ho would ever think the most de¬sired city to live in, would encounter injustice in the protection of our public safety. According to a recent statisti¬cal report, Colorful Colorado Springs is the best place to raise a family and retire. Should Colorado Springs, Colorado be the most desired place to live for minorities? Several citizens of Colorado Springs would disagree An organization called, “People For Justice” has been formed due to the unjust treatment of their public safety. The organization was created because of people that have encountered police brutality, police harassment, poor treatment, and poor medical care while incarcerated. Helen Depp, President of the organization , People for Justice says, “Our organization is here to advocate for those that are afraid to stand up for their rights. We are here to help our community get fair treat¬ment when they encounter tough situations with the justice system and public safety. We have a total of 9 members and have collabo¬rated with organization, The New Black Panthers, of Denver. This organization is in the process of training our members for a program called, Cop Watch. Cop Watch surveillances all police calls. When the cop watch team appears on the scene of calls, they video tape the encounters of physical confrontations. Cop Watch has

been successful by winning court cases against police when citizens have been falsely charged, harassed and brutally beaten.” A case that went to federal appellant court, is an estate case called, The Estate of Gregory Herring vs. The Colorado Springs Police Depart¬ment. This case had to be appealed due to the Trujillo law. This law inhibited Gregory Herring’s children from suing the police. The city settled Herrings estate last August, of 2006 for as little as $19,000. Herring’s 3 children did not receive any compensation. Under testimony, an officer admit¬ted to using deadly force in a tactic that killed Herring. Police attempted to apprehend a totally naked man. This was a clear case of police brutality. One family member stated, “My brother was beaten to death while and he was outnumbered by 3 officers. He would be alive today, had they not rushed to judgment. They thought Greg was just a big black man on drugs.” Coroner’s report stated Herring had no drugs or alcohol in his body. Medical reports revealed that Herring was having an emotional breakdown. People for Justice would like the justice system and the citizens of Colorado Springs to know, “We are here to insure people will be treated properly and we will stand by them. PFJ is prepared to picket and rally to assist that like Obama says, it’s time for a change to take place.”

Maxine Waters accused of 3 ethics violations

A House report gives more details of its allegations against the Los Angeles Democrat. Her chief of staff and grandson is accused of being ‘actively involved’ in helping a bank with ties to her husband. As Rep. Maxine Waters was warned against interceding on behalf of a bank with ties to her husband, her chief of staff, who is also her grandson, was “actively involved” in working to help the institution, according to a House Ethics Committee report released Monday that accuses the longtime Los Angeles political figure of three ethics violations. Waters was accused of violating three rules — one that requires its members to “behave at all times in a manner that shall reflect creditably on the House,” a second that prohibits lawmakers from using their influence for personal benefit and a third forbidding the dispensing of favors. — By Richard Simon, Los Angeles Times

he colors red, white and blue not only represent the day of Independence, but it also represents the day that God gave me a love confirmation. On that day, in Chester SC, I was introduced to the man of my dreams, a man that had a glow of love through the fireworks. That was the day my family introduced me to, UJ. He was tall, handsome and brought joy to my life with his smile. After the 4th of July meeting, UJ and I spent countless and endless days and nights together. UJ traveled from Chester, SC to Atlanta and I traveled from Atlanta to Chester, SC. We spent time together at resteraunts, clubs, and long walks and talks about our lives. UJ and I share a love like none other. My love for UJ was a cohesive love that was devoted to a relationship with God. There were many nights I prayed and thanked God for UJ. UJ was like no other man I’d ever met. He shared the same dreams and aspirations of Marriage, a house with a white picket fence and children. UJ and I planned to have a lifetime of love. Our lifetime plans of unity was shattered when I found out I was pregnant. I thought, “How could this happen to me? Why me? I asked God, why would you allow your child, Latonia to fall and fail a lifetime plan? Here was, young, and an educated social worker. My caseload was of pregnancy cases, and I have now become the same case. Did I fail God? Was the love truly in the fireworks, or was this going to be another bad relationship of self doubt?” Latonia came to the realization that God is a forgiving God and He won’t put more on His children than they can bare. UJ & Latonia prayed together for a solution to the pregnancy. Latonia spent many nights praying and crying. Here she is pregnant, 28 years old and soon to be a mother. Latonia understood the pain a child suffers when there is not two parents in the home.

