Summer is here :) And what does that mean? More time to commit to Key Club events and activities!

Thank you to all those who signed up for the summer emailing list and I encourage you to keep signing up through google form if you have not already. Summer is the best time to get some hours, hangout with your fellow Key Clubbers, form lasting bonds, and serve your community more closely.

DCM: Lynne Ta | 11 | Project Chair

Division Coun cil Meeting

DCMs! They may seem scary at first with a large amount of people attending from various schools, however they are a great way to meet new friends and make memories. DCM stands for Division Council Meeting and it is when schools from across the Division come together to report on club activities for the month. Within Division 30 South, there are a lot of schools including Oxford, Cypress, Kennedy, Anaheim, Savanna, Katella, Loara, Whitney, Servite, and Fairmont.

At every DCM there is always a service project or projects, an ice breaker to help get everyone acquainted, and fundraisers. These fundraisers can range from lemonade to donuts to help clubs raise money for PTP otherwise known as the Pediatric Trauma Program. To everyone who signed up for summer key club, I highly encourage you attend a DCM because I managed to make so many new friends and bonds through attending.

Victoria Tran | 11 | Secretary This month, we held our Division Council Meeting at Twila Reid Park, and this DCM was not like any other for me. Since our president and vice presidents were unable to be present, as secretary, I had to step up and fulfill the duties for executive board. Oxford Academy also held their first fundraiser of the term by selling homemade lemonade and cookies! I helped our treasurer, Megan Tran, run our stand and it was thrilling. At first, we sold our lemonade for two dollars a cup but once we saw Cypress High School, our competitors, sell their lemonade for cheaper, we lowered our selling price. I bought cookies for the entire OAKC board, and I was also able to sell to one of my old friends who used to attend Oxford. Throughout the entire DCM, we talked to new key club members and officers as they bought from us.

Oxford Academy won second shining club of the month and the officer of the month was Ryan Dang, our own service project coordinator. As a secretary, I felt very proud of our club for accomplishing so much during the first month of the term. With every new event and DCM, I am given the opportunity to get closer to the officers I work with and meet new ones in our division.

As the second month of the term approaches, I am excited to attend more events and meet new people. I can feel myself stepping out of my comfort zone more this summer and I look forward to what our division will accomplish!

May DCM:

Service In Summer

Brandon Duong | 12 | Historian Conditions change from event to event, minute to minute, especially with outdoor activities.

Not only do the weather and lighting change as the event evolves, but also the energy and atmosphere as a whole, and as a historian, our main job is to adapt to these changes and take pictures to capture the energy of the event and tell a story through snippets of time. Documenting DCMs through taking pictures is both a challenging and rewarding experience.

The monthly Division Council Meetings are both service events, but also socials, which need to be highlighted through the pictures we create as historians. Usually the service projects don’t start right away, so the first part of the event can be focused on the social aspects of the event and capturing moments of people enjoying the event and talking to each other. In these pictures, the main focus is not the event itself, but the people at the event and their unique energy that they contribute to the overall atmosphere. These can be more creative in nature, but with the actual DCM portion of the event, the images should be more clean and standard as they are strictly to document and be used as reference for the future. The DCM portion of the event is mainly to highlight clubs who are doing an exceptional job and also updates about the division as a whole, in which the main focus will be the “stage” and some reactions of members. Once the DCM section of the event has concluded, normally this is where the bulk of the service event will take place, where the main focus will be the items people are creating, such as cards or decorations. These will mostly be detail shots of people writing and finished projects, as well as anything else occuring at the event. These different dynamics are all aspects of the DCM that need to be captured and documented for the future, as well as getting them sent out to the members in a timely manner can also be a challenge itself with busy schedules.

Although there are many parts to capturing any event, DCMs especially, the experience can be very rewarding. Much of the work for everyone is over once the event concludes, yet for historians this is where the bulk of our work starts. Once the moments have been captured throughout the event, now comes the time to sort through them and pick out the top standout moments, which ideally are posted sometimes during the event and usually as soon as possible. Once those are sent out, the time comes to pick out the best overall moments and those that contribute to the overall atmosphere of the event, as well as using color and contrast to convey the mood and atmosphere of the event through the images for those who weren’t able to be at the event. This process takes a while, but elevates the quality of the pictures and the perception of the division as a whole.

