Getting the right training and developing the skills that employers need has never been more important. That is why, at NWSLC, we have been working hard to ensure that our range of courses and apprenticeships reflect changes in the workplace and growing demand in key sectors. Coming to college means that you will be on the right track towards securing jobs and careers in the disciplines that are set to grow in the future.

In September 2022, we will be offering T Level courses for the first time. These are two-year vocational courses that have been developed alongside employers so that they fully prepare students for work. T Levels are high quality technical alternatives to A Levels that combine classroom theory and practical learning with an industry placement to make sure that you have the skills you need to progress.

As a college that already works closely with hundreds of employers, we have wide experience of delivering skills in high demand areas such as digital, engineering (particularly automotive engineering), construction, logistics and health and life sciences.

We work in partnership with several universities and can help you to progress on to higher education with options to stay local and continue your studies at college or even combine them with your career.

WE ARE A WORLDSKILLS ‘CENTRE OF EXCELLENCE’ As a student of NWSLC you will get the amazing opportunity to take part in WorldSkills UK, the Olympics of vocational skills.

NWSLC is one of just 20 colleges selected to participate in the first phase of the WorldSkills Centre of Excellence scheme. Launched by WorldSkills UK in partnership with education and skills charity NCFE, the Centre of Excellence is designed to boost world-class standards in skills development.

In 2019, our talented students made it to the finals at WorldSkills UK Live – where they faced challenges and skills test to find the most talented students in the UK. NWSLC competitors came back with a huge haul of 5 Gold medals, 6 Silver and 3 Bronze medals.

Three students then made it through to WorldSkills UK Talent Development Programme, where they are coached by leading professionals and then selected to represent the UK at WorldSkills Shanghai 2022.

NUNEATON Hinckley Road CV11 6BH Nuneaton is our largest campus and home to a wide range of vocational courses. It offers a great range of services that are open to the local community as well as students. These include The Salons, Sports and Fitness Centre, WiseOwls Nursery and Glebegate Restaurant.

MIRA TECHNOLOGY INSTITUTE Eastern Avenue, Nuneaton CV10 0UX Home to our specialist automotive courses, MIRA Technology Institute (MTI) is a bespoke global skills centre on the grounds of MIRA Technology Park. Created to satisfy an ever-increasing demand for specialist skills in the automotive sector, it is fitted out with industry specific technology and three fully equipped workshops, which include a 3D printer, vehicle lifts, CNC lathes and milling machines.

WIGSTON

Blaby Road LE18 4PH Home to a wide range of vocational courses, our Wigston Campus (formerly known as South Leicestershire College), is a community friendly campus, with great facilities. It is home to a nursery, spa and hairdressing salons. It is houses our film, TV and Radio studios.

HINCKLEY Lower Bond Street LE10 1QU This specially-designed campus is a hub of creative energy!

Our facilities are the very best in the local area, featuring high specification industry-standard equipment and technology, including kilns and pottery studios, film and gaming workspaces, a full photography studio, recording studios and a 200 seat theatre.

It’s also home to our onsite florist, Creative Blooms, and our fashion and textiles machine and cutting rooms.

HARROWBROOK Nuffield Road LE10 3DT This campus simulates a real-life construction and logistics workplace. Located on the Harrowbrook Industrial Estate in Hinckley, it is home to both apprenticeships and full-time courses.

DIGITAL SKILLS ACADEMY Puma Way, Coventry CV1 2TT Located on Coventry University’s Technology Park, this is our campus dedicated to all things digital.

We offer courses and Apprenticeships in a range of tech-focused areas including software development and cybersecurity.

E M E K A T S U P M A C TO Car There is a daily charge for parking at all our campuses.

To park you will need the appropriate permit. Please note space is limited at some campuses.

Bike Cycling to college is a great option. Our campuses have secure bike shelters, and bike locks are available to purchase.

Train Our Nuneaton, Hinckley and Wigston Campuses are within easy walking distance from train stations, and railcards are available to help you save a third off rail fares.

