Case study | Cardiff and Vale Trauma and Orthopaedics Service
Prior to the establishment of the Trauma Ambulatory Care Unit (TACU), ambulatory trauma patients were treated through the Emergency Department stream. The existing pathways for non-complicated trauma patients treated in the hospital was based on a historical standard of care, relying on the availability of beds to provide treatment but the beds were often filled with non-ambulant or systemically unwell patients.
The unsuitable environment of no access to a bed, natural light, or refreshments meant the overall patient experience was poor.
Feedback was that the area was uncomfortable and detracted from their clinical care. Patients often self-discharged against medical advice directly citing the poor facilities. This in turn compromised their care leading to worse outcomes.
The approach
As patient concerns became apparent, the need for an alternative was clear: A facility that could host in-patients, administer care, without the need for an in-patient bed, allow senior medical review, and escalate care to the operating theatre as needed.
To solve this problem the health board introduced the Trauma Ambulatory Care Unit (TACU).
This reproduced best practice examples from ambulatory care by streamlining appropriate patients into an ambulatory care pathway, alongside a behavioural mindset change of clinicians to be more “why can’t this be day case?” versus “can this be day case?” This mindset change prompted a fundamental new approach.
The health board and Ocura worked together to select 8 new recliners. Mauro, a compact recliner was selected, allowing patients to have their consultation, treatment, and recovery in one chair. For minor surgery, Verona was selected enabling maximum clinical flexibility.
The outcome
Simple minor procedures can be performed within the unit itself and when necessary, patients are prepped for theatre and can recover in TACU post-operatively before discharge the same day.
Patients requiring intravenous antibiotics over many days are now attending day visits, the patient can be kept on the antibiotics for the full term without using bed space, resulting in better care for patients.
Patient feedback is universally positive, 82% of patients rated the new facility as “excellent” on a 5-point scale and stated they enjoy the flexibility that the unit offers.
Based on a total dataset of 76,265 cases from February 2013 to 15th January 2023, the following was measured pre and post implementation of the Trauma Ambulatory Care Unit (TACU).
For open reduction and fixation surgery:
• Pre-TACU average length of stay was 87 hours.
• Post-TACU average length of stay is 12 hours.
• A patient’s stay is now 86% shorter.
Continuous IV Abx:
• Pre-TACU average length of stay was 60 hours.
• Post-TACU average length of stay is 47 hours.
• Resulting in a 22% shorter length of stay.
A key outcome is that by freeing up these beds, there are more beds available for patients coming in through the Emergency Department, who do need to be admitted. Now only 7% of patients end up requiring a hospital bed overnight.
The unit runs with minimal staff: 1 qualified and 1 non-qualified nurse covering the 8 chair spaces. Recruitment was easy, the staff like the predictable hours and place of work and the unit takes up a small geographical space.
TACU saved 2000 bed days, the equivalent of 66 bed days per month.
The estimated cost per bed per day is £500, providing the health board a saving of £1,000,000 over the 2.5-year period.
Enhancing transplant patient comfort and recovery at Addenbrookes Hospital Case study | Addenbrookes
Overview
In a transformative effort to enhance patient care, Addenbrooke’s Liver Transplant Association (ALTA) leveraged a generous donation from a former patient to address the pressing need for better patient chairs in the G5 Transplant Ward at Addenbrooke’s Hospital. The existing upright wooden chairs failed to provide the comfort or functionality required to meet patient needs, often leading to discomfort and reduced motivation to leave their beds both critical factors in recovery.
To address these concerns, ALTA and Addenbrookes Hospital partnered with Ocura Healthcare Furniture to find a solution that would not only improve patient comfort but also promote better recovery times.
Customer goals
The collaborative effort was driven by clear objectives:
• Replace outdated wooden chairs with modern, patient-centric alternatives.
• Enhance patient comfort to encourage out-ofbed activity.
• Foster better recovery outcomes through improved seating solutions.
• Ensure chairs are mobile, easy to clean, and compliant with Infection Prevention and Control (IP&C) standards.
Our approach
We adopted a collaborative and tailored approach to ensure the chosen solutions addressed all requirements:
Collaborative engagement: We worked closely with ALTA and Addenbrooke’s Hospital staff to understand patient feedback, ward conditions, and clinical needs.
Product demonstrations: We organised an on-site demo at Addenbrooke’s Hospital, involving ALTA representatives and ward staff. This provided a hands-on experience with various product options, allowing stakeholders to evaluate features, comfort, and usability directly.
Customisation recommendations: Suggested specific product add-ons and features to better align with patient requirements and clinical standards.
Outcomes
The partnership yielded significant positive outcomes for both patients and staff:
Enhanced patient comfort: The new chairs provided superior ergonomic support, with adjustable seating positions allowing for individual comfort.
Improved recovery rates: Motivated by the comfort and functionality of the new chairs, patients are more likely to leave their beds and engage in recoverypromoting activities.
Infection control compliance: All chairs met rigorous Infection Prevention & Control (IP&C) standards, ensuring a safe environment for patients.
Increased mobility: The chairs are easy to manœuvre, thanks to their housekeeping castors, simplifying cleaning and repositioning processes for staff.
Conclusion
Ocura’s partnership with ALTA and Addenbrooke’s Hospital highlights the transformative impact of patient-centric furniture in healthcare settings.
By replacing outdated chairs with the Mauro Relax Chair and Denver Reclining Armchair, the G5 Transplant Ward now offers a more comfortable and supportive environment that encourages faster recovery.

