Dear Member Agencies, Corporate Partners and Supporters:

It has been my privilege to have served as Chair of NYSID’s Board of Directors for the past three years. I’m proud to have contributed to NYSID’s legacy of work­place success for individuals with disabilities.

My tenure began during a time of unusual challenges to a secure livelihood for these individuals working on NYSID contracts. It concludes on a high note as nearly 5,000 workers earned a record $80 million in NYSID’s 48th year of operation.

Team NYSID celebrated Governor Hochul’s signing of the New York State Finance Law 162 Modernization Bill in October 2022, and its promise of increased employment potential in fulfillment of the American Dream.

NYSID advanced Member Agencies’ businesses in new directions in Fiscal Year 2023, including launching new commodities that emphasize today’s customer needs.

The modernization also helped to expand NYSID’s temporary personnel and document imaging work opportunities, contri­buting toward a seven percent increase in competitive integrated employment.

It is imperative that all NYSID stakeholders continue to discover new business initiatives and measures that strengthen the Preferred Source Program so that every individual who wants to work has the opportunity.

As I now step into my role as Past Chair, I give my full support to our new Chair, Patrick Bardsley, Co-Founder & CEO of Spectrum Designs Foundation, and the NYSID team led by Maureen O’Brien.

Together, Team NYSID will continue its path forward in making employment in New York State inclusive for all.

When I stepped into my NYSID role five years ago, I asked each of you to trust that change would create transformational impact. Although not always easy, strong organizations and individuals embrace innovation, when needed, over the status quo.

We saw substantive organizational change in 2019, and again in 2023, we have focused on additional innovations.

NYSID implemented a new three-year strategic plan in January, focusing on three pillars: Improving Operations Management, Expanding Sales and Marketing, and Strengthening Advocacy and Government Relations.

Post-pandemic business is improving, creating more than 350 new jobs this year. Of the 6,348 jobs on 2023 NYSID contracts, 4,794 were competitive integrated employment opportunities for individuals with disabilities.

We continue to assist our Members with business transformation, awarding $73,000 in Matching Grants this past year.

We increased our engagement with the NYS Association of Counties and The Arc New York.

On the advocacy front, NYSID partnered with the NY Alliance for Inclusion & Innovation on their National Expansion of Employment Opportunities Network working group. Together, we commissioned the Rockefeller Institute of Government to study Navigating the Benefits Cliff and the role it plays in the decisions people with disabilities make regarding employment.

We worked closely with OPWDD on a training program for businesses that participate in the Employability Pledge, and sponsored the Developmental Disabilities Planning Council’s Willowbrook Documentary event, a powerful evening that showcased how far disability inclusion has come.

NYSID engaged with the team from Transitions which introduces young adults with learning differences to the world of work. Through this program, we brought on several neuro-diverse interns.

I know that a leader is only as good as her people, and the NYSID team continues to work tirelessly aligned to our mission, evidenced by the honor of being named a 2023 Times Union Top Workplace.

I’m grateful for the opportunity to have worked alongside leaders like Stanfort Perry and Kevin Crosley in transforming our organization and our industry.

COMMUNITY NYSID’s annual community support initiative provides financial assistance to non-profits that share our mission, and additional organizations that enrich NYS communities.

Here are some of the variety of causes supported in Fiscal Year 2023: • Hill & Markes Backpack Giveback | Montgomery County • Rochester Community Inclusive Rowing | Monroe County • Special Olympics New York | Statewide Games: Syracuse, Glens Falls, Ithaca • Stephen Siller Tunnel To Tower 5k: Central NY | Oneida County • $100k in charitable contributions dispersed • 25 non-profit organizations impacted • 700 staff volunteer hours served

NYSID supported the groundbreaking of the Where Angels Play/Charlie’s Playground at an Albany County elementary school to promote accessible fun for all ages.

Team NYSID tennis pros served up their time in support of tennis skills and equipment for inner city youth.

Painting barns at Double H Ranch in Warren County contributed to the United Way of the Capital Region’s annual “518 Day” of service.

20 YEARS OF OUTSTANDING PERFORMANCE In 2023, NYSID’s annual Outstanding Performance Awards Program marked its 20th year of recognizing the power of work. The awards are a unique showcase for acknowledging those who have achieved personal success and meaningful employment, affirming NYSID’s mission and influence.

We are proud to have celebrated 1,014 “Outstanding Performers” since 2004, and look forward to continuing this impact on those to come.

Of the 50 nominees in 2023, two individuals were honored at NYSID’s Annual Meeting on October 18, 2023.

Logan Nye defines a success story in every way as an engaged member of the team creating custom apparel at the Arc Allegany-Steuben’s Stitched Ink affirmative business. He smiles his way through learning new steps in the process, gaining independence through his paycheck.

