The Team that Makes it All Come Together

In the spirit of Employee Appreciation Day which we just recently celebrated at the Chamber, I want to use this space to acknowledge the great team that makes this organization run. I am incredibly blessed to work with a team of professionals dedicated to serving Oceanside’s business community. Here’s a quick look at who they are…

Tracy Chin, Chief Operating Officer, is the architect of the great team that we have. Tracy has put her recruiting background to great use by building a team that is cohesive and up to the task. In addition to recruiting and retaining great people, Tracy manages the Chamber’s finances and operations as well as a plethora of other duties.

Porsche Copeland, Events and Programs Coordinator, is focused on making every Chamber event a 10/10 experience for our members and guests. If six major events were not enough, Porsche fills much of her remaining time creating and planning great networking events so our members can make new connections.

Gwen Bryson, Customer Service Specialist , answers every call with a cheerful voice and a great attitude. Gwen is instrumental in our organizational logistics including ensuring that our Best of Oceanside Magazine and other informational pieces are distributed on time.

Vanessa Lee, Business Development Representative, is masterful at helping our small business owners find a membership package that will help grow their business. Vanessa spends as much time as needed with each new member to make sure they understand their benefits and can get great value out of the Chamber.

Sophie Finnigan, Marketing and Communications Manager, has only been with us a few months but has already left her mark by creating beautiful marketing graphics including our weekly Enewsletter and the cover of this magazine. She is also a very talented writer as you will see in this edition of our magazine.

I also want to acknowledge Rosie Hurt who just left us after nearly 2 ½ years on our team. Rosie is a military spouse and will join her husband in relocating to Camp Lejeune. Rosie was loved by our business community and left an indelible mark on our organization with her diversity of talents.

And finally, welcome to Cohen Chin, our Customer Service Intern who just finished day 1 on the job as of this writing. We are excited to have you on our team!

Cultivating Community: THE STORY BEHIND THE PLOT’S SUSTAINABLE

CULINARY REVOLUTION

In the heart of Oceanside, California, lies a culinary gem that transcends the boundaries of traditional dining.

The Plot, a visionary restaurant founded by Jessica and Davin Waite, isn’t just about serving delicious food; it’s a testament to their deep-rooted commitment to sustainability, community empowerment, and culinary innovation.

The journey of The Plot began with Jessica and Davin’s shared passion for food that not only tantalizes taste buds but also champions environmental stewardship and community well-being. With their

background in the local seafood industry through their establishment Wrench & Rodent Seabasstropub, which they opened in 2013, the Waites were already familiar with the transformative power of sustainable sourcing and zero-waste practices. They saw an opportunity to expand their impact by opening a restaurant that not only served exceptional cuisine but also pushed boundaries in terms of health, environment, and local engagement.

At the heart of The Plot’s ethos lies a dedication to supporting local farmers, promoting healthy soil initiatives, and boosting the local economy. By sourcing ingredients locally and growing their own produce on-site, Jessica and Davin not only ensure freshness and quality but also reduce their carbon footprint. Their commitment to plant-based cuisine underscores their belief that delicious food can be both nutritious and sustainable, appealing to a wide range of palates while reducing the environmental impact of traditional meat-centric menus.

member spotlight

For the Waite’s, opening a restaurant in Oceanside was a natural choice. Davin’s deep roots in the community and their love for the area made it the perfect location for their flagship establishment. Beyond simply serving food, they wanted to make a positive difference in the community they cherished. By creating a welcoming space that fosters culinary creativity and community, The Plot has become a beacon of hope and inspiration in Oceanside.

One of the most rewarding aspects of co-founding and owning The Plot, according to Jessica and Davin, is the opportunity to grow their own food. Their onsite garden not only provides fresh ingredients for their dishes but also serves as a powerful symbol of self-sufficiency and food security. By demonstrating that it’s possible to grow food locally and sustainably, they hope to inspire others to embrace gardening and reconnect with their food sources.