Bus There are a range of bus pass options available. Speak with our Student Support team to find out more.

Wigston Campus We have two contract buses in place covering Market Harborough and Husbands Bosworth. The cost of the college bus pass will be £400 per academic year (price correct as of August 2021). To apply for a pass please see a member of the Student Support Team.

Student Support We have great services in place to make sure you are supported all year round.

English and maths As part of your course, you will continue to build on your English and maths skills.

Depending on your grades, you will study either a GCSE in English and/or a GCSE in maths or Functional Skills in either subject.

We also have a dedicated English and maths hub where you can get help with assignments, and get extra support to help you polish up your core skills.

Keeping you safe Your safety is our priority. The Safeguarding Team is located at every campus and is available at all times if you are worried about anyone or anything. Our youth workers are always available for a chat if you have any worries. All staff, students and visitors are expected to wear ID badges to help keep you safe.

Guidance We have a team of dedicated career experts that will make sure you are on track to pursue a career you are passionate about. If you are unsure which path to take, the guidance team can provide free, impartial advice on careers and applying for jobs.

College meals If you meet the required criteria you may be eligible for a free meal on the days you attend college.

Childcare support Students aged under 20 can claim childcare funding through the ‘Care to Learn’ scheme.

Financial support There is plenty of financial support available to make sure you can study worry-free. If you are aged 16-19 on a full-time course, there are no course or examination fees.

We have a bursary fund which supports additional costs that are associated with some courses, such as kit and uniforms, meals and travel, childcare and essential college trips.

Apprenticeships Get paid, get qualified and get ahead with an Apprenticeship Employers want employees who are keen to train and contribute to the growth of their businesses. Technical skills and experience will be crucial to the success of all parts of the UK economy. You can be part of that success by enhancing your career opportunities by completing an Apprenticeship.

Do you like the idea of getting straight into work?

As an Apprentice you will work as a paid employee while studying for your qualification. An Apprenticeship is a great way to start with an employer, gain experience and begin climbing your career ladder.

What are the benefits of an Apprenticeship? · · · · · ·

An Apprenticeship will add qualification, skills and experience to your CV You learn by working alongside experienced staff You will gain job-specific skills You can start anytime throughout the year You will earn a salary while you learn You don’t have to be a school leaver – you can study at any age

How much will you be paid?

You will receive at least the national minimum Apprenticeship wage which is £4.30 per hour (from April 2021) for 16 – 18-year-olds, with many employers paying more.

How many hours will you work?

You will work at least 30 hours per week. Training for your qualification will take place either in your workplace or at college, usually for one day per week.

How can you apply?

Applying for an Apprenticeship is slightly different to applying for a full-time course. Check out our ‘how to apply’ section for more details on page 73.

T Levels T Levels are a brand new qualification designed to give you a head start towards the future you want.

You can start a T Level following the completion of your GCSEs. T Levels are equivalent to 3 A Levels or a BTEC Level 3, so you can go on to a higher apprenticeship or higher education.

Brand new for 2022

The 2-year T Level qualification brings classroom and work placement together on a course designed with industry professionals. You will spend 80% of your time in the classroom and 20% on an industry placement to give you the skills and knowledge employers are looking for.

Your T Level will help you to step straight into your chosen career, an apprenticeship, or a degree.

Name: Aman Jandu Course: Level 3 Motor Vehicle Apprenticeship AJ completed his Apprenticeship and is now working as a technican at our Harrowbrook Campus in Hinckley. AJ helps to support skills development in forklift truck engineering for apprentices who work for major logistics brands including Impact Handling and Jungheinrich to improve their knowledge and understanding of brakes, engines, and electrics.

During her college course, Megan spent two days each week working in placements, firstly within a local nursery and then in a primary school. During her time at Henry’s Day Nursery in Nuneaton, Megan spent time planning activities to help children’s physical, cognitive and social development. She led them in baking and cooking activities to help them to understand food and hygiene. The children took part in hopscotch, treasure hunts and obstacle courses to boost their strength, and fine motor skills were improved through colouring and writing.

