Oceanside’s Armed Forces Day: Operation Appreciation Honors Military Heroes

Oceanside is gearing up for its annual Armed Forces Day

Operation Appreciation, a heartfelt event dedicated to honoring and celebrating our military’s brave men and women. Created by the Chamber in 2002, this special day brings together the local community to show gratitude for the sacrifices made by active-duty service members and their families.

Operation Appreciation, which takes place at the Junior Seau Pier Amphitheater, is a full-day event filled with festivities designed to recognize the invaluable contributions of the military. From live entertainment to family-friendly activities, the event provides a welcoming atmosphere where service members can relax, connect, and enjoy the day.

One of the event’s highlights is the free food and entertainment provided exclusively for active-duty military members, and their families. Our major food and beverage sponsors include Buffalo Wild Wings, Pick Up Stix, Jersey Mikes, Frazier Farms, Ocean’s Eleven Casino and Urbane Cafe.

A significant aspect of Operation Appreciation is the strong support from local businesses, sponsors, and volunteers. Through their generous contributions, the event continues to thrive each year, reinforcing Oceanside’s deep-rooted connection to the military. Many of the sponsors will be present, offering military resources, giveaways, and interactive experiences.

In addition to food and activities, attendees can enjoy a live musical performance from Grand Sonic Theory, a local dancerock party band.

We offer numerous opportunities for local businesses and community members to engage, including volunteering, sponsoring or advertising on our “We Support our Troops” page of the Operation appreciation magazine.

UROLOGY SAN DIEGO

Kidney Stones Awareness & Treatment

Article provided by Tri City Medical Center

“Although we offer a range of treatment options for kidney stones at Tri-City Medical Center, our goal, first and foremost, is to help prevent the formation of stones so patients don’t have to endure this painful experience,” said Jason Phillips, MD, MBA, FACS, co-founder of Urology San Diego and Chief of the Division of Urology at TCMC.

Kidney stones are pebble-like pieces that occur when urine has high amounts of minerals, salts and uric acid that form crystal deposits that the body can’t dilute. Men are more likely to develop kidney stones than women, as are people with a family history and who’ve had them once already.

Eating a diet high in protein, salt and sugar and being overweight, as well as certain diseases, medications

and gastric bypass surgery may increase the risk of developing kidney stones.

“In San Diego, dehydration is the most common reason we see stones in our practice,” said Dr. Phillips. “People forget to drink enough liquids when they are participating in outdoor activities.”

“Lifestyle and dietary changes can help reduce the risk,” added Dr. Phillips. “I encourage people to drink three liters of water a day, eat fruits and vegetables, and limit their salt intake and meat consumption. Adding lemons and limes to their diet is important as they are a good source of citrate, a potent stone inhibitor.”

Those who get kidney stones may experience symptoms such as a severe pain in the lower back,

a constant need to urinate, pain while urinating, inability to urinate, and bloody, cloudy or foulsmelling urine. More than 500,000 people will end up in the emergency room each year because of kidney stone issues.

“It’s important that people who are experiencing these symptoms see their doctor immediately,” said Dr. Phillips. “A referral to a urologist is critical as the stones could get bigger, cause infection, or become lodged in the urinary track and lead to long-term kidney damage.”

“No one wants to suffer through the pain of kidney stones, which is why maintaining good kidney health is critical,” said Dr. Phillips.

“Once we have diagnosed stones and determined their size, location and composition, we can begin the appropriate treatment,” added Dr. Phillips. “For small stones, we use fluids and medications to see if the stones will pass on their own.”

Extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL) is a treatment that uses ultrasound waves to breakup stones so they can pass from the body in urine; although it is a non-invasive procedure, anesthesia is often required.

“If these approaches are unsuccessful, then surgery may be necessary,” said Dr. Phillips. “The most common procedure for removing stones is ureteroscopy with laser lithotripsy. During this

procedure, I insert a ureteroscope with a camera, into a person’s bladder and up through their ureter to the kidney so that I can see the stones. A tiny, wire basket-like device is used to capture and remove small stones. The laser is used to pulverize large stones about the size of a pea, so they can be removed or pass.”

