Carl Annese

The Arc, Oneida-Lewis Chapter Utica/Oneida County

Carl is a friendly, outgoing man with a great sense of humor. After graduating high school with a Special Education diploma, Carl participated in the full-college experience of CollegeWorks, a two-year collaborative post-secondary program between The Arc, OneidaLewis Chapter and Mohawk Valley Community College.

CollegeWorks honed Carl’s strengths and added job-experience training. He engaged in classroom and community experiences to develop essential skills for employment and social success. During this time, ACCES-VR deemed Carl not yet ready for competitive employment and referred him to a community-based pre-employment training site in the Arc’s Progress Industries at Spirit & Sanzone Distributors.

Within a few years, Spirit & Sanzone became a competitive employment worksite. At that time, Carl’s skills were assessed again, and he did not meet the requirements for continuing in this workplace. Undeterred, Carl showed his resilience by pivoting his employment path and embracing new challenges, joining another Progress Industries site at Precise Kit Promotions in 2017. Precise Kit is a wholesale custom packaging company that supplies quality personal care kits, gifts and emergency supplies internationally.

Carl’s career journey has been on a steady upward trajectory ever since. His supervisors at Precise Kit continue to commend him as a capable worker who is always willing to learn. Over the past six years, Carl has learned to operate a pallet jack and the palletizing processes, including packaging, making boxes, kit assembly, and more.

Carl’s easygoing nature and great sense of humor bring joy to his co-workers and supervisors. Carl demonstrates flexibility, and is always eager and excited to work, a model for his peers. He’s always smiling and in a jolly, cheerful mood. Carl is exceptionally dependable and rarely misses work. His passion for the working world and commitment to being a prideful, productive member of his community is evident in his consistent dedication and positive attitude.

Carl enjoys his job because it allows him to earn money and work with his friends. He is delighted when he receives his paycheck in the mail, and can be found supporting his favorite hockey team, the Utica Comets. He’s a season ticket holder and is as loyal a fan as can be. His earnings allow him to support his hobbies, recreation and pastimes.

Since joining Precise Kit, Carl has shown noted improvement in communication skills and confidence in the workplace. Knowing that his work benefits people across the country and the world fills him with pride. He especially appreciates the kindness and encouragement of the Precise Kit staff, and is ready for anything the future brings.

Being nominated for this award makes me feel…

...proud, happy, and excited.

The work I do is important and I try to do a good job.

Adrian Aviles

Center for Disability Services

Albany/Albany County

Adrian came to Center Mail Fulfillment as an intern from an employment training program. His initial tasks were supporting meter operators and mail processing clerks. Most of his day was spent shadowing or assisting other staff. After a stellar performance as an intern, Adrian transitioned to full-time employment as a mail processing clerk.

While a mail processing clerk usually specializes in one or two tasks, Adrian learned as many tasks as possible. His initial assignment was catching mail off an offline postage meter. Within a matter of months, Adrian was independently operating that postage meter and did not need anyone to catch mail for him. This complex task involves operating a computer and machine at the same time to make sure that mail gets metered, processed and accounted for. Adrian was doing this for hundreds of customers with thousands of mail pieces a day, and was noticeably accurate and productive at metering. He was also one of the neatest and most organized mail processing clerks.

After a year or so of excelling in the meter room, Adrian was assigned the additional task of overseeing quality control, auditing processed mail, and checking for proper postage. Adrian showed success at this task with limited errors and improved customer service. In addition, he also took it upon himself to learn the ins and outs of the sorting division.

Noticing there were days when the mail sorting department was short-staffed or had heavier volume, Adrian wanted to help his fellow employees. He dove right in and learned how to sleeve and strap mail on the presort machine, which included a laborious process called “walking the line” up and down the machine, catching mail and accurately placing it in the proper bin. As with previous tasks, Adrian excelled with his usual positive attitude. Adrian is consistently in a good mood, always asking where he can help. Anytime there are new projects or new things going on at the Mail Fulfillment Center, Adrian asks how he can help or how it will impact his co-workers. One of his favorite times of the year is when NYSID’s CREATE students are on site working on assistive technology inventions. As an avid video gamer and TV watcher, he is interested in what sort of robots or inventions the students are working on to make the mail operation work more efficiently.

In his spare time, Adrian shares his love of cooking, video games and shopping for clothing. He tells stories about cooking with his family and hanging out with them at home.

Adrian’s hard work, stellar professional growth and cheerful outlook deserve recognition as he consistently demonstrates the characteristics of an outstanding performer.

I like my job because…

...I like to help my co-workers and make sure the job gets done.

Daniel Barto

Daniel exhibits outstanding teamwork and performance on the Arc’s Spot On janitorial team on a daily basis. He has grown into his role exceptionally well over five years, understanding his work at a high level and executing it with little supervision.

Dan is generally the first one to show up to work at an account, and gets started on his tasks right away. His work ethic is among the best, as he is always willing to learn new skills or techniques. During the janitorial team’s monthly training sessions, he often asks questions to confirm his understanding and to lead by example in front of his peers. Dan expresses interest in expanding his skill set by signing up for cross training with higher-end equipment used at special cleaning sites. He consistently asks crew supervisors “What else can I do?” when he completes his assigned tasks.

Dan and his peers service numerous NYSID accounts which are continuously satisfied due to the team’s willingness to go above and beyond. The crew will often speak of their plans that evening/weekend or discuss multiple topics. They provide each other with helpful tips on matters they all are experiencing outside of work. Their camaraderie is evident.

Dan is a joy to work with, as he exhibits a positive attitude, respect and willingness to do his job at a high level. He is recognized by supervisors, managers and others as one of the best custodians. He has rarely missed a day of work and is always early. Dan’s positive attitude is infectious and he makes the team better.

While Dan enjoys the simple things like grocery shopping for favorite meals he makes at home, he has a way of impacting everyone around him. It is always fun to hear and observe Dan and his peers work at such a level together while maintaining a work environment that is fulfilling, fun and rewarding on a day-to-day basis.

If I didn’t have this job…

...I would probably not be working at all. I am happy to be on my team.

Austin Battisti

Liberty Arc

Amsterdam/Montgomery County

Austin Battisti joined the manufacturing division of Liberty Arc in April 2023, and has since made a significant impact at both Liberty Industrial Center (LIC) and Liberty Enterprises (LE). Austin contributes to the production of sorbent products, file boxes, chemicals, calcium chloride, office supplies, soaps, sanitizers, janitorial products, and private co-packaging contracts. His flexibility, willingness to learn, and readiness to work wherever needed make him a valuable team member.

Austin is known for his exceptional attention to detail and accuracy. He seeks clarification from supervisors when needed, and is currently focused on improving his productivity by increasing his stamina. Austin takes pride in his work, inspires confidence in his colleagues and motivates others, consistently demonstrating Liberty’s core values through his dedication, reliability, honesty, trustworthiness, attention to product quality, and exceptional teamwork. He enjoys his work and has developed strong relationships with his colleagues who appreciate his willingness to learn and his versatility. His lead supervisor shares that Austin is eager to take on new challenges and learn all jobs offered at LIC and LE. His respect for others makes him an outstanding addition to the manufacturing operation.

Having a job that is meaningful, motivating and financially rewarding has made a difference in Austin’s health and well-being. His income allows him to pay for and maintain a vehicle. Reliable transportation is important because he lives in a rural area with no access to public transportation or cab services. He gets to and from work and pays for gas, insurance and repairs. His vehicle allows Austin to participate in his church where he takes a lead role at services. He also helps contribute to living expenses for his household so that his dad is able to make plans for retirement.

Although Austin has held other competitive jobs, the culture of the private sector jobs he had were not always supportive, affecting his mental health and well-being. Austin enjoys working in an atmosphere that motivates and recognizes his hard work, and his time with Liberty Enterprises has been both motivating and rewarding. His work performance is a direct reflection of his good health and job satisfaction. In just over a year, Austin has grown significantly and will continue to evolve through training and mentoring.

Being nominated for this award makes me feel…

...very happy that all of the hard work I do is paying off.

Jerhia Benjamin

Bates Troy, Inc.

Vestal/Broome County

Jerhia Benjamin was referred to Bates Troy, Inc. from ACHIEVE, a NYSID Member Agency which helps individuals with disabilities find employment in Broome, Chenango and Tioga counties. Jerhia was hired part-time shortly after graduating high school. Within three months, she asked to become a full-time employee.

Immediately upon working at Bates Troy Healthcare Linen, Jerhia became known for how pleasant she is to work with and how much she accomplishes. The plant manager said, “Jerhia is a hard worker and does any job she is asked to do. She is always on time, never misses work and, most importantly, always has a smile on her face.” Her many co-workers are now friends as well as peers.

Jerhia has a strong work ethic. Her regular workspace is always clean, and she looks for more to do when her work is completed. Jerhia has been called on to do work at a different workstation and has no trouble picking up and learning a new type of production work. Her enthusiasm for helping her teammates is infectious.

Moving forward, Jerhia is working toward learning more of the folding and production duties. She understands the time constraints with her positions and strives to complete tasks on time and done well. She is on track for becoming a team lead, while saving to buy a car.

Bates Troy is an inclusive work environment with several people with disabilities working each day. Jerhia stands out as a top performer among these workers and throughout the entire workforce. Each day in the laundry business can be a challenge as conditions change and orders for items in demand may pile up. This never flusters Jerhia. She is still smiling when there is a request to get more done.

