DISCOVER YOUR FUTURE

The world of employment is experiencing changes that are creating demand for new and exciting careers as we respond to the climate change agenda and contribute towards the UK’s economic recovery.
Getting the right training and developing the skills that employers need has never been more important. That is why, at NWSLC, we have been working hard to ensure that our range of courses, T Levels and apprenticeships reflect changes in the workplace and growing demand in key sectors.
Coming to college means that you will give yourself the very best chance of securing jobs and careers in the disciplines that are set to grow in the future.
From September, we have been offering T Level courses for the first time. These are two-year vocational courses that have been developed alongside employers so that they fully prepare students for work. T Levels are high quality technical alternatives to A Levels that combine classroom theory and practical learning with an industry placement to make sure that you have the skills you need to progress.
As a college that already works closely with hundreds of employers, we have wide experience of supporting you to develop skills in high demand areas such as digital, engineering (particularly automotive engineering), construction, logistics and health and life sciences. We work in partnership with several universities and can help you to progress on to higher education with the option to stay local and continue your studies at college or even combine them with your career.
You will be joining a supportive community driven by the values of respect, honesty, and kindness. We pride ourselves on being innovative in helping you develop the skills and knowledge for your future careers and we are renowned nationally for our exciting use of skills competitions to push you to excel. We want you to enjoy learning with us and to feel safe and supported along the way.
Whatever your starting point, we will do our very best to make sure that you have the knowledge, skills and support you need to progress. I very much look forward to seeing you soon and welcoming you into our college community.

Blake always had an interest in IT and digital technology; he first started building computers in the 2000s and quickly moved on to setting up networks, working with software, and general troubleshooting. As a student he expanded his interests in IT & digital technology through college and then into higher education.
Blake started to combine his interest in digital technologies with games, from developing mini games to setting up online competitive games servers. Alongside this one of his former lecturers asked if he could support classes at NWSLC in IT, and in no time at all Blake was delivering IT lessons to students from entry level up to higher education. In more recent years with the growth of Esports in education, Blake has developed, promoted, and delivered the Esports course here at NWSLC.
Blake said “What I love most about the industry is that it is limitless. It is forever growing and expanding, technology is changing constantly, we rely on it as a society. I love the exciting opportunities for students.”

“I have always had a passion for gaming and technology, but when I went to university there weren’t courses in game development or design, it was something people worked on in their bedrooms. The sector has changed so much since its boom in commercial developments about 40 years ago, but there is still a thriving independent developers’ scene.
“My journey involved an unpaid internship for 18 months in London, for a company that offered me a paid role at the end. I started in ‘world design’ and then I worked my way up in the company. I went back to education to upskill in project and people management and then ended up doing my PhD in VR as a PTSD therapy for veterans. I have had my eyes opened to the future applications of technologies outside gaming development.
“I came into teaching during my return to education and I really love nurturing and creating an environment that allows my students to come in with ideas and then we work together to bring them to life almost at product launch stage. We run like a real company, where you work in a collaborative way to develop a game. From the initial market research, through to the final creation of the product. Courtney Paige, from Nuneaton, is currently studying a paediatric nursing degree at Edgehill University. She said that the Level 3 Health and Social Care course at NWSLC provided the best route into university for her and she would recommend it as an alternative to A Levels.
Courtney said, “I did start A Levels but knew within weeks that it wasn’t the right route for me and that’s when I enrolled at the college’s Nuneaton Campus. I have always wanted to be a nurse from a young age, but I didn’t even know it was possible to be a children’s nurse. I’ve had plenty of practice looking after younger children as I am one of nine. I also spent a lot of time with a friend who needed hospital treatment and that experience helped me decide that I wanted to work in a healthcare setting. When I found about the paediatric nursing career path, I knew I was on the right track”.
I really enjoyed the Health and Social Care course and my tutor was fantastic. She was so supportive throughout my studies and I wouldn’t have been able to do it without her.

Dean Burnham is now Head Chef at the Black Horse Restaurant and returned to NWSLC’s Glebegate restaurant in 2022 as a guest chef. Dean said:
I have always kept in contact with my tutors as they have been so supportive to me. I’m very happy to come back as a guest chef. I remember having guest chefs visit when I was a student, they were so exciting and that’s why I’m here, I want to do that for the students. I’ve been able to show them some of the competition skills that I’ve learnt. Just like I did, I hope the students can see how the skills they learn in college transfer to a working kitchen serving the public.