When Latonia shared her personal story of parenting with UJ, they made their future plans of marriage, a reality. They made the decision to get married quick fast and in a hurry. On February 27, 2009, UJ and Latonia went to the Justice of Peace and got married. Latonia and UJ had a beautiful baby boy, Elijah. The two of them shared the ups and downs of living a life together as newlyweds and being new parents. Through the trials and tribulations of the newness, the two shared and everlasting and inseperable love. They continued to plan for a their traditional church wedding. The glorious wedding day of August 21, 2010 will be witnessed by a lifetime of friends and family. Although this is a ceremony of vowel renewal, they have chosen to let the whole world know that their love worked through the ďŹ re. The 4th of July was not only a celebration of Independence, it was a day of Love through the ďŹ re that has eternal life of His good works.

omen love a man that is loving, kindhearted, giving, caring, and that looks as good as he and smells. Oh did I mention looks good and gorgeous too. Most women call him drop dead gorgeous, and some just say he is so fine. I interviewed a couple of women and this is what they had to say about Shemar, Carla, a customer at a beauty shop in Colorado Springs said, “Ooh honey, I love the calendar photos of Shemar. That man has got a body I would love to just ….. Inger Guinn of Louisville Kentucky says, “That brother is so fine, he blows my mind. Shemar in my opinion is captivating, attractive, humble, kind¬hearted and very honorable. Shemar went from modeling in GQ Magazine to the center-fold of calendars. Shemar is not only the most desired actor in Hollywood but he is also the heart throb of most women. In my interview with Shemar, he was found to be very honest, sincere and grateful for the fans love.. Shemar has a very interesting background, he was born in Oakland, California on April 20, 1970. He spent the first two years of his life in Denmark where he became fluent in Danish. After his parents divorced, Shemar traveled with his mother, to various

countries including Bahrain, England, and Greece & Africa. On a baseball scholarship, Shemar later attended Santa Clara University. Shemar began modeling as a survival and when a shoulder injury ended his baseball career, Shemar decided to move to New York City, where he enjoyed the success of print and runway fashion modeling. Shemar was spotted by an agent who recommended him for role of ‘Malcolm Winters’ on the soap opera, The Young and the Restless. Shemar played the character, Malcom for several seasons. As a result of his role as Malcom, Shemar won 6 NAACP Image Awards. One of his featured films, an all time woman favorite, was the movie, The Brothers. If Shemar was in it, most women wanted to see it. Currently, Shemar portrays Special Agent Derek Morgan in the CBS drama, Criminal Minds. Is Shemar single? In the past he has dated several celebrities. After being featured in Toni Braxton’s video, “How Many Ways,” He was romantically involved with Toni Braxton. He later dated Academy Award winner Halle Berry. Shemar didn’t find the wife of his dreams then, and today he is still single. Shemar Moore is a fine hunk of a man to many, but to others, Shemar is a drop dead gorgeous man.

the kissingame Text by Carolyn Moore - Photo by Shannon Bayless

H

ow can I have the kissing disease when I have never been kissed romantically – EVER? This had to be a mistake, misdiagnosis or a mere misunderstanding- OR there are variant ways of contracting this virus. Being that I have never been kissed, I needed to dispel the “kissing disease” myth. The official name for the “kissing disease” is mononucleosis. It has been dubbed many different names – “mono”, Pfeiffer’s disease, and glandular fever. Mono, as we will refer to it, is an infection that can be caused by two different viruses: Epstein-Burr virus (EBV) and cytomegalovirus (CMV). Both are the members of the herpes family. Does this mean I have Herpes? Not exactly! Not the herpes you’re thinking of. One of the most common viruses in humans is the Human herpes virus 4 (HHV-4). This virus is responsible for cold sores and chickenpox. Let’s start from the beginning. In 1961, M. A. Epstein, Y.M. Barr and G.G. Achong was researching an unknown virus that was possibly causing cancer in African children. The discovered the virus infects only two major cell types: the outer cells (epithelial) of the salivary gland and white blood cells (B-cells). The infection initially develops in the salivary gland. Once the infection moves to the B-cells it proliferates (spreads at a rapid rate). In 1964, they made a miraculous discovery naming the unknown virus. Epstein and Barr were given the privilege of this pathogen being named after them. Cytomegalo virus is a mirror of Epstein-Barr virus. The major difference in the two is a sore throat. With CMV, a person is less likely to develop a sore throat. Otherwise the symptoms are similar: fever, fatigue, loss of appetite, soreness and swollen lymph glands in the neck (mainly), armpits and groin. Other rare symptoms include: swollen liver or spleen. When a person is diagnosed with “mono”, it is recommended, he do light to no exercising and