And finally, Jerhia has excellent attendance. She has not missed any time without first requesting the day off. Her willingness to do whatever job comes her way, and her proactive attitude for her work make her an asset at Bates Troy. Her co-workers and supervisors alike count on Jerhia as a core employee who will get things done.

If I didn’t have this job…

...I would be struggling to find a job, as jobs can be hard to come by.

James Brescia

James is well-respected by his employer and peers and by staff at Stony Brook University’s Wang Center, an important NYSID customer. Kellermeyer Bergensons Services (KBS) is a NYSID Corporate Partner which works with local disability support organizations to place individuals with disabilities in well-paying custodial positions. James stands out as a meticulous team player who takes pride in his work, someone who has come a long way in life.

James experienced an unstable childhood, including a house fire in which the family lost everything. His father was an addict. His mother worked two jobs to support the children, leaving little time for James, who eventually made a series of poor choices. He became incarcerated at a young age, which woke him up to opportunities to make better life choices. Gaining his freedom and sobriety, he entered the work world with a new attitude.

James started working for KBS as a cleaner at Stony Brook University’s Sports Center in 2017. From the beginning, he came in daily with a smile and greeting to everyone, always punctual, and volunteering on many occasions to stay late if needed.

Due to James’ high level of attention to detail, he was moved to the University’s Wang Center. The building holds numerous conference halls, classrooms, auditoriums, a chapel, and an East Asian food court for students. This is where university events are held and the standards are accelerated, due to major events.

In 2019, James was promoted to team lead at the site. He demonstrates great leadership skills and is well-respected by his crew. James leads by example and is the first to assist any worker with a task. He has made the workers a true team, taking interest in each of them and in the customer’s staff.

According to the Wang Center executive director, James’ contributions to the site are invaluable. “Throughout his tenure, James has worked tirelessly to ensure that our facilities are maintained to the highest standards,” she said. The building manager also shared, “James demonstrates a professional approach to his responsibilities and has become an integral part of our facilities team. His attention to even the smallest detail is a very good reason why the Wang Center is so successful.”

Reliable employment through NYSID became an opportunity for James to change his trajectory, as well as countless others who have been given a second chance. He proudly shared that his job has allowed him to grow and build a foundation. He uses his paycheck to live on his own and maintain a vehicle, as well as help others with their cars. He also donates to charities and churches.

Being nominated for this award makes me feel…

...proud, knowing how far that I’ve come. My mother and stepfather are proud of the things I’ve accomplished.

Juan Castillo

AHRC New York City

Manhattan/New York County

Juan has been a dedicated porter at Hudson River Services for 10 years. His journey has not been easy, as he contends with autism and significant cognitive impairments. Diagnosed with mild intellectual disability and severe behavior problems at the age of 7, Juan faces daily struggles. Yet, through it all, he continues to demonstrate a dedication to his job and an exceptional level of resilience.

One of Juan’s primary challenges is difficulty in transitioning between tasks at work. He finds it hard to ease from one activity to another and needs continual redirection. Juan also works at a slower pace and often requires close supervision to complete tasks. Communication can be particularly challenging for him, as he frequently provides monosyllabic answers, even when prompted by his job coach. Despite these challenges, Juan is incredibly appreciative of the support he receives and has openly expressed his gratitude for his job coach, who has continuously guided and encouraged him. Juan’s positive attitude toward the assistance he receives has been instrumental in facilitating his job performance. Despite considerable hurdles, he shows an incredible willingness to work and to improve.

Conversations with Juan’s supervisor highlight the unique challenges he faces daily. However, they also underscore the persistence and determination he brings to his role. Despite needing constant guidance and support, Juan continues to maintain his position on the Hudson River Services janitorial team. His commitment is reflected in the way he embraces his duties, no matter how challenging they may seem.

One of the most remarkable facets of Juan’s character is his resilience. Working in an environment where he needs to be followed continuously and redirected numerous times requires incredible patience and adaptability. Juan has shown that he can withstand the daily challenges presented to him and continue to strive for personal and professional growth.

Juan’s story is not only one of challenges, but also one of achievements. Every day he works, he breaks barriers and changes perceptions about the capabilities of individuals with significant disabilities. His perseverance and positive attitude serve as an inspiration to all those around him, including his colleagues and supervisors.

The AHRC NYC team believes that Juan exemplifies the spirit of outstanding performance, overcoming incredible odds and continually striving to do his best. His strong work ethic and resilience highlight the importance of supporting and empowering individuals with disabilities in the workplace.

My paycheck helps me to… ...buy clothing and food and have hobbies.

Jason Cwiklinski

As Jason grew, it became clear that lack of oxygen during birth resulted in intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). His development was marked by struggles and triumphs as Jason reached milestones much more slowly than his twin sister. Walking, talking and learning to feed himself all took more time and effort.

Jason faced numerous challenges in school and social situations. Learning for him was different than for other students, his pace slower and his challenges more pronounced. The constant feeling of being different eroded his self-confidence and dampened his spirit.

An opportunity arose for Jason to attend the BOCES program in Allegany County in sixth grade. The Elm Street Learning Academy was warm, welcoming and inclusive, filled with teachers who understood his challenges and were committed to helping him succeed. Jason also found friends who accepted him for who he was.

Finishing at BOCES in 2019, Jason was referred to the Arc Allegany Steuben’s Employment Services, which provided him with vocational training, job coaching and support services. He soon discovered he has a knack for organization and attention to detail, making him well-suited for a job as a cleaner. Jason was hired by the Arc’s affirmative contract cleaning business, Pro Clean Solutions. He was assigned to the cleaning crew at the Henderson Smith State Office Building in Hornell. Within months, Jason’s confidence soared. He quickly developed new skills, built meaningful relationships with co-workers, and became an indispensable member of the team. His infectious smile and positive attitude brighten the workplace. Crew Supervisor Carl Dandridge said, “Jason is a real pro who works independently within our team dynamic contributing greatly to the overall effectiveness, efficiency and professionalism of our team at Henderson Smith.”

For the first time in his life, Jason was earning his own money, allowing him to purchase a car, and to set savings goals for himself such as buying a mountain bike. His job has instilled a sense of independence and self-reliance. It empowers him to make decisions, solve problems and traverse the complexities of daily life.

Christopher Koehler, Director of Business Operations at the Arc Allegany Steuben said, “Jason’s story is a testament to the transformative power of employment. His life is a shining example of triumph over adversity, reminding us all of the power of inclusivity, the importance of support, and the incredible potential that lies within every individual regardless of their challenges.”

For most of his life, Jason navigated a world that underestimated him. Working on the Henderson Smith Cleaning crew became not just a job for Jason, but the key that unlocked his potential, shattering the stereotypes and reshaping the perceptions that once confined him.

If I didn’t have this job…

...I guess I would be unemployed and counting on my mom and dad for money. I definitely wouldn’t be as happy as I am now.

Tyler Davis

The Arc Wayne Newark/Wayne County

Tyler Davis is a dependable and devoted employee of The Arc Wayne and its Home Delivered Meals program. He demonstrates a strong work ethic, consistent performance while working independently, and a drive to improve his personal and work life to achieve his goals.

Tyler began working at Key Industries in Newark in July 2008 through the Work Experience program. His parents said the program and the staff at The Arc Wayne are the reason that Tyler became a successful and productive contributor to society. Tyler began the program in production, but quickly decided that it was not for him. He then worked in Food Services and realized that he wanted to pursue this field after graduating from Clyde-Savannah High School in 2012. Tyler has continued to grow and succeed while working in the Food Services department.

Since October 2022, Tyler has been working in the Home Delivered Meals program on a NYSID contract. Every day, Tyler’s manager gives him a list of tasks that he successfully completes independently. He is organized and highly accurate in completing them. Tyler works on packaging a specific number of bagged lunches and meals with unwavering accuracy. He also works in the Summer Meals program for children, and volunteers for the Angel Tree during the Christmas holiday.

Tyler is recognized by his co-workers for his honesty, enthusiasm, drive for accuracy, sincere concern for others, and willingness to assist his co-workers. He enjoys his job and takes pride in knowing that he is helping others. Tyler’s wages provide financial security, and he stated that he can give back to the community by helping those in need.

One of Tyler’s most memorable accomplishments was the publishing of a book that he wrote and illustrated. The Egyptian Jackal Princess is available for purchase through Barnes & Noble and Amazon. Tyler states that he would like to write more books and has sent other manuscripts to television and movie companies. Tyler also aspires to become a chef and have one of his books made into a Disney movie.

Tyler’s drive to improve in all aspects of his life, his confidence and his genuine compassion for others are commendable and inspiring.

My paycheck helps me to…

...buy things I need and want, pay for vacations, contribute to the household, and help other people.

Kimberly Dougherty

People Inc.

Depew/Erie County

Kimberly Dougherty is an exemplary employee who any company would love to have. Kim is dedicated to her job and is well-liked by her co-workers, often assisting them when needed. She is a mature and responsible individual.

When Kim began her People Inc. career in 1994, she was shy and lacked confidence due to her intellectual disability. She started as a general assembler in the Contract Manufacturing Department, but Kim’s lack of confidence initially limited her ability to handle a variety of jobs. However, her confidence grew as she tried new tasks, and she no longer needed reassurance to successfully complete assignments.