But The Plot’s impact extends far beyond its walls. Jessica and Davin are staunch advocates for community empowerment and small businesses. They actively support local initiatives, collaborate with neighboring establishments, and strive to create a sense of unity among Oceanside’s vibrant small business community. By championing local entrepreneurship and fostering a spirit of collaboration, they’re helping to build a stronger, more resilient community for future generations.

In a world where food has the power to heal, nourish, and connect us, The Plot stands as a shining example of what’s possible when passion, purpose, and sustainability intersect. Through their innovative approach to dining, Jessica and Davin Waite are not just serving meals; they’re sowing the seeds of positive change, one delicious dish at a time.

PACE Programs Provide Abundant Resources for Aging Population

According to the 2020 Census 1 out of every 6 Americans is 65 or older, so why is it so difficult to find information on strategies for aging in place successfully? Seniors all over the country are struggling to stay in home, navigate complex medical and social changes, and do it all with a limited income. Seniors who qualify for Medi-Cal coverage, statefunded insurance that is geared towards low-income individuals, have a plethora of options available to them to help with aging in place. One of the most underutilized resources available is through PACE Programming or Programs of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly. These programs are specifically designed to assist low-income seniors with services that enable them to stay at home through customized comprehensive healthcare in their local setting as well as social engagement.

Oceanside’s Chamber is home to two separate PACE programs, San Diego PACE and Family Health Centers of San Diego. Both of these programs have local centers providing medical care throughout the spectrum as well as activities, care services, socialization, meals, and transportation to and from the care centers.

San Diego PACE, which is a non-profit organization affiliated with the San Ysidro Health System, is situated on the border of Vista and Oceanside. Their new state-of-the-art facility contains a multitude of medical services such as primary care, urgent care, case management, physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech therapy. Depending on the needs of the client, they can provide same-day durable medical equipment such as wheelchairs, walkers, grab bars, and other safety equipment needed to stay in the home safely.

In addition to all of these amazing no-cost services, San Diego PACE is committed to the emotional and psychological well-being of their participants.

Their adult day center provides engaging activities throughout the day as well as breakfast and lunch, wellness checkups on-site at each visit, assistance with personal care such as showering and grooming, and medication management while on site. Their in-house pharmacy will deliver medications to the residences of their participation making accessing healthcare easier than ever.

In addition to all of these amazing no-cost services, San Diego PACE is committed to the emotional and psychological well-being of their participants. They offer onsite psychiatric care with physicians, psychiatric medication administration, and therapy. Because PACE programs are all-inclusive, case management is included which enables the participants to easily access all of these services quickly and without barriers such as lengthy phone waits with insurance providers. All services are provided on-site and specialists with transportation can be arranged by the primary care provider. Not currently on Medi-Cal but curious if you might qualify? Contact a PACE enrollment specialist to determine if you might be eligible for services today. Their trained staff can help you through the application process and give you more information regarding services specific to your needs.

Clean Energy Alliance (CEA) will become the new default power provider for the cities of Oceanside and Vista, beginning April 1, 2024, joining existing members: Carlsbad, Del Mar, San Marcos, Solana Beach and Escondido. CEA follows a community choice energy model that allows local governments to purchase power to meet their community’s electricity needs.

As an alternative to San Diego Gas & Electric for power generation, CEA offers residents and businesses clean energy options and competitive rates while reinvesting revenues into projects and programs that benefit your community.

The City of Oceanside has selected Clean Impact Plus (50% renewable/75% carbon-free energy content) as the default energy option for all Oceanside customers. However, CEA empowers customers with choice! Customers have the option to opt up to Green Impact 100% renewable, opt down to Clean Impact 50% renewable, or they may also choose to opt out of CEA and remain with SDG&E.

We look forward to bringing cleaner energy and local control to Oceanside in April!

