Mauro has improved the lives of parents and infants in maternity units, the goal of Mauro is to make kangaroo care, expressing and bonding accessible and comfortable for all recovering mothers and newborns. The recliner can be locked in the recline in any position, meaning the mum or partner feels safe holding their baby securely in a way that is comfortable.

The zero-gravity recline position means mum or partner can maintain kangaroo care, cuddles and feeding for an extended period without tiring. The armrests are height adjustable, at their lowest height they are flush with the seat cushion, allowing easy side transfer supporting new mums who have experienced a difficult birth or a C-section.

Trauma Ambulatory Care Unit (TACU)

The new patient pathway saved TACU 66 bed days per month providing the trust with a saving of £1,000,000 over a 2.5 year period.

The brief

Prior to the establishment of the Trauma Ambulatory Care Unit (TACU) ambulatory trauma patients were treated through the Emergency Department stream. The existing pathways for non-complicated trauma patients treated in the hospital was based on a historical standard of care, relying on the availability of beds to provide treatment but the beds were often filled with non-ambulant or systemically unwell patients.

The unsuitable environment of no access to a bed, natural light, or refreshments meant the overall patient experience was poor. Feedback was that the area was uncomfortable and detracted from their clinical care. Patients often selfdischarged against medical advice directly citing the poor facilities. This in turn compromised their care leading to worse outcomes.

The approach

As patient concerns became apparent, the need for an alternative was clear: A facility that could host in-patients, administer care, without the need for an in-patient bed, allow senior medical review, and escalate care to the operating theatre as needed.

To solve this problem the trust introduced TACU and reproduced best practice examples from ambulatory care by streamlining appropriate patients into an ambulatory care pathway, alongside a behavioural mindset change of clinicians to be more “why can’t this be day case?” versus “can this be day case?”. This mindset change prompted a fundamental new approach. The trust and Ocura worked together to select 8 new recliners. Mauro, a compact recliner was selected, allowing patients to have their consultation, treatment, and recovery in one chair. For minor surgery, Verona (see page 158) was selected enabling maximum clinical flexibility.

The outcome

Simple minor procedures can be performed within the unit itself and when necessary, patients are prepped for theatre and can recover in TACU post-operatively before discharge the same day.

Patients requiring intravenous antibiotics over many days are now attending day visits, the patient can be kept on the antibiotics for the full term without using bed space, resulting in better care for patients.

Patient feedback is universally positive, 82% of patients rated the new facility as “excellent” on a 5-point scale and stated they enjoy the flexibility that the unit offers.

Better patient outcomes and satisfaction

For open reduction and fixation surgery:

Pre-TACU average LOS was 87 hours

Post-TACU average LOS is 12 hours

Continuous IV Abx:

Pre-TACU average LOS was 60 hours

Post-TACU average LOS is 47 hours

More Beds for those who need them

A key outcome is that by freeing up these beds, there are more beds available for patients coming in through the Emergency Department, who do need to be admitted. Now only 7% of patients end up requiring a hospital bed overnight.

Staff Wellbeing and Retention

The unit runs with minimal staff: 1 qualified and 1 nonqualified nurse covering the 8 chair spaces. Recruitment was easy, the staff like the predictable hours and place of work and the unit takes up a small geographical space.

Fiscal Savings

TACU saved 2000 bed days, the equivalent of 66 bed days per month.

The estimated cost per bed per day is £500, providing the trust a saving of £1,000,000 over the 2.5-year period.

The brief

The outpatients unit was looking to replace a worn-out range of seats to fit the feel of the newly decorated reception area. The unit wanted to use different colours to help patients know they are waiting in the correct areas.

The approach

Robin, Ocura account manager met with David Senior, service manager to discuss the requirements in more detail and finalise the exact requirements including adding arms at the end of the Vaila beam seating to make it easier for patients with mobility issues to get in and out of the chairs. 69 beam seats were installed on a specific day that best suited the clinic to ensure minimal disruption to service.

The outcome

The ordering and delivery process was seamless. The beam seating in several different colours has given us the opportunity to help patients know they are waiting in the correct areas. The colours have really brightened up the waiting areas and the new look has enhanced the department’s aesthetic and patient experience.

Case Study Leigh Early Pregnancy Unit –Modernisations

The brief

The driver for this project started back in 2022. The unit needed refurbishment and updating to improve the patient experience and staff morale. The goal was to create a comfortable and welcoming environment that would alleviate patient anxiety and promote a positive experience for patients and staff. To achieve this goal, the EPU manager, Nichola, decided to invest in new furniture solutions. They consulted with Ocura to ensure the new furniture would meet the needs of the unit and its patients.

