Sun-Spotlight Sun-Spotlight Advice for us? -wHi Suns! My name is Kenneth Nguyen and I'll be one of OAKC's Vice Presidents for the 22-23 term! I'll be a senior which means it'll be my last year in Key Club :(( so I'm gonna try to make it the best year possible! please don't be shy to say hi to me and we could become friends :))

It doesn't hurt to try. Take risks and go outside your comfort zone because it could possibly change your life or help you. Run for that position, become friends with that stranger, sign up for that Key Club event :), ask your teachers on questions you have.

Going outside what you are comfortable will get you used to taking the initiative and being confident in your actions.

Who are you?

Fav thing abt OAKC? I really love all the events that I can take part in, especially Fall Rally and Rose Float Decorating, and I love being able to get my mind off of school and any sort of stress by focusing on serving my community at various volunteering events. Key Club is a great way to learn new skills and create lasting memories!

Japan Taste of

Kenneth Nguyen | 12 | Vice President Oxford Academy Key Club volunteered at The Taste of Japan on Friday, June 17, an annual two day Japanese festival held at STC Anaheim Gardenwalk. With hundreds of people gathered at this one festival, the outdoor shopping center was packed with crowds as traffic built up with cars trying to drop off their passengers or find a parking space. Finally navigating my way to find some friends and to the fair information booth, myself and another volunteer were assigned to a booth selling Japanese snacks for the majority of the shift. We were in charge of describing the different snacks and items they could buy and its prices, as well as working as cashiers, basically running the whole booth. This was an amazing opportunity for me to improve my customer service skills and communicating with strangers to persuade them to buy products, a component of leadership skills you could learn by being a part of Key Club :). After our service at the booth ended, we were given time just to hang around since the information booth wasn’t crowded with questions since the fair was about to end at the end of the hour. With that time, most Key Club volunteers just explored the fair, wearing vests and a lanyard with a badge that said “Ask Me”, in case any guests had any questions. Walking around, we saw booths of different items of Japanese culture, as well as a variety of Japanese food such as takoyaki and ramen. A booth gave out free ramen with a follow, so most volunteers were able to get 2 free bowls of ramen. This is another benefit of being a Key Club volunteer, you could get free food or items when you help out at events. Of course, don’t let this be your motivation as helping the community should be the main purpose, but sometimes you could get rewards from volunteerings other than just volunteer hours! Returning to the information booth, we helped get everything cleaned up in there such as the merch and papers, and were split up to monitor if booths were cleaning up and if there was any large areas of trash. Overall, it was a really fun experience to both volunteer and attend this fair, and I really encourage all of you to attend events because you’ll most likely have a lot of fun!

Japan Taste of

Katelyn Ngo | 11 | Publicist The biggest Japanese festival, The Taste of Japan, is presented at STC Anaheim Gardenwalk. The diverse Japanese cuisine is available for visitors to sample, along with Japanese pop culture, anime, cosplay, entertainment, activities, shopping, and family fun!

For a special and unique experience, VIP ticket holders will also get the chance to sample a wide variety of Japanese beers and sake.

From noodles to tonkatsu, a wide range of culinary vendors took part in Taste of Japan. People were directed toward these booths by volunteers, who also provided them with any information they needed. Many of the volunteers had the opportunity to go around and sample all the available foods. The cuisine was all prepared to the finest standards whether baked or cooked. The cuisine received positive reviews from our Key Club members!

During Taste of Japan, there were just as many performances as there were dishes.

The history of Karate was displayed in a presentation with a Karate demonstration. A martial technique called Karate was created in the Ryukyu Kingdom. Under the influence of Chinese martial arts, it evolved from the native Ryukyuan martial arts. Stephanie Yanez, a JPop musician, had another performance. Since she won AX Idol at Anime Expo, music artist Stephanie Yanez has been touring the US and Japan. She is most recognized for collaborating with Hatsune Miku on the original song "Ultimate Miku World." Both original and cover albums by Stephanie are available in both Japanese and English.

Banana Bash Social Megan Tran | 11 | Treasurer On the sunny Saturday of June 25th, OA Key Club, JFK Key Club, Western Key Club, and Savanna Key Club had our minion social and service event. As some people may know, I LOVE MINIONS! Saying I am a big fan is an understatement. Jokes aside, this was the first social of the term and it was one of my favorite Key Club events of all time. Not only because it was minion-themed, but because it was filled with so much service, good food, and I got to meet so many new people.