MIRACOSTA COLLEGE TECHNOLOGY CAREER INSTITUTE LAUNCHES INNOVATIVE TECHNICAL PROGRAMS WITH EMPLOYMENT PLACEMENT

MiraCosta College Technology Career Institute (TCI) proudly announces the addition of groundbreaking technical programs, each accompanied by comprehensive employment placement assistance and materials designed to prepare students for immediate entry into high-demand sectors.

TCI, with substantial backing from the Lowe’s Foundation through a $500,000 grant, is now offering state-of-the-art HVAC and Electrical Certificate Programs. These programs address the increasing need for skilled technicians in the energy efficiency and electrical work domains, crucial for California’s growing infrastructure.

Elevating MiraCosta College’s commitment to sustainable energy and workforce excellence, the U.S. Department of Energy has recognized the college as

one of the new Industrial Assessment Centers (IACs). This inclusion, supported by a $2.1 million grant, cements the college’s role at the forefront of clean energy innovation.

The San Diego Industrial Assessment Center, hosted by TCI, will spearhead the development of an advanced curriculum emphasizing renewable energy technologies and trades, ensuring the next generation of workers is prepared for the challenges of a greener economy.

TCI’s expanded program roster includes the pioneering Aquaculture Certificate Program in collaboration with Scripps Institute Sea Grant and Hubbs-Sea World Research Institute and the state-approved Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Program.

These programs are further enhanced by opportunities for paid scholarships, making the educational offerings accessible to a broader community of learners. Students gain invaluable realworld experience by including employment placement assistance, bridging the gap between academic learning and practical application.

Recognizing the importance of hands-on experience in technical education, TCI has made substantial investments to provide students with the necessary tools, equipment, and resources to succeed in their chosen careers.

For those interested in pursuing a career path with TCI’s innovative programs, scholarships, and outside funding resources are available to assist with financial barriers, and all programs include the necessary materials for success.

OCEANSIDE ARTS & CULTURE: Arts & Economic Prosperity Study

In 2017, the Oceanside's Arts Commission developed O’Arts: Master Plan for the Arts, Oceanside's first cultural plan. The plan articulates an ambitious vision aimed at the celebration, fortification, and advancement of arts & culture throughout the City of Oceanside.

In Oceanside, the arts play a vital role in celebrating the community's distinct history, diversity, and identity. Arts & culture also drive the city’s economy and resilience; and they inspire collaboration and dialogue among the public, artists, arts organizations, and government. Over the last few years, the Oceanside Arts Commission joined Americans for the Arts in a comprehensive study to assess the economic influence of arts and culture in Oceanside. The Arts & Economic Prosperity (AEP) study is a nationwide study currently conducted in 373 communities across the United States.

Arts & Economic Prosperity (AEP) study is conducted every five years to gauge the economic impact of spending by nonprofit arts and culture organizations and the event-related spending by their audiences. The City of Oceanside and Oceanside CA Cultural District were two of nine participating entities in San Diego County alongside City of San Diego, Coronado, Escondido, Carlsbad, Encinitas, National City, and Balboa Park Cultural District . This marked Oceanside's inaugural participation in the study, signifying a pioneering collaboration among communities across the county of San Diego. The collective effort aimed to present a comprehensive and unified portrayal of the major impact of arts and culture countywide.

In San Diego County, the non-profit arts and culture sector is a $1.3 billion dollars industry. Oceanside accounts for $57.7 million in economic activity

16 | Best of Oceanside Magazine Spring 2024 | www.oceansidechamber.com

related to arts and culture, with Oceanside CA Cultural District contributing nearly 80% of the City's overall economic impact, totaling $45.6 million. Notably, the arts & culture sector supported 965 jobs and over $42 million dollars in personal income paid to residents.

Through the AEP6 study, Oceanside identified approximately 90 local nonprofit organizations and venues dedicated to arts & culture. The study collected 800 surveys at 30 distinct arts and culture events throughout the city. This data is a testament to the work of local arts and culture non-profit organizations, creatives, businesses and cultural bearers.