Throughout the years, Kim participated in many agency programs that helped her develop self-confidence, advocate for herself and explore career options. These programs included job application practice, mock interviews and training on appropriate co-worker interactions.

After many years as a general assembler, Kim became a day porter with People Inc.’s mobile crew, a new role which required her to work independently and make her own decisions. Kim quickly learned the necessary skills for the janitorial field. As her confidence grew, she learned to complete her work assignments independently, and she was eventually assigned to clean the NYS toll stations secured by NYSID for People Inc.

Kim worked on both state and private cleaning contracts, continually developing her skills and confidence, becoming a role model for her crew. Then the COVID-19 pandemic hit, and life changed drastically for everyone.

At that time, Kim was living with her parents. Due to health and safety concerns, she did not return to work for nearly two years and remained isolated. Sadly, both parents passed away during this period, and Kim moved in with her brother. Despite these significant changes, she wanted to return to work. There were concerns that she might revert to her quiet and shy self, but Kim was warmly welcomed back by her co-workers, which gave her the support and confidence she needed after her two-year absence.

Around this time, People Inc. acquired a new state contract with the DOT in Depew. Kim eagerly joined the cleaning crew at this facility where she has flourished. DOT employees have nothing but praise for her. They commend her attention to detail and independence, and Kim has made new friends and enjoys her work assignment thoroughly.

The money Kim earns allows her to purchase new clothing and enjoy local recreational outings. Outside of work, Kim enjoys walking the family dog, playing Bingo and watching movies. One of her favorite TV shows is “Little House on the Prairie.” She is also saving for a dream trip to Disney World.

I like my job because…

...I enjoy cleaning because it makes others happy to have a clean work environment.

Alyce Fancher

Suburban Adult Services, Inc.

Elma/Erie County

Suburban Adult General Enterprises (SAGE), a division of Suburban Adult Services, Inc. (SASI), has provided employment opportunities to Alyce Fancher for 29 years. During this lengthy tenure, she has developed her skills of responsibility, teamwork and how to work independently. She also personifies a reliable, personable and helpful approach in her work environment, which is reflected in her relationships among co-workers and customers.

Alyce is assigned to the Department of Transportation Buffalo/Orchard Park offices and the Department of Labor office in Williamsville. While responsible for the cleanliness of offices, restrooms and break areas throughout her assigned worksites, one of Alyce’s favorite responsibilities is mopping floors. She takes great pride and enjoyment from her hard work while viewing the aesthetic beauty of shiny floors. Beyond Alyce’s workmanship, she often covers for absent co-workers and will pick up extra shifts as the need arises.

Originally, Alyce viewed herself as being a medical doctor with the purpose of helping people and saving lives. However, life can take us down different paths at times, and one path led to Alyce being diagnosed with a mental health illness. This diagnosis challenged her childhood career dream toward other career opportunities with the same purpose of helping others. Alyce explored numerous career paths in different fields, mostly at nursing homes, hoping to touch on a bit of her dream. Eventually, she expanded her career scope with a short stint in the production field, just prior to finding the “right fit” with her career decision of joining the SAGE custodial team. She confirms this with just a few of her statements such as, “It wasn’t until I started as a janitorial crew member at SAGE that I realized cleaning gave me something no other job had: fulfillment.” Alyce also said, “Cleaning is relaxing and I like going to work every day; it puts money in my pocket.”

On a personal level, Alyce enjoys spending time with her friends, going out to eat, maintaining her apartment, doing yard work, and completing puzzles. She lives independently, maintains her own vehicle and pays her own bills. She works with a support team to help maintain her personal goals of ongoing success at work and in the community. Earning a paycheck contributes toward the opportunity to vacation and buy the things she wants and needs.

Alyce expressed being recognized and nominated for NYSID’s Outstanding Performance Award makes her feel important and happy, knowing people appreciate her hard work. Alyce exemplifies an outstanding work ethic and is valued by those who know her. SAGE leadership is fortunate to know Alyce as a member of the community while applauding her qualities as a person and her workmanship.

My paycheck helps me to…

...be financially independent so I can pay my bills.

Phyllis Feaster

The Arc Erie County New York Williamsville/Erie County

The Arc Erie County New York understands that there are times when taking someone out of their comfort zone will unlock their potential.

In 2017, Phyllis was working on NYSID commodity fulfillment orders until she was identified as a good candidate for the janitorial department. The management team advocated that she was a hard worker and picked up on new tasks quickly. Phyllis was hired for NYSID janitorial contracts in June 2019, beginning at the Erie County Appellate Judge’s office. Almost immediately, the customer shared how much they enjoyed having Phyllis as their cleaner, as she was polite, worked hard and would take care of any request they had without problem. Over the years, she has continued to provide quality services and customer satisfaction.

Next up, Phyllis was asked to assist at other janitorial sites, and so she began cleaning Arc group homes and helping the supervisor cover at various sites. When an opening at the Broadway Market came up, she happily accepted this new opportunity. Soon after she was hired, the site manager praised Phyllis’ quality of cleaning, which surpassed expectations, as well as her politeness. With the busy Easter season approaching, the Market requested that Phyllis be added to the schedule. Throughout the Easter season, her work ethic was praised by management and visitors alike. Watching Phyllis light up with a smile on her face when she read their statements was priceless. Phyllis quickly became the go-to at the Market, as she began showing new cleaners how to properly complete the job at hand.

The janitorial supervisor said, “Phyllis will always answer the phone when you call. She is more than willing to help me out. She is a hard worker, and her cleaning is top notch. She is such a value to have to our department.”

Phyllis’ progress over the past year in particular has been a pleasure to watch. She has become so confident in her abilities and has become an even better cleaner by working in different settings. Her paycheck allows her to take care of herself, and she firmly believes that being an Arc custodian is her dream job.

Being nominated for this award makes me feel… ...proud! I have accomplished a lot with the Arc.

Donald Feltman

The Arc of Rensselaer County Troy/Rensselaer County

Donald Feltman started at the Arc’s Riverside Enterprises in 2010, a single young man putting his best foot forward. While he came in unsure of himself and shy, over the years he has gained confidence in himself, made many friends, and married his best friend.

Donald learned how to package foods and scour pads sold to NYSID customers, including how to palletize the products and label them correctly. He offered many suggestions to speed up processes, many of which were applied to the packaging of products. Donald also learned to operate much of the production equipment over time, and learned the detailed steps involved to change over the equipment to run different products.

Today, Donald switches a few pieces of the equipment over on his own, which helps when the production manager is out of the office. Once he has learned all of the pieces of equipment, he will advance to training new staff members.

Donald is a great employee and a caring co-worker to all. He is excited for the next step of becoming the trainer and ensuring his team’s success.

If I didn’t have this job… ...I would be poor and living with my in-laws.

Robert Hicks

Robert left New York City during the COVID-19 pandemic, returning in the spring of 2023 to pursue work despite living in a shelter. He desired a job with consistent hours and eventually found his way to the GoodTemps employment program through Goodwill Industries of Greater NY/Northern NJ.

Robert was hired in the summer of 2023 as a junior administrative assistant for the NYC Department of Citywide Administrative Services, a long-time NYSID and GoodTemps customer. The position involves assisting clients with various concerns via e-mail.

“I was lucky that GoodTemps hired me. I was in fear because living in a shelter and trying to find a job is hard, but I was able to land a job and become permanent,” Robert said. His behavioral health goal was to maintain a positive environment at work and also during non-work hours.

Robert hopes to climb the employment ladder of City of New York opportunities, and one day obtain a federal position as a counterterrorism forensic scientist. He acknowledged that if he didn’t have this job, his life would be different.

“I have always been a very quiet person, but GoodTemps helped me gain the courage I need to ask questions and learn the job to my best capacity, and to return to school to gain a position with a higher salary,” Robert said. He credits GoodTemps for how it helps individuals with diverse employment barriers obtain rewarding work, providing the training and guidance based on an individual’s specific skill set.

Robert appreciates GoodTemps for helping to ease the stress of finding secure work and a place to live, so that he can pursue his employment dreams.

Clarence Holdren

Warren, Washington & Albany Counties ARC Queensbury/Albany County

Clarence (CJ) Holdren is a 15-year employee with WWAARC who has taken an admirable journey from part-time custodian to full-time supervisor.

CJ grew up in Binghamton where he was raised by his grandparents. He worked with his grandfather on their family tree farm while also assisting as a trades apprentice laborer. CJ was characterized as being from a broken home and was diagnosed with a learning disability at a young age. Although CJ struggled with reading retention, he excelled through the use of additional resources provided by public school special education. He adapted to learning through the use of action execution to achieve material retention. When CJ was 17, his grandfather sadly passed away, and shortly thereafter his grandmother became ill. CJ worked as a home health aide during this time.

Following the loss of his grandmother, CJ moved to the Albany area to live with his father who worked for WWAARC. Although reluctant to use his disability as a crutch, CJ eventually took his dad’s advice and was hired as a part-time janitor. His strong work ethic, coupled with his willingness to learn new skills and assume additional responsibilities, resulted in CJ earning a full-time cleaning position. His ability to create positive relationships with co-workers, managers and customers quickly resulted in CJ becoming a swing-shift employee covering virtually every janitorial position throughout WWAARC’s portfolio.

