Let it Go

In 2018, the Oasis Montagé staff blazed the trail overlooking the Jerome Bridge. They took a clear vision of how to plunge into a fresh new direction and they did it. We let go of the old and put on the whole armor of God to conquer stagnated growth. God is great and He has a sense of humor; He lets you go through the storm and rain to give you a testimony of triumph. It is important to shed off the old because everything and everybody can’t go with you to your new destination. What God has for you is for you. In 2018, the Oasis Montagé journey started with the grand opening of the performing arts center. We ended 2018 with a bang of a television partnership. C3 Network (Courtney Clark) has blessed our Magazine with an inspirational talk show on 108 Praise Radio and a television channel. When God clears the path, you hear his voice with clarity and change comes. I found it is important to keep good company with saints not misleading selfish sinners. Saints of God will empower, educate, uplift, and seek to help elevate your walk. “Shh,” the secret is out, it is better to listen to God and let Him move those that cloud His vision and journey He has for you. In this issue of Oasis Montagé Magazine, we are taking you on a historical multi-cultural journey into our black history. We are visiting the life of Legendary Artist Aretha Franklin, a community walk down memory lane of Hosea Williams to the Underground Railroad of Harriet Tubman, and The Harlem Renaissance. We are also sharing the nationwide news of our television father, Bill Cosby and Legacy Lawyer Henry Service. Every year the Oasis Montagé staff tours Essence Festival

Relationships, bad business deals and anything that stumped your growth in 2018 are clear indications that it’s the time and season to let it go. Unfortunately, negative relationships can be toxic, cloud your vision and stagnate your elevation. How do you know when it’s time to let it go? Take an honest clear look and ask yourself, “Have I grown; and if not, who or what kept me from that growth?”

in New Orleans and in 2018, they encountered fashions featured by Kim West as they brought on the styles QMS. Oasis Montagé dazzles your mind with events that empowered Women on the Rise and inspired veterans on their holiday. When you let go of yesterday, remember what the famous OJ Simpson’s lawyer Johnnie Cochran says, “If it doesn’t fit, you must acquit.” Let it go.

letters to the editor Amazing Couple

This was an amazing issue. I truly enjoyed the story on Megan Markel and the Prince. They are a beautiful couple. You can see the love in this couple. It is wonderful to see a black sista in the lifestyle of the rich and famous. To live at Buckingham Palace must be an amazing experience. Megan, you rock sister girl. Congratulations to this amazing couple. Julie Landsdown, Pueblo, CO

Finally Tied the Knot

The article on Lisa Bonet was really a great story. I am so happy for Lisa and Jason. They are an extraordinary couple that most find unusual. They remind me of the show, The Beverly Hillbillies.” They are so original and take their children upbringing very serious. It’s all about being able to survive in a crazy world so they keep them secluded out of the city rat race. Hats off to this couple. Glad to see they finally tied the knot.. Amy Jenkins, Kansas City, MO

Beautiful Family

There is joy in the air for the fabulous couple Lisa Bonet and Jason Momoa. Congratulations to this couple for getting married after being together for years. I am sure Jason being so much younger and this being Lisa’s 2nd marriage made it hard for her to try again when things didn’t work out with her and Lenny Kravitz. It was cool to see such a blended family. The children look happy and they look amazing together. Terry Stansberry, Valrico, GA

The Royal Family

I really like this last issue with the prince and princess of Buckingham Palace. I wish them well with the new birth of their upcoming child. I am sure they are elated to have an heir in the kingdom. Princess Diana would be so proud of her son, he married a beautiful black woman. Randal Smith, San Diego, CA

Madea and Child

I loved the Fashion section of this issue. It was wonderful to see the beauty of a mother and child bonding with love. The story about the Prince and Princess at the palace was wonderful. Great job to the writer and great array of pictures. It made you feel like you were actually at their wedding. Congratulations to the couple with their upcoming newborn. Linsey Johnson, Denver, CO