Being treasurer, I held an in-person fundraiser, selling minion rice krispie treats and minion tattoos. Safe to say, our table was a hit; at the beginning of the fundraiser, people lined up to get tattoos to put them on their faces and everywhere else. By the end of the social, we sold out of rice krispies and had only a few tattoos left. While I was walking around selling, I met so many people from different schools and interact with everyone at the social, which was genuinely so fun! Along with my fundraiser, I got to support other fundraisers; I bought spam musubi, banana milk, and empanadas. I was eating good!

On top of all this fun, there was also a service project where we all made paper puppets that looked like minions. Walking around, looking at everyone’s creations was super fun and interesting. Overall, this event was very lively, fun, cute, and made my love for minions grew even more. D30S went BANANAZ at this social and I hope this term brings many more socials like this one.

Banana Bash Social Yuehanna Yuan | 10 | Historian Our club had our first social of the year on June 25th. ‌The event is called "Banana Bash," and since none of the other historians were going, I was assigned to design a photo frame for the occasion. ‌After receiving a blank frame from Devanshi, I headed to Hobby Lobby for supplies...and ended up spending‌‌57‌‌dollars‌‌on decorations. I got 3d letters for all the letters in “banana bash” and lots of other decorations. Well, it turned out that I was spending way too much on a picture frame that we'll only use once. So I returned all the decorations and letters and the total came‌‌down‌‌to‌‌26 dollars.

Initially, I painted the letters on the frame, but the yellow paint I used wouldn't cover the dark blue underneath, so I had to cut out paper for the letters instead. The paper letters were great and covered most of the yellow painted letters. I used normal white printing paper and clear glue to make the eyes, and then drew the pupils using black markers. ‌The eyes‌‌were‌‌great‌‌at first, but the next morning the glue leaked through the paper and the ink ‌smeared. The ink along with the glue trickled a long way down the board. ‌The good news is that the glue dried, so I was able to peel off the glue and ink mixture with easily. The bad news is that I had to redraw and re-glue the eyes again. This time I used two sheets of thick paper and glued them on using a glue stick. ‌It was already 9:50 when I fixed the eyes,‌‌and‌ ‌the‌‌event‌‌started‌‌at‌‌10:00. But I got it done in time and it looked fine anyway, and that’s all that matters!

Lynne Ta | 12 | Project Chair On June 25th, Savanna, Western, John F. Kennedy, and Oxford Key Clubs held a joint social at La Palma Park. The theme was a minion bash in order to celebrate the upcoming release of the Rise of Gru, which I personally am super excited to go watch! Different schools sold various food items that were all very tasty. From Minion Mania Rice Krispies sold by Oxford and Turon and Banana Milk from JFK to Western’s Spam Musubi and Banana Bread, the food selections were amazing and a great way to raise funds for Key Club’s preferred charities!

At the social, we made minion puppets out of construction paper, and sandwich bags and did an ice breaker where we paired up people with the minion they chose! As a grand finale to the social, there was a piñata full of candy that everyone who answered a Key Club trivia question correctly got a chance to swing at. All in all, the Banana Bash Social was a success, and I highly encourage new members to come out to socials for a chance to meet new people!

Banana Bash Social Kaylin Chan | 11 | Bulletin Editor It’s been a while since I have been to a social, but the Banana Bash Social – a joint social between several Key Clubs in Division 30 South – was a reminder of how interesting Key Club events can be, no matter how many you attend!

I’ve never been the type of person to text or call much, but I loved chatting with people, in person. After going to a number of Key Club events and having a high attendance rate at socials and DCMs (due to my officer position and my personal love for Key Club), I thought I kind of understood everything and was quite experienced. It turns out, I still have much to learn!

Key Club is about service, but also about the connections we can make. As a previous Division officer and a current and past club officer, I have gotten to know quite a lot of people from various places through Key Club. As a result, my contact list has expanded exponentially from before. However, at the recent Banana Bash Social, I met two new people I’ve never seen before, and we hit it off really, really well!

During the minion ice breaker activity, I was paired with two seniors from different schools, and it turns out, we all love anime! It was a connection unrelated to Key Club, but we met because of the social. It was so much fun talking with them about different shows, getting to know them better, and just generally having an in-depth, engaging conversation about fictional characters and plotlines! I met another senior as we were considering buying banana bread from one of the fundraisers there, and a new friendship was formed… over banana bread.

In any case, I’ve realized: it doesn’t matter how many people you meet, how many times you go to an event, or how much experience you think you have. There will always be more out there to experience, enjoy, and learn! Key Club is just one way to do all of that, and in my opinion, one of the best ways to do just that and more!

