Often, when talking about Beethoven’s music, there seems to be little room for levity or frivolity, as if a personality so tenaciously committed to his creative work could not also harbour a playful dimension.

Unlike Mozart or Schubert, Beethoven had a limited output of music for four hands, created only at specific moments in his life. However, this chamber formation allowed the composer to reconcile a sophisticated da salotto intimacy with his idealised symphonic aesthetic. In this sense, the Sonata as well as the Variations and the Marches, conceived within a reduced formal framework, show prototypical aspects of his future compositions.

In this production, Beethoven reveals a rather unexplored facet as a transcriber of his own music through two antagonistically emblematic works: the Quintet, Op. 16 and the legendary Grosse Fuge, Op. 134.

Although Beethoven declared that “a score is never more correctly transcribed than when it is the author himself who transcribes it”, it is not possible to affirm the exact authorship of the arrangement of the Quintet, Op. 16, which the Simrock edition attributes to Beethoven. Probably authorised by the author himself, this transcription represents for us a real revelation which, by its functionality and beauty, significantly increases the repertoire intended for this ensemble.

In the case of the Grosse Fuge, there is no need for much ado. If its version for string quartet is, even nowadays, reckless and enigmatic, the complex voicing and the entangled arrangement of the hands in its four-hands version verge on the utopian. Without detracting from the work, this challenge has become, for us, a great contrapuntal exploration that fuses past and present, a polymorphous work that has encouraged us to seek a renewed cantabile.

Through this sonorous testament, Beethoven definitively breaks the bounds of the salotto, raising fourhands piano to the most extreme musical synthesis.

BEETHOVEN The Complete Works for Piano Four Hands Despite the difficulties related to the global COVID-19 pandemic, the 250th anniversary of Ludwig van Beethoven’s birth has been celebrated worldwide with great enthusiasm and has been extended, perforce, until September 2021. Two centuries later, his music is still renowned for its groundbreaking expressive power and revolutionary character, making Beethoven a true icon of modern humanism. Although the symphonies, piano sonatas, concertos and chamber music constitute Beethoven’s main areas of creative development, his entire musical output has been studied in depth, providing new details about his life and his peculiar aesthetic-philosophical vision. Even his tiny, rarely performed output for four-hands piano manages to capture the main features of Beethoven’s musical evolution, from his early days to the end of his life.

The production of original or transcribed works for four-hand duo increased exponentially throughout the 19th century. Bourgeois society wanted to play this type of repertoire and the publishing world demanded it from composers. Unlike Czerny, Dussek, Hummel, Kuhlau, Moscheles or Schubert, Beethoven seems to have had little interest in piano four hands and only composes for this format on five occasions. He composed four original works: two cycles of variations, a sonata and a triptych of marches, and he makes an official transcription of the Grosse Fuge.

It is not exactly known whether the Eight Variations on a theme by Count Waldstein, WoO 67 were

composed in Bonn in 1791 or whether they coincided with his arrival in Vienna in 1792. In any case, it seems certain that the theme used is an original by Count Ferdinand Ernst Gabriel von Waldstein, Beethoven’s friend and benefactor, although reworked by the composer. In 1791 Beethoven had already composed a work for Count Waldstein, the Ritterballet, WoO 1, although it was only in 1804 that he would consecrate the Count’s memory to posterity when dedicating his Piano Sonata, Op. 53. The theme used is simple and possesses a certain elegance, although the quaternary subdivision indicated in the score, instead of a binary one which would probably be more in keeping with the phrasing, is surprising.

Furthermore, the incipit has a certain affinity with the theme ‘Les Hommes Pieusement’ from the opéra-comique Les pèlerins de la Mecque ou La rencontre imprévue by C.W. Gluck. It is interesting to note that, in the last two variations, Beethoven uses a freer, rhapsodic structure alternating drama, frenzy and long cadential moments, similar to that of Mozart’s variations, K. 455, using the Gluckian theme mentioned above.

Very little is known about the Sonata in D major, Op. 6 (1796/97). In tonality and character it is reminiscent of Mozart’s Sonata, K. 381 (1772), although the main theme of the first movement seems to be the forerunner of the famous incipit of Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony. Its ‘bifronte’ (two-part) structure is unusual, although Beethoven also composed two sonatas for cello and piano (Op. 5) that share the same format in the same period. Beethoven would again compose sonatas in two movements on other 4

occasions (Cello Sonata Op. 102, No. 1; Piano Sonatas Op. 49, No. 1 and No. 2; Op. 54, Op. 78, Op. 90 and Op. 111). The Op. 6 Sonata could be understood as a small gift for a pupil or simply as a didactic sonatina, as in the case of the Op. 49 sonatas.