CJ’s hard work was further recognized in 2023 when he was promoted to a janitorial supervisory position. His continuous career growth has resulted in him managing a large staff and payroll, along with oversight of a considerable volume of supplies, materials and equipment. Furthermore, his personal and professional development has enhanced relationships with colleagues, customers and tenants. CJ continues to capitalize on every opportunity to expand his knowledge base and support his work team.

Be it riding his Harley Davidson motorcycle, taking his annual pilgrimage to a NASCAR race, or visiting family and friends in Binghamton, CJ cherishes these experiences. Although CJ missed out on time with friends and social engagements during his coming of age as he cared for his grandparents, the values and ethics which were instilled in him as a child continue to drive him daily. He also recognizes and appreciates the agency programs which support and assist people with disabilities in providing opportunities to enhance quality of life and maintain rewarding employment.

Being nominated for this award makes me feel...
...valued, appreciated and recognized for my passion, loyalty and hard work.

Joseph Klingensmith

Lifetime Assistance

Rochester/Monroe County

Joe joined the team at Classified Scanning and Shredding as a document destruction technician in 2022, Lifetime’s social enterprise where individuals with disabilities assure the security of customers’ documents. Joe’s supervisor describes him as “always taking pride in his work and very careful not to make mistakes.” She also stated that “Joe loves to help others, and he is always on time.” This praise comes after some hard work by Joe and those who support him.

Joe’s journey to successful employment was a path of many new starts. Each start was a measure of his personal growth and development through self-assurance to become who he is today. His supervisor said Joe’s initial challenge was “getting along with others, but he has overcome this and gets along with everyone.”

After graduating from Clyde-Savannah High School in 2013, Joe tried a few different day habilitation programs until he found his way to Lifetime Assistance. While in Lifetime’s day program, he would often help staff with getting the supplies for the Pre-Vocational Work Center. During this time, he struggled with inter-personal relationships. Supervisors observed that Joe would very often rather be alone, putting car models together. Then the COVID-19 pandemic hit, and he became isolated at home.

In February 2022, Joe was offered a new start at the Classified Scanning and Shredding team working on NYSID customer documents. He struggled at first with all the tasks involved, as well as learning to get along with his co-workers. Joe would often have a negative response when redirected by staff, or quietly stand at a different work area where he thought he could be by himself. Now, when you ask Joe what he likes about work, you are greeted with a smile and quick response: “I like working with my co-workers. We laugh and joke around while working, yet still get the job done.”

Joe enjoys receiving a paycheck for his hard work which pays for essentials and fun stuff. When asked where he might be if he didn’t have his Classified Shredding job, Joe replied, “I would probably still have a bad attitude, going to a day hab program, and would not be very happy.” He has proven that you can’t change the past, but you can change your future.

Joe has learned that being a team player is crucial to the success of the shredding operation. He has become more independent with his tasks, and even has the opportunity to deliver packages around the building. Joe mastered a task that was originally for two people, which he now completes on his own. Most of all, he is proud of turning his life around.

Being nominated for this award makes me feel...
...happy. It’s proof of how far I’ve come.

Brian Lockwood

Mountain Lake Services

Mineville/Essex County

Brian Lockwood has found focus in the work at Essex Industries’ woodshop operation. It has become his fire to learn and perfect his skills and work toward being a leader on the molder room team, where NYSID cedar picnic tables are produced. He also enjoys watching his savings account grow from this endeavor.

Meaghan Lee, Brian’s SEMP/ ACCES-VR Manager, said, “Brian’s work ethic has improved tremendously this past year. At the beginning of the year, his productivity percentages were low. Within two weeks, a fire seemed to have been set within him. Brian now remains anywhere from 85-100% on his production rates.”

Shop Supervisor, Preston Mitchell, notes that Brian is knowledgeable of the entire process of table construction: “From stickling the wood for drying to cross-cutting to molding to drilling to the final packaging, Brian can do it all. He is also great at quality control. And to top it off, he has a great personality.”

This personality comes with a wild sense of humor, a great quality of Brian’s that, in the words of Senior Foreman, Doug Bishop, “lifts everyone’s spirits with his comical ways.” Preston agrees. “Brian works well with his peers. He partners up well on various jobs. He takes great pride in his work. It was fun to see his excitement when he visited the Lincoln Pond campsite and noticed our picnic tables located there. In fact, he is very interested in the destinations of all of our orders.” That follow-through quality, attention to detail and pride in his work have been Brian’s mantra since the fires of inspiration first ignited.

“I am a quick learner,” Brian said. “But I’m also a hands-on learner. When I first began the job, I wasn’t focusing on the work enough. I know my work ethic is better. Focusing on the job is very important to me now.” This targeted, zeroing-in on the task before him has become an almost Zen-like mission for Brian. It represents a reconstruction of his whole life plan, his self-image and his place in society. While he loves to employ his quick wit frequently, it in no way detracts from the work. Brian loves the hum of the saws and drills in the molder room. Those sounds help bring the focus of his world down to what is right in front of him and what needs to be done.

Brian’s work on self-improvement and taking control of his life has led him to enjoy the quieter parts of home life, like listening to music or hiking around the Adirondacks with small groups. He also enjoys the group effort of his bowling team at the Mineville lanes.

The personal growth Brian has shown this year is outstanding. He comes to work motivated and willing to get the job done. He has made connections with his team members that link him to the community.

My dream would be…

...to go to college. I’m interested in welding. I also like to work on engines and mechanical stuff.

Christopher Lopes

Imaging & Microfilm Access

Bohemia/Suffolk County

From the first day of his employment with Imaging & Microfilm Access (IMA) in November 2017, it was apparent that Chris had talent that went well beyond the position for which he was hired. Chris was referred by ACCES-VR and United Cerebral Palsy-Suffolk for a production clerk-document prep position shortly after graduating high school.

Quiet and reserved, Chris quickly learned the process of preparing confidential documents for scanning. Today, his work is consistently error-free, and he asks appropriate questions as needed. Chris is very observant and often brings issues up before they become problems for other employees. He is neat, polite and conscientious about his work.

During slow periods, it can be necessary to lay staff off temporarily, which was the case with Chris at one point. He took the skills he learned here and went to work at another document scanning company, returning to IMA when the layoff ended. He is flexible with his hours, and when his family relocated further away from the office, found ways to arrive to work on time.

Chris has taken on more technical and involved tasks at IMA which earned him the title of production clerk-scanner with an increase in salary. He is a key operator of large-format blueprint scanners, using his discretion to choose the appropriate setting for best image quality. He has learned how to operate a complex microfiche scanner, which enabled IMA to accept more NYSID contract work. He recently learned to use an overhead book scanner, also instrumental in the Preferred Source program. Chris is capable of basic trouble shooting on the equipment and offers suggestions on how best to accomplish tasks. He continually strives to increase his production while maintaining a high degree of accuracy and quality in his work.

Chris can be counted on to do just about any task in the office, from helping in the warehouse to document preparation and scanning, without any complaints. He switches gears when needed and picks up on new tasks easily, putting his heart into everything he does to the best of his ability, often exceeding expectations. When he perceives something to be beyond his capabilities, he voices his concerns and works through issues to find solutions that benefit the company.

I like my job because...

...it gives me a sense of purpose and independence. I like earning my own money and not depending on my parents.

James Mann

Jim has been a member of the Mozaic team for 25 years, performing a number of different jobs at various sites. His first manufacturing assignment was assembling automotive parts at a local company along with other Mozaic workers for over six years.

Jim eventually learned that Mozaic’s Finger Lakes Textiles (FLT) division was looking for more employees to address increased demand on their product line. He wanted to try something a little different in manufacturing, so he applied for a position. Jim officially joined the team at Finger Lakes Textiles in February 2021, adapting quickly to the change in environment and co-workers. He proved to be a fast learner right out the gate learning multiple jobs that included sewing and trimming fleece and wool hats for government orders, as well as packaging and palletizing.

Jim is very passionate and proud of the work that he does. He is an incredibly conscientious employee, who is willing and eager to learn new tasks and change jobs.

When FLT added shovels (square- and round-point), snow shovels (scoop and pusher), rakes (bow and leaf), and ice/floor scrapers to its NYSID product offerings, an entirely new set of skills were needed. Jim was asked if he would be interested in assembling the tools, and he jumped at this latest opportunity, demonstrating his enthusiasm and desire to expand his knowledge and skills.

Jim learned to use the drill and rivet machine in record time, even finishing the products by adhering the NYSID identification labels, packing the tools in the proper boxes, and prepping for shipping. His ability to assemble each tool from start to finish, as he shares his infectious smile and silly humor is just one more reason Jim stands out.

When Jim is not working on tools, he is repacking toilet seat covers for NYSID orders, bundling or packaging government fleece and wool hats, always keeping quality and productivity as key factors.

He is an outstanding example to showcase because he has great attention to detail and commitment to excellence that is clearly reflected in his work. Jim’s consistent delivery of high-quality work significantly contributes to FLT’s project success. He appreciates the gratifying work, providing him with a place of purpose doing what he loves each and every day, all while earning a paycheck.

My paycheck helps me to… ...take care of my everyday needs.