Banana Bash Social Victoria Tran | 11 | Secretary This month, OAKC had a fundraiser at the Banana Bash Social between Oxford, Savanna, Western, and Kennedy! Our treasurer, Megan, homemade minion rice krispies and they were the cutest things ever because they were all decorated differently. We also sold minion tattoos at our fundraiser which were also very popular. I got a matching minion tattoo with Megan on our biceps. I saw members put tattoos on their face cheeks and it was so fun to see them come back to buy more and place them on their arms and foreheads too. Through this fundraiser, I was able to talk to a lot of new members in key club. Although it started off with advertising our minion rice krispies and maybe just a little bit of guilt tripping, we still introduced ourselves and shared laughs over minions. The best part of the fundraiser was that we sold out at the very end!! It was a super fun experience and selling out for the first time will be a core Key Club memory.

Panda Express Fundraiser OAKC also had a Panda Express fundraiser today and after my summer school, me and my friends all went there to support! It was fun eating a plate of orange chicken and chow mein while talking and hanging out. It was even better knowing that our funds were going to PTP. This month was full of fundraisers, and I never saw fundraisers as a way to connect and have fun until now. I can’t wait for the future ones!

Panda Express Fundraiser Rachel Kim | 11 | Publicist OA Key Club had our first fundraiser of the term on June 30th at Panda Express.

Since it was at the Panda Express near Oxford, which is near my house, I was able to eat Panda Express for dinner comfortably. Although I wasn’t able to eat with my friends (who had said would come and participate), I was able to eat with my family. Usually, I don’t really like eating Panda Express because my dad likes it and ate it so often that I got really sick of it. However, it tasted good since it was a while since I last ate it. I just got the usual, basic half-and-half chow mein and fried rice, orange chicken, and teriyaki chicken. I will probably have the leftovers from today for tomorrow’s lunch…

It’s nice that we are able to both raise money for the Pediatric Trauma Program (PTP) and our club funds while also eating a good meal. By supporting PTP just with these seemingly small actions, we are able to help reduce and prevent pediatric trauma and injuries of children in our Cal-Nev-Ha District! These funds also help us with funding for some of our club events in the future. I am excited to support more OAKC fundraisers to help children and support our club! Good luck Megan!

Bryan Phan | 11 | Tech Chair During this month of Key Club, I couldn’t do much for the community. Having an outside program, took up all my weekdays from the morning till 3PM tiring me out for the whole week. However, towards the end this month I was still about to support the club with our Panda Express fundraiser. Having 1 day left of precalculus, our little group went out to Panda Express where we feasted. I ordered my favorite being chao mein with the fantastic coconut shrimp and angus steak. The food was not only the good part but getting to have the opportunity to bond with fellow key clubbers as we just had fun conversations.

I can’t wait for next month of Key Club as I’ll be free and get the chance to visit many fun volunteer events like the July beach cleanup. Last summer I had a blast with my key club adventures and hope to be able to do the same this year.

Summer Summer n' n' Service Service Ryan Dang | 11 | Project Chair

It was just a normal Saturday, waking up at 7AM to go to my event. I went over to my dad’s room to print out my sign-in form as usual and leave, but the printer stopped working. I start to panic, it’s my first event and my sign-in form isn’t printed out yet. I messaged my friend to print it for me, even though it would be late, but somehow the printer started to whirr back to life.

Aside from that setback, June Food Bank was far from ordinary for me. Although I have helped at Food Banks many times, and have checked in people as a helper, this time it felt different. From waiting awkwardly to talk to the main coordinators to taking my first group picture with me in front, the 4 hours I spent felt so magical. I felt so comfortable, weaving in and out of cars, smiling, and seeing how the new freshmen looked up to me. I didn’t think that it would feel any different at first, but having people go up to you and ask how to help around brings a different feeling that I cannot describe.

My first division event in this new term is something I will never forget, and I am so thankful for OAKC’s support. We brought the most members, and it was so great to see everyone helping out and having fun! I hope you all will come out to my events soon, and hopefully you’ll have a great and memorable time.

Over the past year, I’ve been introduced to many new types of virtual service through Key Club. Not only does it serve as a way for members to come together from around the world to collaborate, but it opens our eyes to a whole new aspect of volunteering. When I first learned about apps such as Charity Miles and Pause For, I learned how important it was for virtual service events to be available for Key Club Members. Simple daily tasks such as walking, or meditation, can now be transformed into a form of service. Instead of skipping out on a 10 minute walk, or choosing to stay on my phone an extra 5 minutes, the virtual service apps guide me to becoming a better person while also serving my community. By walking with the app Charity Miles, I’m able to turn a weekend hike into a fundraiser for good. And with a few minutes away from my phone, I can use this time on the app Pause For to earn digital currency for a charity of my choice. Over the past year, I truly enjoyed being able to serve in such an interactive way. Ultimately, through the virtual opportunities that Key Club provides, we can all unite to make the world a better place.

