ab. Anmerkungen aus Skrjabins Originalmanuskript zeigen, dass Op. 11 sporadisch während mehrerer Jahre und an verschiedenen Orten geschrieben wurde. Die hier vorgestellte Anordnung entspricht nicht der chronologischen Reihenfolge der Komposition, sondern der im aufsteigenden Quintenzirkel erscheinenden Dur-Tonarten mit ihren parallelen Moll-Tonarten, ähnlich wie bei Chopins Opus 28.

Prelude Nr. 4 in e-Moll, das früheste Stück der Serie, wurde 1888 in Moskau geschrieben, als Skrjabin erst 16 Jahre alt war. In den verbleibenden 23 verfolgte Skrjabin kein spezifisches kompositorisches Verfahren. Diese Präludien entstanden spontan, entweder zu Hause oder während einer seiner Konzertreisen in Europa. Zwischen 1889 und 1896 komponierte er in Kiew, Dresden, Heidelberg, Witznau, Amsterdam und Paris. Skrjabin sagte von diesen Stücken: “Jedes Präludium ist eine kleine Komposition, die imstande ist, für sich allein zu stehen, unabhängig von den anderen”. In den Präludien Op. 13, 15 und 16 setzte Skrjabin das tonale Schema von Op. 11 fort, während Op. 17 diesem Verfahren nicht folgt.

Im Jahre 1897 heiratete Skrjabin Vera Iwanowna Isakowitsch, eine ausgebildete Pianistin, und begann eine sechsjährige Lehrtätigkeit am Moskauer Konservatorium. Diese Periode erwies sich sowohl in persönlicher Hinsicht als auch für sein kompositorisches Schaffen als unglücklich.

Skrjabin hatte wenig Freude an seiner Lehrtätigkeit, und es blieb ihm kaum Zeit zum Komponieren. Es gelang ihm zwar, seine ersten beiden Symphonien zu schreiben, aber er vollendete damals nur wenige Klavierwerke. 1903 gab er die Stellung auf. Die Vier Präludien Op. 22, die in den ersten Jahren seiner Lehrtätigkeit am Konservatorium entstanden, spiegeln weiterhin andeutungsweise Chopins Art wieder, aber gewisse melodische und harmonische Gesten läuten bereits einen neuen Stil ein. Dies ist 13 13

z.B. der Fall im Präludium Nr. 1, das ohne Auflösung auf dem Dominant-Akkord endet.

Die Zwei Präludien Op. 27 (1900), komponiert in der Zeit von Skrjabins heroischem Durchbruch – die auch seine ersten beiden Symphonien bestimmten – lassen bereits ein fortgeschrittenes harmonisches Vokabular erkennen. Präludium Nr. 1 nutzt das Intervall der Quart, sowohl melodisch als auch harmonisch. Dieses erste Präludium ist Patetico betitelt, ein Begriff, der bereits in seiner Etüde, Op. 8, Nr. 12 erschien. Es ist das einzige Mal, dass er ihn in den Präludien einsetzt. Das Stück ist voller Angst und Verzweiflung, massiver Akkorde und endet mit einem energischen Climax.

Nach dem Rücktritt vom Konservatorium begann für Skrjabin eine der fruchtbarsten und zukunftsweisendsten Kompositionszeiten seines Lebens. In den Präludien Op. 31, 33, 35, 37 und 39 nutzt Skrjabin die harmonischen Möglichkeiten des französischen Sext-Akkords, der ihm einen neuen und radikalen harmonischen Weg eröffnete. Die Rhythmen gewinnen an Schärfe; die Modulationen werden zunehmend unvorhersehbar, und es mehren sich überraschende Drehungen und Wendungen.

Solch unkonventionelle ausdrucksvolle Titel wie Con stravaganza (mit Extravaganz), Vagamente (vage), Ardito (kühn), Bellicoso (kriegerisch), werden typisch für Skrjabin. Nur selten noch greift er auf traditionelle Tempoangaben zurück. Das Präludium Op. 37, Nr. 2 stellt einen entscheidenden Moment in Skrjabins Stil dar: Die auf Terzen

basierende Harmonik beginnt nun, sich in Akkorde zu verwandeln, die aus geschichteten Quarten bestehen, und Klänge mit hinzugefügten Tonhöhen werden alltäglich. Viele der nachfolgenden Präludien führen diese harmonischen Eigenschaften bis zum Extrem.