Name: Isobelle Wightman
Course: Level 3 Photography
Isobelle started her journey with the college on a Level 3 Photography course and enjoyed it so much that she decided to stay and complete her degree with NWSLC.
“I loved photography from an early age, it just clicked when I chose GCSE Photography. I wanted to continue my studies in the area and visited different sixth forms and colleges. It was only when I got to the Hinckley campus that I felt I had found the place for me. The equipment was so good and industry standard, the darkroom was amazing, I was able to see the opportunities it would give me to develop my work.“
Isobelle recently won the prestigious 2022 EIZO Student Award, with her submission, ‘The Individuals’. She secured new equipment but more importantly a work placement and mentorship with Harry Borden, a well-respected and established photographer.
Isobelle said: “When I looked at the theme of identity, I didn’t want to look at the stereotypes of identity or the differences in identity. I created a mind map of what made us similar and through this process it became apparent that our simplest form of identity was our fingerprints.”
Winning the competition was a real surprise, especially as I was only a first year student. I am looking forward to working with my mentor and learning from his journey to developing his photography career. “

The sports course was perfect.
“I found that the skills I had developed in college led me into fitness instructing, which enabled me to develop my marketing and promotional skills, and now I have come full circle and I am based at Coventry City FC again in a different capacity. When I got the job here working with the Sky Blues in the Community team, it was just like coming home because of my previous experience as a player.”

Former sport student achieves his football goal with key FA role
James Ryder, joined West Bromwich Albion FC as an intern and has worked his way up to a role with the FA, he is now based at St George’s Park as senior men’s performance analyst working with the U21 squad.
James’ passion for football took him from a sport course at NWSLC to helping the England football team win its first-ever penalty shootout against Colombia in the 2018 World Cup. James’ ambitions started at a young age when he was asked to write down the job he most wanted at the age of 14 and seal it in an envelope. He remembers clearly that his dream would be to become a premiership football club manager.
James said: “The college sport course opened my eyes to the types of careers that are available and gave me a really good foundation in the skills and disciplines that I would need to get on. I learned about playing, coaching, the business aspects of sport, the IT skills I would need, and how to make presentations which I do a lot now in my job working with the England u21 team.”

Name: Amber Mayes
Course: Level 3 Uniformed Services
Amber made the decision to join NWSLC at the age of 16 and started a Level 1 Sport course at its Wigston Campus. Although unsure at first about her decision, Amber soon settled into college life and continued in the second year having progressed to the Level 2 Public Services course. Amber found the subject interesting and her tutors demonstrated how qualifications in public services might lead to several different career routes. As she matured, Amber’s approach to study improved and she progressed on to the Level 3 Uniformed Services course. Having seen the transformation that engagement with education had achieved for her, Amber started to think about becoming a teaching assistant in a behavioural management setting. She achieved well at Level 3 and her tutors convinced her to continue with her studies by taking a higher-level qualification. Amber, from New Parks in Leicester said,
Since joining the college, my experience of, and attitude towards education, has changed completely. My tutors have been so brilliant; they have always pushed me to keep moving on with my studies and I have surprised myself with how far I have come.
During her college career, Amber became the only student at NWSLC to be twice nominated for a ‘Star’ award as part of the college’s annual celebration of achievement event. Completing her Level 5 HND Public Services, Amber then started her first job as a teaching assistant at Dovetree School in Hinckley, a specialist day school that provides education for pupils with social, emotional, and mental health needs.

is great for me
I get to learn on the job. I have been shown how to weld, accurately drill holes and re-cut threads. The best thing about the apprenticeship is learning from the experts and getting paid at the end of it.
I really enjoyed my apprenticeship at Creative62, and the team has helped me enormously to develop my professional skills. Qualifying first at NWSLC gave me a great foundation for my next step and my college assessor has provided great support as I worked towards my assessment. I already had experience of developing relationships with beauty and fashion brands as an online influencer, so I understand the potential for social commerce.