“For larger stones, we do minimally invasive robotic procedures called percutaneous nephrolithotomy and nephrolithotripsy,” added Dr. Phillips. “Both myself and my business partner at Urology San Diego, Aaron Boonjindasup, MD, MPH, perform these PCNL procedures and we have excellent stone-free rates.”

A small incision is made in the patient’s back through which a nephroscope (miniature fiber optic camera) is inserted into the kidney so that the surgeon can see the stones. A ‘cyber wand’ is also inserted so the surgeon can crush the stones and suction them out. Post-surgery, a thin tube may be left in the kidney to drain the urine and stones into a bag outside of the body. When stones are removed through the tube, it is called nephrolithotomy; when they are broken up, it is called nephrolithotripsy.

“No one wants to suffer through the pain of kidney stones, which is why maintaining good kidney health is critical,” said Dr. Phillips. “Too often, the first time we see patients with kidney stones is in the ER. Our hope is that through increased awareness of the signs and symptoms of kidney stones, patients will see a urologist sooner who can help them manage the condition and improve their quality of life.”

CHAMBER CEO SCOTT ASHTON HONORED WITH COMMUNITY FRIENDSHIP AWARD BY OCEANSIDE POLICE DEPARTMENT

Chamber CEO Scott Ashton Honored with Community Friendship Award by Oceanside Police Department

In February, Chamber CEO, Scott Ashton, was honored at the annual Oceanside Police Department’s Member Recognition Ceremony. Ashton received the “Andrea Sanders” Community Friendship Award which recognizes “civilians or community members who distinguish themselves through unwavering support and friendship provided to the Oceanside Police department”.

Captain Michael Kos, an Advisor on the Chamber’s Board of Directors presented the award to Ashton and noted the great support the Chamber has provided to the Oceanside Police Department (OPD) in its recruiting efforts. The Chamber was recently able to leverage grant funding to produce career videos about OPD for the SOCAL Workforce Website.

MEET ME IN O’SIDE, THE O’RIGINAL

MEETING PLACE

From its earliest days, Oceanside has been a place where people come together. In the late 19th century, “Tent City” brought visitors to the shore for seaside fun, while the early 20th century saw unique parades, beauty contests, and lively events centered around the historic bandshell.

Today, meetings and group events continue to be a vital part of Oceanside’s tourism economy, offering far more than just room bookings.

Meetings help drive tourism during shoulder seasons and weekdays, filling hotel rooms, restaurants, and attractions when leisure travel is lower. This steady stream of visitors provides year-round support for local businesses.

A growing trend is incorporating local products and experiences into meetings programming—ensuring that dollars stay in the community. Whether it’s farm-to-table catering featuring local produce or

team-building activities that highlight Oceanside’s cultural and natural assets, meetings directly contribute to the city’s economic vitality. Many groups also integrate give-back elements, such as volunteer projects, beach clean-ups, or partnerships with local nonprofits. All of these elements help to foster deeper connections between meeting attendees and the

community, ultimately turning them into lifelong fans of O’side.

A prime example: Last September, Oceanside was proud to host the annual CalTravel Summit , bringing together tourism professionals from across the state. The event showcased Oceanside’s unique character, with programming that included a Luiseño land acknowledgement, a beach clean-up, a bike ride through Camp Pendleton, and a stunning celebration dinner beneath the stars at Mission San Luis Rey. During free time, attendees surfed, explored Oceanside’s culinary scene, and experienced the city’s welcoming spirit. Many have already returned with their families—a testament to the lasting impression Oceanside leaves.

In O’side, meetings happen everywhere — from the sand to the surf, from historic landmarks to modern event spaces.

Investing in meetings is part of Visit Oceanside’s sustainable tourism strategy. It’s why we’re introducing a new meetings campaign, The O’riginal Meeting Place, that highlights Oceanside’s unique venues and group experiences that elevate meetings beyond the ordinary.