totally avoid any contact sports for at least two months. It is extremely easy to rupture the spleen during this period. The spleen is “sort of” like a large gland that helps filter the blood. As with many other health issues, there are symptoms: pain under the left part of your chest, feeling lightheaded, having trouble breathing, bleeding easier than usual and heart beating faster/harder for no apparent reason. This virus can camouflage itself as insect bites, stings, and other viruses including the common cold or flu. Once a person is infected with Epstein-Barr virus or cytomegala virus, in which approximately 85% of the U.S. population has been infected, the virus will remain dormant in the body for life. The person may never become ill, but the virus is still there. GET THIS! Even though the infected person has never been ill, he can cough or sneeze and infect someone else. How Bizarre? One of the main transporters of these viruses are saliva between individuals. Drinking from the same glass or straw, eating from the same utensils and of course… KISSING! This is how mononucleosis (mono) earned the myth of the “kissing disease”. Are there any cures or vaccines available for “mono”? Cure – NO! Vaccines–There are no vaccines to this date, but one is currently being developed in an Australian laboratory. This vaccine hopes to “limit the danger posed by this sometimes deadly virus”. (www.science.org.au/nova) The best treatments prescribed by physicians are: REST, drink plenty of fluids, REST, gargle with salt water or suck throat lozenges (if sore throat persists), REST, and Tylenol™ or Motrin™ for the fever and pain… Oh, did I mention – REST. Mono is a viral infection. Antibiotics don’t work on viral infections, it’s just an infection that must run it’s course. So to dispel the “kissing disease” myth, you don’t have to “kiss” to contract the virus. Being too close for comfort can easily do the trick.

I HAVE BEEN

DIAGNOSED WITH THE

“KISSING DISEASE”… AND I HAVE NEVER BEEN KISSED!

He firmly believes God should be first in all things in his life. One of his favorite mottos is found in Philippians 4:13, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” Marvin has a vision, he says he can see it perfectly in his head, he is just standing still, waiting and it’s on Gods time not his. The vision is to own a cattle ranch. The ranch would be started with all black and red Angus on 15 acres of land. He has been studying the ins and outs of this for four years. This vision came from a promise he made to his grandmother just before her passing. Marvin’s grandmother made him promise to teach his kids the value and respect of his hard labor. He promised to explain his vision to his kids and instill the importance of keeping family visions alive. Marvin stated, “My generation is so quick to sell the items they inherit to receive the money. They do not understand or appreciate the tears; sweat and heart that went into making the vision come true.” People are so quick to forget that faith is what fuels our dreams; Marvin says, “he is living his dream, and he is thankful, so thankful.”

LovingDifferent Text by Angela Mbodj

H

aving a romantic relationship with someone who is from a different country and has a different culture generates some very unique challenges and situations. Barriers can be as basic as the two of you not speaking the same language, to variances in religious beliefs, styles of communication and gender roles and expectations. When contemplating the decision to move from dating a foreigner, to marrying one, the stakes get even higher. This is particularly true because marriage, by its very meaning, implicates the union of two or more. In your case, however, it would likely mean two or more families, religions, and childhood socialization processes. All the love in the world will not protect your relationship if you have not mentally prepared for the potential hazards and roadblocks that could lie ahead: conversely, if you are realistic, open and honest with each other about your beliefs and differences, all you will need is patience and love! Here’s a blueprint that can help you maintain romantic harmony: A. Be Transparent – Discuss cultural, religious and language disparities from the beginning, and throughout the relationship. This will help to avoid misunderstandings and hurt feelings. No matter how compatible you are, foreign cultures have foreign rules and social standards. Understanding them is key. B. Do your homework - Vacation or virtually visit (via the web) your mate’s home country. This includes learning family structures and basic language, such as greetings. Learn holidays, and the associated customs, social rituals, etc. This will make you both more at ease with each other, and help to alleviate the inevitable cultural gaps. It will also validate that you are interested in learning those things which your partner holds dear. C. Do what’s best for the child – If there are children involved in the union, determining which religion they follow will likely be one of the toughest decisions that you will have to make together. Believe it or not, most times religion even trumps race, as it relates to personal allegiance. Here is a case where you’ll definitely have to discus and come to an agreement before hand.

