Engineering Skills & Training A Guide for Employers

Engineering training for your current and future workforce Engineering and manufacturing are two of the UK’s broadest sectors. Five and a half million people work in engineering in the UK, accounting for 18% of all UK employment. It is estimated that the industry will need 200,000 skilled engineers between now and 2024 to meet demand.

We have strong relationships with local and national engineering businesses, meaning that we are able to listen and respond to requirements to address potential future skills shortages and gaps within the sector. This has meant that our engineering offer is continuously evolving.

North Warwickshire and South Leicestershire College, and the MIRA Technology Institute (MTI) provide pristine, modern, learning environments as well as spacious workshops containing industry-standard equipment to deliver specialist engineering training that meet employers’ needs.

Our industry specialists deliver an exceptional quality of training to ensure that your current and future workforce is fully prepared to engage with techniques and equipment that you use within your business now, as well as those that are emerging in the sector.

Growing your workforce Industry placements

Apprenticeships

Our industry placement programme allows NWSLC students to get a taste for work in an industry they love alongside full-time study. As an employer, you are asked to provide a one day a week opportunity within your business for a student at no cost to you. You might find a new employee to help bolster your workforce.

Apprenticeships are a cost-effective way to draw new skills into your workforce, allowing you to train and develop new employees to reach high workshop standards. An apprentice will work with you for up to 30 hours per week combined with 6 hours off the job training. We currently offer a range of apprenticeships to suit a variety of engineering roles and skills such as fabrication and welding, mechanical, technicians, mechatronic, electrician, propulsion, product design and much more.

Developing your current workforce It also allows you to create a multi-skilled team that can help you to generate business growth.

Apprenticeships Anyone of any age can be an apprentice. Your employees earn the same wage while bringing new skills back into our business. We have many engineering apprenticeships that can be used to develop your workforce.

CPD training We offer classroom, online and blended learning options through our range of CPD and certified qualifications as well as bespoke workplace training packages. These courses have been guided by professionals within the engineering sector.

MIRA Technology Institute Our MTI campus provides a state-of-the-art environment in which we deliver a diverse range of courses for engineers covering the latest skills in subjects such as cybersecurity, functional safety, hazard management and control systems as well as IMI short courses.
