By prior arrangement, we can deliver your products to a specific ward or department, remove all the packaging (to be disposed of in an environmentally friendly manner) and ensure all products are exactly how the customer requires them. In addition, we can assist in the setup of products and aid with training on our specialist chairs and trolleys for optimum product performance.

Study Partners staying overnight project – Nottingham University Hospitals

Location

The brief

The driver for this project started back in 2018, when NUH received results from the annual CQC Picker Survey that indicated they could do more to support women who were staying in maternity overnight. NUH decided to introduce ‘partners staying overnight’ and began a pilot project. The trust conducted pre and post implementation surveys as part of the project with service users and staff and did a lot of work with health and safety, governance, safeguarding, infection control, patient dignity champions and trade unions. The project was designed to make it easier for fathers and nonbirthing parents to be involved in the pregnancy and birth journey while in hospital.

The approach

As part of the project, NUH made a bid to the Nottingham Hospitals Charity to purchase five chairs for each of the four antenatal and postnatal wards, in total 20 chairs across both hospital site campuses. NUH then made the decision they would like to extend the pilot to every inpatient bed in maternity. This was to allow the hospital to welcome partners or a trusted companion to stay with any woman or birthing person who had to stay in hospital overnight. To do this, NUH submitted a funding proposal to Small Steps Big Changes (SSBC), who fund projects that are designed to give every child the best start in life. They are funded by the National Lottery’s Community Fund’s ‘A Better Start’ Programme.

One of SSBC’s objectives is to increase father inclusivity in the lives of their children. They had developed ‘an information pack for new fathers’ in collaboration with local Nottingham families and other professionals and stakeholders. The project team trialled three different models of chairs with staff and dads in different locations within the maternity unit. The Boston was a clear winner due to the comfort levels, simplicity of use, and more generous size that was comfortable for taller men.

The outcome

NUH and SSBC worked together to launch the two initiatives. Feedback from the project has been overwhelmingly positive from partners, and just as welcome from staff, who also see the benefit for both women and partners. The recliners work well for women who want to sit out of bed and feed their babies too.

One new dad described the Boston recliner as a ‘godsend’, another had a 6 -night stay on the ward and said, “The Boston is very comfy to sit in for long periods with my newborn, its the next best alternative to sleeping in a bed.” One dad whose partner and baby had been transferred to Nottingham for admission to the neonatal unit said that he was so glad to have somewhere comfortable to rest as a 5 hour’s drive home every night would not have been safe.

Staff report they love the colours and the new recliners are easy to clean and can be moved without creating any manual handling injury.

The brief

Freeman Hospital approached Ocura looking for new recliners for their chemotherapy day unit. The previous chairs at the unit were not fit for purpose, they were too low and did not recline easily, making it difficult for staff to assist patients who weren’t independent or who suddenly became unwell whilst in the chair. Ashleigh Hughes, Senior Sister told us shrinking floor space is an issue in the day unit, therefore the chairs needed to not only be comfortable for patients and easy for nurses to move and assist patients in line with moving and handling guidelines, the new recliners needed to be space efficient.

The approach

During the process of finding the perfect recliner, other suppliers and recliners were considered but didn’t meet the exact needs of the unit.

Our Toronto was the perfect fit due to the built in table option, allowing the unit to reduce additional furniture for space and ease of cleaning. Additionally the built in USB ports were a vital feature for patients who spend a lot of time on their devices whilst undergoing treatment. Lastly, fast access to the Trendelenburg position meant staff could quickly assist patients experiencing vasovagal episodes.

The outcome

Staff report the recliners are easy and efficient to manoeuvre, staff particularly like the fact they can move the chair to a nearby area with a patient seated if they become unwell, giving the patient privacy to recover. Patients report they feel comfortable seated in the recliners for long periods of time.

Case Study Breast Care Centre – Ipswich Hospital

The brief

The reprovision of breast services from across the hospital was to be moved to one dedicated facility bringing together clinics, treatment, diagnostics and imaging, administrative support, and consultation under one roof for all breast services. The project objective is to improve patient pathways and experience, another key driver was to increase staff efficiencies, the reprovision meant all new furniture was required for the centre.

The approach

East Suffolk and North Essex NHS Foundation Trust, the Trust which runs Ipswich and Colchester hospitals have previously worked with us on different projects. The Capital Projects team identified our products due to a few factors; the new furniture needed to aid infection control, and so the Arvada® was chosen due to its metal legs and removable seat cushion for ease of cleaning. Patient comfort was paramount, the low armrests on

Arvada® helped avoid sensitive areas. And lastly, the flexibility of design, standard, height-adjustable, and bariatric chairs are all available under the same aesthetic.

The outcome

The colours are inviting and less ‘clinical’ than grey and white. Patients and visitors have commented on how comfy and secure the chairs are; if an extended wait is required for results Arvada® offers high comfort levels to patients seated for longer periods of time.