This recording includes, for the first time, the transcription for piano four hands of the Quintet in E-flat major for piano and winds, Op. 16 (1796).

Beethoven never liked this work (Charles Rosen called it “classicising” rather than “classical”), but its popularity led it to be transcribed for various combinations. Today, only the transcription for piano and string trio of 1801 (Op. 16b) is officially considered to be the composer’s work. In any case, it was very common for Beethoven to authorise publishers to arrange his works in his name. Although the authorship of the arrangement for piano four hands is not explicitly known, Beethoven’s friend and publisher Nicolaus Simrock published it in 1824 as the composer’s original.

The Six Variations on ‘Ich denke dein’, WoO 74 (1799/1803) were originally intended as a cycle of four variations (Theme and Variation I, II, V and VI), in keeping with the stanzas of Goethe’s poem (Nähe des Geliebten, 1795) to which the theme refers. The first stanza is included in the theme as if it were a true Lied: Nähe des Geliebten Ich denke dein, wenn mir der Sonne Schimmer Vom Meere strahlt; Ich denke dein, wenn sich des Mondes Flimmer In Quellen malt.

The Nearness of the Beloved I think of you, when the sunlight shines from the sea; I think of you, when the soft moonlight reflects on the waters.

They were included in Therese and Josephine Brunsvik’s music album during the two countesses’ stay in Vienna in May 1799. From that time until his death, Beethoven maintained a close relationship with the whole family. Between July and August 1803, Beethoven decided to extend the cycle by adding two more variations before publishing them.

Within the musical output of various composers of the Austrian Empire it is easy to find countless marches, very often stripped of their military value and created as small works of art, as in the case of Schubert’s marches. Throughout Beethoven’s output, it is also possible to find some isolated cases such as the famous ‘Turkish March’ from the incidental music of The Ruins of Athens, Op. 113 (1811), or the ‘Funeral March’ from the Symphony No. 3, ‘Eroica’, and the ‘Funeral March on the Death of a Hero’ from the Piano Sonata, Op. 26.

The Three Marches for piano four hands, Op. 45 were offered to the Breitkopf und Härtel publishing house in 1803, dedicated to Princess Maria Esterhàzy, and are characterised by a clear all’ungherese style, which can be deduced by the sudden changes between major and minor modes, by the unusual modulations (B-flat to D-flat in the second march) and by the improvisatory spirit of the inner sections. They represent an unusual 5

Beethoven, very “alla moda”, but immersed in a sophisticated orchestral texture. Speaking of this triptych and other new compositions, Beethoven wrote in a letter to his publisher: “Everything I send you is completely new. It is sad that many of my old and most embarrassing works are being sold or stolen”.

Beethoven was undoubtedly one of the most chimerical and, in many ways, one of the most modern composers in the history of music. His manner of creating has always been meticulous and is the result of a constructive process; he is a child of the Enlightenment. It is extraordinary that the Grosse Fuge, Op. 134 (1826), one of the most difficult compositions for both performers and audiences to understand, should end up being destined for the seemingly least introspective ensemble: the four-hand duo. This composition was originally conceived as the last movement of the Quartet, Op. 130, but because of its daring harmonic language and unusual structure, it was removed from the quartet. In this way the fugue became an autonomous work. The fourhand version was produced at the request of the publisher Mathias Artaria and was performed by the composer himself, who would not accept other transcribers to perform it.

According to the scholar Warren Kirkendale (in The ‘Great Fugue’, Op. 133: Beethoven’s ‘Art of Fugue’,

1963) the complex structure of this fugue can be summarised as follows: 1. Overture: introduces the main formats of the first theme (x), setting them out in reverse order of their appearance in the fugue (x4, x3, x2, x1); 2. Section A (Allegro): double fugue on x1 and the dotted second theme (y); 3. Section B (Meno mosso moderato): double fugato on x2 and new countersubject (z), framed and interrupted by the homophonic entries of the z theme; 4. Section C: March/Scherzo episode on x3 (diminution of x2), vaguely fugato; 5. Section D: fugue on x4 (augmentation of x2), followed by a free fantasia; 6. Section B’: repetition of B followed by a transition; 7. Section C’: repetition of C; 8. Coda: free homophonic section followed by a coda including reminiscences of all the previous material.