When The Arc established its integrated shredding business, Jim was among the first trainees invited to join Southern Tier Industries (STI) as a shredding worker. He immediately found fulfillment in the work, valued his team dynamic, and cherished his interactions with others.

Transitioning from trainee to employee created fresh challenges for Jim. He was required to pass all mandatory trainings, which he did. Next, he had to obtain employee certifications, encompassing background checks, fingerprinting, drug screenings, and specific trainings for the National Association for Information Destruction. Jim approached these new challenges with his characteristic openness, friendliness and positive attitude.

Jim played a role during STI’s transition from manual processes to advanced machinery. Witnessing the evolution from small-scale equipment to a state-of-the-art $100,000 baling machine was a pivotal moment for Jim and the team. Despite the complexity and imposing nature of the new equipment, Jim remained undaunted. In fact, this transition marked a significant turning point in Jim’s performance, demonstrating his adaptability and resilience. From initially shredding 20 bins per shift (four hours), Jim’s dedication and skill propelled him to exceed daily shredding targets, now averaging between 30 and 40 bins per shift.

Jim’s success can be attributed to his continuous growth as a shredder. He actively seeks out tasks, ensuring productivity, even during machine maintenance downtime. He regularly executes baler startup procedures, and assists in securing completed bales, some weighing more than 2,000 pounds, showcasing his versatility and commitment to excellence.

Jim’s supervisor said, “Jim is an invaluable asset to our team. His impeccable attendance, strong work ethic, and friendly demeanor make my job easier. Jim consistently meets his daily targets and demonstrates remarkable respect toward his colleagues.”

Working in the shredding business has provided Jim with invaluable new experiences. Interacting regularly with walk-in customers was an unexpected new role. Many of these customers prefer to observe their documents being shredded, and Jim handles these interactions with professionalism and courtesy.

Anthony Parlopiano

The Arc GLOW Mt. Morris/Livingston County

Tony Parlopiano consistently demonstrates exceptional work ethic, dedication and versatility as a custodian on NYSID contracts at Arc GLOW. Tony has been part of the Arc janitorial team for more than 12 years, and has diligently maintained properties for the Office for People with Developmental Disabilities throughout Livingston County.

Tony has a calm demeanor and easily adapts to changes in his routine and tasks. He responds well to coaching and feedback from his supervisor, and has shown consistent improvement in his job performance based on this feedback. Over the years, Tony has shown tremendous growth in his skills and performance and has become a go-to person when it comes to the janitorial operation. He has excellent attendance and often takes on extra projects or specialty services such as floor buffing.

While life is not always easy for Tony, with his diagnoses of bipolar disorder, depression and ADD, he successfully practices several stress-reduction techniques to deal with daily barriers. Although not every day is perfect, Tony’s easygoing spirit allows him to approach each day to be the best version he can be, both on and off the work-site. He values his ability to maintain his position to make a living and pay his bills independently, which gives him a sense of self-accomplishment.

Judy Welch, the Senior Director of Day & Employment services at Arc GLOW explains, “While we wish we could clone him, there is only one Tony. He shows up as scheduled, does whatever he is asked to do without complaint, and is hard-working, easygoing and unassuming. He has had to work on adjusting to his limitations that could easily cause him to say he can’t do things, but he has a lot of resolve, and you shouldn’t mistake his quiet demeanor as not being strong. One of my favorite things about Tony is seeing him walking or biking to work to ensure he doesn’t miss his shift. When we had some unwarranted concerns at a site he was working at, he was the one worker who kept his cool and continued to do great work, setting a great example for his co-workers and staff.”

Tony is a true asset to the Arc GLOW team. His dedication, skills and positive attitude consistently elevate the work, and he is a role model for all employees.

If I didn’t have this job...

...I would be struggling to make a living and to pay my bills.

Scott Peterson

Green Facility Solution

Albany/Albany County

Scott Peterson has experienced substance use disorder throughout his life. He has since put the pieces of his life together, one step at a time.

In the past, Scott lacked faith in himself, choosing to live in the woods rather than face the pain of another failed detox. Throughout many years of a vicious cycle of drinking and stopping, Scott was unable to maintain sobriety, and his family relationships suffered as a result. He eventually attended AA meetings and connected with Second Chance Opportunities, a NYSID Member Agency, which provided a secure foundation to address his addiction.

The next step in Scott’s journey to stability was finding meaningful employment at Green Facility Solution, a NYSID Corporate Partner. Early in his employment, Scott preferred to work alone in production jobs. He has since learned to work with others on a custodial team. At the same time, he has kept his sights on his rehabilitation and has reaped the benefits of doing so.

Scott has become a leader due to his eagerness to learn and execute the tasks assigned to him. When a machine operator was needed for a large carpet cleaning, Scott easily completed the task. He is a well-respected and punctual employee, and rarely misses work. He is proud that he was able to make positive changes in his life. Scott is grateful for his job at Green Facility Solution which allows him to pay rent, buy groceries and purchase other life necessities.

Being nominated for this award makes me feel… ...appreciated.

Anthony Petrelli

Arc of Onondaga

Syracuse/Onondaga County

When Anthony graduated high school in 2021, he didn’t really have a plan. He and his parents met with an employment agency hoping to find somewhere he could make an impact. “He was told he wouldn’t be a good fit for employment,” said his mother, Michele.

Anthony and his family came to Arc of Onondaga’s Employment Options program in 2022, confused and disheartened. Usually, a community-based work assessment consists of 15-20 hours of different opportunities to see where an individual might find their fit, but Chris Simone, Employment Options Manager for Arc Contract Services and the Arc team pulled out all the stops, guiding Anthony through 60 hours of work try-outs. “Right away, I knew Anthony would be successful,” said Chris. “He performed well in whatever task we presented to him and had great family support. He would have been successful no matter where he landed, but we wanted to find the right fit.”

Anthony tried a good mix of jobs, from kitchen duties to stocking shelves. Then, in November 2022, NYSID procured a new contract with Onondaga County Resource Recovery Agency (ROCRRA) at its composting site, de-packaging food from containers so it could be recycled and used for compost and mulch. Anthony found his perfect fit. “It gives me experience, and changes every day. It is my own job, separate from the rest of my family,” he said. One day Anthony is pouring out spaghetti sauce from jars, and the next day he is opening cereal boxes or separating produce, and even meat.

“Recycling can be a dirty job and you never know what you might be walking into for the day, but Anthony enjoys it,” said Jim Pitts, Enclaves Manager for Arc Contract Services. Anthony has never called in sick or missed a day. When there is no food to be de-packaged, he sweeps the floors and cleans the work area. “Anthony is an essential part of the de-packaging program,” said Maria Bianchetti, Recycling Operations Manager at OCRRA. “He is a pleasure to work with, and when he is in the barn working, he improves everyone’s spirits.”

Being at the OCRRA site since the beginning of its contract with NYSID has been a rewarding experience for Anthony, his family, and OCRRA. “He’s given 100% since day one,” said Steve Ludwig, Operations Manager for Commercial Contracts at Arc. “The guys at OCRRA are great to work with. They’re accepting and welcoming, and Anthony needs minimal supervision on site. He’s filling a need and doing a great job. He is a part of their team, so much so that they even included him in their informational video.”

When not working, Anthony enjoys family time and weekly trips to Barnes & Noble with his friend, Dan. He says he is proud of his job and the work he does. He likes earning his own money and feels good when he can buy books and things for himself, and give gifts for special occasions like graduations and weddings.

If I didn’t have this job...

...I would be sad. I like working at OCCRA.

Timothy Pitcher

Katapult Solutions, LLC

Syracuse/Onondaga County

Tim initially came to Katapult Solutions as a paid intern from Exceptional Family Resources (EFR), during which he worked fully supervised by an EFR coach. It wasn’t long before Katapult management knew that Tim was a great asset to the company, and he was offered a permanent scanner operator/document indexer position. Tim has come to greatly enjoy his duties, as they allow him to work independently, and the flexible schedule is accommodating to his needs. He likes that he can show up for work, do his part, and go home at the end of the day knowing he’s worked hard. He appreciates that this job requires no interaction with the public, allowing him to focus on the task he’s been given that day.

Tim demonstrates a passion for excellence, and he is known for going above and beyond to ensure accuracy and quality. He arrives early for work daily, and never leaves without ensuring his workstation is properly cleaned for the next day, and that his supervisors know he’s leaving. He rarely misses a day of work, and when a schedule conflict arises, he makes sure to arrange to make up the day.

Tim can always be trusted to follow all company policies to a tee. He believes in accountability, and will hold others around him to that standard as well.

While Tim does not come off as especially social in the workplace (as he believes it to be a place for work and not socialization), he is kind and polite and gets along well with all of his colleagues and supervisors. He is known for being straightforward about what he needs help with, and doesn’t hesitate to alert someone when a situation arises.

During his free time, Tim enjoys watching television, movies and sports, as well as playing games. His keen eye for detail can catch any bad call made by the referee, which is why, when prompted, he thought he might be suited for a career in commentary and/or critique.

Being nominated for this award makes me feel... ...so proud.

Bruce Ribeiro

Maryhaven Center of Hope

Port Jefferson Station/Suffolk County

Bruce Ribeiro has worked in Maryhaven’s Integrated Business Center for more than six years. He currently spends most of his time shredding various medical and court documents for government and other customers, loading shredded materials into a compactor for baling. It’s an important job, especially due to today’s current worries with identity theft on the rise.