Meeting Mrs. Carolyn Jones was one of the most extraordinary moments for me; she’s such a lovely, free hearted spirit. I never imagined that from that first meeting that we would have become not just sisters in Christ, but true loving friends. Being one of the lead actresses in her true-life story, “Real Men Wait While Women Shoptalk” brought so much life to me being able to live through her life story. Nothing like the love that each of us shared through this journey that we all became family. With the respect and trust that Mrs. Jones had for me, I was employed with Mrs. Jones and Oasis Montage Ministries as their “Legal Beagle”; VP of Oasis Montage Magazine and Assistant Director of Stage Plays. I’m very humbled to be such a great representative for Mrs. Jones and Oasis Montage Ministries in each aspect. I’ve been awarded the opportunity to meet and work with some phenomenal people. Actors; Actresses; Singers, and Radio/Talk Shows in and out of Atlanta, GA. You know I never thought I’d enjoy acting as much as I do, but you know the most exciting about it is after the cameras are not running and you get to speak with the men and women after shows, gives you such a genuine love for what you do. I’ve been in law for over 25 years and truly love my practice. Knowing that I’m making a difference in someone’s life is so meaningful to me.

I had the opportunity to work for a woman that is extraordinary to our state, Ms. Stacey Abrams. Unfortunately, due to conflicts with my schedule, I was unable to continue after the interview stage. Just knowing what she stands for is enough. I’d like to say that she has my full support in her journey to create great change. She has such power in her words of motivation; such strength and courage that would make you feel you can conquer the world. I’m a true believer in honesty and peace and I feel that is what Ms. Stacey Abrams brings. Family is everything! Praying for continued blessings for you all; Mr. and Mrs. Jones and family; Oasis Montage Ministries and Shoptalk Family. Lisa M. Justice for all By Atif McQueen

I

In the early years of the 1900’s, there were signs that read, “Whites only and no colored people allowed.” Racism was alive and enforced long after slavery was abolished. The unfair treatment of African Americans was horrific. African Americans were tortured, abused and mis-treated. To fight the injustice, there were civil rights movements that included the non-violent protest of Martin Luther King and the “by any means necessary” stance of Malcom X. Even after the civil rights movement of Martin Luther King, his plight of “We Shall over Come,” didn’t progress until after his assassination. Today, we still fight for equal rights. The nation accomplished a lot under the leadership of our black president, Barrack Obama. The discrimination of health care was resolved and the economy was stabilized. Although those are major 8 OASIS/Montage January • February 2019

accomplishments, the fight for equality and fairness still exist. The fight of fair treatment and justice for all is an everyday struggle. The legendary Lincoln Historical Building in downtown Kansas City, Missouri, owned by attorney Henry C. Service, is a 2-story building provides space for media groups, social networking, restaurants, salons and shopping. This building serves for collaborative business relationships and individuals to have access within for their culture. This building is a rarity because it has a disability sign for pregnant women. Puquaslie, an Apache woman says, “When I was pregnant, it was difficult to walk a long distance. I took my daughter, Zu’Ryan downtown to the Jazz District, and we toured the Lincoln Historical Building. I was so excited when I found a parking slot in front of the building.” AC McQueen, Founder of Sacred of Inutero Society says, “For some, success is measured by accomplishments, but Henry Service is a man that gives to those that have a need. His donations to non-profit organizations speaks with a legacy of lives saved.” He was raised in Jamaica and married to Kimberly, a Caucasian woman. He is true a fighter for his black culture. This resident of Kansas City made history when he fought for the fair treatment and equality for the inmates of The Missouri Correctional Facility. He won this $150,000 lawsuit because he stood for equality and the stance

on good leadership. He is not a man that can be swayed or maneuvered to be sold the highest bidder. One woman says, “Henry is a very caring and knowledgeable attorney. He helped my daughter with her custody hearing for her daughter and led her in the right directions. We were very impressed with his service.” Although racism, and discrimination is a lifetime fight, the mission of Henry C. Service firm mission is, “We offer potential clients the same resources as many large firms, without sacrificing the personalized focus and attention that comes with a modest-sized staff. The Service Law Offices of Kansas City, LLC has forged many alliances across its history, and will use all the tools needed to earn the judgment you seek. Whether you face a jury trial, civil trial or administrative proceeding, our of highlyskilled attorney will be beside you every step of the way.” The firm that will fight for your equality. The Service Law Offices of Kansas City, LLC has provided quality service in a variety of legal areas throughout the Kansas City metropolitan area. OASIS/Montage January • February 2019 9