To recognize the impact of arts and culture within the city, the Oceanside Arts Commission is hosting an event to increase visibility and advocacy for the arts. The event will serve as a platform to recognize and appreciate the continuous contributions of local artists, advocates, and organizers. WANT SAND?

…Oceanside’s Pilot Project Moves Forward - Game On!

After the Oceanside City Council’s landmark decision on January 31st to unanimously approve the winning design from the RE:BEACH Oceanside Coastal Resilience Design Competition, part of the Phase 2 Sand Nourishment and Retention Pilot Project (the “Pilot Project”), let’s reflect on progress since 2020 and ongoing efforts to restore Oceanside’s beaches. Amidst town chatter, media coverage, and social media discussions, let’s focus on the facts using a sports analogy: we’ve completed a lengthy first half, and now we’ve just started the second half.

Oceanside beach looking North along the Strand to the pier – note: Wet sandy beach only at low tide

1ST QUARTER: In 2021, Oceanside initiated a year-long study (Phase 1) for the Pilot Project to combat beach erosion. The findings led to extensive public outreach and meetings with neighboring municipalities in the regional sediment transport zone. After the August 2021 workshop, the City Council instructed staff to implement Phase 1 recommendations, emphasizing the refinement of the Pilot Project to include additional sand retention and nourishment options in response to initial concerns.

2ND QUARTER: On January 25th, 2023, the City Council approved a $2.6 million agreement with GHD, Inc. for Phase 2 of the Pilot Project, covering community engagement, baseline monitoring, engineering, analysis and design, and environmental compliance. As part of the Phase 2 contract, RE:BEACH Oceanside determined the sand retention Pilot Project concept through a global design competition, with the winning design called “Living Speed Bumps” by International Coastal Management. The design consists of 2 small headlands to stabilize the back beach and an offshore artificial reef to maintain sand bars and slow down erosive forces. The City Council’s 5-0 vote specifically approved the DESIGN concept, NOT the Pilot Project SITE, which is a crucial distinction to be made. Phase 2 also addresses securing a sand nourishment supply and maintenance program. The California Coastal Commission continues to publicly express their support for the innovative concepts that came from RE:BEACH, lauding the regionally collaborative efforts by the City.

3RD QUARTER: Over the next year, efforts will focus on refining the design using numerical modeling, conducting a siting analysis, and selecting the

Pilot Project location. The siting analysis considers factors such as public amenities, coastal access, land ownership, lifeguard operations, biological resources, downcoast impacts, and sand management logistics. At a summer 2024 Public Workshop, the siting analysis findings will be discussed, with the City Council making the location decision at a Council Workshop slated for fall 2024. Following the location decision, environmental analysis and compliance tasks will commence. An OPTIMISTIC timeline for completing the design, siting analysis, and environmental compliance process is TWO YEARS.

4TH QUARTER: In late 2024 and throughout 2025, the focus shifts to obtaining permits for the Pilot Project from governing agencies, as well as nailing down funding sources. Upon permit approval and securing funding, the installation of the Pilot Project will begin, with construction occurring for roughly one year. Postinstallation monitoring and adaptive management will follow, allowing for adjustments to the sand maintenance program, and potentially the design, based on actual performance. Subsequent phasing (i.e. scaling) of the Pilot Project to additional areas of Oceanside’s coastline will launch from the efforts laid forth in the 2nd and 3rd Quarter, depending largely on the successful integration of the Pilot Project on our shoreline.

With the second half underway, the vision of a resilient and thriving coastline propels us forward, driven by collaborative efforts and a shared dedication to safeguarding our natural treasures for generations to come. Let’s work together to accelerate the momentum and see this through to a bright, sunny day on the sand of Oceanside’s restored and resilient beaches!

Oceanside Leadership Academy Wins “Outstanding Chamber Program Award”

The Oceanside Chamber’s “Oceanside Leadership Academy” program was recognized with an Outstanding Chamber Program Award at the Western Association of Chamber Executives (W.A.C.E.) annual conference on February 7th. The conference, being held in Garden Grove California this year, brings together nearly 400 Chamber professionals from more than 15 states for professional development and networking.