The approach

The first step was to replace the outdated hospital beds with comfortable Boston recliners. The Boston recliners were chosen for their ability to provide a more relaxed and comfortable experience for patients during their stay. The chairs were designed to support patients in a semi-reclined position, allowing them to rest and recover more comfortably. The use of Boston also helped to create a more homely atmosphere, rather than a sterile hospital environment.

The next step was to replace the old examination couches with specialised Stockholm gynaecological procedure couches. Stockholm couches were designed to be more comfortable and supportive, reducing discomfort for patients during examinations. The new couches were also easier to clean and maintain, ensuring the highest standard of infection control in the unit.

The unit team also recognised the importance of providing soft, comfortable seating with Koko and Kilda in patient quiet areas to create a more peaceful and personal experience. Patients were able to sit and relax on both Koko and Kilda in a comfortable and soothing environment while waiting for appointments or test results. This not only improved the patient experience but also helped to reduce anxiety levels in patients, making their stay at the unit a better overall experience.

The outcome

The new furniture solutions not only improved the patient experience but also had a positive impact on staff morale. The staff were able to work in a more comfortable and welcoming environment, which improved their job satisfaction and motivation. The new furniture also helped to create a more efficient workflow as the staff were able to carry out their duties more effectively with the new equipment.

The brief

The trust built a new Day Surgery Unit with 14 cubicles; and needed 14 new recliner chairs for the unit. The day surgery unit was created to help reduce patient backlog by thousands each year and tackle problems associated with this. The aim is to increase surgical procedures by 2,000 per year as one of the 50 government investments.

The approach

The first step was facilitating a Verona trial with the end user. Ocura worked extensively with them regarding spec requirements to ensure Verona could meet all requirements and get as close as possible to their budget.

Account manager Ebony visited the site to go through queries and demonstrations of how to reach a flat position easily during an emergency, and how the footswitch worked for hands-free easy access to the Trendelenburg position. They particularly liked Ocura compared to other suppliers due to how easy we were to deal with.

The Verona was chosen over the Ferrara, initially based on appearance, but then because of the higher level of comfort Verona provides. The fully electric functionality met all safety standards and made it easy for staff to operate. The Verona is also more compact than the Modena/AC+ to fit in the smaller clinic rooms. The trust was able to choose a vinyl colour that matched the colour scheme set by the architects for the new unit.

The outcome

Staff and patients are pleased with the new chairs: patients report Verona provides a welcoming first impression and they felt comfortable during their procedure. Staff report the remote is easy to understand and use and the chairs assist them effectively and efficiently in their work.

Verona Therapy Chair

Key Features

Verona provides maximum clinical flexibility and the highest level of comfort in areas such as chemotherapy and dialysis. The Verona has a range of movement and the ability to go from a fully upright position to a fully reclined Trendelenburg position, allowing hospitals to use it for initial consultations and treatment. Equipped with up to five electric adjustable motors, the Verona is simplistic in its usability for both patients and clinicians with a picturised handset, to guide users into the desired position.

In addition, the polyurethane arms are cushioned and shaped to facilitate cannulation, and can fold back for easy access from the side of the chair.

New Deneos for The British Airways Health Services Team

The brief

The British Airways Health Services (BAHS) Team provides an immunisation service along with specialist confidential support and advice for aircrew. Pilots and crew may seek advice about health issues, or they can arrange an appointment with an Occupational Health Physician and AME. The Team was looking to upgrade their current chairs for their health centre beside London Heathrow Airport. Kendall, the Occupational Health Practice Nurse, saw Ocura’s Deneo Chairs in action at the Phlebotomy Department at Hemel Hempstead Hospital, and liked the compact, modern design.

The approach

The new chairs needed to be robust, reliable, and compact, but with a futuristic feel to fit the health centre’s design. We provided a Deneo for the staff to trial to ensure the chair met all their needs. Anita, BA Health Centre Practice Manager told us “everybody had a go [using the chairs] and we had good feedback”. The modern design is better for our customers. It looks professional and fits the very high standard offered here”.

The outcome

British Airways Health Services proceeded with a purchase order for the Deneo Chairs, as well as Orkney Operator Stools for the clinicians. They also purchased an Ocura Care service package as a way of protecting

their investment. Our service contracts are a cost-effective way to reduce downtime and enhance the lifetime of your product. They provide a basic Planned Preventative Maintenance strategy, essential for identifying any potential problems whilst helping to keep staff and patients safe when using the furniture.