This initiative isn’t just for out-of-area group business — it’s for you, our local business community too. Whether you are part of a business looking to refresh

the routine or a community group seeking an inspiring venue, Oceanside offers dynamic spaces that spark creativity and collaboration — right outside your front door. You can become a local champion and be recognized for bringing business to your community.

David Morris, CEO, RBB Bancorp and chamber member was instrumental in bringing his board of directors to Oceanside for their annual strategic planning meeting.

“Directors from around the country gathered in Oceanside, immersing themselves in its stunning beach resorts, vibrant culinary scene, and laid-back coastal atmosphere,” Morris shared. “Thanks to the incredible support from Visit Oceanside, our planning efforts were seamless, ensuring a memorable and productive experience. It was rewarding to create a winning experience for my team while making a positive impact on my own community.”

In O’side, meetings happen everywhere — from the sand to the surf, from historic landmarks to modern event spaces. Whether it’s an adrenaline-fueled offsite adventure, a laid-back farm-to-table dinner, or a networking event infused with local flavors, O’side delivers. With a walkable downtown, thriving culinary scene (street tacos, Michelin stars, craft coffee, and more!), vibrant arts district and the perfect blend of beachy energy and military precision, Oceanside is more than a meeting destination—it’s The O’riginal Meeting Place.

SANDAG Adoption of RE:BEACH as the Regional Retention Pilot Project

WHAT WOULD SANDAG ADOPTION OF RE:BEACH AS A REGIONAL PILOT PROJECT MEAN FOR OCEANSIDE?

At the SANDAG Shoreline Preservation Working Group’s December 5th, 2024 meeting, the recommendations of its Sediment Management Technical Taskforce were submitted for consideration. One of those recommendations was to develop regional consensus to install and monitor at least one pilot sand retention project. Keith Greer, SANDAG’s Deputy Director, Environmental Compliance and Climate, further explained that “What it means if SANDAG endorses that project is that we come behind it for seeking funding with Oceanside. So it’s a hand in glove type of thing where we both kind of advocate for the project. It makes sense if we go forward that way, as opposed to seeking some funding for something else.”

Here in Oceanside, some people close to the project were asked what this potentially means for Oceanside. Jayme Timberlake, Oceanside’s Coastal Zone

Administrator, said “The designation of RE:BEACH as the pilot sand retention project is important for the local success of the RE:BEACH Oceanside pilot project, but it’s also important for improving the efficiency and effectiveness of regional sediment management efforts. Both Scripps Institution of Oceanography and the University of California at Irvine have been deeply investigating sediment transport and its variances, with the end result informing how and where best to utilize sand replenishment as a tool to sustain sandy beaches and resilience against rising seas and storms. RE:BEACH Oceanside fits keenly into this space of developing a new understanding of effective coastal management in the face of a lot of coastal uncertainty, and provides a new tool for both Oceanside and the region. Therefore, we’re excited to be considered as the representative pilot project, because it means both a fix to Oceanside’s dire eroded beach conditions,

and offers solutions to other coastlines experiencing a similar fate.”

Oceanside’s Deputy Mayor and City Council Member, Eric Joyce, offered this perspective: “Our RE:BEACH project is an important scientific step for the entire state of California. If SANDAG adopts our project we have the opportunity to gain invaluable understanding for everyone.”

RE:BEACH Oceanside fits keenly into this space of developing a new understanding of effective coastal management in the face of a lot of coastal uncertainty, and provides a new tool for both Oceanside and the region.

From a nonprofit education and community advocacy standpoint, CEO and President of Save Oceanside Sand, Bob Ashton, remarked that “Historically in our San Diego region, we have not done the hard work regarding shoreline management and implementation of beach sand retention structures. During the planning stages of two previous SANDAG regional beach sand projects, retention structures were in the initial proposals but were taken out as they were ‘too controversial and difficult to permit’ and would have delayed the projects. So here we are two decades after the last regional beach sand project and enter the city of Oceanside who does the “hard work” and develops the RE:BEACH sand nourishment and retention pilot project. This project is currently moving through final design and permitting phases. It is only fitting that SANDAG adopt Oceanside’s RE:BEACH as the SANDAG regional

nourishment and retention project. By making it a regional project, the support and involvement of the regional cities will propel it forward through permitting, funding and implementation. Once its performance is studied and validated, what we learn can be applied elsewhere in the region and state to restore shorelines up and down our California Coast and beyond. An additional benefit of having a regional nourishment and retention project will be developing closer collaborative working relationships between our beach cities in supporting each other on coastal solutions. This is something that is not happening now and if we intend on rapidly adapting successful solutions to proactively manage our shorelines, then we must work together. RE:BEACH could be the catalyst that truly brings our coastal region together to cause a positive change for all of our shores.”