The Voice for the Voiceless By Clarice Carolyn Jones

“In a time when too many folks are focused simply on how to win an election, Stacey’s somebody who cares about something more important: why we should. That’s the kind of politics we should practice. That’s why I’m proud to give Stacey Abrams my support.”

—President Barack Obama

S

Stacey Abrams, a hard-working democrat woman was a guest speaker at the 2018 Essence Festival. There she shared her views and leadership strategies to make a difference. She has earned the honor and respect of the Georgia communities by proving to be a strong woman that will accomplish what she plans to accomplish. In 2010, Stacey became the first woman leader of either party in the Georgia General Assembly as well as the first African-American woman to lead in the House of Representatives. This House Minority Leader worked dilegently to recruit, train, elect, and defend Democrats. During her leadership, she stopped legislation from raising taxes on low income and middle class and rolled back reproductive healthcare. Stacy passed legislation that improved the welfare of grandparents and family members raising children securing funding that supported these families. .

Stacy’s campaign trail was supported by several public figures to include President Barrack Obama and Oprah Winfrey. They knocked on doors along with her to let communities know they needed to vote. Although she lost the election, she gained strength to continue to fight for equality and fair voting rights. Stacy says, “My faith demands that I speak up for the voiceless and the vulnerable-that a soul finds rest only by doing the most for the least of these.” OASIS/Montage January • February 2019 11

Every year during the holidays, volunteers of the Hosea Feed The Hungry And Homeless, Inc.” comes together to feed the homeless. During this holiday, they serve food, provide showers, clothing, barber services and entertain the homeless while they eat their meal. On Thanksgiving day, Prince Nephew & DaMill along with the QMS Girls, performed with a song and dance for the homeless families in downtown Atlanta at the World Congress Center. Hosea and his wife Juanita Williams, founded the nonprofit organization as a provision to provide food, shelter and clothing to the homeless. They say, “We can prevent homelessness, provide children with tools for school, seniors with fresh fruits and vegetables and continue our 47-year journey to alleviating the effects of poverty on our families.”

One woman says, “I was able to be a blessing to a special organization that help so many people especially families with children in need. It was more than a privilege! I can remember donating financially and it always helps them to do more each and every time. Each year they give so much and provide the very best for people and I was able to be apart of that. I have a passion to help others and it makes me feel good to even be able to do that...meeting someone else’s needs instead of my own all the time! It means a lot to me to see that we can make a difference in the smallest of ways in many different areas of the world and for that I am forever grateful!” OASIS/Montage January • February 2019 13

The hush of the room was palpable. The only sounds that were audible were the nondescript coughs of agitation within the court room. The defendant stood and the judge spoke. Sentencing had begun. Three to ten to serve, must register as a sex offender. The gavel came down to a rest. As one side of the court room fell into silent despair, the other side showed joyous rancour for receiving the outcome they had longed for. Bill Cosby had gone from being the cool dad that everyone wanted, the I spy of the 60’s and Fat Albert of our youth, to the predator of things never imagined. A virtual antipathy seeped like sweat from some who once loved this man. OASIS/Montage January • February 2019 15

features The decision of the court left many of us wondering how did this happen. I can not condone the behavior and actions of Mr. Cosby; neither can I with all honesty say he alone is guilty in all instances. To me, and you may well have a different opinion, in some instances, others are just as complicit in the grand scheme of things. The America of now, and most definitely of the 60’s was not pro black male when it came to forcing a woman into any behavior she was against. A call to the authorities would have had him in jail before he drew his next breath. Then to go back, as some did, after such a tumultuous incident blows my mind. Why would one do such a thing? I just can’t wrap my mind around it. If you touch a hot stove, you don’t touch it again. In other words fool me once shame on you. Fool me twice shame on me. The entire situation is unfortunate. Mr. Cosby has to be held accountable for his choices, his actions but, there is still the mendacity that hangs heavy within the nostrils of