The Grosse Fuge is a clear example of the stylistic polymorphism that characterises Beethoven in his later years. It is a great baroque fresco destined for the generations of the future which, as the composer himself confirms, is not limited to the performance of a fugue, but extends to introducing new poetics into traditional musical forms.

Oft, wenn man über Beethovens Musik spricht, scheint es wenig Raum für Leichtigkeit oder Frivolität zu geben, als ob eine Person, die sich so hartnäckig ihrer kreativen Arbeit verschrieben hat, nicht auch eine spielerische Dimension beherbergen könnte. Im Gegensatz zu Mozart oder Schubert schuf Beethoven nur eine begrenzte Anzahl von Klavierstücken zu vier Händen, die er auch in ganz spezifischen Momenten seines Lebens geschrieben hatte. Diese kammermusikalische Besetzung erlaubte es dem Komponisten jedoch, eine raffinierte da salotto-Intimität mit seiner idealisierten symphonischen Ästhetik in Einklang zu bringen. In diesem Sinne zeigen sowohl die Sonate als auch die Variationen und die Märsche, die in einem reduzierten formalen Rahmen konzipiert wurden, prototypische Aspekte seiner zukünftigen Kompositionen.

Auf dieser CD offenbart Beethoven durch zwei antagonistisch-emblematische Werke eine eher unbekannte Facette als Bearbeiter seiner eigenen Musik: das Quintett, Op. 16 und die legendäre Große Fuge, Op. 134.

Obwohl Beethoven erklärte, dass eine Partitur niemals richtiger bearbeitet wird, als wenn es der Autor selbst ist, der sie bearbeitet, ist es nicht möglich, die genaue Urheberschaft der Bearbeitung des Quintetts, Op. 16, die die Simrock-Ausgabe Beethoven zuschreibt, zu bestätigen. Wahrscheinlich vom Autor selbst autorisiert, stellt diese Transkription für uns eine echte Offenbarung dar, die durch ihre Funktionalität und Schönheit das für dieses Ensemble vorgesehene Repertoire erheblich erweitert.

Im Falle der Großen Fuge gibt es nicht viel zu sagen. Wirkt die Fassung für Streichquartett selbst heutzutage waghalsig und enigmatisch, so grenzen die komplexen Akkordstellungen und die verschlungenen Positionen der Hände in ihrer vierhändigen Version ans Utopische. Ohne das Werk schmälern zu wollen, ist diese Herausforderung für uns zu einer großen kontrapunktischen Errungenschaft geworden, die Vergangenheit und Gegenwart verschmelzen lässt, ein polymorphes Werk, das uns ermutigt hat, ein erneuertes cantabile zu suchen.

Durch dieses klangvolle Vermächtnis sprengt Beethoven endgültig die Grenzen (Boundless) des salotto und erhebt das Klavierspiel zu vier Händen zur extremsten musikalischen Synthese.

BEETHOVEN Das Gesamtwerk für Klavier zu vier Händen Trotz der Schwierigkeiten im Zusammenhang mit der globalen COVID-19-Pandemie wurde der 250.

Geburtstag von Ludwig van Beethoven weltweit mit großer Begeisterung gefeiert und bis September 2021 verlängert. Zwei Jahrhunderte später ist seine Musik immer noch für ihre bahnbrechende Ausdruckskraft und ihren revolutionären Charakter bekannt und macht Beethoven zu einer wahren Ikone des modernen Humanismus. Obwohl die Sinfonien, Klaviersonaten, Konzerte und die gesamte Kammermusik Beethovens Hauptbereiche der kreativen Entwicklung darstellen, ist sein gesamtes musikalisches Schaffen eingehend untersucht worden, was neue Details über sein Leben und seine eigentümliche ästhetisch-philosophische Vision liefert. Selbst sein kleines, selten aufgeführtes Werk für Klavier zu vier Händen schafft es, die Grundzüge von Beethovens musikalischer Entwicklung zu erfassen, von seinen frühen Tagen bis zum Ende seines Lebens.

Im Laufe des 19. Jahrhunderts nahm die Produktion von originalen oder transkribierten Werken für vierhändiges Duo exponentiell zu. Die bürgerliche Gesellschaft wollte diese Art von Repertoire spielen und die Verlagswelt forderte es von den Komponisten.