In den frühen Jahren des 20. Jahrhunderts wurde das persönliche Leben von Skrjabin zunehmend ungeordnet. Er kam nach dem vorzeitigen Tod von Beljajew im Jahr 1904 ins Taumeln und wurde von finanziellen Schwierigkeiten geplagt. 1903 begann er eine heimliche Liebesbeziehung mit Tatiana de Schloezer, Schwester seines engen Freundes, dem Musikkritiker Boris de Schloezer, und 1904 verließ Skrjabin Vera und ihre drei Kinder für Tatiana.

Während dieser Zeit des persönlichen und künstlerischen Übergangs suchte Skrjabin nach neuen harmonischen, klangfarblichen und rhythmischen Ressourcen. Die Trois Morceaux, Op. 45 (1904) setzen diesen transformativen Prozess fort. Im Präludium Nr. 3 überwiegen Mehrklang-Akkorde mit Undezime und Tredezime, und harmonische Auflösungen werden noch mehrdeutiger und halten die Spannung bis zum Ende des Stückes.

Philosophie und Religion nahmen schon immer einen bedeutenden Teil in Skrjabins geistigem Leben ein. Er wurde von Pantheismus, Subjektivismus, Idealismus, Nietzsches Auffassung vom Übermensch, Solipsismus und mystischem 14 14

Individualismus inspiriert. Ab 1905 gewann seine Bekanntschaft mit Madame Helena Blavatsky in Brüssel, der Gründerin der Theosophischen Gesellschaft, einen tiefen Einfluss auf seine innere Welt. Die Präludien Op. 48 (1905) eröffnen eine neue skrjabineske Perspektive: Seine Musik, mit ihren gebrochenen Rhythmen und massiven dissonanten Akkorden, beginnt unruhiger zu klingen. Das Präludium Op. 49, Nr. 2 (1905) enthält eine Fülle von Mehrklang-Akkorden mit Undezime und Tredezime, die eine tiefgreifende harmonische Spannung erzeugen.

Diese harmonischen Merkmale begründeten Skrjabins reife harmonische Sprache. Das Präludium Op. 51, Nr. 2 (1906), Lugubre, ist eine Komposition mit vielen düsteren Klangfarben, Chromatik und einer rhythmischen Schreibweise, die dem ¾-Takt widerspricht und die Taktstriche verwischt.

In Skrjabins letzten Jahren wurden seine Tendenzen zum Größenwahn ausgeprägter und seine philosophischen Ideen subjektiver und verworrener. Seine Kompositionen, die bis dahin gänzlich von der Tonalität ausgegangen waren, entwickelten sich zu Zweideutigkeit und Atonalität.

Das Präludium von Op. 59 (1910) ist das erste ohne vorgegebene Tonart und das jedem Anflug von tonaler Auflösung abschwört. Quart-Akkorde und ihre Transpositionen repräsentieren die

neuen tonalen Zentren, und Rhythmen werden unregelmäßiger und spontaner.

In den beiden kontrastierenden Präludien Op. 67 (1912-13), dient der berühmte Mystische Akkord Skrjabins als kompositorischer Ausgangspunkt.

Diese neue skrjabineske harmonische Errungenschaft ist ein Aggregat von Noten, abgeleitet aus den Obertonreihen C, F#, Bb, E, A und D. Dieser Mystische Akkord wird das Fundament für die meisten von Skrjabins späten Kompositionen legen.

Er bildet eine Verbindung zwischen den Präludien Op. 67 und Op. 74 (1914).

Die Fünf Präludien Op. 74 representieren die letzte Serie von Stücken, die von Skrjabin vor seinem frühen Tod im Jahre 1915 geschrieben wurde. Ihre Basis ist ebenfalls der Mystische Akkord, weitergeführt im gleichen neuen Stil, der durch Transposition, Umkehrung und Hinzufügung von Akkord-fremden Tonhöhen auf verschiedene Weise präsentiert wird.