The flexibility of the seating in all areas is subtle but meets varying patient needs to ensure the unit is meeting EDI standards to the highest level. Infection control was happy to sign off Arvada® due to its clean lines and ease of cleaning. The chairs are sturdy meaning they are better for less ambulant patients as they don’t move or slip around on the floor.

The colours have been noted frequently by staff and visitors – offering a softer, less clinical feel.

Orpington Hospital –staff well-being hub

Location

Orpington Hospital

The brief

Orpington Hospital identified the need to improve the staff facilities at the Hospital, to provide a well-being hub for hard-working staff to relax and take their breaks in. A courtyard within the Hospital provided the perfect space for an outdoor break area. The trust knew providing a place to rest would enhance staff well-being and help with retention and recruitment.

The approach

Ocura worked closely with Claire and her colleagues at Orpington Hospital, to design an area that would provide a high level of comfort and convenience for staff, whilst complementing the modern design of the new facility. Space planning and design concepts helped Claire and her team decide on the preferred styles of furniture. Earthy colours were selected to create a woodland theme for the well-being hub.

The outcome

The new purpose-built facility in the hospital courtyard is a bright and airy space for staff to take a restful break, and have a snack or beverage. The Trust selected Koko sofas and custom-made stools for the interior area, and Aurora chairs and tables for the exterior area.

MP Gareth Bacon who opened the facility says it “looks fantastic”. Professor Clive Kay, Chief Executive of King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, which runs Orpington Hospital, said, “We know how important facilities like this are, and I am very pleased that we have been able to create such a fantastic space. I hope staff will enjoy this facility for many years to come”.

The hospital charity, Friends of Orpington Hospital gave a generous donation towards the project, funding the furniture for both the interior and exterior.

The brief Adnova partner Charles Durrant wanted treatment chairs that were ergonomically designed, supportive for staff and patients and equipped with the latest technology to suit the look and feel of the new cosmetic surgical practice. They needed to be able to transport patients from the assessment area through to theatre and recovery cubicles. Effective and efficient repositioning of the patient was a major requirement to support staff in a wide range of procedures and cosmetic surgeries.

The approach

The client knew exactly what they wanted our AC+ due to the flexibility of applications and how the chairs can be repositioned during surgery. The surgi-rails accessory needed to be UK Standard so that the client could continue to use the existing clamps to hold equipment. This was a special requirement and was achieved with ease.

The outcome

After using the chairs over the last 3 months Lynne Proctor told us they are really easy and smooth to move around the clinic. Patient flow is optimised as they’re going from being laid flat to sitting up and getting ready to leave the clinic in one chair, reducing recovery time. The handset is simple to use and patients love the ‘relax position’. She also mentioned that the emergency foot bar for quick access to the Trendelenburg position assists in keeping hands free to deal with any emergency that may transpire. Adnova has since safeguarded their investment by purchasing our maintenance contract, a cost-effective way to reduce downtime and enhance the lifetime of their chairs.

Verona Therapy Chair

Verona Therapy Chair – Key Features

Verona provides maximum clinical flexibility and the highest level of comfort in areas such as chemotherapy and dialysis. The Verona has a range of movement and the ability to go from a fully upright position to a fully reclined Trendelenburg position, allowing hospitals to use it for initial consultations and treatment. Equipped with up to five electric adjustable motors, the Verona is simplistic in its usability for both patients and clinicians with a picturised handset, to guide users into the desired position.

The brief

The British Airways Health Services (BAHS) Team provides an immunisation service along with specialist confidential support and advice for aircrew. Pilots and crew may seek advice about health issues, or they can arrange an appointment with an Occupational Health Physician and AME. The Team was looking to upgrade their current chairs for their health centre beside London Heathrow Airport. Kendall, the Occupational Health Practice Nurse, saw Ocura’s Deneo Chairs in action at the Phlebotomy Department at Hemel Hempstead Hospital, and liked the compact, modern design.

The approach

The new chairs needed to be robust, reliable, and compact, but with a futuristic feel to fit the health centre’s design. We provided a Deneo for the staff to trial to ensure the chair met all their needs. Anita, BA Health Centre Practice Manager told us “everybody had a go [using the chairs] and we had good feedback”. The modern design is better for our customers. It looks professional and fits the very high standard offered here”.

The outcome

British Airways Health Services proceeded with a purchase order for the Deneo Chairs, as well as Orkney Operator Stools for the clinicians. They also purchased an Ocura Care service package as a way of protecting their investment. Our service contracts are a cost-effective way to reduce downtime and enhance the lifetime of your product. They provide a basic Planned Preventative Maintenance strategy, essential for identifying any potential problems whilst helping to keep staff and patients safe when using the furniture.

Once the chairs were manufactured, we arranged delivery, and Robin, Ocura Account Manager provided a training session for staff. Feedback received was “Robin you’re a hit, the nurses felt you were very clear and concise, very good and informative” and “the chair is very straightforward and simple to use”.