Im Gegensatz zu Czerny, Dussek, Hummel, Kuhlau, Moscheles oder Schubert scheint Beethoven wenig Interesse an diesem Format gehabt zu haben und komponiert nur bei fünf Gelegenheiten für Klavier zu vier Händen. Er komponierte vier Originalwerke: zwei Variationszyklen, eine Sonate und ein Triptychon von Märschen; und er macht eine offizielle Transkription der Großen Fuge.

Es ist nicht genau bekannt, ob die Acht Variationen über ein Thema des Grafen von Waldstein, WoO 67, 1791 in Bonn komponiert wurden oder ob sie bereits mit seiner Ankunft in Wien 1792 zusammenfallen. Dennoch scheint sicher zu sein, dass das verwendete Thema ein Original von Graf Ferdinand Ernst Gabriel von Waldstein, Beethovens Freund und Gönner, ist, wenn auch vom Komponisten umgearbeitet. Beethoven hatte bereits 1791 ein Werk für den Grafen Waldstein komponiert, die Musik zu einem Ritterballett, WoO 1, obwohl er erst 1804 mit der Widmung seiner Klaviersonate Op. 53 das Andenken des Grafen der Nachwelt weihen würde.

Das verwendete Thema ist einfach und besitzt eine gewisse Eleganz, obwohl die in der Partitur angegebene quaternäre Unterteilung anstelle einer binären, die wahrscheinlich besser zur Phrasierung passen würde, überraschend ist. Andererseits hat das Incipit eine gewisse Affinität zum Thema „Les Hommes Pieusement” aus der Komischen Oper Les pèlerins de la Mecque ou La rencontre imprévue von C.W. Gluck. Interessant ist, dass Beethoven in den letzten beiden Variationen eine freiere, rhapsodische Struktur verwendet, in der sich Dramatik, Raserei und lange Kadenzen abwechseln, ähnlich wie in Mozarts Variationen KV 455, die das oben erwähnte Glucksche Thema verwenden. Über die Sonate in D-Dur, Op. 6 (1796-1797) ist sehr wenig bekannt. In Tonalität und Charakter erinnert sie an Mozarts Sonate KV 381 (1772), obwohl das Hauptthema des ersten Satzes der Vorgänger des berühmten Incipits von Beethovens Fünfter Symphonie zu sein scheint. Ihre „bifronte” (zweiteilige) Struktur ist ungewöhnlich, obwohl Beethoven im 9

gleichen Zeitraum auch zwei Sonaten für Cello und Klavier (Op.5) komponierte, die das gleiche Format aufweisen. Beethoven würde bei anderen Gelegenheiten wieder Sonaten in zwei Sätzen komponieren (Cellosonate Op. 102, Nr. 1; Klaviersonaten Op. 49, Nr. 1 und Nr. 2; Op. 54, Op. 78, Op. 90 und Op. 111).

Die Sonate Op. 6 könnte als kleines Geschenk für einen Schüler oder einfach als didaktische Sonatine verstanden werden, wie im Falle der Sonaten Op. 49.

Die vorliegende Aufnahme enthält erstmals die Transkription für Klavier zu vier Händen des Quintetts Es-Dur für Klavier und Bläser, Op. 16 (1796).

Beethoven mochte dieses Werk nie (Charles Rosen nannte es eher „klassizistisch” als „klassisch”), aber seine Popularität führte dazu, dass es für verschiedene Besetzungen bearbeitet wurde. Heute gilt nur die Transkription für Klavier und Streichtrio von 1801 (Op. 16b) offiziell als vom Komponisten stammend. In jedem Fall war es durchaus üblich, dass Beethoven Verleger autorisierte, seine Werke in seinem Namen zu bearbeiten. Obwohl die Urheberschaft der Transkription für Klavier zu vier Händen nicht explizit bekannt ist, veröffentlichte Beethovens Freund und Verleger Nicolaus Simrock sie 1824 als das Original des Komponisten.

Die Sechs Variationen über „Ich denke dein”, WoO 74 (1799/1803) waren ursprünglich als Zyklus von vier Variationen (Thema und Variation I, II, V und VI) gedacht, entsprechend den Strophen von Goethes Gedicht (Nähe des Geliebten, 1795), auf das sich das Thema bezieht. Die erste Strophe ist in das Thema einbezogen, als wäre sie ein echtes Lied:

Nähe des Geliebten Ich denke dein, wenn mir der Sonne Schimmer Vom Meere strahlt; Ich denke dein, wenn sich des Mondes Flimmer In Quellen malt.