Eine Kassette mit Beethovens Klaviersonaten nahm mich sofort gefangen. Ich erinnere mich lebhaft daran, dass ich sie zu Hause in Galizien immer wieder anhörte und zu meiner Mutter sagte: „Das ist es, was ich tun möchte, wenn ich groß bin!“ Ich war ungefähr 9 Jahre alt, als ich mich entschied, Pianist zu werden. Nachdem ich drei Jahre am Konservatorium studiert hatte, bestritt ich meinen Lebensunterhalt während der nächsten Jahre ausschließlich damit, Boleros, Tangos und die Beatles in Hotels zu spielen. Mit dem Geld, das ich mir mit der Arbeit in einer Eisdiele verdiente, konnte ich mein erstes Klavier erwerben (und schlief wochenlang an seiner Seite). Ich absolvierte mein Studium an drei verschiedenen Universitäten in den Vereinigten Staaten, wo ich 14 Jahre blieb und mit Hilfe von Stipendien – wie dem Evelyn Storrs – ein Doktorat in Musical Arts, ein Masters in Musik und ein Artist Diploma erwarb. Während des Studiums an der University of Maryland hatte ich Gelegenheit, im Internationalen Klavierarchiv forschen zu können. Dort traf ich auf Donald Manildi und Max Brown, von denen ich sehr viel über Klaviermusik und Pianisten lernte. Diese Erfahrung bereicherte mein Leben als Musiker und Lehrer und brachte mich dazu, den Artikel The Teachings of Alfred Cortot für das Clavier Magazine zu veröffentlichen sowie Seminare über die russische Klavierschule anzubieten.

Dieser Zeitraum war entscheidend für meine persönliche Entwicklung. Durch die große Entfernung von zu Hause lernte ich, meine Sinne für neue Ideen zu öffnen und jeden Menschen und jede Kultur zu respektieren. Ich lebte auch in London, wo ich durch die Liebe meines Lebens, Andrea. Ich lebe in Spanien, wo ich unterrichte, Konzerte gebe und Vorlesungen abhalte. Mein Interesse an der Musikförderung konnte ich zum einen durch ein Festival, das ich in meiner Heimat ins Leben rief, und zum anderen als Leiter der Kammermusikabteilung für das Vianden International Festival in Luxemburg verwirklichen.

Ich hatte das Glück, an Festivals in Spanien, Portugal, Frankreich, Italien, Belgien, Tschechien, der Schweiz, Brasilien und in den Vereinigten Staaten teilzunehmen, und dort großartige Künstler und Köpfe zu treffen, die mich tief beeinflusst haben, besonders Luiz de Moura, Paul Ostrovsky, Michail Volchok, Carlos Rodríguez und Bert Lucarelli, mit dem zusammen ich We Can’t Always Play Waltzes schrieb. Ich hatte auch das Privileg, für Boris Berman, Garrick Ohlsson und Seymour Lipkin zu spielen. Entscheidenden Einfluss auf mein Leben gewann ein katholischer Priester, Fr. Thomas, der mich gelehrt hat, wie ich mein geistiges Leben vertiefe.

Ich habe im Laufe der Jahre gelernt, dass nur Flexibilität und Hartnäckigkeit, Ehrlichkeit mit sich selbst und die unbeirrbare Verfolgung der Verwirklichung unserer Träume dazu führen, ein professioneller Musiker zu werden. Ohne Klavier vermisse ich seine Schwingungen, seinen Klang und das Gefühl meiner Hände über den Tasten. Ich wünschte, ich hätte mehrere Leben zur Verfügung, um Klavier spielen zu können. Die Freude, mit dem Publikum zu kommunizieren, lässt mich jeden Tag üben und hilft mir, die vielen Hindernisse zu überwinden, die im Leben eines Pianisten auftreten.

ESP Mi primer encuentro con la música de Scriabin se produjo durante mis años de conservatorio en España, concretamente en 2000, al estudiar el Étude pathétique, op. 8, nº 12. Años más tarde, y gracias a las grabaciones del pianista ruso Vladimir Sofronitsky, comprendí el alcance de las aportaciones revolucionarias de Scriabin. Tras presentar mi tesis doctoral sobre estos magníficos preludios, continué tocándolos y estudiándolos durante años. El objetivo de este doble CD radica en presentar la parte sustancial de sus obras que ilustran la excepcional metamorfosis del estilo de Scriabin a lo largo de aproximadamente 26 años.

Esta experiencia me ha enriquecido como pianista, como pedagogo e incluso como ser humano. Explorar el mundo interior de Scriabin me ha obligado a profundizar mi comprensión de las posibilidades sonoras del piano. Este repertorio ha impulsado mi pianismo más allá de todo lo que creía posible. La búsqueda de Scriabin por lo inimaginable, lo esotérico y lo misterioso se refleja en su música, especialmente a partir de 1903.