Bruce likes to make sure his work is done well and approaches it with a professional attitude. He understands that all documents are to be kept confidential and is serious about meeting this requirement. He excels at making sure his work area is clean and neat.

When Bruce is not working, he enjoys being part of the Suffolk Bike Riders Association. He recently rode with a group of about 90 people from Babylon to Montauk, a ride of 100 miles! The group has also done three-day rides in Connecticut, Maryland and Amherst, NY. The group stayed at various colleges and were provided with food and lodging. He has been with this group since 1982 and feels it has been a great way to meet people, get exercise and see the country.

Bruce feels that working at Maryhaven has helped him to better communicate with others and assist him to understand how to better navigate his work and personal lives. He is happy and proud that his hard work has been recognized. His paycheck helps him to pay his bills and maintain his own transportation.

I like my job because…

...the work is challenging and I enjoy working with my staff and co-workers.

Ryan Richardson

The Arc Otsego

Oneonta/Otsego County

Hard-working, dependable, highly motivated, and helpful describe Ryan Richardson, who works at Creekside Industries, a division of The Arc Otsego. Ryan started working there in June of 2013, and he quickly became recognized as someone who could work on almost any job. In January 2015, Ryan was promoted to work on the NYSID production line, where he has worked ever since. Ryan has thrived in the fast-paced environment these products offer, which is undoubtedly part of the reason working on the NYSID line is his favorite job at Creekside. His supervisor shared that, “Ryan is our most versatile employee on the line; he can do it all, from start to finish.”

Ryan is a man of few words and struggles to communicate verbally, but that doesn’t stop him from learning new skills and excelling at his job. When asked about his job, Ryan shared that he likes to be busy, and he likes to be helpful. His favorite job is to pack boxes of diapers. He doesn’t like to miss work or be late, even coming in on snowy days when many other people stay home.

Ryan’s supervisor jokes that Ryan could supervise the NYSID production line. Thinking back to when she first started, she shared how knowledgeable and helpful Ryan was. He knows by heart all the NYSID product numbers and the pallet configurations for each product, often writing the pallet configuration on the white board as a visual aide for his co-workers. When a product change happens, Ryan makes sure everyone has the correct barcode labels, and ensures that pallets are going out correctly. He regularly identifies errors and points them out to the supervisor, and then he jumps in to fix what he can.

Ryan’s supervisor also praises his leadership skills, commenting that he is observant and can readily discern if a peer is having difficulty with a task. He seems to harbor a special sensitivity for “the underdog” and will approach staff to share his observations. When pallets become too tall for some of his shorter co-workers, Ryan jumps in to help. He values the friendships he has developed while working at Creekside, and he truly cares about those he works with each day. In addition to his exemplary work skills, Ryan has also improved his ability to communicate by using gestures, paper and pen, and even his cell phone as a communication device.

Ryan’s paycheck is very important to him; he uses the money he earns to go to camp several times each year, and to support his love of Dunkin’ Donuts coffee. He would like to earn a driver’s license in the future. When asked about his dream job, Ryan pointed to the NYSID production line with a big smile.

If I didn’t have this job, I would be...

...sad. I would feel unproductive, and I wouldn’t be able to see my work friends.

Tylisha Richardson

Fedcap Rehabilitation Services

Manhattan/New York County

“Life kept knocking me down, but the job at Fedcap was my rainbow after the storm,” said Tylisha Richardson.

Tylisha’s personal journey has been anything but easy. As the middle child in a family of seven siblings, she often felt like it was her against the world. Growing up on Staten Island, she struggled in school and was diagnosed with a learning disability in high school. Despite her challenges, Tylisha worked hard to earn her diploma. However, as a special education student, she was discouraged from pursuing a college education.

Referred by her high school to vocational training at the Fedcap Career Design School (CDS) in 2014, Tylisha enrolled while working as a cashier at CVS. Yet again, life threw her a curveball. “I lost my job at CVS for using my employee discount to help a customer buy formula for her infant. I was a young adult in a big world, and suddenly jobless,” Tylisha shared. Fortunately, she had just completed the CDS training program, and soon secured a Fedcap custodial position at Penn Station.

Accepting the job at Penn Station marked a turning point for Tylisha. She gained self-confidence, developed a positive outlook, and started taking control of her life. Shortly after beginning the job, she moved out of her mother’s house, rented her own apartment, and welcomed her first child the following year.

In 2016, Tylisha was transferred to MTA headquarters at 130 Livingston Street in Brooklyn, where she has thrived for the past eight years. She has honed her time management skills, become more self-disciplined, and established herself as a smart and nurturing team player. John Savelli, Fedcap’s Facilities Manager at 130 Livingston Street offered high praise. “Tylisha is always striving to improve herself and readily helps her co-workers. She adapts quickly: tell her once and she knows what to do,” he said.

Tylisha’s leadership skills have also flourished. Fabio Lopez, Fedcap Area Manager noted, “Tylisha has shown incredible resilience and motivation. She encourages her peers daily.”

Over the past several years, Tylisha achieved a dream many said was impossible. While working full-time, she enrolled in a degree program at Berkeley College and graduated with a BS in criminal justice in 2021. Now a single mother of two, with her second daughter born last year, Tylisha plans to start her MS degree at Monroe College this September. She aspires to become a New York City court officer.

Reflecting on her journey, Tylisha said, “Working at Fedcap, I’ve learned discipline and patience. I’ve learned never to give up and to train my mind to think positively. If you think you can do it, then guess what? You can! Just don’t give up!”

Being nominated for this award makes me feel…

Crysti Santaski

SecureScan

Albany/Albany County

Crysti Santaski came to SecureScan in January 2023 after overcoming a battle with addiction. This was a fight that took her all the way to Syracuse for recovery, away from her family and children. It was one of the most difficult things that Crysti had ever encountered, especially being separated from her children. This difficult sacrifice would begin a new outlook on life for Crysti, one where she felt more confidence and control of her life than ever before.

Through determination and hard work, Crysti has become a role model for her children and those around her. Today, she is the night manager of the scanning and prep department at SecureScan, where she supervises 29 people. Crysti initially started as a scanning and prep operator. Right away, it was evident that she had a great work ethic, attention to detail, and a drive to learn new things. It was obvious that she cared about what she was doing and took great pride in her work. Crysti quickly learned new tasks and earned the respect of everyone around her. Her communication skills and patience demonstrated that she would be an excellent supervisor, where she truly excels.

Crysti loves teaching people new things and meeting new people. Being a manager motivates her to help other people learn and make positive changes in their lives. She also appreciates knowing that her work is making things easier for NYS government customers, giving them the ability to organize their information and have easier access to their files.

Since winning her battle with addiction and starting at SecureScan, Crysti’s life is better than ever. She has rebuilt the relationships with her children that she lost through addiction. She is living with her daughter, and has a wonderful relationship with her older son once again. Crysti’s schedule allows her to have every Friday off, a day that she spends with her daughter. She cherishes being with her children, the two people for whom she knew she needed to make changes in her life. Her daughter now has a built-in best friend, one who she can look up to for her determination and hard work. Her family now understands the strength that it takes to overcome the battles that Crysti has in her past.

Crysti is an excellent example of how a person can transform their life when given the chance to create positive change. She has overcome many obstacles and come out on top.

Tracy Schmidtka

The Arc of Madison Cortland

Oneida/Madison County

Tracy Schmidtka is a valued employee of the integrated business at Alternatives Industry/Lojo Technology, the industrial division of Arc Madison Cortland. When Tracy came to work in November 2007, her initial interests were purely social, but she quickly learned that working hard has its rewards. It did not take long for staff to realize that Tracy had work abilities that involved multi-task operations, and that she could be successful if she applied herself.

Tracy is usually very positive, and is described by supervisors as a production worker who understands the work flow and can carry out the job duties independently. She follows instructions, she is motivated, she usually concentrates on her tasks, she is punctual, her work quality is good, and she has the ability to identify and cope with work problems. Tracy has learned many new jobs and has worked on the margarine repackaging and reusable lunch bags contracts, as well as the NYS Police car graphics. She is a good role model for her peers who can identify quality issues and then show her peers a better way to increase production.

Tracy likes to shop and travel, and puts her paycheck to good use. Her most recent trip was a day spa in Pennsylvania, where she enjoyed being pampered. She hopes to one day work with animals or the elderly. Many customers remember Tracy’s friendly and outgoing nature, and often mention her by name.

Tracy is an active member of the Madison County Motivators, Arc Advocates and Ambassadors committee. She educates her peers on ways to self-advocate and helps educate the local community about The Arc of Madison Cortland.

Tracy has overcome many personal struggles, including the loss of her mother to a car accident in 2023. While this may have devastated many, she continues to strive for self-improvement, accepts her limitations, and recognizes her many strengths.

Howard Snyder

Gateway Hudson Valley Kingston/Ulster County

You know the work day has officially started at Gateway when you are on the receiving end of Howard Snyder’s hearty and cheerful, “Good Morning!” Luckily for the Gateway workplace, Howard has started his mornings like this for the past 20 years.