Sie wurden in Therese und Josephine Brunsviks Musikalbum während des Aufenthalts der beiden Gräfinnen in Wien im Mai 1799 aufgenommen.

Von dieser Zeit an bis zu seinem Tod unterhielt Beethoven eine enge Beziehung zu der gesamten Familie. Zwischen Juli und August 1803, vor der Veröffentlichung, beschloss Beethoven, den Zyklus um zwei weitere Variationen zu erweitern.

Im musikalischen Schaffen verschiedener Komponisten des österreichischen Kaiserreichs lassen sich zahllose Märsche finden, die sehr oft ihres militärischen Charakters entkleidet und als kleine Kunstwerke geschaffen wurden, wie im Fall von Schuberts Märschen. Auch in Beethovens Schaffen lassen sich einige Einzelfälle finden, wie der berühmte „Türkische Marsch” aus der Bühnenmusik zu Die Ruinen von Athen, Op. 113 (1811), oder der „Trauermarsch” aus der Symphonie Nr. 3, „Eroica”, und der „Trauermarsch auf den Tod eines Helden” aus der Klaviersonate, Op. 26.

Die Drei Märsche für Klavier zu vier Händen, Op. 45, gewidmet der Fürstin Maria Esterhàzy, wurden 1803 dem Verlag Breitkopf und Härtel angeboten und zeichnen sich durch einen klaren all’ungherese-Stil aus, was sich an den plötzlichen Wechseln zwischen Dur- und Moll-Tonarten, an den ungewöhnlichen Modulationen (B nach Des im zweiten Marsch) und 10

am improvisatorischen Geist der inneren Teile ablesen lässt. Sie repräsentieren einen ungewöhnlichen Beethoven, sehr „alla moda”, aber eingebettet in eine ausgefeilte orchestrale Textur. Über dieses Triptychon und andere neue Kompositionen schrieb Beethoven in einem Brief an seinen Verleger: „Alles was ich ihnen hier antrage ist ganz neu – da leider so viele fatale alte Sachen von mir verkauft und gestohlen werden”.

Beethoven war zweifellos einer der chimärenhaftesten und in vielerlei Hinsicht auch einer der modernsten Komponisten der Musikgeschichte. Seine Art des Schaffens war immer akribisch und ist das Ergebnis eines konstruktiven Prozesses; ein Kind der Aufklärung. Es ist außergewöhnlich, dass die Große Fuge, Op. 134 (1826), eine der für Interpreten und Publikum am schwierigsten zu verstehenden Kompositionen, ausgerechnet für das scheinbar am wenigsten introspektive Ensemble bestimmt ist: das vierhändige Duo. Diese Komposition war ursprünglich als letzter Satz des Quartetts Op. 130 konzipiert, wurde aber wegen seiner gewagten harmonischen Sprache und ungewöhnlichen Struktur aus dem Quartett entfernt. Auf diese Weise wurde die Fuge zu einem autonomen Werk. Die vierhändige Fassung entstand auf Wunsch des Verlegers Mathias Artaria und wurde vom Komponisten selbst aufgeführt, da er andere Bearbeiter für die Aufführung nicht akzeptieren wollte.

Laut dem Musikhistoriker Warren Kirkendale (in der „The Great Fugue”, Op. 133: Beethoven’s „Art of

Fugue”, 1963) lässt sich die komplexe Struktur dieser Fuge wie folgt zusammenfassen: 1. Ouvertüre: führt die Hauptmerkmale des ersten Themas (x) ein, wobei sie in umgekehrter Reihenfolge ihres Auftretens in der Fuge (x4, x3, x2, x1) aufgeführt werden; 2. Abschnitt A (Allegro): Doppelfuge über x1 und das punktierte zweite Thema (y); 3. Abschnitt B (Meno mosso moderato): Doppelfuge auf x2 und neues Gegenthema (z), umrahmt und unterbrochen von den homophonen Einsätzen des z-Themas; 4. Abschnitt C: Marsch/Scherzo-Episode auf x3 (Diminution von x2), leicht fugiert; 5. Abschnitt D: Fuge auf x4 (Augmentation von x2), gefolgt von einer freien Fantasie; 6. Abschnitt B’: Wiederholung von B, gefolgt von einer Überleitung; 7. Abschnitt C’: Wiederholung von C; 8. Coda: freier homophoner Abschnitt, gefolgt von einer Coda mit Reminiszenzen an das gesamte vorherige Material.