Durante la preparación de este proyecto, al trabajar los aspectos técnicos y musicales de los preludios, a menudo me preguntaba: “¿Es esto realmente posible?” Particularmente exigentes fueron los bajos desplazados, que requieren un uso hábil del pedal y del legato. De hecho, pedalizar fue un asunto de capital importancia. La música de Scriabin exige un uso persistente y sutil de los pedales, particularmente del de resonancia. Aprender a soltar el pedal lentamente, a explotar los recursos del medio pedal o incluso al usarlo superficialmente, exigen una destreza primordial, necesaria para transmitir la riqueza de la música de Scriabin. A lo largo de mis años de dedicación a Scriabin me he acercado al compositor y al ser humano, pero también al incomparable pianista. Más allá de los estereotipos bien conocidos y certeros del excéntrico megalómano, Scriabin reveló su profundidad, sutileza y perspicacia a través de su música. Al tocarla, el pianista Garrick Ohlsson la calificó de “embriagadora”. Estoy totalmente de acuerdo con esta definición.

Durante la segunda mitad del siglo XIX se produjeron notables avances musicales en las obras de espíritus innovadores como Liszt, Berlioz y Wagner. Su música pionera ejerció un extraordinario impacto sobre la de la generación posterior, incluyendo a Debussy, Mahler, Strauss y Scriabin. Este último introdujo, junto a los demás, la era moderna de la música.

Sin embargo, en cuanto que visionario trascendental, Scriabin avanzó en solitario: su música, originada en el estilo de Chopin y Liszt, vaga por los reinos de Debussy y Wagner para finalmente abandonar la tradición romántica tardía y liberar el poder hasta entonces oculto de la atonalidad, bitonalidad, ambigüedad tonal y polirritmia. Las composiciones de Scriabin se cuentan entre las más innovadoras, idiosincrásicas y fascinantes de todos los tiempos.

Donde mejor se entiende el desarrollo del innovador estilo de composición de Scriabin es a través de sus obras para piano, las cuales conforman el grueso de su catálogo. Más allá de las grandes composiciones (sus diez sonatas publicadas, un concierto y una fantasía), Scriabin explora las posibilidades del piano en las miniaturas musicales: mazurcas, impromptus, valses, poemas, una polonesa, estudios, nocturnos y preludios. Los 90 preludios para piano de Scriabin ejemplifican la sorprendente evolución de su ingeniosa música, su idiosincrásica filosofía y su provocadora personalidad.

Cada preludio gira en torno a un único pensamiento musical, transformado y variado; raras veces aparecen segundos temas. Tolstoi dijo de los preludios que eran “cortos como el pico de un gorrión”. A menudo, Scriabin compuso estas joyas microscópicas en los momentos de inspiración durante sus numerosos viajes por Europa. El influyente editor de música y empresario ruso Mitrofán Beliáyev (1836-1904), su gran amigo, le exigía regularmente nuevas composiciones.

Tal vez debido a esta presión, Scriabin descuidó numerosos detalles musicales en los por lo demás impecables manuscritos: las alteraciones pueden ser incongruentes; las indicaciones de pedales escasean o son en ocasiones ilegibles; las indicaciones metronómicas son a veces engañosas o imprecisas.

Las tempranas Trois Morceaux, op. 2 muestran la admiración de Scriabin por Chopin. Compuestas en 1889 durante su primer año en el Conservatorio de Moscú, contienen un Preludio en si mayor, el único sin indicación de tempo o de expresión. El impresionante arte pianístico del renombrado virtuoso Josef Lhévinne dejó una huella indeleble en Scriabin. En un intento de imitar la técnica de Lhévinne, Scriabin forzó su mano derecha al máximo. Obligado así a recuperarla, desarrolló una incomparable técnica para la mano izquierda que marcaría su estilo a lo largo de toda su carrera.

Las piezas del op. 9, Preludio y Nocturno (1894), son las primeras en las que pone de manifiesto sus habilidades adquiridas para la mano izquierda.

Durante su temprana dedicación a la música de Chopin, Scriabin escribió nocturnos, impromptus, preludios, valses, mazurcas y preludios. Más tarde, negó que Chopin inspirara su música, aunque el hábito de dormir con la partitura de los Preludios op. 28 debajo de la almohada contradice esta afirmación. Beliáyev le pidió a Scriabin que compusiera dos series de 24 preludios, probablemente inspiradas en los 48 preludios y fugas de El clave bien temperado de J.S. Bach.

Scriabin al fin abordó esta tarea, pero sólo escribió 47 preludios. Beliáyev publicó los primeros 24 como Preludios op. 11 (1888-1896); los 23 restantes se reunieron en cuatro ediciones separadas: seis en el op. 13, cinco en el op. 15, cinco en el op. 16 y siete en el op. 17.