To clarify what this could mean for Oceanside, RE:BEACH would remain a City project, not a SANDAG project. Nevertheless, SANDAG would endorse and advocate for it, particularly in securing funding for its completion. Exciting times, indeed, for the future of Oceanside’s beaches.

Oceanside Theatre Company

Partners With MiraCosta College, Palomar College, and California State University San Marcos for Stages Apprenticeship Program

OTC has created a new partnership with MiraCosta College, Palomar College, and California State University San Marcos (CSUSM), to offer college students the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in professional theatre production while earning academic credit.

The Stages Apprenticeship Program will debut with OTC’s production of Once on This Island in March, and will continue with Spring Awakening this Summer. Students will have the opportunity to contribute in various roles, including performing, technical positions, marketing and more, working alongside professionals, as part of OTC’s commitment to supporting the next generation of theatre professionals.

“Partnering with these local colleges for the Stages Apprenticeship Program marks a significant milestone for Oceanside Theatre Company,” shares OTC Managing Director, Alex Goodman. “This collaboration

embodies our commitment to nurturing future theatre professionals by providing them with invaluable realworld experience, while also enriching the cultural fabric of our community. These partnerships expand and enhance our existing education programs for local elementary, middle and high school students. It is a natural progression of our ambition to serve our community from the earliest stages of youth development to professional employment in careers in the arts.”

Through this internship program, students will participate in every phase of the production process, from rehearsals to technical work and live performances. In exchange for their contributions, students will earn college credit, helping them

advance their academic and career goals while gaining valuable professional industry experience. OTC will provide mentorship and guidance throughout, ensuring students receive the necessary support to succeed in a professional setting.

“At OTC, we believe that fostering the next generation of theater professionals goes beyond providing experience—it’s about offering meaningful mentorship and creating an inclusive, supportive space where students can thrive,” explains OTC Artistic Director, Kevin “Blax” Burroughs. “This collaboration with our local colleges gives students the chance to engage with professional artists who actively work in the industry, where they can share their values and contributions to help nurture the growth of the students. We are excited to help shape their journey and empower them to build the skills and confidence they need to succeed in the arts.”

With additional support from the community, this program hopes to serve as a model for youth workforce development in the growing arts sector.

According to Americans for the Arts recent AEP6 study, America’s nonprofit arts and culture sector is a $151.7 billion industry—one that supports 2.6 million jobs, provides $101 billion in personal income to

residents, and generates $29.1 billion in government revenue. Few other industries can compete with arts and culture’s event-related spending, which brought in an additional $78.4 billion in event-related expenditures by their audiences in 2022.

INVESTING IN OCEANSIDE: Made in O’side

Oceanside’s robust manufacturing industry has grown significantly over the last decade. From specialty foods and beverages to action sports equipment to apparel, manufacturing operations throughout the city are creating quality products right here in our own backyard.

Here I highlight just a few of these companies: The now global brand, Suja Life; an auto parts manufacturer that’s been in the business for decades, MagnaFlow; and lastly, a company that has put corporate social responsibility at the forefront, Future Stitch. These three companies provide a small glimpse of some “Made in Oside” products.

SUJA LIFE

Suja opened its Oceanside facility and headquarters nearly ten years ago, tripling the size of its operation that had originally been in San Diego. The expansion was made possible through an investment from the Coca-Cola Company the year prior. Suja leadership recognized the gap in healthy beverage offerings on the market and created a line of organic cold-pressed juices that were not only delicious, but also good for you. Suja’s mission was to make the freshest and most powerful ingredients conveniently available in a form closest to the living plants they originated from.