Die Große Fuge ist ein deutliches Beispiel für den stilistischen Polymorphismus, der Beethoven in seinen späteren Jahren charakterisiert. Sie ist ein großes barockes Fresko, das für die Generationen der Zukunft bestimmt ist und sich, wie der Komponist selbst bestätigt, nicht auf die Darstellung einer Fuge beschränkt, sondern sich auf die Einführung neuer Poetik in traditionelle musikalische Formen erstreckt.

Nachdem sie beschlossen hatten, ein Duo zu bilden, begannen sie eine Reihe von Rezitalen und Konzerten, in denen sie Werke von Mozart und Czerny mit dem Portugiesischen Kammerorchester, dem Kammerorchester von Cascais & Oeiras und dem Madeira Classical Orchestra aufführten. Quand on évoque la musique de Beethoven, légèreté et frivolité sont rarement les premiers mots qui viennent à l’esprit, comme si une personnalité si profondément absorbée par son travail de création ne pouvait pas révéler également une dimension ludique. Contrairement à Mozart ou Schubert, Beethoven a offert une production limitée de musique à quatre mains, créée uniquement à des moments précis de sa vie. Cependant, cette formation de chambre a permis au compositeur de concilier une intimité da salotto sophistiquée avec son esthétique symphonique idéalisée. En ce sens, la Sonate ainsi que les Variations et les Marches, conçues dans un cadre formel réduit, montrent des aspects prototypiques de ses futures compositions.

Dans cette production, Beethoven révèle une facette assez inexplorée en tant que transcripteur de sa propre musique à travers deux œuvres emblématiques opposées : le Quintette, op. 16 et la légendaire Grosse Fuge, op. 134. Bien que Beethoven ait déclaré qu’une « partition n’est jamais mieux transcrite que par l’auteur lui-même », il n’est pas possible d’affirmer la paternité exacte de l’arrangement du Quintette, op. 16, que l’édition Simrock attribue à Beethoven. Probablement autorisée par l’auteur lui-même, cette transcription représente pour nous une véritable révélation qui, par sa fonctionnalité et sa beauté, augmente considérablement le répertoire destiné à cette formation.

Dans le cas de la Grosse Fuge, il n’est guère besoin de trop en dire. Si sa version pour quatuor à cordes est, encore de nos jours, intrépide et énigmatique, la sonorité complexe et l’arrangement enchevêtré des mains dans sa version à quatre mains frisent l’utopie. Sans nuire à l’œuvre, ce défi est devenu, pour nous, une grande exploration contrapuntique qui fusionne le passé et le présent, une œuvre polymorphe qui nous a incités à rechercher un cantabile renouvelé.

Comme le suggère le titre de cet album (Boundless), par ce testament sonore, Beethoven brise définitivement les limites du salotto et élève le piano à quatre mains vers la synthèse musicale la plus extrême.

BEETHOVEN Les œuvres complètes pour piano à quatre mains Malgré les difficultés liées à la pandémie mondiale du COVID-19, le 250ème anniversaire de la naissance de Ludwig van Beethoven a été célébré dans le monde entier avec grand enthousiasme et a été prolongé, a fortiori, jusqu’en septembre 2021. Deux siècles plus tard, sa musique est toujours réputée pour sa puissance expressive et son caractère révolutionnaire, faisant de Beethoven un véritable géant de l’humanisme moderne. Bien que ses symphonies, sonates pour piano, concertos et toute sa musique de chambre constituent les principaux vecteurs du développement créatif de Beethoven, toute sa production musicale a été étudiée en profondeur, fournissant de nouveaux détails sur sa vie et son unique vision esthétique et philosophique.

Même sa toute petite production pour piano à quatre mains, rarement exécutée, parvient à capturer les principales caractéristiques de l’évolution musicale de Beethoven, de ses débuts à la fin de sa vie.

Tout au long du XIXe siècle, la production d’œuvres originales ou transcrites pour duo à quatre mains a augmenté de façon exponentielle. La société bourgeoise souhaitait jouer ce type de répertoire et le monde de l’édition l’exigeait des compositeurs.

Contrairement à Czerny, Dussek, Hummel, Kuhlau, Moscheles ou Schubert, Beethoven semble n’avoir eu que peu d’intérêt pour ce format et n’a composé pour piano à quatre mains qu’à cinq reprises. Il s’agit de quatre œuvres originales : deux cycles de variations, une sonate et un triptyque de marches ; et une transcription officielle de la Grosse Fuge.