Lady Justice. The mendacity of which I speak is simply that Mr. Cosby engaged in what has been called unwanton sexual behavior. Now let us consider the means to an end behavior and desiredend result of the other parties. I believe it was an eyes wide shut situation on all parts. Mr. Cosby had in his mind elevated himself to an entirely different mental plane of blackness. He was a “good black man” accepted in all circles. To himself, and at the expense of his wife, he was; he thought above it all. The women, some were in awe of the black male mystique of of the 60’s and others trying to achieve fame and fortune wanted to climb that superstar ladder. For most that climb never amounted to their aspirations. There is blame to be shared by all. Hindsight is 20/20, and foresight is a blessing, but one must remember that as life takes one on this journey of fortune and mishap, once you jump down the rabbit hole be careful it’s a different world from where you come from.

Back on August 31st, 2018 on a very sunny day in Detroit outside the Greater Grace Temple church, stood 150 pink Cadillacs of different models to celebrate the passing of Aretha The Queen of Soul Franklin. Owed to her 1985 hit song Freeway of Love, it describes her infinity for pink Cadillacs. OASIS/Montage January • February 2019 19

On March 25th, 1942 in Memphis, Tennessee, Aretha Louise Franklin was born in the home of Clarence LaVaughn Franklin, a Baptist minister and circuit preacher originally from Shelby, Mississippi and Barbara Siggers Franklin, an accomplished pianist and vocalist. Besides Aretha, her parents also had her siblings Erma, Carolyn and Cecil. There were also 3 others outside the marriage. Her family moved to Detroit, Michigan then to Buffalo, NY and back to Detroit before she turned 10 years old. In that time period, her parents divorced and unfortunately her mother passed away. She became a musical prodigy with a golden voice that sang gospel as a child while playing the piano (which she learned playing by ear) at the New Bethel Baptist Church. At the age of 18, she changed to gospel when she signed with Columbia Records, a modest success. After signing with Atlantic Records in 1966, she started to gain the acclaim and commercial success; with a plethora of hits such as R-E-S-P-E-C-T, Chain of Fools, Think, You Make Me Feel Like A Natural Woman and many more classics. These classics earned her the moniker of The Queen of Soul. Despite never being signed to Motown Records, she was always considered to be family to record label. She grew up and was great friends with Motown legends such as Diana Ross and Smokey Robinson and many others. She has charted on the Billboard with 112 singles, 77 Hot 100 entries, 17 Top 10 pop singles, 100 R&B entries and 20 No. 1 R&B singles. Becoming the most charted female in history, she also garnered 18 Grammys, including the very first 8 awards given for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance from the years of 1968 through 1975. Being the best musical artist of all time with 75 million records sold worldwide. 20 OASIS/Montage January • February 2019

With all the awards she earned, her induction into Rock & Roll Hall of Fame was in 1987. She was the very woman inducted and that was huge. As well as the National Medal of Arts (1999), Hollywood Walk of Fame (1979), Grammy Legend Award (1991), Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award (1994), Presidential Medal of Freedom (2005), UK Music Hall of Fame (2005) and Gospel Music Hall of Fame (2012). She’s also listed in 100 Greatest Artists of All Time and 100 Greatest Singers of All Time by the Rolling Stone. In 2008, the Rolling Stone ranked her as the Greatest Singer of All Time. She also received numerous of honorary degrees & doctorates from 11 different colleges. Despite the many accolades, Aretha was a home body who enjoyed cooking and was a twice married mother to four boys; Clarence, Edward, Ted & Kecalf. She had her eldest two at the young age of 12 and 14 respectively. Children never deterred her from pursuing her legendary music career. She raised her boys to become men and in the process was a global icon who touched and inspired so many with her music. She was also a philanthropist as well as an activist. She was highly immersed in the struggle for civil rights and women rights. While providing money for civil rights groups, at times she even covered their payroll while for free, she performed at rallies, benefits and protest. She was very giving woman. She also critiqued other artists and spoke her mind. The little tiff she had with Patti LaBelle has donned Ms. Franklin the honor of Shade Queen.