The work of a historian is constantly changing and evolving, with each event being better than the last, the standard of pictures also gets higher. Each event is an opportunity to learn and grow to be even better than the last time. Taking pictures at DCM is a challenge, but one that helps you grow and capture memories people will look back on for years to come.

May DCM:

Service In Summer

Megan Tran | 11 | Treasurer At May DCM, I decided to sell lemonade. However, I did not settle for buying gallons of lemonade at Costco. The solution was right under my nose. The lemons from my backyard would be perfect for this fundraiser. Friday night before DCM, it was time to get to work. After a long week of finals, the perfect way to end it off was on my kitchen floor, cutting and squeezing over 100 lemons.

This experience was definitely a learning curve for me, as it was the first time I have ever made that much lemonade in one sitting. I underestimated the amount of time and effort it goes into squeezing that many lemons. Lemon after lemon, I was starting to get carpal tunnel. The only thing I could smell was lemons and by the end of my squeezing, I don’t think I would want to look at another lemon ever again. Jokes aside, it was a funny and stress-relieving experience to end off a stressful week of finals.

In the end, I would say the lemonade was a success and for my first fundraiser, it was another big success. Although I did not sell out of the lemonade, I was left with some delicious lemonade to drink for the next week. I got to raise lots of PTP money and also personally enjoy lots of lemonade, so it was a win-win situation for me! First fundraiser of the term was a delightful experience and I can’t wait to hold many more in the future.

May DCM:

Service In Summer

Janice Lee | 10 | Historian This past week, I had the opportunity to attend a DCM for the first time. As a new Key Club General Member and Board Member, the experience was quite new at first. But as I experienced more and more of the activities, I was able to realize why I joined the community in the first place. Through fun bonding activities such as “Elevator Pitches” and fundraisers hosted by various schools, the sense of community was definitely strong within the meeting. But the most important takeaway from the moment was why I joined Key Club in the first place. Seeing such a kind and positive group of people made me grateful to be part of Key Club, and made me want to work harder to support newcomers like myself in the years to come. Through it all, it helped me realize how impactful Key Club truly was. Ultimately, May DCM was definitely a fun and thought-provoking experience, and I’m excited to see what the next coming months have in store.

and OC Marathon Ryan Dang | 11 | Project Chair I wake up at 4:30, 15 minutes before my alarm and stare out the window. It’s pitch black outside and I’m surprisingly not tired at all. I shower, get dressed, and make sure I have all my papers, then I’m off. OC Marathon was an event for people of all ages, and I helped out with the Kids Run the OC. It was a very fun experience, watching children of all ages run faster than most of us do now, and it was very heartwarming to see parents run alongside their kids. Even those with disabilities still went out there and made the run, even if they had to use a stretcher to walk!

Along with the great experience the event provided, I was able to meet many other like-minded students my age. I volunteered to help at the start line, where I would hold the pennant and cheer for the kids. I was helped by my new friend Nguyen, who was a freshman at La Quinta KIWIN’S, and a fellow key clubber from Cypress named Phoenix. They really made the event for me, and it just goes to show how inclusive and friendly the Kiwanis family really is.

After the OC Marathon, was DCM, where DLT would be announced. I would be a liar if I said I wasn’t nervous, because I really wanted to skip it in case I was not accepted. Fortunately for me, I was lucky enough to be selected for Service Projects, and it fulfilled a goal I set when I went to my first DCM at the same park 8 months ago. With this month being my first as a DLT Officer, I will stay true to my commitment to service, and do my best to serve my community and its people. I hope to see you all at Division and OAKC events, and eventually become friends with everyone.

Summer Service Devanshi Kothari | 12 | President This past month, all our board members visited the clusters or homerooms of the 8th graders at our school and gave presentations on Key Club! Our aim was to encourage these 8th graders to sign up for Key Club over the summer and come out to more events as incoming freshmen.

I went to one classroom with one of our project chairs, Ryan Dang. We were able to give our presentation after a few technology issues and it was exciting to see so many students avidly listen to us. They were excited and enthusiastic to join our club as well as after seeing the lasting bonds we had created and the benefits we offered.

Getting involved in summer with Key Club is one of the things that I regret not doing my freshman year, so I encourage all of you to join and to participate as much as possible! Make use of the extra free time you have during the summer to commit to Key Club and attend some activities.