Scriabin afirmó de estas piezas: “Cada preludio es una pequeña composición independiente de las demás”. En los Preludios opp. 13, 15 y 16 empleó nuevamente el esquema tonal del op. 11, mientras que en el op. 17 lo abandona.

Diversas anotaciones en el manuscrito original de Scriabin muestran que el op. 11 surgió esporádicamente a lo largo de varios años y en varios lugares diferentes. El orden aquí presentado no coincide con el cronológico, sino que sigue el círculo ascendente de quintas de las tonalidades mayores y sus relativos menores, similar al del op. 28 de Chopin.

En 1897, Scriabin contrajo matrimonio con Vera Ivanovna Isakovich, una pianista consumada, además de iniciar su labor docente en el Conservatorio de Moscú. Esta actividad la desarrollaría durante seis años que resultarían ser insatisfactorios para el compositor, tanto en el ámbito personal como en el creativo. Scriabin no disfrutaba de la enseñanza y tenía poco tiempo para componer, aunque sí logró concluir sus dos primeras sinfonías junto a un reducido número de piezas para piano por aquel entonces. En 1903 renunció al puesto en el conservatorio. Los Cuatro preludios op. 22, que coinciden con sus primeros años en el conservatorio, tienen un cierto aire chopiniano, aunque también albergan algunos giros melódicos y armónicos que anuncian el nuevo estilo. Tal es el caso del Preludio nº 1 que concluye sobre el acorde de dominante.

El Preludio nº 4 en mi menor, la pieza más temprana de la serie, data de 1888. Scriabin lo compuso en Moscú a los 16 años de edad. Para los 23 restantes no siguió ningún patrón compositivo específico.

Estos preludios surgieron espontáneamente, en su casa o durante las giras por Europa. Así, entre 1889 y 1896 algunos vieron la luz en Kiev,

Los Dos preludios op. 27 (1900) compuestos durante el período de la heroica afirmación de Scriabin (determinante también para sus dos primeras sinfonías), muestran un avanzado vocabulario armónico. Patético, un término que ya había aparecido en su Estudio op. 8, nº 12; esta es la única vez que lo emplea en los preludios. La pieza rebosa de angustia y desesperación, de densos acordes y culmina en un poderoso clímax.

empeora. En 1903 inicia una aventura amorosa con Tatiana de Schloezer, la hermana de su íntimo amigo, el crítico musical Boris de Schloezer. En 1904, Scriabin abandona a Vera y a sus tres hijos para permanecer al lado de Tatiana.

Después de renunciar al conservatorio, Scriabin inició uno de los períodos compositivos más fructíferos y visionarios de su vida. En los Preludios opp. 31, 33, 35, 37 y 39 explora las posibilidades armónicas inherentes al acorde de sexta francesa que le abre un horizonte armónico nuevo y radical.

Los ritmos ganan en nitidez; las modulaciones se vuelven cada vez más impredecibles y abundan asombrosos giros y vueltas. Los títulos expresivos y no convencionales como Con stravaganza (con extravagancia), Vagamente (vago), Ardito (audaz), Bellicoso (belicoso) comienzan a ser la norma en Scriabin. De aquí en adelante, raras veces recurriría a las indicaciones de tempo tradicionales. El Preludio op. 37, nº 2 representa un momento crucial en el estilo de Scriabin: la armonía basada en terceras comienza a transmutarse en acordes construidos por cuartas superpuestas, dejando que proliferen las sonoridades con notas agregadas. Muchos de los preludios que aún quedaban por escribir explotarían al máximo tales recursos armónicos.

Durante este tiempo de transición personal y artística, Scriabin buscó nuevos recursos armónicos, tímbricos y rítmicos. Las Trois Morceaux, op. 45 (1904) siguen esta línea transformadora. En el Preludio no 3 abundan los acordes de undécima y decimotercera, y las resoluciones armónicas se vuelven aún más ambiguas, manteniendo la tensión hasta el final de la pieza.

En los primeros años del siglo XX, la situación personal de Scriabin se vuelve cada vez más complicada. Afectado por la prematura muerte de Beliáyev en 1904, su situación económica

La filosofía y la religión habían sido desde siempre una parte significativa de la vida intelectual de Scriabin, inspirado por el panteísmo, el subjetivismo, el idealismo, la teoría del superhombre de Nietzsche, el solipsismo y el individualismo místico. A partir de 1905, el contacto en Bruselas con Madame Helena Blavatsky, fundadora de la Sociedad Teosófica, tendría un profundo impacto en su mundo interior.