Throughout her life, Aretha battled weight and health issues. Especially the last 8 with pancreatic cancer. The cancer finally succumbed to her passing on August 16th, 2018 amongst family and friends. The news of her passing away was met with heart felt messages on all social media platforms from celebrities and fans throughout the whole world. The world paused for a moment to mourn and celebrate the life of Aretha Louise Franklin. On that sunny afternoon at the Greater Grace Temple in Detroit, Michigan; outside the 150 pink Cadillacs stood outside looking good under sun which ranged from vintage models to the latest ones. Inside the church the home going service which was televised, live streamed and recorded on a plethora of networks and platforms. The service was over 8 hours long full with dignitaries, musicians, family members and throngs of fans in attendance. Pastor William J. Barber led the service as songstresses such as Jennifer Hudson, Yolanda Adam, The Clark Sisters, Jennifer Holliday and many more serenaded the crowd with a rendition of all of Aretha’s classic hit songs. Despite this homegoing service being one of the longest and extravagant ones in recent memory, The Queen of Soul was well honored. She has gracefully left us on this earth with some memories and an array of GREAT groovy musical hits. Songs with everlasting love, honor, dignity and R-E-S-P-E-C-T. Rita Daniels is a Queenpreneur who happens to be the great, great, great grand niece of the iconic Harriet Tubman. She’s on course to continue to help and advocate for folks in the black community via The Harriet Tubman Learning Center (HTLC). Below Ms. Daniels answers my questions with very thoughtful, poignant and powerful answers! 1)Tell me a little about yourself? “I was born in Auburn, New York where Harriet Tubman lived the last 50+ years of her life, where she died and is currently buried at Fort Hill Cemetery. This is also where my deceased family members are also buried (Grandparents, Aunts, Uncles, Father, etc.). I have Two grown children (Ronald Franklin Nash and RiShana Dior Nash (both married) and I have 4 grandchildren (Kierra, Kalen, Mia and Amiyah). I went back to school at the age of 60 to earn my master’s degree in Education and my bachelor’s degree in Human Resources. It was my belief that if I went back to school, I would position myself with the credentials to open a “private” school in honor of my great, great, great Aunt’s name – The “Harriet Tubman Learning Center” (HTLC) starting in Atlanta where the school is needed and then throughout the United States where a school of this magnitude is necessary (especially in the low-income communities.” 2) What is your relation to Harriet Tubman? “Harriet Tubman is my Great, Great, Great Aunt.” 3) How proud are you to be a part of Harriet Tubman’s lineage? “Elated.”

 4) What were your initial thoughts when you found out you are related to this historical icon? “My initial thoughts were that of mixed emotions. For 1, being related to a slave who had a bounty on her head and for 2, being proud that she was never

caught for freeing nearly 300 slaves - she is also slated to be on the $20 bill and that leaves me with mixed emotions – happy for her being recognized as an icon – but also what money currently stands for is “root of evil.” 5) When you hear your great great aunt’s name what comes to mind about her? “How proud I am of her total dedication of giving back to others. It reminds me that her work is not done and how important she was to others in obtaining their FREEDOM! She made those 19 trips on feet to ensure Freedom for others – her HEART was huge!” 6) What inspired you to create your community center? “Harriet Tubman was vehemently denied an education and therefore could not read or write - she died illiterate…This is still a problem although Blacks are given equal rights in education, however, many of our people are still illiterate. They are reading below grade level and just knowing that an eighteenyear-old young man is reading at only a fourthgrade level is heart breaking to me and it should be to everyone else. The Harriet Tubman Learning Center is necessary because our mission is to combat