Howard started his Gateway career after graduating high school. He acknowledges that he struggled academically and socially in school due to learning disabilities, and was unsure of his career path. Howard initially performed assembly tasks in the existing sheltered work center. While he had a knack for the work, he said it left him feeling unfulfilled. Howard had an interest and passion for cleaning, and liked the sense of accomplishment he got upon completing those cleaning tasks. This led to Howard’s decision to enroll in Gateway’s Housekeeping Cleaning Enclave, which provided him with the experience of cleaning for various contracts and vendors in the community.

Howard received numerous compliments from the vendors for his efforts and affability. In 2017, he applied for a staff position with Gateway’s housekeeping department. With assistance from his vocational supports, Howard seized this opportunity and was hired part-time. He quickly learned how to take public transportation to and from work. Howard started off cleaning on-site at Gateway where it quickly became evident that his positive attitude, strong work ethic and efficient cleaning techniques would make him a perfect candidate for the NYS Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) and Department of Conservation’s (DEC) Nory Point cleaning contracts.

Howard is proud to work on these prestigious NYSID contracts and earn prevailing wage, and their missions align with his desire to help protect our environment. As Howard’s self-confidence and sense of agency have increased over time, he now helps train new staff, interacts effortlessly with his cohorts and supervisory staff, and shares his ideas with staff on how to improve work methods.

Howard is an integral part and a senior member of the custom cleaning department. His attention to detail, reliability and pleasant attitude continue to impress his co-workers, supervisors and contract vendors. Due to the enhanced wages that the NYSID contracts pay, Howard lives solely on the wages that he earns. Howard takes great pride in being able to financially contribute to his household, helping to pay for bills, food and home maintenance. His wages also give him the opportunity to take his fiancée out, pay for his own phone and to purchase clothes, movies and games. Howard’s hard work and paychecks have provided him the opportunity to become more independent, self-reliant and more involved and integrated in his community.

I like my job because…

...I have a passion for cleaning and think I’m pretty good at it. I feel I work in a very supportive and fun environment.

Sandra Spady

Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Albany Albany/Albany County

Sandra has been employed at the Capital District Psychiatric Center on a NYSID contract since 2017. She initially faced significant challenges with anger management, often triggered by disagreements or misunderstandings with co-workers. Her aggressive outbursts led to her being terminated. However, Sandra was rehired after demonstrating improved anger management and the ability to maintain positive relationships with her colleagues. Her supervisor recognized her efforts to present herself professionally.

Sandra is in recovery from alcoholism. For her, recovery required reaching rock bottom, the point where the severity of her addiction impacted her physically, mentally, morally, and spiritually. After her mother’s death in 2015, Sandra’s addiction worsened, resulting in the loss of her housing and the custody of her eight children, who went to live with family members. Despite these challenges, Sandra proudly states that she has since rebuilt relationships with her children and family. She has been sober for eight years and credits Catholic Charities, Green Facility Solution and NYSID for providing the support necessary to maintain sobriety and manage her anger issues.

Starting as a part-time evening worker, Sandra was promoted to a full-time day shift in 2019. Today, Sandra takes life more seriously and prioritizes self-care. She is in a stable work environment where her supervisors listen and understand her. This environment has fostered honesty and openness, helping Sandra build character and credibility. Now a trainer for new employees, her supervisor remarked, “Sandra helps out whenever she can and is very dependable and reliable. She is an excellent trainer and a role model to new hires.”

Through Catholic Charities’ No Wrong Door approach, Sandra received services tailored to her short- and long-term needs. She acknowledges that without NYSID employment opportunities, maintaining her sobriety would have been difficult. “A lot of jobs don’t pay well, but with NYSID, I can earn a decent living and contribute back to the community,” she said.

“Sobriety works best when a person can surround themselves with other sober people who are working toward a better life, and NYSID gives me the opportunity for a better life,” Sandra said. Her supervisor and mentor, Miss Curtis, highlights Sandra’s overlooked strengths and talents, including her motivation to get the job done. Sandra has found positive ways to channel her anger, enhancing her emotional well-being, contributing to her personal growth, and improving her workplace relationships. At the Capital District Psychiatric Center, her work is highly valued, and she is held in high regard by everyone in the building.

Being nominated for this award makes me feel...

...honored that I have been given the opportunity to overcome the obstacles in my life.

Michael Sterling

Michael Sterling is a reserved, respectful young man who once struggled to find his employment fit in his community.

Mike joined the Arc Herkimer team in November 2022 at its Ilion Mall location working on commercial fulfillment contract three days per week. When the contract moved over to the Herkimer Industries site, Mike moved with the contract and proved to be the best worker on the operation. He also filled in on other production lines as needed.

Proving his versatility once again, Mike increased his schedule to four days a week at this point and returned to the Ilion Mall production center. He recently learned to operate a sewing machine, where he works on important NYSID contracts for the NYS State Police trousers, boots and field blouses, and DEC and Park Police apparel products.

Mike eagerly shared that his Herkimer job is the best place where he has worked. He tried other services that help people only to leave feeling underserved and dismissed. His paycheck helps him live independently and take care of his cat. Mike’s pride in his performance makes him feel like he has accomplished something meaningful.

I like my job because…

...Arc Herkimer is the best place I have ever worked.

Alexei Studenka

Community, Work & Independence, Inc.

Queensbury/Warren County

Alexei began working with Competitive Edge, a division of Community, Work & Independence, Inc. (CWI), in 2017, first attending a pre-vocational program to build his employment skills. Although he knew very little about the workforce, he had a positive, upbeat attitude, and was willing to learn – and that is just what he did.

Alexei took in the information and skills that were taught and was referred for supported employment services in 2018. This is when Alexei started in his position with the contracted cleaning crew. At first, Alexei will tell you that he struggled to even hold a broom and was unsure of how to sweep floors, but he was determined to try. With staff support and a strong desire to develop his skills, Alexei dedicated himself to learning the necessary tasks and quickly became a valued member of the contracted cleaning crew. He continued working throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, following established safety/sanitization guidelines, and maintained his positive, upbeat attitude throughout this difficult time.

Alexei eventually expressed a desire to work more and to explore the employment world more, including community employment, working with his employment staff to determine where he wanted to work/what he wanted to do. He enthusiastically started on his quest for community employment with an interview at Market 32 as a front-end associate, where he began working part-time in August 2022. Alexei has been able to maintain both his position with the contracted cleaning crew and Market 32.

When developing the tissue products partnership between CWI, Morcon Tissue and NYSID, many of the Competitive Edge staff thought this would be a great opportunity for Alexei to expand his skill set and learn something new. He eagerly embarked on this journey and has quickly become a valuable member of the contracted worksite at the Morcon location. This involves wrapping/stacking pallets, tailing machines and running bailors, all of which Alexei completes with an incredible smile on his face.

Alexei has dealt with adversity throughout his life without letting it get him down. He does not allow negativity to define him, and uses it as motivation to continue to learn and grow. Alexei’s smile is contagious, as is his work ethic.

Being nominated for this award makes me feel…
...great! I’m happy and excited because of all the hard work I have put in.

Roy Sullivan

Jawonio

New City/Rockland County

Roy Sullivan remembers struggling in school in his native Kingston, Jamaica from an early age. Grade after grade, he fell behind. His good behavior in class masked his frustrations with math, reading comprehension and other areas where his classmates excelled. “I’m not as smart as the other kids,” Roy thought, unaware that he had a learning disability.

When Roy’s family emigrated to New York City in the 1970s, he was thrust into a new language, educational system and culture, and struggled to understand and to be understood. Finally, a 7th-grade school counselor recommended that Roy be evaluated, and the tests revealed his learning disability.

Roy now faced new hurdles of managing and overcoming his disability. With the help of ACCES-VR and vocational training provided by Worklink, he received the support and skills to become more independent. When Jawonio acquired Worklink more than 20 years ago, Roy was hired as a commercial cleaner and has since blossomed. Developing critical social, communication and vocational skills, he has become a model employee.

Roy’s work performance is truly exemplary. His ability to seamlessly balance multiple worksite locations demonstrates a deep understanding of each facility’s unique needs, earning him the trust of management and co-workers alike. Roy extends a helping hand to new hires, cultivating a supportive work environment. His professionalism and punctuality are models for his colleagues, and he consistently presents himself with a warm, welcoming smile and demeanor. His exemplary work ethic and positive attitude significantly contribute to the Jawonio Cleaning Company’s culture.

Supervisor Gary Rao notes Roy’s continuous growth, praising his reliability and exceptional performance across the Department of Environmental Protection, the White Plains Courthouse, and the Fire Training Center. “I am proud to say, I have had the pleasure of personally working with Roy since 2014, and I have grown very fond of him. He always sets an example for the people around him of how to operate while on the job with his professionalism and hard-work ethic. Everyone in each building that Roy services is always happy with the cleanliness of the site and the friendliness of Roy himself. Roy has worked extremely hard for many years and deserves recognition for the quality of work that he performs,” Gary said.

Whether voluntarily attending workshops to enhance his skills or seeking out mentorship opportunities, Roy continues to have a thirst for knowledge. His investment in himself has paid off, as he now lives independently in his own apartment. Roy’s journey is a powerful reminder and testament to the transformative power of resilience as well as the positive ripple effect it can have on other people and the greater culture of a business.

If I didn’t have this job...

...I would need help from Social Services and would also need to find another job.

Caleb Thomas

Spectrum Designs

Port Washington/Nassau County

Caleb Thomas has a great attitude, is a team player, and is kind to everyone with whom he works at Spectrum Design’s Pleasantville location in Westchester County.