Also, when the child is old enough, they should perhaps be given an option to choose. D. Consider the Future – As we grow older, aging parents, the desire to return to the comfort and familiarity of what we know best, and retirement tend to cause people to want to “go home”. That may mean your mate will too. Perhaps they will want to take you with them. What will that mean for your relationship? Whose homeland will take precedence over the other? Why? How will you prepare should a huge domestic relocation have to occur? I have been married almost four years to a Senegalese man, who I dated almost 10 years prior to our wedding. There have been the ups and downs that transpire in any relationship; as well as different ones – even to this day. I would have to admit that the bulk of them involve language and its many nuances. Sometimes we simply conceptually, as opposed to phonetically misunderstand each other. He eats lamb; and I eat seafood. He says “Bismillah”, I say “Our Father”, He fast for Ramadan; and I give up things for lent. We have so many uncommon grounds; but so much more in sync and common – most of all our love and commitment to giving equal respect and tolerance to each other’s feelings and beliefs when navigating through our very “different” love.

28 OASIS/Montage Sept-Dec 2010

“Why are you single?” is a question that I receive fairly often from a variety of people in all walks of my life. Being a single mother for the last eight years, has been a journey full of joyous moments as well as moments that moved me to tears. At times, I have loathed being single because it can often be a lonely experience, however I have never been ashamed of being single. The status “single” has never defined me, for I refuse to wear it as a badge of shame or one of honor. With time I have realized that words such as mother, professional, mentor, sister and friend describe me far more than the label single. I have a multitude of other blessings such as the love given to me by my awesome son, parents, family and friends. Over time I have focused on this love and adoration instead of the love that I’m not receiving from my future soul mate.

Remember, some men are placed in your life for a season, so don’t try to extend their stay with excuses.

I don’t know it all when it comes to dating but I have learned to not do the following along the way: 1. Don’t make your kids date!!!! I don’t subject my son to the men I date. I’m not interested in him taking us to the zoo, movies or the circus. Children have feelings too, therefore we should not risk them becoming attached to the various men we date. There is no point in introducing your child to a man if you are not in serious committed relationship. This type of behavior will have damaging results along the way. If a woman exposes a child to multiple men along her path to finding Mr. Right then she can’t expect the child to take Mr. Right seriously when he comes along. 2. If you don’t like being alone with you then why would any man want to???? Don’t miss out on things you like to do because you don’t have a man along for the ride. I often go to the movies, dinner, happy hour and on trips by myself. Until recently, I assumed that most single women were also comfortable with doing these things solo. When you are single, use this time as an opportunity to get know you better. If you know who you are, it’s not as easy to lose yourself in a relationship and subsequently regret your mate for the loss. A man appreciates and more importantly respects a woman who is completely comfortable in her own skin. 3. Don’t take no wooden nickels! My mother has been whispering this mantra in my ear for years now. Even at times when I couldn’t immediately see the relevance she would end a phone call saying, “remember don’t take no wooden nickels.” The saying may be laced with poor grammar but it is loaded with proper form. You can’t allow someone to fill your head with false notions about who they are and what they can contribute to your life. A wooden nickel may look like a real nickel but you can’t spend it the same way, so don’t even try.