illiteracy! It is time to make a difference in the lives of our young men, otherwise, the prisons continue to make room for them…slavery continues in the prison system because our children are failing in the public schools. The Harriet Tubman Learning Center offers literacy programs that include Stem (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) educational opportunities are needed and should be offered to children who are otherwise would not have access to this type of advanced education.” 7) Where did the name for the center derive from? “The Harriet Tubman Learning Center name is a result of Harriet Tubman’s name.” 8) How rewarding is it for you when you give back to the black community? “It is my duty to give back to the community. Because of my lineage, it is necessary to continue the Harriet Tubman legacy as a family member. This is what she would want the family to do in her honor.” 9) What is the mission statement/motto that keeps you going in giving back to the black community? “The Learning Center’s mission is to combat the extraordinary phenomenon of illiteracy that has plagued our youth for decades due to the lack of viable resources and segregation. While supporting the development of educational opportunities, Harriet Tubman Learning Center offers a thorough and comprehensive foundation for the future achievement of students through our individual attention via assessments and evaluation.” 10) What impact do you feel you have in giving back to the black community? “If she were alive today, we believe that Harriet Tubman would make sure that not only she can read and write, but also relive the Underground Railroad. She would go out and find others who are being vehemently denied an education and she would ensure that other children have this same opportunity. Illiteracy is a problem in the inner cities and it is also my duty to continue this phenomenal Legacy of Harriet Tubman through our programs.” 11) How important is it for you carrying on the legacy of Harriet Tubman? “Her work is not over –her legacy must continue through her family -and what better way to continue her legacy than by giving back to the community. This is something she was vehemently deprived of – the ability to read.” 12) Do you feel like you’re up to the task in

carrying out Harriet Tubman’s legacy? “Yes I can and I will continue the Legacy of my great, great great Aunt.” 13) Where do you see yourself 5-10 years from now? “Getting older – “I’m 64.” 14) If you ever had the chance to speak to your great great aunt, what would you tell her? “I would tell my Aunt how much I admired her advocacy.” 15) What is one thing you would like to impart with our beautiful black people all throughout the world? “The Harriet Tubman Learning Center is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that focuses on the illiteracy issues that has plagued our inner cities for decades. The Harriett Tubman Learning Center is dedicated to empowering communities through programs that offer hope and successful future. Many communities are without jobs, homeless, hunger, and they need literacy assistance. Our goal is to initiate strategies that will provide exceptional science-based programs proven to empower youth and propel them towards future sustainability (i.e. completing job applications, resume assistance, literacy programs, Stem Program, GED Assistance, Youth Entrepreneur Classes, etc.). I am continuing a Legacy that deserves recognition, even 100+ years after her death. Since my great, great, great Aunt was not given the opportunity to read or write, she died illiterate. If she were alive today, we believe that Harriet Tubman would make sure she could read and write as well as ensure that other children have this same opportunity. Illiteracy is a problem in the inner cities and it is our duty to continue this phenomenal Legacy of Harriet Tubman through our programs.”

The woman they call Moses had the strength and wisdom to lead others on a freedom trail. The leadership of Harriet Tubman’s footsteps lead the way for the African American to be free at last.