Creating a sanctuary for staff wellbeing at Imperial College
Healthcare NHS Trust
The brief Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust’s project was to refurbish their existing training centre and introduce a new library to replace a recently closed facility.
The project focused on redesigning the layout to optimise space for training sessions and providing dedicated breakout spaces in the form of staff and student lounges, with a key objective of supporting users’ mental health.
FAP Architects were lead consultant for the redevelopment, collaborating with trusted suppliers, including Ocura Healthcare Furniture, to successfully bring the vision to life.
The approach
With a charity funding boost during the project, FAP Architects were asked to work with the end users to further develop the interior strategy, with new furniture throughout the facility.
Following research on how areas would be used, the scheme developed with an earthy colour palette which makes use of textured vinyl and wood finishes. The look and feel were essential to fostering a calm yet inspirational working environment for staff and students.
FAP led the project’s space utilisation and colour scheme, collaborating closely with key stakeholders from the Trust and experts at Ocura.
Longevity and durability were priorities, ensuring that the furniture selected would stand the test of time. The design also ensured uniformity across all three departments housed in the facility, providing a cohesive and connected training experience.
The
outcome
The completion of the project has resulted in a space that is tailored to staff’s needs. Especially when it comes to relaxing and training in an environment outside of the usual clinical feel of a healthcare environment. The use of Ocura’s Opti-Lite range has allowed for bespoke colourways, promoting a ‘home away from home’ feel.
The space’s look and feel advocates investment in its staff wellbeing, ultimately leading to staff retention.

Enhancing Patient Comfort and Space Efficiency at St Bartholomew’s Hospital’s Cancer Acute Assessment Unit
The brief
Ocura Healthcare Furniture was part of a capital project to develop a new Cancer Acute Assessment Unit (CAU) on the 7th floor of the King George V Building at St Bartholomew’s Hospital (SBH).
This project has increased total capacity and flexibility of space across 5th and 7th floor cancer areas. To enable this, staff and services previously located in the administrative offices on the 5th floor have moved to the SMLG offices to create capacity for expanded clinical space.
The approach
Further to supplying the successful Verona Chairs to the Chemotherapy Day Unit, we were involved along with the Architect and also the Projects Team in connection with space planning the new areas from the plans and proposing various priced options.
Various meetings were had on site to discuss specifications with management, clinical staff and visual arts to ensure a well designed and appealing healing environment. Information including light reflective values (LRV) was provided to ensure suitable colour differentiation of the furniture vs the flooring and wall finishes to ensure best user experience. Details were provided as to VAT exemption to ensure best possible value for the tight capital budget.
The outcome
Verona chairs were purchased for the 7th floor with emergency foot control pedals to ensure fast emergency recline. Boston Recliners were opted for in the 5th Floor area due to confined space and to maximise the number of patients that could be treated.
The Baltimore Seating was purchased to match in with the same seating that was purchased previously for the main reception area on Floor 7.
The whole team at the Trust were extremely happy with the end result.