According to W.A.C.E.’s Outstanding Program award application, programs must fit in one or more of the following competencies to be eligible for consideration: Strengthening the Local Economy, Promoting & Improving our Community, Political Action, Representing Interests of Business with Government or Networking & Building Business Relationships.

As part of its commitment to developing leaders to serve in a wide variety of capacities in our community, the Chamber launched its inaugural Oceanside Leadership Academy in April of last year.

The 9-week program begins with an all-star panel of community leaders sharing their leadership philosophies, insight as to how they have led their teams during challenging times, and how they approach leadership on a day-to-day basis. Follow-up sessions include a look at leadership in the military, municipal government, STEM fields, education,

tourism and hospitality, the non-profit sector, and entrepreneurship.

“The Academy has been a tremendous resource for the growth and development of leaders in our business community. It is a great honor to have our program recognized before a group of nearly 400 of our peers,” said Chamber CEO Scott Ashton.

The program has graduated a total of 62 participants so far. Several of Oceanside’s leading employers including Frontwave Credit Union, Genentech, Hydranautics, TrueCare, Arrowood Golf Course, and the City of Oceanside are using Oceanside Leadership Academy as a professional development opportunity for their staff.

Spring and Fall sessions are currently being planned for this year. For more information, please visit www. OceansideLeadershipAcademy.com.

Oceanside Mourns the Loss of Local Business Icon Zell Dwelley

Zellarah (“Zell”) Ann Dwelley

May 9, 1956 – February 17, 2024

The Oceanside community is mourning the loss of long-time local business owner and Chamber member, Zell Dwelley.

Zell lived a rich and fulfilling life dedicated to family, friends, and community, always seeking to make meaningful differences in the lives of others.

In 1988, Zell fulfilled a dream with Gary and opened Beach Break Cafe in Oceanside, California. This small local breakfast and lunch

restaurant, combined with her warm hospitality and culinary prowess, became a gathering place for the community, making an indelible mark on the hearts (and palates) of those who frequented or happened upon this surf-themed establishment.

She was a respected and successful entrepreneur, amazing friend, loving wife, mother, and grandmother. Her friendships and civic-minded contributions were many, including her Beach Cafe Family, The Outrigger Club, Pickleball Family, South Oceanside, PTA’s, Oceanside Chamber of Commerce, Welcome Oceanside, Visit Oceanside, and the California Surf Museum, to name a few, earned her widespread respect and admiration.

She is survived by her husband, Gary; sons, Mitchell, and Harrison; grandsons Russell and Ried; and many others, respectfully. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations in Zell’s name to: The City of Hope, 1500 East Duarte Road Duarte, CA 91010. A celebration of life was held in March at North Coast Church.

Measure X’s Emergency Services Odyssey

In a significant stride towards bolstering public safety, the City of Oceanside embarked on a journey six years ago with the approval of the ½ cent sales tax known as Measure X, which was approved for a period of seven years. As we approach the expiration of Measure X, we’re reviewing the remarkable progress made possible by our community.

Enhanced Emergency Services

A pivotal milestone achieved through Measure X was the implementation of the Fire Department’s Enhanced Emergency Service Delivery Model. This strategic initiative involved the start of an Emergency Medical Technician (EMTs) to elevate service levels. The acquisition of additional ambulances further fortified the City’s response capabilities.

Infrastructure Development

Investing in public safety infrastructure has been a top priority with Measure X, exemplified by the ongoing construction of the new Fire Station 1, set to be completed this spring. This state-of-the-art station will

significantly enhance our capacity to respond swiftly and effectively to emergencies. Measure X funding also facilitated the design and construction of the exemplary Fire Training Tower on Jones Road—capable of replicating various fire scenarios, providing crucial experience for Oceanside Firefighters in safeguarding the city.