4. It’s not what it might be…it is what it is! Don’t try to turn a man into your ideal mate. We have all met men, who upon first glance, appear to be our perfect match but it is vital to give his idealness further examination. Never get too caught up in what he might be down the road, especially since you already know who you are. If what he currently is, doesn’t coincide with your future happiness then don’t force the issue. The only person in life who we control is ourselves. You can’t force someone to be anything other than what they currently are. Remember, some men are placed in your life for a season, so don’t try to extend their stay with excuses. 5. Never stop believing in love! We all know that the divorce rate is ridiculously high. We have experienced our own horrible relationships and witnessed the heartbreak of friends. Tumultuous relationships are a fact of life but that should not force us to conclude that real love does not exist. Many people are not willing to admit it but their failed relationships are built upon faulty foundations. These foundations didn’t suddenly sag; they were always laced with cracks that were simply ignored. If you stop believing in love then stop seeking relationships. Never fall into the trap of being in a relationship based upon money, appearance or status because relationships rooted in such shallow waters will drown. Yes, I have been single for quite awhile but despite this I am happy and whole. I have a bright, loving and inquisitive son who depends upon me to be a strong woman. I have a college degree and a successful career that takes care of my material needs. I have a wonderful circle of honest sister friends who help me stay true to who I am throughout my journey. I have a wonder biological and church family who fully support my professional and personal endeavors. Ultimately, I will have a loving husband to add to the list of blessings but until then I am proud to be single. I thank God for being single and the opportunity to love and know myself enough that when Mr. Right comes along, I will recognize and embrace his true love.

PHENOMENAL Jessy Earl Jones Jr. Text by Carolyn Moore

W

hen I think of the word phenomenal, I think of Jessy Earl Jones Jr. I watched this man’s face glow with excitement as he talked about his aspirations and goals. His historical football career is more than phenomenal, it is wonderful to have so many achievements. Jessy is not a beginner in the football industry, for many, he’s a historical icon. When you think of synonymous, you think of the man that was born in Los Angeles, California, on May 16, 1973. You think of Jessy Earl Jones Jr. Jessy’s parents, Florida and Phil Holbert are very proud of their son and his family devotion family. Jessy has been married for 13 years to his highschool sweetheart, Nicole. They have 3 children: Sachia and Jayana, and a son, Jamel. Jessy has a lifetime of accomplishments. For many in sports, very few have done what Jessy has done. Jessy has played: 1998 PIFL, 1999 IPFL, 2000 SFL, 2001 AF2, and 2002 AFL. Jessy retired after a 2002 leg injury. “Jessy Jones retire, no way. He might be down for a minute, but we know he’ll be back,” says his coach. Jessy’s leg injury hindered his dream to play NFL

football. His determination to heal, has brought him back to the NIFL, “one more time.” In 2007, coaches called Jessy and asked him to come back to NIFL and play for local season games. Jessy accepted the offer to play for the Pueblo Pistols. To be a part of this team, Jessy had to bench press 225lbs, and weigh under 230lbs. Jessy met the lifting requirements, but put himself on a regimen to lose 20lbs. As part of his training to lose the weight, Jessy started a vigorous running program and increased his weight lifting. I personally experienced a workout with Jessy for 3 weeks. He makes you truly work that body. “I’m going to give you what you want and give you what you need, a true workout that will make you look and feel good about yourself. You may hate me at first, but in the end, you will love the results,” says Jessy. That was a true statement. I went to Jessy wearing a size 13, and I dropped to an 11. He has give me the drive and ambition to stay healthy and conscious of what I eat. Jessy has many people he personally trained. For the locals of Colorado Springs, Jessy has a proven track record of being a business and family man with a heart of gold. He loves to train kids that need self-esteem drive and ambition. He is loved by the Colorado Springs School in the Broad-

moor for creating an outstanding sports camp. “Jessy is a great trainer if it weren’t for Jessy, I wouldn’t look or feel as good as I do. Not only is my family noticing my physique, but the girls are hollering at me. My highschool coaches don‘t notice me, and they don‘t play me in Football or track. Until my mom found Jessy, I wanted to give up, says Marquis Moore of Fountain Fort Carson Highschool.” To the women of the world, Jessy has always looked good, but to the men in sports, they know competition is on it’s way. The pistols had their first game this month, and Jessy was the only touchdown for the team. I visited Jessy during a practice with the team. He was one of the hardest working team members I saw. An over achiever is what I would call him. He was very appreciated and respected by his teammates. Jessy looks forward to giving his mental, physical, and spiritual walk of discipline and dedication to those that have a vision of unlocking the barrier of fear. “My next leap of faith is to not only take my health and fitness for training technique to television, but to also be an NFL coach as well,” says Jessy. If you’ve ever wanted to be as healthy and as phenomenal as Jessy, join his personal training program, Phenom 1. 719-332-4771.