On ne sait pas exactement si les Huit Variations sur

un thème du comte Waldstein, WoO 67 ont été composées à Bonn en 1791 ou si elles coïncident déjà avec son arrivée à Vienne en 1792. En tout cas, il semble certain que le thème utilisé est un original du comte Ferdinand Ernst Gabriel von Waldstein – ami et bienfaiteur de Beethoven – bien que retravaillé par le compositeur. En 1791, Beethoven avait déjà composé une œuvre pour le comte Waldstein, le Ritterballet, WoO 1, bien que ce ne soit qu’en 1804, en lui dédiant sa Sonate pour piano, op. 53, qu’il consacrera la mémoire du comte à la postérité. Le thème utilisé est simple et possède une certaine élégance, même si la subdivision quaternaire indiquée dans la partition, au lieu d’une subdivision binaire qui serait probablement plus conforme au phrasé, est surprenante. En revanche, l’incipit a une certaine affinité avec le thème « Les Hommes Pieusement » de l’opéra-comique Les pèlerins de la Mecque ou La rencontre imprévue de C.W. Gluck. Il est intéressant de noter que, dans les deux dernières variations, Beethoven utilise une structure plus libre et rhapsodique alternant drame, frénésie et longs moments cadentiels, similaire à celle des variations de Mozart, K. ​​455, utilisant le thème « gluckien » mentionné ci-dessus.

On sait très peu de choses sur la Sonate en ré majeur, op. 6 (1796/97). Par sa tonalité et son caractère, elle rappelle la Sonate de Mozart, K. 381 (1772), bien que le thème principal du premier mouvement semble être l’ancêtre du célèbre incipit de la Cinquième Symphonie de Beethoven. Sa structure « bifronte » (en deux parties) est inhabituelle, bien qu’à la même époque Beethoven ait également composé deux sonates pour violoncelle et piano (op. 5) partageant le même format. Beethoven composera à nouveau des sonates en deux mouvements à d’autres occasions (Sonate pour violoncelle op. 102, nº 1;

Sonates pour piano op. 49, nº 1 et nº 2; op. 54, op. 78, op. 90 et op. 111). La Sonate op. 6 pourrait être comprise comme un petit cadeau pour un élève ou simplement comme une sonatine didactique, comme dans le cas des sonates de l’op. 49.

Présence de l’Aimée Je pense à toi quand le soleil brille de la mer ; Je pense à toi quand la douce lumière de la lune se reflète dans les eaux.

Cet enregistrement comporte, pour la première fois, la transcription pour piano à quatre mains du Quintette en mi bémol majeur pour piano et vents, op. 16 (1796). Beethoven n’a jamais aimé cette œuvre (Charles Rosen l’appelait « classicisante » plutôt que « classique »), mais sa popularité l’a amenée à être transcrite pour diverses combinaisons. Aujourd’hui, seule la transcription pour piano et trio à cordes de 1801 (op. 16b) est officiellement considérée comme étant du compositeur. Il était très courant que Beethoven autorise les éditeurs à arranger ses œuvres en son nom. Bien que la paternité de l’arrangement pour piano à quatre mains ne soit pas explicitement connue, l’ami et éditeur de Beethoven, Nicolaus Simrock, l’a publié en 1824 comme l’original du compositeur.

Elles ont été incluses dans l’album de musique de Thérèse et Joséphine Brunsvik pendant le séjour des deux comtesses à Vienne en mai 1799. De ce moment jusqu’à sa mort, Beethoven a maintenu une relation étroite avec toute la famille. Entre juillet et août 1803, avant de les publier, Beethoven décida de prolonger le cycle en ajoutant deux autres variations.

Les Six variations sur ‘Ich denke dein’, WoO 74 (1799/1803) étaient à l’origine conçues comme un cycle de quatre variations (Thème et Variation I, II, V et VI), en accord avec les strophes du poème de Goethe (Nähe des Geliebten, 1795) auquel le thème fait référence. La première strophe est incluse dans le thème comme s’il s’agissait d’un vrai Lied : Nähe des Geliebten Ich denke dein, wenn mir der Sonne Schimmer Vom Meere strahlt; Ich denke dein, wenn sich des Mondes Flimmer In Quellen malt.