Strengthening Law Enforcement

Instrumental in supporting critical initiatives within the Police Department, Measure X empowered the deployment of an additional Crime Suppression Team. Oceanside Police have also benefited from the acquisition of new equipment, including a new crime database and in-car cameras, equipping officers with the latest tools to address evolving public safety concerns.

Measure X revenue also made possible the establishment of an additional Police Homeless Outreach Team (HOT) with social workers and a dedicated van, reflecting Oceanside’s holistic approach to this multifaceted challenge.

Measure X funds have supported a comprehensive study for the expansion and relocation of the Police Headquarters—an effort to optimize resources and

28 | Best of Oceanside Magazine Spring 2024 | www.oceansidechamber.com

create an environment conducive to effective law enforcement. Final locations and costs are still being evaluated.

Cutting-Edge Equipment and Training

Judicious use of Measure X funds has equipped police, firefighter/paramedics, EMTs, and lifeguards with cutting-edge tools. From underwater handheld sonar and automatic compression devices, new dispatch system, drones for ocean rescues, advanced crime analytic tools, and the Fire Training Tower, Oceanside’s emergency response capabilities have reached unprecedented heights.

Investing in the Future

In a strategic move to tackle recruiting challenges faced by departments nationwide, OPD introduced the Police Community Services Officer (CSO) Program. This not only serves as a pipeline for future officers, but engages CSOs in crucial roles such as taking crime reports, handling traffic control, and providing information at headquarters. The CSO program has become a successful pathway for CSOs to transition to other OPD roles, addressing critical staffing needs in the Police Department.

Oceanside EMTs provide valuable medical support, but they also serve as a pipeline for future firefighterparamedics. At a time when staffing is stretched statewide, 20 EMTs have moved on to become Oceanside Firefighter-Paramedics since the program’s launch.

As Measure X approaches its sunset, it is clear that the residents of Oceanside have reaped significant public safety benefits.

Are Ice Baths Good for You? LEARN THE BENEFITS AND RISKS BEFORE TRYING

Ice baths are growing in popularity. They can help with post-workout recovery, reduce muscle soreness and promote overall well-being.

But anyone who wants to try this at home or elsewhere should understand what a cold-water dip or bath does to the body and weigh the benefits and risks and the importance of safety.

Ice baths involve immersing one’s body or specific body parts in icy water, typically in temperatures ranging from 50 to 59 degrees, for a brief period.

The practice of cold-water therapy dates back many centuries. Their resurgence in popularity can be attributed to endorsements by professional athletes and celebrities.

Pro athletes use ice baths to aid in their recovery after intense workouts or competition. Others tout ice baths for other potential benefits, including mental and immune health and chronic pain relief.

So, are ice baths good for everyone?

While ice baths can help with post-workout recovery, they are not a one-size-fits-all solution. Their overall benefits are still being studied. In general, they are not harmful, but they are not meant for everyone.

“People with pre-existing health conditions, such as diabetes or heart issues, should check with their doctor before attempting ice baths to ensure their safety,” says Alex Crane, MD, a family medicine physician with expertise in sports medicine and injury treatment at Scripps Clinic Del Mar.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF ICE BATHS?

Ice baths offer both proven and potential benefits, including:

Relieves sore muscles

Ice baths, or cold-water immersion, promote faster recovery from sore muscles and reduced muscle fatigue after intense exercise. The icy water can help flush out metabolic waste products and decrease muscle soreness after intense workouts. This then leads to reduced muscle soreness and increased postexercise comfort.

Reduces inflammation

The cold temperature of ice baths causes blood vessels to constrict, which can help decrease swelling and inflammation in the muscles and joints. This is especially beneficial for athletes looking to expedite the healing of minor injuries or strains.

Improves mood

Ice baths are believed to stimulate the release of mood-lifting brain chemicals. This natural mood lift contributes to an enhanced sense of well-being and relaxation.