The company is the market leader in specialist apprenticeship software that captures evidence of skills, knowledge and behaviours.

Madeline achieved her Level 3 Apprenticeship for IT, Software, Web and Telecoms Professionals in October 2019.

Madeline works an IT support role, helping organisations that carry out assessments on a range of apprenticeships. Madeline responds to support tickets and delivers training on how to use the Smart End Point Assessment (SEPA) system via online webinars. Her role requires knowledge and understanding of both the technical and non-technical aspects of the platform and she is skilled in being able to translate technical language into terms that are widely understood by those operating the system.

We launched the Digital Skills Academy in March 2020. The Academy is designed to give our students the next step up in their digital journey. Focusing on Software Development, Networking and Cybersecurity once our students pass their Level 3 courses they can move on to; our Higher Education courses at the college or join the Academy to fast track their career through an Apprenticeship.

Supported Internships Our Supported Internship programme enables students with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) to start their transition into the world of work. Supported internships are year-long industry placements that encompass a wide range of job roles. Each student benefits from the support of a specially trained job coach who helps to keep them on track.

Our students have flourished during their placements as they grow in confidence, develop vocational skills, and become more independent. Their success on the programme helps to boost their employability and start meaningful careers in the future.

Several students are already benefiting from internships with the National Grid Metering Team where they help with tasks to manage automated meter reading, help maintain laptops for the business, and assist with organising projects for domestic and commercial customers.

The college offers Supported Internships within its own teams including at its Creative Blooms florists at Hinckley Campus, in the construction workshop at Harrowbrook Campus, and in the kitchens at Nuneaton Campus.

CASE STUDY Name: Courtney Paige Mellon Course: Level 3 Health and Social Care Former health and social care student Courtney Paige is living out her dream of becoming a nurse to young children through a university work placement at the ground-breaking Alder Hey Children’s Hospital.

Currently following a degree in paediatric nursing at Edgehill University, Courtney Paige has been working on a surgical ward at the state-of-the-art Alder Hey in Liverpool.

Courtney Paige said, “I did start A Levels but knew within weeks that it wasn’t the right route for me and that’s when I enrolled at the college’s Nuneaton Campus. I have always wanted to be a nurse from a young age, but I didn’t even know it was possible to be a children’s nurse. When I found out about the paediatric nursing career path, I knew I was on the right track.” During her college course, Courtney Paige worked one day a week at Oak Wood, a special school in Nuneaton, helping to support children with a wide range of special educational needs including profound, severe and moderate learning disabilities and autistic spectrum condition.

Name: James Ryder Course: Level 3 Sport Former sport student achieves his football goal with key FA role James Ryder, former sport student from North Warwickshire and South Leicestershire College (NWSLC), who joined premiership team West Bromwich Albion FC as an intern has worked his way to a role with the FA and is now based at St George’s Park as senior men’s performance analyst working with the U21 squad.

James’ passion for football took him from a sport course at NWSLC to helping the England football team win its first-ever penalty shootout against Colombia in the 2018 World Cup. James’ ambitions started at a young age when he was asked to write down the job he most wanted at the age of 14 and seal it in an envelope. He remembers clearly that his dream would be to become a premiership football club manager.

James said: “The college sport course opened my eyes to the types of careers that are available and gave me a really good foundation in the skills and disciplines that I would need to get on. I learned about playing, coaching, the business aspects of sport, the IT skills I would need, and how to make presentations which I do a lot now in my job working with the England u21 team.”

Attend an interview Once you have applied, we will contact you to arrange an interview, either onsite or via phone. Interviews are informal sessions to ensure you start your course at the right level.

Meet your tutor Before you start your course, you will be invited to a College Welcome Day after your GCSE’s in July, discover more about college life.

You will also complete an assessment. There is no pass or fail, the assessment will simply ensure that you start your course at the right level for you and for you to get to know us, as a college better.