Dans la production musicale de divers compositeurs de l’Empire autrichien, il est facile de trouver d’innombrables marches, très souvent dépouillées de leur valeur militaire et conçues comme de petites œuvres d’art, comme dans le cas des marches de Schubert. De même, dans toute la production de Beethoven, il est possible de trouver des cas isolés tels que la célèbre « Marche turque » de la musique incidente des Ruines d’Athènes, op. 113 (1811), ou la « Marche funèbre » de la Symphonie n° 3, ‘Eroica’, et la « Marche funèbre à la mort d’un héros » de la Sonate pour piano, op. 26.

Les Trois Marches pour piano à quatre mains, op. 45 ont été offertes à la maison d’édition Breitkopf und Härtel en 1803, dédiées à la princesse Maria Esterhàzy, et se caractérisent par un style clair all’ungheres, qui peut être déduit par les changements soudains entre les modes majeur et mineur, par les modulations inhabituelles (Si bémol à Ré bémol dans la deuxième marche) et par l’esprit d’improvisation des sections intérieures. Elles représentent un Beethoven inhabituel, très « alla moda », mais au

sein d’une texture orchestrale sophistiquée. Parlant de ce triptyque et d’autres nouvelles compositions, Beethoven a écrit dans une lettre à son éditeur : « Tout ce que je vous envoie est complètement nouveau. Il est triste que nombre de mes œuvres anciennes et plus embarrassantes soient vendues ou volées ».

Beethoven était sans aucun doute l’un des compositeurs les plus chimériques et, à bien des égards, l’un des compositeurs les plus modernes de l’histoire de la musique. Sa manière de créer a toujours été méticuleuse et est le résultat d’un processus constructif ; un enfant des Lumières.

Il est extraordinaire que la Grosse Fuge, op. 134 (1826), l’une des compositions les plus difficiles à comprendre aussi bien pour les interprètes que pour le public, finisse par être destinée à l’ensemble en apparence le moins introspectif : le duo à quatre mains. Cette composition a été conçue à l’origine comme le dernier mouvement du Quatuor op. 130, mais en raison de son langage harmonique audacieux et de sa structure inhabituelle, elle a été retirée du quatuor. La fugue est ainsi devenue une œuvre autonome. La version à quatre mains a été produite à la demande de l’éditeur Mathias Artaria et a été interprétée par le compositeur lui-même, qui n’a pas accepté d’autres transcripteurs pour la jouer.

Selon le chercheur Warren Kirkendale (dans The ‘Great Fugue’, Op. 133: Beethoven’s Art of Fugue,

1963), la structure complexe de cette fugue peut être résumée comme suit : 1. Ouverture : introduit les principaux formats du premier thème (x), en les exposant dans l’ordre inverse de leur apparition dans la fugue (x4, x3, x2, x1); 2. Section A (Allegro) : double fugue sur x1 et deuxième thème pointé (y); 3. Section B (Meno mosso moderato) : double fugato sur x2 et nouveau contre-sujet (z), encadré et interrompu par les entrées homophoniques du thème z; 4. Section C : épisode de marche / scherzo sur x3 (diminution de x2), vaguement fugato; 5. Section D : fugue sur x4 (augmentation de x2), suivie d’une fantaisie libre; 6. Section B’ : répétition de B suivie d’une transition; 7. Section C’ : répétition de C; 8. Coda : section homophonique libre suivie d’une coda comprenant des réminiscences de tout le matériel précédent.

La Grosse Fuge est un exemple clair du polymorphisme stylistique qui caractérise Beethoven dans ses dernières années. C’est une grande fresque baroque destinée aux générations futures qui, comme le confirme lui-même le compositeur, ne se limite pas à l’exécution d’une fugue, mais vise à introduire de nouvelles poétiques dans les formes musicales traditionnelles.

Artur Pizarro et Rinaldo Zhok se sont rencontrés du fait que les deux pianistes ont enregistré pour Odradek. Ayant décidé de former un duo, ils se sont lancés dans une série de récitals et de concerts, interprétant des œuvres de Mozart et Czerny avec l’Orchestre de Chambre Portugais, l’Orchestre de Chambre de Cascais & Oeiras et l’Orchestre Classique de Madère. Leurs récitals en duo ont été fréquemment enregistrés et diffusés par la radio classique portugaise Antena 2. Le répertoire vaste et varié du duo comprend des œuvres de Mozart, Beethoven, Clementi, Czerny, Dvořák, Rachmaninov, Gershwin, Bernstein, Granados, Albéniz et De Falla.