Enhancing Patient Care: Ocura’s Deneo Chairs Elevate British Airways Health Services
The brief
The British Airways Health Services (BAHS) Team provides an immunisation service along with specialist confidential support and advice for aircrew. Pilots and crew may seek advice about health issues, or they can arrange an appointment with an Occupational Health Physician and AME.
The Team was looking to upgrade their current chairs for their health centre beside London Heathrow Airport. Kendall, the Occupational Health Practice Nurse, saw Ocura’s Deneo Chairs in action at the Phlebotomy Department at Hemel Hempstead Hospital, and liked the compact, modern design.
The approach
The new chairs needed to be robust, reliable, and compact, but with a futuristic feel to fit the health centre’s design. We provided a Deneo for the staff to trial to ensure the chair met all their needs. Anita, BA Health Centre Practice Manager told us “everybody had a go [using the chairs] and we had good feedback”. The modern design is better for our customers. It looks professional and fits the very high standard offered here”.
The outcome
British Airways Health Services proceeded with a purchase order for the Deneo Chairs, as well as Orkney Operator Stools for the clinicians. They also purchased an Ocura Care service package as a way of protecting their investment.
Our service contracts are a cost-effective way to reduce downtime and enhance the lifetime of your product. They provide a basic Planned Preventative Maintenance strategy, essential for identifying any potential problems whilst helping to keep staff and patients safe when using the furniture.
Once the chairs were manufactured, we arranged delivery, and Robin, Ocura Account Manager provided a training session for staff. Feedback received was “Robin you’re a hit, the nurses felt you were very clear and concise, very good and informative” and “the chair is very straightforward and simple to use”.

Maximising space and accessibility at Moorfields Eye Clinic, Croydon Hospital
The brief
Following a brief from staff at Moorfields Eye Clinic, Ocura was brought in to revamp their utility room by maximising storage capacity and accessibility. The department wanted to replace their existing shelving units with more robust racking systems to better organise supplies and equipment. However, this wasn’t your average storage upgrade, the room contained various fixed obstacles to navigate around.
The approach
The process began when Helga at Moorfields Eye Clinic reached out to Ocura with an initial inquiry about upgrading their existing storage unit. Conveniently, Jennie from our team was already on-site and was able to visit the space the same day. She took detailed measurements and assessed the room layout, identifying key areas for improvement and noting the importance of providing optimal storage for fast-turnover consumables.
With these insights, the Ocura team set to work on designing a solution that would maximise the space and functionality of the storage unit. Our focus was on developing a shelving system that would not only make the best use of the available area but also cater specifically to the clinic’s need for quick access to essential supplies.
The outcome
Our Clini-Store™ solution replaced the clinic’s industrial racking with medical-grade shelving specifically designed for healthcare environments.
This includes an extra shelf dedicated to fast-turnover consumables, with additional shelving carefully placed on each side of the window. A customised solution was also developed for the cleaner’s area, incorporating shelving that leaves clearance for the sink and lockable safe while ensuring maximum stability.
One of the key improvements was creating enough dedicated space for spare wheelchair storage without compromising valuable racking capacity. Additionally, adjustable shelf heights have allowed for far more efficient use of vertical space, making it possible to store significantly more equipment than the previous shelving could accommodate.

Cleaning:

Remove product residues and then dry with a clean, absorbent cloth.