Visions Meeting

Devanshi Kothari | 12 | President

During the last weekend of June, OAKC Board held their visions meeting. Visions Meetings are meetings that each Key Club holds during the summer before the school year to plan for the upcoming term and go over the different events/activities coming up!

This year, our visions meeting also served as our LTG visitation as our LTG, Sania Usmani, and our assigned EA, Austin Alves, attended the meeting as well. During the meeting, we went over Club News, Officer Duties, Division News, District News, and any guidelines we need to follow as well as our Club Goals! This meeting was an important one to train our new board and have an overview of our entire term. We discussed essential topics and prepared for our upcoming term to make it as successful as possible.

During any term or for any club, visions meetings are important to set our goals and gain an understanding of what we plan to do in the upcoming term through our club. In all, it was a great bonding experience with our board members, and we were able to learn more about everything coming up. Excited for the school year to start!

Officer Training Conference: OTC Brandon Duong | 12 | Historian At Officer Training Conference hosted by Costa Mesa High School, appointed and elected leaders from across the Rainbow Region came together to learn more about what it means to bring honor to all of Key Club and more about our core values. We saw the light in our future and dug a little deeper with an amazing Princess and the Frog skit from D30S LTG Sania Usumani and D04C LTG Sunny Wang during our opening ceremony. In addition, there was a speech from a Key Club advisor who was nurtured and grew throughout her time in Key Club and is giving back to her community. The event had a little something for everyone involved, with specific lessons for each different position and a secondary session for general soft skills that are great to learn for anyone.

Another large component of the Officer Training Conference was not just learning from the amazing lessons put on by the LTGs and members of the district board, but also by meeting other people in similar positions across the region and learning more about how they do their job.

The shared learning experiences from all the clubs from various areas all culminate in a bettering of the entire key club organization.

Overall, leaders from across the region were treated to a special event in which they were able to socialize and enjoy time with others from many different backgrounds, while also learning skills they could take back to their home clubs to enrich their positions and the club as a whole.

Each person was able to choose the leadership lessons they learned through the sessions to provide a unique perspective they can use to improve on their weaknesses and further enhance their strengths.

Key Club Levels Helen Tran | 11 | Vice President Every single term, I am reminded of just how confusing the Key Club structure can be, trying to explain it to many who have only recently joined. But do not fear, because your VP Helen Tran is here! This article is my little crash course to all the Key Club levels, but feel free to reach out to me if you have any other questions!

To many Oxford students, Key Club is just some random high-school club that offers many volunteer opportunities. In reality, Oxford Academy Key Club is only a fraction of a large, international organization called Kiwanis International. Every level in which Key Club is divided into is based upon geographical location.

To start, various nearby high-school/community Key Clubs make up a division. Oxford Academy Key Club, specifically, is part of Division 30 South (D30S), which includes the following high schools: Anaheim, Cypress, Fairmont Prep, John F. Kennedy, Katella, Loara, Los Alamitos, Savanna, Servite, Magnolia, Western, and Whitney! Lieutenant governors oversee each division and are assisted by their division leadership team.

Again based on location, a few divisions make up a region. Regions are served by region advisors, and ours are Ms. Kathy Kendrick, Mr. Michael Moss, with Ms. Pong and Mr. Pong being the assistant RAs! We are Region 3: Rainbow Region, and this includes Division 04 North (Otters), Division 04 West (Dragons), Division 04 Central (Frogs), Division 04 South (Lions), Division 04 East (Goldfish), Division 30 South (Suns), and Division 30 North (Rhinos)!

Next are districts, which are typically determined by state or nation. The California-Nevada-Hawaii (CNH) District currently consists of 80 divisions, including D30S! Districts are also led by their respective governors and district officers, making up the district leadership team.

Taking it up a notch, the 33 current organized districts comprise Key Club International as a whole.

With clubs on every continent except for Antarctica, a board of trustees consisting of committees guides the organization.

Key Club International is considered the "high school branch" of Kiwanis International, a volunteer-led organization that holds a similar structure to Key Club International. Many other service programs are part of the Kiwanis family. K-Kids and Builders Club are meant for elementary and middle school students respectively, while Circle K is the collegiate version. Aktion Club, Kiwanis Junior, and Kiwaniannes are also branches of Kiwanis International.