Fall/Winter 2018 Fashion Trends From Paris Fashion Week

W

With politics and world events changing on a daily basis, one must ask themselves who has the time to create a winter wardrobe? The answer to this question is that we must get dressed daily and be the best version of ourselves. As stated by Bozoma Saint John, “bring your whole self to work because, that way, you can bring full ideas and the wholeness of your unique abilities.” Dressing the part is considered the first step to manifesting those unique abilities. The winter season is no different. Dressing for cooler temperatures can become intimidating without the right guidance. There are so many clothing trends, textures, and accessories being offered online or in-store. To help with this dilemma, style experts will agree that fashion starts from the runway and trickles into the mainstream retail industry. Entertainers and influencers have drastically altered the fashion hemisphere, emerging new designs immediately into the digital space. A few of the popular global trends for Fall/Winter 2018 include pastel hues, elegant ruffles, and sheer glam. Designer, Armine Ohanyan showcased Parisian designs that were both feminine and structured. The following three looks (shown) can be worn with metallic heels or boots, leather gloves or faux fur short coat. Additional seasonal clothing trends for the year include animal prints, tweed textures, fringe finishing’s, leather silhouettes, polka dots, color blocking, and shoulder pads. All of the runway inspiration featured will surely make a high fashion statement in the office or girls night out!

Love Yourself

To value life is to love the creator; the one who created you. Many times, we live our life without understanding our purpose. We take our daily life for granted as though we are guaranteed to wake up the next day. We go to sleep and expect to wake up the next day. We live today and tomorrow we may not wake up. Taking care of your mental and physical life is important and it is important to maintain good health. 1 out of 33 babies are born with a birth defect and women carrying the in-utero do not understand the well-care is important. There are many reasons as to why your newborn may have a birth defect. It could be because of genetics, lifestyle behaviors, environmental conditions, and how you take care of your health. A healthy body has a better chance of carrying a healthy baby. Curtis McQueen, the founder of Society for Sacred In-utero has a foundation that helps pregnant women maintain good health while carrying a child. It is important that mothers eat healthy and maintain a stressfree life while pregnant. women don’t have to walk too far when parking their cars. The foundation has produced expectant mother parking signs. Nutrition classes and donations of food, and money to the women, are donations the foundation provides to help to maintain healthy a pregnancy. When babies are born, the foundation also gives the mothers a welcome basket with newborn items. McQueen the president of the foundation says, “You have to love yourself in order to love the in-utero. The in-utero needs the mother to eat healthy and not to ingest harmful substances into their bodies. I try to teach nutrition and give positive empowering tools for the women to focus on.” McQueen is grateful that the foundation has people like Henry C. Service and his latest sponsor, attorney Dupree, an attorney that fights for injustice and fair treatment. Their support and sponsorship helps maintain the success for healthy babies. Loving God first insures that you love the person God created; Love yourself OASIS/Montage January • February 2019 33

We live in challenging times, where any one of us can fall on hard times. But if those times arise, Simplistic Restored Living is armed as an excellent resource to help people get their feet planted on solid ground again. We are a progressive 501 (c) (3) nonprofit organization in fulfilling our mission to help families restore their lives through referrals, resources and financial assistance. We can’t do it alone, you play an important role in the success of our organization. Therefore, we are seeking sponsorship for the Gift of Love Stage Play. Simplistic Restored Living is partnering with Oasis Montagé Ministries (Fayetteville, GA) on December 22, 2018 and our goal this year is to provide 50 kids with toys and spread love with our play to families in need this holiday season. We provide an amazing service to the community, but there is still much to be done. We partner with other faith-based and community service organizations that provide resources that include food/furniture/clothing banks and feeding the Homeless.

Harlem Renaissance

By Carolyn Jones

A fundraising event called to honor The Harlem Renaissance was sponsored by The Porter Sanford Performing Arts Center in Decatur, Georgia. This event was to raise funds for the Stem program. Several sponsors along with Porter Sanford Jr. attending the event wearing their favorite mask with attire from of the roaring 20s. The fabulous cajun foods and sounds from the jazz band was topped off with slot machines and gambling crap tables. The Harlem Renaissance is a movement that started around 1920. It is the first African- American generation that was not

born into slavery. Due to the oppression of the south and it’s Jim Crow laws, many of the African-American community had to migrate to major cities in the northern United States. They did this to provide a better way of life for their families. The literary movement started with a dinner to honor a particular writer but ended in the acknowledgment of poets and writers of all ages and genres. The Harlem Renaissance fundraising event was an excellent way for African Americans to pay tribute to their African-American ancestors.