General Cleaning Instructions
Ocura proudly supplies high-quality products, designed to be used in demanding environments. With the correct care and attention, your furniture will provide many years of useful life.
The following information is issued as a guide to help maintain our furniture to high standards of cleanliness and thereby prevent the spread of infection. All surfaces should be diligently cleaned, disinfected regularly, and kept dry to minimise the risk of cross-contamination and damage.
Cleaning and subsequent disinfection must be carried out at regular intervals.
The following times are usually observed.
• If required.
• After each patient change.
• In accordance with the guidelines of the operator’s hygiene plan.
The product must always be disconnected from the mains supply by unplugging the mains plug before commencing cleaning work.
Electrical Components
• Electrical components must not be exposed to any form of liquid or humid conditions.
• Plastic casings containing actuators or handsets should be cleaned using a soft damp non-abrasive cloth and polished dry immediately.
• Do not use solvents, abrasives, synthetic detergents, wax polishes, or aerosol sprays on any electrical components.
All General Surfaces
• Clean all surfaces with a soft, damp cloth and polish completely dry. Abrasive cloth must not be used.
• Any stains, spills or soiling should be cleaned up immediately to prevent the possibility of permanent staining.
• For disinfection, use diluted chlorine products at a strength of 1,000ppm chlorine and 10,000ppm for blood/blood-stained body fluid spillages.
• All surfaces must be kept dry at all times. Exposure to wet or humid conditions could result in rust marks, paint lifting, discolouration, and/or corrosion.
• Do not use concentrated bleach, synthetic detergents, solvents, wax polishes, or aerosol sprays on any surface.
• Using cleaning products contrary to the recommended instructions may compromise the integrity of the furniture and invalidate your warranty.
Trolleys and Overbed Tables
• Clean all surfaces with a soft, damp cloth and polish completely dry.
• Under no circumstances should scouring sponges or cleaning agents containing abrasive particles, abrasives or other blunting substances be used.
• All surfaces must be kept dry at all times. Exposure to wet or humid conditions could result in rust marks, paint lifting, discolouration, and/or corrosion.
• Keep trolleys and tables away from direct sunlight.
• Exposure to wet or humid conditions could result in rust marks, paint lifting, discolouration, or corrosion.
Vinyl Upholstery
Our vinyl ranges offer excellent stain resistance and cleanability and have been tested for compatibility with the Department of Health and Social Care’s recommended cleaning regimes. Our vinyl is compatible with most NHS-approved cleaning solutions and wipes, including Chlor-Clean, Haz-tab, Actichlor-Plus, Milton, Clinell and Tristel.
Vinyl upholstery must be cleaned daily in order to maintain its appearance and to prevent any build-up of dirt and contaminants.
1. Wipe clean with a soft cloth (microfibre or similar), lightly dampened with a cleaning agent, if required, and cold water only. Do not use soap or cleaning solutions that contain alcohol, acetates, or solvents (mineral/white spirits).
2. Completely remove excess cleaner with a white, clean, damp cloth.
3. Completely dry the surface with a soft cloth (microfibre or similar). Ensure the vinyl is completely dry before putting the product back into use.
Remove bodily fluid, heavy stains and extreme soiling with cold water immediately.
Any stains, spills, or soiling should be cleaned up promptly to prevent the possibility of permanent staining. Lacquers, strong cleaners, detergents, xylene-based solutions, and acetone may cause immediate damage and contribute to the deterioration of the material. The use of such cleaners is at the end user’s risk.
• Do not use organic solvents (e.g. petrol, benzene, turpentine, toluene, xylene or acetone, chlorides, aerosol sprays, chemical cleaning agents, or wax polishes to clean the vinyl).
• Oil, sweat and blood must be removed immediately. If disinfection is required, use diluted chlorine products at a strength of 1,000 ppm chlorine and 10,000ppm for blood/blood-stained body fluid spillages. Do not use excessive amounts of water to clean the vinyl.
• Care should be taken to protect the vinyl from oil-based products (including body oils) as continued use will cause the vinyl to harden.
• Dyes and pigments from, iodine, ballpoint pen, lipstick, newsprint, food colourings and clothing, e.g. jeans may be absorbed by the vinyl and cause permanent staining.
• Exposure to wet or humid conditions could result in rust marks, paint lifting, discolouration, or corrosion.
Cleaning results may vary, depending on the size of the stain, the cleaning product used and the time the surface is exposed. The use of unsuitable cleaning agents, disinfectants, the incorrect mixing ratio, and insufficient care of the vinyl can cause damage to the surface coating for which Ocura Healthcare is not liable.