Arthritis management

People with arthritis may find relief through cold water immersion. It can help alleviate joint pain and reduce inflammation, providing temporary respite from the discomfort associated with this condition.

WHAT ARE RISKS AND SIDE EFFECTS?

While ice baths offer potential benefits, they also come with risks and side effects, including:

32 | Best of Oceanside Magazine Spring 2024 | www.oceansidechamber.com

Hypothermia

Prolonged exposure to chilly water can lead to hypothermia, a dangerous drop in core body temperature. This risk highlights the importance of sticking to recommended immersion times and temperatures.

Keep in mind, older adults are more sensitive to cold than younger adults.

Cold shock response

Sudden immersion in icy water can shock the body. This can result in rapidly increased breathing, heart rate and blood pressure.

The initial shock of the cold can also be dangerous as it can increase the risk of drowning if you’re in deep water.

Cardiovascular stress

Ice baths can put stress on the cardiovascular system. They may not be suitable for people with certain heart conditions.

CAUTION TAKING ICE BATHS AT HOME

Ice baths can be done at home or in a chilly lake or at places that offer cold-water therapy supervised by trained professionals.

If you want to try this at home in the safest way possible, check first with your doctor, especially if you have an injury or health condition. There are no

YOUR DREAM, OUR MISSION!

official recommendations for taking an ice bath but studies suggest that staying in cold water for 5 to 15 minutes offers results.

At home, you’ll need a bathtub or an immersion tub, cold water, ice, a thermometer to monitor water temperature and a timer. Staying in the tub can be difficult so start small with 2 to 5 minutes and slowly increase your time in an ice bath.

Make sure to have warm towels and clothes ready when you emerge. Proper equipment and caution ensures a safe and effective experience.

It’s crucial to pay close attention to your body’s response during an ice bath. “If you experience excessive discomfort, numbness or any adverse reactions, exit the bath promptly,” Dr. Crane says. “Safety should always be the top priority.”

ALTERNATIVES TO ICE BATHS

It’s important to note that ice baths are not the only option for post-workout recovery. So before starting any new recovery method, including ice baths, contrast baths or compression therapy, consult with your doctor.

“What works best for you may depend on your fitness level, health status and personal preferences,” Dr. Crane says.

OPERATION APPRECIATION: Chamber to Honor Local Military Families

On Saturday, May 18, 2024 from 11 AM – 4 PM the Oceanside Chamber will bring the community together to provide a day of recognition to active-duty military stationed on Camp Pendleton and nearby military bases. For more than 20 years, the Chamber has hosted Armed Forces Day Operation Appreciation to honor our local military families and to strengthen the relationship between the City of Oceanside and Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton. The event will be held at the Junior Seau Amphitheater and Beach Community Center by the Oceanside Pier.

During Operation Appreciation, thousands of activeduty military and their families are treated to a day of free food, live entertainment and a fun zone for kids. The fun begins at 11 AM and lasts until 4 PM. The day consists of activities including a children’s fun zone with inflatable jumps, rock climbing wall, kid’s crafts and face painting. Members of the military and their families must bring an active-duty military ID card to get unlimited activities and a complimentary lunch. Members of the public can purchase food from

nearby businesses and may also purchase tickets for the fun zone.

“Operation Appreciation has been made possible for all of these years due to consistent sponsorship support from the business community”, said Chamber CEO, Scott Ashton. Businesses who sponsor the event are invited to set up a booth and interact with the military family members.

“There are numerous opportunities for the community at-large to engage in this event”, Ashton added. “For locals interested in participating, dozens of volunteers are needed to make this event a success”. For volunteer and sponsorship information, visit www.OceansideOperationAppreciation.com or call the Chamber at 760-722-1534.

Operation Appreciation is supported by a County of San Diego grant through Supervisor Jim Desmond as well as major corporate sponsorship from Walmart, Genentech, Oceanside Therapy Group and Frontwave Credit Union.