Kenneth Nguyen | 12 | Vice President It’s the end of June or beginning of July by the time you are reading this article, so I hope you have been volunteering at our volunteering events. While OAKC functions as an Oxford Academy Club during the school year ranging from September at Club Rush until the end of the school year with only dues-paid members being able to volunteer, OAKC serves as solely a club of Division 30 South during the summer in which ANYONE that is an incoming 8th grader to 12th grade ris welcome to volunteer and participate in our events, projects, and activities, even if you weren’t a dues paid member previously. Key Club in the summer serves as an opportunity to gain service hours. With the in-person setting being fully implemented last year, Anaheim Union High School Distract reestablished the community service hours requirement for 9th to 12th graders, with the past year’s juniors (CO 2023) having to fulfill 20 hours by their graduation, past year’s sophomores (CO 2024) having to fulfill 30 community service hours by graduation, and the past year’s freshmen and so forth (CO 2025 and after) having to fulfill the original 40 hours of community service. Key Club is the biggest club on campus and is also a community service organization, so you won’t regret volunteering with Oxford Academy Key Club NOW, as well as through the year as a dues-paid member. Events that happen often include Hope Food Distribution and Brookhurst Food Pantry, which are events that happen every other week, on alternating weekends, so you could volunteer for both events by signing up for them every week!!! Although they are food distributions that have been occurring since myself and Victoria Tran, the IP Project Chairs from last term, implemented them into our weekly events, it is an amazing opportunity to help out the community, it’s a fun experience, I guaranteed, I’ve been to both of them numerous times :)). Hopefully, for this term, more events open up outside of food distribution as events begin to start up without the fear of the COVID-19 infection.

Summer Service Rachel Kim | 11 | Publicist It’s honestly now hitting me that our past Key Club term has ended (for quite a few months actually) and the 2021-2022 school year has concluded. The final events of the term, including officer elections, board applications, and banquet, have whizzed by and signaled the end of the past OAKC term. Then, after cramming and stressing out for APs and finals, I now realize that school ended and I will soon become a junior.

Although very belated, I am beginning to reflect on the past school year and all the people around me. Many of them I was only able to meet for a year and they have now left. It has left me slightly regretful as it only reminds me of how reserved I was and how fast time goes by. I have been burned out at times, but I am slowly finding the fun in attending Key Club events as I am with my friends and fellow peers.

With the new board, new DLT, new District representatives, and more, I think we are all looking forward to a better term and year in general. As Oxford Academy Key Club launched summer sign-ups, our senior members have gone and now new freshmen members are beginning their Key Club journeys. I hope to meet more people and enjoy another year of Key Club! With the start of summer, I am excited for new events and service projects to participate in over my break, including my motivation to exercise: Charity Miles!

Helen Tran | 11 | Vice President School’s out! After a gruesome month of finals and AP testing, we did it. We got through it. Now, it’s officially summer, and it is all of our times to shine! From incoming freshmen finally able to join to seniors who are grinding for service hours, Key Club is the best organization to take part in over the summer. There are countless service events and people in need of help, and when other time to do it than now? Key Club is pretty big during club rush, but most people are missing out on the true prime time; summer. I mean, you finally have time to go to these events, and don’t have to worry about finishing up the rest of your homework for the weekend after your shift. Fun fact: a very cool guy named Adrian Lau volunteered for over 100 hours in just last summer alone! In just one week, you might be able to volunteer every single day. Or maybe you sign up for back to back shifts in order to get like 8 hours from just one event? There are countless possibilities, but it is truly is astonishing what one can accomplish in just one summer, and the beautiful memories that you make there at them simultaneously make the season one of the best— I know that Key Club was what brought me out of the house last year, and those times where I got to volunteer really made my summer. Truly, I encourage you to join Key Club early during the summer, and to continue coming out to events!

Garden Grove

Strawberry Festival Katelyn Ngo | 11 | Publicist The 62nd Annual Strawberry Festival in Garden Grove took place from May 27th to May 30th this year. Following the cancellation of previous festivals due to COVID, everyone was looking forward to this year's, and we were not disappointed. Everything surpassed our expectations. There were so many fun and intriguing activities to do during this all-day event. You'll never get bored here. It's one of California's biggest and best local events! Volunteers had a great time assisting people with general information and directions, and they had a great time as well!