Since their start, Suja has expanded their product line to include organic, vegan, GMO-free protein shakes and nutritional, cold-pressed juice shots created for specific wellness goals with names like “Energy”, “Immunity” and “Digestion.” Most recently, Suja acquired the popular 1980s soda brand “Slice”, which was originally owned by Pepsi. Suja’s plan is to release a healthier version of the soda that contains prebiotics, probiotics, and postbiotics, and is low in sugar and calories.

“Being in the military we moved a lot, but family decided to settle here in California and chose Oceanside. Here are some of the reasons why I love O’side so much:

1. Historic Pier, Top Gun House and the beach is stunning

2. Weather is the best

Dining options are amazing, especially Valle which is a Michelin Star Restaurant

Proud to be working at the Number 1 Resort Hotel in the US and California (Mission Pacific) & Number 3 California Resort Hotel by Travel & Leisure

5. Lots of places to visit like the Museum of Arts, Mission San Luis Rey, Sunset Market every Thursday and Fin Hotel to name a few. As a local, we cannot ask for more as we have everything here.”

Cristina Chavez

“Oceanside is more than just a beautiful coastal city, it’s a place where businesses and residents come together to create something special. There’s a spirit of collaboration here, a sense that we’re all working toward the same goal: making our community stronger, kinder, and more connected.

From local shops supporting neighborhood events to families gathering for beach cleanups, Oceanside thrives on the love its people pour into it. It’s a city where a small act of kindness can ripple out into something bigger, where partnerships turn into friendships, and where every person has a role in making this place feel like home.

That’s what makes Oceanside so special to me. It’s not just where we live, it’s a community we build together.”

Porsche Copeland

Over the years I’ve watched Oceanside grow into a vibrant beach community that has a thriving restaurant scene, beautiful hotels & accommodations, tons of fun activities to do and places to see, and a hardworking business community, all supported by the proud residents of this beautiful city.”

“I love O’side because this city has proven itself to be a vibrant and engaging community that provides excitement and opportunity.  It’s a city which I’ve grown to love over the years, and a place that I find myself bragging about to friends and family.  My favorite part is the food and community that can be found downtown!  Lastly, I love how small businesses are embraced and supported in this community.  Keep being cool O’side!”

JITTERS COFFEE PUB:

A New Era of Community and Sustainability

For over two decades, Jitters has been a cornerstone of the Oceanside coffee scene, serving as a warm and welcoming hub for locals. Owned by Vallie Gilley, the beloved coffee shop has stood at its current location for the past 20 years. As they approached a crucial lease renewal decision, thoughts of selling or closing the shop were on the table — until a close friend, Grammy-winning musician Jason Mraz, stepped in with a vision to preserve this community gem.

Encouraged by Mraz, who has long been an advocate for community-driven businesses, Jitters is embarking on an exciting new chapter. The coffeehouse is now

entering a partnership with Jason Mraz, Chef Felix Alcaide, Vallie Gilley, and Clayton Ballew, bringing fresh energy, new ideas, and a strengthened commitment to the community. The team is dedicated to making Jitters an even more dynamic gathering place.

While maintaining the cozy and eclectic charm that makes Jitters special, the space is undergoing thoughtful renovations. With Jason lending a hand in the design, the updates will blend modern touches with the shop’s signature warmth. A new stage with lighting will provide a platform for live music and

community events, and an expanded private parking lot will accommodate more guests. Additionally, Jitters is teaming up with neighboring businesses to create a lively event space, reinforcing its role as a community hub.

The culinary experience at Jitters is also getting a refresh. The new menu will feature a Europeaninspired selection of plant-forward yet inclusive options, catering to both plant-based and meateating customers. Highlights will include a unique breakfast sandwich, fresh salads, flatbreads, and light bites—all crafted from scratch. Sustainability remains at the forefront, with a continued commitment to compostable to-go containers and reusable mugs. Jitters has always embraced sustainable practices, and this new era will take that commitment even further. Customers are encouraged to bring their own cups, and the coffee shop will continue roasting its own coffee. Looking ahead, Mraz’s personal connection to coffee cultivation will introduce exclusive coffee tastings, offering a truly farm-to-cup experience. Additionally, Jitters will feature a marketplace with farm-fresh products like avocados, passion fruit, sourdough bread, and locally made ice cream from Little Fox Cups and Cones.