CHAMBER OFFERS CONNECTIONS TO TRANSITIONING SERVICEMEMBERS

The Oceanside Chamber has partnered with Highly Inspired Transitions for Military Veterans (HIT4Vets) to offer a free 6-month “Networking Membership” to the program’s transitioning servicemembers.

The focus of the organization, led by Ed Harrington, is “Veterans transitioning successfully from their military service to the civilian community”. Chamber CEO, Scott Ashton, recently met with four servicemembers participating in Harrington’s program to share information about the Chamber and to invite the servicemembers to take advantage of the Chamber’s upcoming events and opportunities to connect.

“We are thrilled to offer this opportunity for transitioning servicemembers to build community and connect with our businesses. Many of the great business leaders I have met in Oceanside over the past three decades have come here via Camp Pendleton, so we want to encourage local Marines and Sailors to make Oceanside their home upon their exit from the military.”

A Young Entrepreneur’s Journey:

FROM ACE HARDWARE ENTHUSIAST TO COMMUNITY PILLAR

Growing up in the heart of Virginia before relocating to sunny Carlsbad at the age of 8, Logan McEniry’s upbringing was steeped in service and community. Both his parents retired as FBI agents, instilling in him a strong sense of duty and responsibility. Attending Carlsbad High School, he found an early passion for hands-on work, which led him to begin his career at Carlsbad Ace Hardware at the young age of 16. Little did he know that this humble start would pave the way for a remarkable journey ahead.

While many teenagers were contemplating their future paths, Logan harbored dreams of enlisting in the military. However, his parents, recognizing

his academic potential, urged him to pursue higher education. Logan compromised by enrolling in Marquette University and joining ROTC, all while continuing to work at the Carlsbad Ace Hardware when he was home during breaks. Fate took a twist during the COVID-19 pandemic when Carlsbad’s Ace Hardware shuttered its doors, leaving Logan grounded in the community he had grown to love.

Undeterred, Logan transitioned seamlessly to Oceanside Ace Hardware while completing his engineering degree at Marquette, deepening his connections in the community. It was during his senior year that opportunity came knocking in the form of a call to purchase the very store where he had continued his journey. Graduating from college

with an engineering degree and a commission in the Marine Corps, Logan embarked on the dual path of entrepreneurship and military service.

Returning to Oceanside, Logan immersed himself in the day-to-day operations of his newly acquired Ace Hardware before embarking on military training in Virginia and North Carolina. Despite the demands of military service, he continued to run the store full-time, a testament to his unwavering dedication and work ethic.

For Logan, owning Ace Hardware isn’t just about running a business; it’s about fulfilling his lifelong passion for helping others. The joy of seeing customers walk in without a clue and leave with the knowledge and tools to tackle their projects fuels his enthusiasm every day. With Ace Hardware serving as a focal point of the community, Logan relishes the opportunity to interact with customers old and new, creating a space where friendships are forged, and stories are shared.

Under his stewardship, Ace Hardware has become more than just a store; it’s a cornerstone of the community. In 2023 alone, the store boasted 87,000 paying customers, a testament to its enduring appeal.

But Logan’s commitment extends beyond the walls of his store; he believes in giving back to the community that has supported him. Whether through charitable donations, advertising dollars, or simply lending a helping hand, Logan ensures that Ace Hardware remains ingrained in the fabric of the community it serves.

At just 24 years old, Logan’s journey as an entrepreneur and reservist is still in its infancy. Yet, he navigates the challenges of youth with grace and determination, proving that age is no barrier to success. From overcoming the skepticism of elders to juggling the demands of military training, Logan takes it all in stride, fueled by his passion for service and community.

For Logan, the reality of owning Ace Hardware may not always match the expectations, but the satisfaction of making a difference in people’s lives makes it all worthwhile. As he looks to the future, Logan is filled with gratitude for the opportunity to live his dream career, owning Ace Hardware and helping people, one project at a time. Make sure to stop by and say hello to Logan and his friendly Ace Hardware team!