The Garden Grove Strawberry Festival provided free strawberry shortcake to the community at its grand opening ceremony, which is normally held on a Friday evening. French's Pastry Bakery in Costa Mesa produced the massive cake. Some of the Saturday parade's celebs couldn't resist trying a piece of cake and handed it out to the audience.

The Strawberry Festival is known for its rides and attractions, which cater to adults and children of all ages. The Merry Go Round, Ferris Wheel, State Fair Slide, and many other rides are among them. We must not overlook the younger children! Looney Tooter Train, Wacky Tracks Funhouse, and Frog Hopper are just a few of the rides available for small children.

They had a parade with floats, boats, and various characters on Saturday! Local high school bands were generously funded by the festival board so that they could participate in the celebration. Many people gathered to see the parade and cheer on Miss Garden Grove and her entourage as their floats passed past.

There were numerous booths, many of which featured food and activities. Delicate funnel cakes with glazed strawberries, powdered sugar, whipped cream, or cinnamon toppings were offered by the Greater Garden Grove Kiwanis Club. Strawberry smoothies and caramelized strawberries over cheesecake or crepes were being sold by the Garden Grove High School Band Booster Clubs. Corn on the cob, baked potatoes, hamburgers, hot dogs, quesadillas, and meatball sandwiches were among the other festival dishes.

Strawberry Festival Yuehanna Yuan | 10 | Historian The first ever Garden Grove Strawberry Festival started in 1958, and it had been thriving ever since. The festival is held by a charitable organization and has donated over 4.5 million dollars in the past 50 years of its history. As a way to help, service groups are the only ones allowed to sell items at the festival. The board also gives out scholarship opportunities for local schools and has helped numerous non-profit organizations in the past.

The‌‌62nd‌‌Garden‌‌Grove‌‌Strawberry‌‌Festival‌‌took place over the past ‌Memorial‌‌Day‌‌weekend.

Oxford Academy volunteers helped direct visitors in information booths. I attended the May 29th one and to be honest, it was the best volunteer experience I have had so far! ‌As soon as I arrived at the festival, I toured it to familiarize myself with everything so that I could give directions to others. ‌There‌‌were‌‌many booths, and people were selling all kinds of stuff: clothing, food, jewelry, toys...and strawberries, of course! There were also various carnival games. After getting to know the place, I went back to the information booth and started waiting for questions. I also brought back a lemonade that I bought (it didn’t taste all that good, and it was EIGHT DOLLARS, but I was buying the experience anyway). I also bought a burger, which turned out to be the best burger I have ever had in my life. At the booth, I also passed out information papers and coloring sheets to children. I loved the look on the children’s faces after they took some coloring sheets! The tour around the festival really helped me answer questions. I realized that the most asked question is “Where is the nearest restroom”, and I was glad that I knew the answer to that. I didn’t think I could actually “enjoy the fair” like the weekly events email stated, but I actually did this time! If I have time next year, I would definitely volunteer again!

Brookhurst Bryan Phan | 11 | Tech Chair

Pantry

This month of Key Club has been a blast for me. Already continuing my Key Club journey, I was able to chair my very first volunteer event during the Brookhurst Pantry. During this volunteer event, we setup food products on the table then proceeded to all get our own shopping carts. I think during this event, I got the most cardio I’ve ever done throughout the school year. I went around packing several bags of groceries as packers lifted the heavy groceries into the cars of people in need. This event was super food with all the new people I got to meet and talk to. It was also an opportunity for me to hang out with my friends without spending money. We got to mess around a bit with the shopping carts which made it even more fun. They were nice enough to give us a 10-minute break after all the long walks of packing groceries and packing bags of food. At this volunteer event, everyone was smiling from the good work they were doing and the gifts they got. There was also spare food at the end and some of us volunteers got to bring back groceries ourselves. Key club has been a really fun club so far and I can’t wait to go on my next shopping spree again.

Kaylin Chan | 11 | Bulletin Editor Two years ago, I remember my very first event being Grandma’s Hope Food Distribution. I remember that event was an eye-opening experience and incredibly interesting! Unfortunately, that event never showed up again after that month, so I tried another, similar event: Brookhurst Pantry. The concept was similar, and perhaps that was the reason I loved this event so much. I went back several times, trying to do this as much as I could. Sadly, my weekends were soon filled up with other events from school or from my personal life, and I stopped attending events for a period of time.