He painstakingly learned to drive and uses his earnings to maintain a reliable vehicle so that he can get to work on his own.

Elisabeth Yong overcame the stigma of mental health and learning disabilities to find employment success at GoodTemps, the temporary staffing division of Goodwill Industries of Greater NY/Northern NJ. Elisabeth went from working one day per work and living at home, dependent on her parents, to successful GoodTemps placements that led her to a permanent data entry job. She now shares an apartment and enjoys the Brooklyn social scene with friends, where she loves shopping local.

INTEGRITY A NYSID Champion prioritizes the mission of our organization and actively drives it forward.

Kevin Crosley, CEO at Arc Herkimer, has been a NYSID Champion throughout a career that has spanned four decades and impacted tens of thousands of lives. Working in the disability support industry, from selling Preferred Source products to leading organizations through changing times, is a reflection of Kevin’s personal and professional values.

Taking on the Arc Herkimer CEO role in 2005, Kevin established innovative programs that reinforced his building of an inclusive community. He also directed the growth of Herkimer Industries’ NYSID products portfolio to meet today’s customer needs.

Kevin was elected to NYSID’s Board of Directors in 2005 not only for his respected industry experience but his business vision. Succeeding to the Chair position in 2018, he identified the need for new approaches, including expanding into advocacy and leading from a fresh perspective. He holds the distinction of being the longest-serving member of NYSID’s Board of Directors.

PARTNERSHIP CUSTOMER OF THE YEAR

NYS Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance The NYS Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance (OTDA) oversees a range of programs providing economic support to vulnerable New Yorkers, including those with disabilities. Through public assistance grants, food insecurity measures and other initiatives, OTDA positively impacts quality of life in our state.

Its mission of service aligns with purchasing NYSID products and services to improve livelihoods for New Yorkers with disabilities through gainful employment. A long-standing collaboration with the mail fulfillment business operated by Center for Disability Services (CFDS) showcases this relationship in a meaningful way.

OTDA issues up to 12 million mandatory notices to program recipients each year, requiring an experienced vendor that can meet this volume and security. More than 50 CFDS workers are committed to high-quality performance and timeliness in satisfying this need.

Individuals work in various jobs within the mail fulfillment center, from high-speed postal equipment to manual sorting. “I am willing to do many different tasks,” said Christina, a member of the team. “I am an awesome worker, too.”

STABILITY Individuals Shine as Employees of the Year

Providing employment opportunities for job seekers with barriers to employment, and creating a culture of inclusion, helps these individuals find a pathway to security. Stability in employment positions them to develop top-notch skills and strong work ethics to learn, grow and reach financial security.

Both of NYSID’s 2023 Employees of the Year personify the impact of personal and professional success.

Roody Harris is a manager at SecureScan LLC, the 2023 NYSID Corporate Partner of the Year.

At SecureScan, individuals with diverse abilities are welcomed into the document imaging operation to show what they can contribute. After a short time on the team, Roody’s contributions grew, leading to more responsibilities over time. The increase in financial security has improved Roody’s home life and allowed him to reconnect with his three children.

Roody credits SecureScan management for deeply caring about their employees and the work they perform, in particular his supervisor, Michael Came, who has also come up from the ranks. “My supervisor has been a mentor to me.

If I could count the hours of training he has put into me as a person, it would be outstanding,” he said. They meet together early each morning to plan the day before the team arrives.

They don’t go home until the job is done.

Came said, “Many of our clients go through NYSID to get to us and begin their employment journey. It’s such an honor for SecureScan to be named the Corporate Partner of the Year, so we can keep impacting lives like Roody’s through our collaboration.”

SECURITY Ian Palmateer | Community, Work & Independence, Inc. Madeline Witt is a custodian with Second Chance Opportunities, the 2023 NYSID Member Agency of the Year.

Madeline is on her way to home ownership thanks to a steady paycheck for her job well done. As a daytime attendant at the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation headquarters in downtown Albany, her attention to detail and engaging manner is appreciated by building tenants who consider her part of the team.

“I enjoy working here. Every floor of the building is like a different family, and all are counting on me for a safe, clean workplace.

Working here makes me feel important,” Madeline said.

Second Chance Opportunities became involved with NYSID more than 10 years ago to help assist individuals in recovery find stability through employment. It manages multiple NYSID janitorial teams through­out the Capital Region at key state agency buildings and the Adirondack Welcome Center off the Northway.

Individuals like Madeline earn competitive integrated wages to pay their bills and save for the future. “A house of my own is everything I’ve ever wanted, and it’s a goal I will achieve. What I put out is what I get back,” Madeline said.