General Cleaning Instructions

Ocura proudly supplies high-quality products, designed to be used in demanding environments. With the correct care and attention, your furniture will provide many years of useful life. The following information is issued as a guide to help maintain our furniture to high standards of cleanliness and thereby prevent the spread of infection. All surfaces should be diligently cleaned, disinfected regularly, and kept dry to minimize the risk of cross-contamination and damage.

Cleaning and subsequent disinfection must be carried out at regular intervals

The following times are usually observed.

• If required.

• After each patient change.

• In accordance with the guidelines of the operator’s hygiene plan.

The product must always be disconnected from the mains supply by unplugging the mains plug before commencing cleaning work.

All General Surfaces

• Clean all surfaces with a soft, damp cloth and polish completely dry. Abrasive cloth must not be used.

• Any stains, spills or soiling should be cleaned up immediately to prevent the possibility of permanent staining.

• For disinfection, use diluted chlorine products at a strength of 1,000ppm chlorine and 10,000ppm for blood/blood-stained body fluid spillages.

• All surfaces must be kept dry at all times. Exposure to wet or humid conditions could result in rust marks, paint lifting, discolouration, and/or corrosion.

• Do not use concentrated bleach, synthetic detergents, solvents, wax polishes, or aerosol sprays on any surface.

• Using cleaning products contrary to the recommended instructions may compromise the integrity of the furniture and invalidate your warranty.

Electrical Components

• Electrical components must not be exposed to any form of liquid or humid conditions.

• Plastic casings containing actuators or handsets should be cleaned using a soft damp non-abrasive cloth and polished dry immediately.

• Do not use solvents, abrasives, synthetic detergents, wax polishes, or aerosol sprays on any electrical components.

Trolleys and Overbed Tables

• Clean all surfaces with a soft, damp cloth and polish completely dry.

• Under no circumstances should scouring sponges or cleaning agents containing abrasive particles, abrasives or other blunting substances be used.

• All surfaces must be kept dry at all times. Exposure to wet or humid conditions could result in rust marks, paint lifting, discolouration, and/or corrosion.

• Keep trolleys and tables away from direct sunlight.

Vinyl Upholstery

Our vinyl ranges offer excellent stain resistance and cleanability and have been tested for compatibility with the Department of Health and Social Care’s recommended cleaning regimes. Our vinyl is compatible with most NHS-approved cleaning solutions and wipes, including ChlorClean, Haz-tab, Actichlor-Plus, Milton, Clinell and Tristel.

Vinyl upholstery must be cleaned daily in order to maintain its appearance and to prevent any build-up of dirt and contaminants.

1. Wipe clean with a soft cloth (microfibre or similar), lightly dampened with a cleaning agent, if required, and cold water only. Do not use soap or cleaning solutions that contain alcohol, acetates, or solvents (mineral/white spirits).

2. Completely remove excess cleaner with a white, clean, damp cloth.

3. Completely dry the surface with a soft cloth (microfibre or similar). Ensure the vinyl is completely dry before putting the product back into use.

Remove bodily fluid, heavy stains and extreme soiling with cold water immediately.

Any stains, spills, or soiling should be cleaned up promptly to prevent the possibility of permanent staining. Lacquers, strong cleaners, detergents, xylene-based solutions, and acetone may cause immediate damage and contribute to the deterioration of the material. The use of such cleaners is at the end user’s risk.

• Do not use organic solvents (e.g. petrol, benzene, turpentine, toluene, xylene or acetone, chlorides, aerosol sprays, chemical cleaning agents, or wax polishes to clean the vinyl).

• Oil, sweat and blood must be removed immediately. If disinfection is required, use diluted chlorine products at a strength of 1,000 ppm chlorine and 10,000ppm for blood/ blood-stained body fluid spillages. Do not use excessive amounts of water to clean the vinyl.

• Care should be taken to protect the vinyl from oil-based products (including body oils) as continued use will cause the vinyl to harden.

• Dyes and pigments from, iodine, ballpoint pen, lipstick, newsprint, food colourings and clothing, e.g. jeans may be absorbed by the vinyl and cause permanent staining.

• Exposure to wet or humid conditions could result in rust marks, paint lifting, discolouration, or corrosion.

Cleaning results may vary, depending on the size of the stain, the cleaning product used and the time the surface is exposed. The use of unsuitable cleaning agents, disinfectants, the incorrect mixing ratio, and insufficient care of the vinyl can cause damage to the surface coating for which Ocura Healthcare is not liable.