With a slow rollout underway, the grand reopening is set for summer. This phased approach allows the team to fine-tune operations and ensure a seamless experience for customers. Exciting events, competitive staff wages, and a renewed dedication to supporting small businesses are all part of the vision for Jitters’ next chapter.

“A coffee shop is a club house; a third environment that’s neither the home nor office. It nourishes you in coffee, comfort food, and community. I started my career strumming songs in the corner of a coffee shop. It’s my origin story. So, I know what it’s like to be both a customer and someone in the hospitality industry. I’m most interested in preserving Jitters it’s a special place for our community to gather for good food and good fun.” Quotes Jason Mraz, “And great coffee!”, quotes owner Vallie Gilley.

Follow Jitters on Instagram for updates on a Summer grand opening that promises to bring the Oceanside community together over great coffee, fresh flavors, and a shared love for sustainability.

OCEANSIDE CELEBRATES RENAMING OF CHARLESETTA REECE ALLEN POST OFFICE BUILDING

Several months ago Rep. Mike Levin (CA-49) applauded then President Joe Biden for signing into law his bill designating the United States Postal Service facility located at 517 Seagaze Drive in Oceanside as the “Charlesetta Reece Allen Post Office Building.”

Rep. Levin’s bill received the support of the Oceanside Mayor Esther Sanchez, the full bipartisan Oceanside City Council, and San Diego County Supervisor Jim Desmond, who represents Oceanside. On February 25, 2025 Rep. Levin held a renaming ceremony at the Oceanside Post Office.

“I’m thrilled that the Post Office on Seagaze Drive is now named after Charlesetta Reece Allen. She was one of the first Black leaders in our community and deserves to be recognized and remembered for all she did for the area,” said Rep. Levin. “Ms. Allen was a businesswoman, a minister, founder of the Oceanside Girls Club, and first President of the North County National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). She dedicated her life to uplifting our community and improving the lives of countless residents. This official designation is a testament to her legacy and a reminder of the importance of honoring those who have paved the way for progress. I’m grateful to all my colleagues who ensured this legislation passed with overwhelming bipartisan support, and I look forward to the upcoming dedication ceremony.”

Background on Charlesetta Reece Allen

Charlesetta Reece Allen was born in Texas in 1913 to Thomas and Stella Reece and was the oldest of eight children. She came to Oceanside in the 1930s, where she met and married local resident John Callen Mann. They eventually moved to the Eastside neighborhood in Oceanside, and she is believed to be just the third Black woman to live in Oceanside. Charlesetta helped to establish the first Black Church in Oceanside, located in Eastside.

Charlesetta worked as a cook in the Casa Blanca restaurant in downtown Oceanside before she began to cater food out of her home and eventually opened her own restaurant, the first Black-owned storefront in Oceanside. Her restaurant was a popular social gathering spot for Black residents who arrived during and after World War II.

She held Vacation Bible School during the summers and single-handedly cared for up to 65 children of all races from her neighborhood and she sponsored the Well-Mannered Club, teaching young people proper poise and etiquette. Charlesetta always sought to help and lift up others in a variety of ways, sewing clothes for needy children and advocating for the military families in her neighborhood.

After her husband John’s death, she later married Reverend Wesley H. Allen.

Charlesetta helped to found the Oceanside NAACP in 1959 and later served as president from 1965 to 1969, (now known as the North County NAACP for Branch #1086.) She also began a girls club which became the Oceanside Girls Club and served as its director. Charlesetta was awarded the San Diego Sojourner Truth Award in 1969 for many community contributions.

Charlesetta passed away on September 28, 1983. Although she never had children, she is survived by many nieces and nephews who were present at the renaming ceremony, many of whom live in Oceanside but also came from New York, Georgia and Colorado to witness this historic event.