Los Preludios op. 48 (1905) revelan una nueva perspectiva scriabiniana del mundo: su música, con sus ritmos rotos y sus densos acordes disonantes, comienza a sonar más inestable. El Preludio op. 49, nº 2 (1905) contiene una profusión de acordes de undécima y decimotercera que crean una penetrante tensión armónica. Estas características armónicas fueron las que generaron el lenguaje armónico maduro de Scriabin.

El Preludio op. 51, nº 2 (1906), Lúgubre, posee muchas sonoridades oscuras, cromatismos y una escritura rítmica que desmiente la indicación de ¾, difuminando las barras de compás.

En los últimos años de vida se acentuaron las tendencias megalómanas de Scriabin, al tiempo que sus ideas filosóficas se volvieron más personales y enrevesadas. Sus composiciones, que se habían alejado totalmente de la tonalidad convencional, evolucionaron hacia la ambigüedad y atonalidad.

El Preludio op. 59 (1910) es el primero que carece de una armadura y se aleja de todo lo que pudiera parecerse a una conclusión tonal. Los acordes de cuartas y sus transposiciones representan los nuevos centros tonales, y los ritmos se vuelven más irregulares y espontáneos.

Los Cinco preludios op. 74 representan el último conjunto de piezas escrito por Scriabin antes de su prematura muerte en 1915. Conforme al nuevo estilo, su base también está formada por el acorde místico, presentado de varias maneras por medio de la transposición, la inversión y las notas agregadas a los acordes con sus estructuras fundamentales.

Un casete con sonatas para piano de Beethoven me cautivó de inmediato. Recuerdo vívidamente que lo puse una y otra vez en mi casa en Galicia, comentándole a mi madre que “¡eso es lo que quiero hacer cuando sea mayor!” Tenía unos nueve años y decidí ser pianista. Después de estudiar durante tres años en el conservatorio, me gané la vida tocando boleros, tangos y a los Beatles en hoteles. Con el dinero ahorrado después de trabajar en una heladería, me compré mi primer piano (y dormí a su lado durante semanas). Luego proseguí con mis estudios en tres universidades estadounidenses diferentes. En los EEUU permanecí durante catorce años y obtuve un doctorado y un máster en música, además del diploma de artista con la ayuda de becas como la Evelyn Storrs. Mientras estudiaba en la Universidad de Maryland, tuve la oportunidad de investigar en los International Piano Archives. Ahí conocí a Donald Manildi y Max Brown, quienes me enseñaron mucho sobre la música escrita para piano y los pianistas. Esta experiencia enriqueció mi vida como músico y pedagogo, y me animó a publicar el artículo Las enseñanzas de Alfred Cortot en la revista Clavier Magazine, así como a ofrecer seminarios sobre la Escuela Rusa de Piano.

Este período fue crucial para mi desarrollo personal. El hecho de estar tan lejos de casa me enseñó a abrir mi mente a nuevas ideas y a respetar a cada persona y cultura con las que me he encontrado. También viví en Londres, donde fui siguiendo al amor de mi vida, Andrea. Vivo en España, donde imparto clases, toco recitales y ofrezco cursos. Mi interés en promocionar la música cristalizó en un festival que creé en mi país y como Director de Música de Cámara del Festival Internacional de Vianden en Luxemburgo.

He tenido la suerte de participar en festivales en España, Portugal, Francia, Italia, Bélgica, República Checa, Suiza, Brasil y Estados Unidos, donde conocí a artistas increíbles y mentes que me influenciaron profundamente, muy en especial Luiz de Moura, Paul Ostrovsky, Mikhail Volchok, Carlos Rodríguez y Bert Lucarelli, con quien escribí We Can’t Always Play Waltzes.

También tuve el privilegio de tocar para Boris Berman, Garrick Ohlsson y Seymour Lipkin. Un sacerdote católico, el Padre Tomás, tuvo una influencia decisiva sobre mí al enseñarme a profundizar en mi vida espiritual.

Con los años aprendí que debemos ser flexibles y tenaces para convertirnos en un músico profesional, honestos con nosotros mismos, y perseguir nuestros sueños. Cuando estoy lejos del piano echo de menos sus vibraciones, su sonido y la sensación de mis manos sobre las teclas. Ojalá pudiera seguir tocando el piano durante muchas más vidas. Mi deseo de comunicarme con la audiencia me obliga a practicar todos los días y me empuja a superar los muchos obstáculos que se presentan a lo largo de la vida de un pianista.