Cleaning:

We recommend cleaning at least once a week to extend the lifespan of the upholstery, preventing dirt and contamination from building up and stains from becoming permanent. Clean the whole surface in circular motions using liquid hand soap and water (1 part soap to 9 parts water), or check the guide for recommended cleaning products. Rinse and wipe with a clean damp white cloth to get rid of any excess soap. Repeat as needed and then let dry. Once a month, you can use a softbristle brush for a deeper cleaning. Remember, light colours need more care, more often.

General Cleaning Instructions

Ocura proudly supplies high-quality products, designed to be used in demanding environments. With the correct care and attention, your furniture will provide many years of useful life. The following information is issued as a guide to help maintain our furniture to high standards of cleanliness and thereby prevent the spread of infection. All surfaces should be diligently cleaned, disinfected regularly, and kept dry to minimize the risk of cross-contamination and damage.

Cleaning and subsequent disinfection must be carried out at regular intervals

The following times are usually observed.

• If required.

• Af ter each patient change.

• In accordance with the guidelines of the operator’s hygiene plan.

The product must always be disconnected from the mains supply by unplugging the mains plug before commencing cleaning work.

All General Surfaces

• Clean all surfaces with a soft, damp cloth and polish completely dry. Abrasive cloth must not be used.

• Any stains, spills or soiling should be cleaned up immediately to prevent the possibility of permanent staining.

• For disinfection, use diluted chlorine products at a strength of 1,000ppm chlorine and 10,000ppm for blood/blood-stained body fluid spillages.

• All surfaces must be kept dry at all times. Exposure to wet or humid conditions could result in rust marks, paint lifting, discolouration, and/or corrosion.

• Do not use concentrated bleach, synthetic detergents, solvents, wax polishes, or aerosol sprays on any surface.

• Using cleaning products contrary to the recommended instructions may compromise the integrity of the furniture and invalidate your warranty.

Electrical Components

• Electrical components must not be exposed to any form of liquid or humid conditions.

• Plastic casings containing actuators or handsets should be cleaned using a soft damp non-abrasive cloth and polished dry immediately.

• Do not use solvents, abrasives, synthetic detergents, wax polishes, or aerosol sprays on any electrical components.

Trolleys and Overbed Tables

• Clean all surfaces with a soft, damp cloth and polish completely dry.

• Under no circumstances should scouring sponges or cleaning agents containing abrasive particles, abrasives or other blunting substances be used.

• All surfaces must be kept dry at all times. Exposure to wet or humid conditions could result in rust marks, paint lifting, discolouration, and/or corrosion.

• Keep trolleys and tables away from direct sunlight.

Vinyl Upholstery

Our vinyl ranges offer excellent stain resistance and cleanability and have been tested for compatibility with the Department of Health and Social Care’s recommended cleaning regimes. Our vinyl is compatible with most NHS-approved cleaning solutions and wipes, including ChlorClean, Haz-tab, Actichlor-Plus, Milton, Clinell and Tristel.

Vinyl upholstery must be cleaned daily in order to maintain its appearance and to prevent any build-up of dirt and contaminants.

1. Wipe clean with a soft cloth (microfibre or similar), lightly dampened with a cleaning agent, if required, and cold water only. Do not use soap or cleaning solutions that contain alcohol, acetates, or solvents (mineral/white spirits).

2. Completely remove excess cleaner with a white, clean, damp cloth.

3. Completely dry the surface with a soft cloth (microfibre or similar). Ensure the vinyl is completely dry before putting the product back into use.

Remove bodily fluid, heavy stains and extreme soiling with cold water immediately.

Any stains, spills, or soiling should be cleaned up promptly to prevent the possibility of permanent staining. Lacquers, strong cleaners, detergents, xylene-based solutions, and acetone may cause immediate damage and contribute to the deterioration of the material. The use of such cleaners is at the end user’s risk.

• Do not use organic solvents (e.g. petrol, benzene, turpentine, toluene, xylene or acetone, chlorides, aerosol sprays, chemical cleaning agents, or wax polishes to clean the vinyl).

• Oil, sweat and blood must be removed immediately. If disinfection is required, use diluted chlorine products at a strength of 1,000 ppm chlorine and 10,000ppm for blood/ blood-stained body fluid spillages. Do not use excessive amounts of water to clean the vinyl.

• Care should be taken to protect the vinyl from oil-based products (including body oils) as continued use will cause the vinyl to harden.

• Dyes and pigments from, iodine, ballpoint pen, lipstick, newsprint, food colourings and clothing, e.g. jeans may be absorbed by the vinyl and cause permanent staining.

• Exposure to wet or humid conditions could result in rust marks, paint lifting, discolouration, or corrosion.

Cleaning results may vary, depending on the size of the stain, the cleaning product used and the time the surface is exposed. The use of unsuitable cleaning agents, disinfectants, the incorrect mixing ratio, and insufficient care of the vinyl can cause damage to the surface coating for which Ocura Healthcare is not liable.