Initially beginning in screen-printing, where his height is a strength in operating the automatic, Caleb earned the opportunity to assist in embroidery, and quickly rose to the occasion. He has taken on a leadership role within the department and acts as a role model to volunteers and/or employees learning from the beginning. Caleb assists with training new colleagues and is always the first to answer a question or share a tip for success. He has become knowledgeable about the embroidery machinery and is excited to learn how to use any new machine. He has assisted in operations – no task is too big or too small – and he is always ready to learn or try something new.

Caleb is kind, warm, friendly, and always eager to help. His job gives him purpose and he appreciates being recognized for how well he does it. “I feel fulfilled in my role as senior production assistant,” he said.

On a personal note, Caleb has been battling serious health issues over the last year, frequently missing work due to ongoing medical appointments. His positive attitude is absolutely amazing. He never complains, always wants to return to work right away, and always hopes for the best outcome. Caleb has been open and honest, and shared candidly with his employer, allowing Spectrum’s team to cheer him on through his journey to remission and recovery.

Caleb is an inspiration to everyone at Spectrum Designs, from his colleagues all the way to the executive team. He is a delight in the Pleasantville shop which would truly be lost without him.

I like my job because…

...it gives me something important to do. My passion is helping people.

Harlan Ward

One step at a time has been Harlan’s approach to his employment and his life. After graduating high school in 2005, with little to no family support, Harlan took an entry-level position at GSG Vincent, a furniture restoration company that employed individuals with disabilities who were supported by JM Murray’s supported employment division. He later joined an enclave of JM Murray employees who provided sorting labor to the Cortland County Recycling Center. In 2012, he began working for JM Murray’s custodial department on its rest area team, where he continues to flourish.

Rewarding employment helped Harlan experience economic freedom for probably the first time in his life. He saved to purchase a bike, which he rode until he saved enough money to purchase a used car. He continued to save money to reach his next goal, purchasing a new car. “It was always my goal to buy my own car, and I did it. I purchased a new Hyundai in 2020,” he said. Harlan also used this methodical approach to purchase a starter home, and then a better home where he lives with his wife. “This was not my childhood life. I have obtained a lifestyle I only could dream about as a child,” he said.

Harlan enjoys working for JM Murray where he is supported as an individual with disabilities. He previously held in his emotions until he blew up. Now he is permitted and encouraged to remove himself from stressful situations to reflect on situations and react in a professional, appropriate manner. Realizing that he is not the only one on the job and needs to consider others as well, Harlan is now an exemplary team player. “I like myself more; I am a better husband, son and community member,” he said.

Harlan is sure that if he didn’t have this job, he would still be relying on social service benefits, something he has worked hard to avoid. “I don’t want to be in that system. I want to be my own man and support my wife. I am a self-made man because JM Murray gave me the opportunity to be successful,” he said.

Harlan enjoys purchasing and maintaining mechanical tools, performing all work on his vehicle and house. Last year, he was able to update and repair his bathroom with the assistance of a fellow employee who has known him since 2005.

In Harlan’s words: “JM Murray has given me confidence in my professional and personal life. I feel like I am part of something bigger that improves our community and New York State. I look forward to coming to work at the rest area, and I take extreme pride in keeping the property welcoming for travelers and keeping the lawn looking nice. I want to continue my employment with JM Murray. I don’t think the quality of life I have achieved would have been possible anywhere else.”

I like my job because...

...I do not feel like a number here. I am human, and I want to be treated this way.

Joseph White

Rehabilitation Support Services

Guilderland/Albany County

Joe is a charismatic person with a positive outlook on life. He is always in a good mood and gets along well with everyone. Joe makes people smile, even when they are having an off day. He is a bit of a jokester and loves to dance and sing. Joe possesses the unique ability to put everyone around him in a good mood. Even on his own off days, he always has a smile for everyone.

When Joe started his employment with Rehabilitation Support Services’ (RSS) property maintenance division in September 2020, he had no experience in landscaping. He had never driven a truck, let alone a one-ton dump truck. He didn’t know how to operate weed whackers, leaf blowers, hedge trimmers, or a push mower. Joe has come a long way since then, and can now operate all landscaping equipment with precision and skill. He has learned to safely drive many different types of vehicles, and regularly transports his co-workers to job sites.

Joe is detail-oriented in his assigned work tasks. He knows what needs to be done at every property, and has evolved into one of the preferred hedge trimmers who checks and double checks his work quality. Joe’s personality and skill make him an ideal employee to pair up with a new crew member, as he will demonstrate what it takes to do the job properly. He enjoys sharing his knowledge and skills related to the equipment required for that specific job.

Joe shows up on time with an enthusiastic attitude and prepared for the day’s work. He greets everyone, and then starts to load the trucks and trailers with the equipment needed for the day. It doesn’t matter what task he is assigned – he completes it with professionalism and in a timely manner.

Over four years of employment, Joe has reached many goals that he set for himself, including purchasing a new dependable vehicle to get back and forth to work. He continues to set and reach more goals as time goes by. Joe has also been attending college for accounting, while still working all his scheduled shifts.

If I didn’t have this job…

...I wouldn’t be able to help support my kids and family. I wouldn’t have a car and would most likely be homeless.

Navree Woods-Turner

Navree Woods-Turner was eager to return to the workforce in 2016, but after more than six years of being home raising her family, she wasn’t certain that employers would want her. Despite having an associate degree in business management from a business school in Albany, Navree had little work history or confidence in her abilities.

“I was very apprehensive. I am an African American woman with a family, and a woman with a disability,” she said. Navree worried that employers would think her skill set was outdated and that she had been out of the workforce too long. She did not know how to make the first contact with employers, and was unsure that she could meet the challenge of a working world that had changed while she was home raising her two sons.

Navree eventually took a leap of faith and attended a local job fair, mostly to seek employment for her sons, but also armed with her own resume, just in case. The minute she walked into the fair, she was asked if she wanted her resume scanned. A representative from eBizDocs suggested that Navree walk around with her sons, and then come back to talk about employment opportunities for her. eBizDocs is a document scanning and document management business which includes individuals of diverse abilities on its team. Navree was encouraged to work on her keyboarding skills for a few days, and then come in for an interview.

Navree was encouraged during the screening process to learn that her skills were above and beyond the minimum requirements – and by the next day, she received the good news that she was hired as an auditor. She was also crossed-trained for indexing (data entry), created spreadsheets, and performed scanning, before moving into quality assurance.

Life can be full of challenges and hurdles. When Navree’s husband needed a kidney transplant a short time later, eBiz made accommodations for her schedule. As things improved at home, Navree was offered the team leader position for a new contract. “In what seemed a very short period, I had gone from having no vision for myself and not being sure of myself, to being encouraged, mentored and recognized for my skills and abilities,” she said. The support of her employer also helped Navree through her own health issues in 2020.

Navree’s adaptability for learning new things and excelling in those areas clearly identified her as a natural leader. Today, she is the team leader for the document preparation area, the largest team at eBiz, and at the same time, she performs quality assurance on scanned batches. Navree is recognized as a role model to her work team, as well as to her family for her enthusiasm, critical thinking, time management, and communication skills. From scant work history to employment success, Navree is a rock star!

I like my job because...

...everyone is treated as an individual. What is important is the effort you put into the job and working together to get the job done.

Daniel Zinke

Daniel (Danny) Zinke brings a host of assets to the AHRC Landscaping Division where he has worked for 10 years. He is enthusiastic, hard-working and dedicated, and demonstrates a strong work ethic. Danny works on the grounds of the NYS Department of Labor as well as residential and business properties. He takes great pride in his work and goes above and beyond his assigned work responsibilities. Danny enthusiastically takes on extra tasks and is eager to learn new skills that enable him to assist his supervisor beyond the basics of landscaping.

Danny is enthusiastic to get to work each day, so he gets up early and walks to the train station, takes the Long Island Railroad a few stops, and then walks to AHRC Nassau’s Freeport facility to prepare the trucks and tools with his team before heading out on the route. His day ends when the route is finished, and he travels back to the landscaping facility. His work ethic is apparent, and he is committed to getting the jobs done.

The landscaping supervisor has expressed his appreciation and admiration for Danny’s diligence and flexibility. It has even been suggested that he could work as a lead in the future, as Danny has made an extra effort to learn and grow. For example, he has learned how to load and unload the ride-on mowers on and off the trailers. Danny has also learned how to handle the glitches and quirkiness of some of the equipment, and assists in keeping things running.

Danny gets along well with his co-workers and brings some comedy to the day. He is funny and enjoys laughing and making others laugh as well. When Danny has a large area to mow, he coordinates with a co-worker, and they ride in tandem to overlap and get the work done more efficiently than working alone. For many, such a physical workday in the elements would be difficult to endure, but Danny loves it. His work brings him tremendous pleasure, and he is proud of his accomplishments throughout the day and over the years. Employment has helped Danny become self-reliant by learning to utilize public transportation to meet his crew every day. He has become a better self-advocate and interacts with others professionally and effectively.

Danny is successful thanks to the opportunity for employment provided by organizations which truly benefit people with disabilities. His employment provides him with a strong sense of purpose and allows him to contribute meaningfully to his community.

My dream job would be…
...the job I am doing!