Our secretaries have always been extremely reliable and always on point! Earlier this month, as usual, our secretary sent out an email with all the information about events this coming month. I scrolled through, and once more, the Brookhurst Pantry service event was still there. It had been there, consistently, for the whole year now, starting from the last term to this new term.

Change is something that most people dislike, naturally. It’s something that is constant and something that we need to learn to adapt to, such as a pandemic and quarantine. However, if I think about it, Brookhurst Pantry has always been there, consistent and never changing. If all the events we have are a one time event or a tri-monthly thing, I know that Brookhurst Pantry will always be there for the weekends, even when the number of volunteers actually attending the event begins dwindling even more.

The fact that this event has remained so long made me realize the appreciation I have for consistency and has made me realize the importance of consistency. In Key Club, duties must be carried out consistently well and punctually. In school, homework, assignments, and attendance are all appreciated tremendously – which may be why we get Perfect Attendance awards at Oxford. Even though it is such a minor thing, one’s consistency is truly something to be appreciated. I am so grateful for the constant support my parents and friends give me, for the constant encouragement and community this club provides, and of course, for the consistency of Brookhurst Pantry being a service event for our members.

I know our club and Key Club, as a whole, will continue to have a consistently shining future, so I will also do my best to contribute my own consistency so one day a freshman can come into this club and experience the joys and wonders this organization has to offer!

Key Moments

Starting out in Key Club, there’s always that lingering thought of, “Why am I here? What’s the point of this?” The first couple Key Club events that most members go to are because their friends encouraged them to come out, but there’s a switch that happens when the events become just another event, to a fun and interactive atmosphere. The common term among Key Clubbers for this switch is the Key Club Moment, that moment when key club goes from just another club, to the club that you’re invested in. Like most people, my own key club moment was at Fally Rally South 2021.

Before this event, I wasn’t too involved in the organization as a whole and only had attended a few service events before in my previous two years. Through these few events however, I was able to make more connections with those within my home club and also those throughout the division. In all honesty, I wasn’t even planning on attending Fall Rally South, but the night before at 7pm, one of my friends texted me saying that their school had an opening and that if I wanted to I could still attend Fall Rally, despite the deadline for sales being long gone. I saw this as a sign and jumped at the opportunity.

Surrounded by the vibrant colors of the rainbow region, Fall Rally was an experience in what it truly meant to be a key club member. Although service and volunteering are a large part of the organization as a whole, the people who kept it going and the connections between them are what make Key Club different from any of the other clubs around school. The connections between members, not only within their home school, but also those of their division, and now the friendships being made between the members of different divisions bridged the gap between everyone and made one unified key club family. It wasn’t really any single moment or memory from Fall Rally that made me stay with the club as a whole, but it was all the small interactions and connections beforehand that all culminated in this one event that is what got me to stick with the club and ultimately seek to make a positive impact in the organization in the ways I could.

Kaylin Chan | 11 | Bulletin Editor Perhaps it was almost two weeks ago that our historians sent out the reminder to publicize our Stamp Out Hunger service event on May 14th. I remember seeing the digital flyer and thinking this would be a great event, so I signed up. Unfortunately, due to some technological errors with google sheets, I wasn’t able to sign up on the OAKC spreadsheet for the event, but successfully signed up on the organizer’s website. Comically enough, I didn’t realize this fact until the day before the event when I went to check who else was going.

Luckily, I was still able to attend the event, and I was grateful I did. It turned out that my parents had donated food to this event, and they mentioned it in the passing of the night. I was really excited, because I didn’t realize that even my parents knew about the event! They heard it from a different source than Key Club, but the fact that all of us participated in the same event in different ways made me realize that what we do in Key Club truly connects to those around us. We aren’t the only ones helping out our community, we aren’t the only service organization out there, and we most definitely aren’t the only ones with service events. This small conversation really woke me up and the realization that what we do really affects people hit me.

Maybe because I could never actually see the results of our service or volunteering at most of the events, I always, subconsciously, didn’t connect our actions with real world events. I never realized that what we did actually had an impact on others. Key Club is not alone in volunteering, but we truly are an amazing community. Key Club is a way for students who might not have the ability or opportunity to go out there and save the world, to contribute to their community and give back to the world.

Even now, after I sorted all my thoughts out, I still find it incredible that we can have such a powerful ability and not really think twice about it: we have the incredible ability to serve and make a difference in the world.
