Industrial and Systems Engineering

Nurturing Holistic Engineers to Drive Change

What is ISE?

Industrial and Systems Engineering (ISE) uses scientific approaches in data analytics, systems modelling, decisionmaking, and management to tackle problems in fields such as supply chain, business, production, finance, sustainability, and healthcare services.

You will be taught methodologies based on applied mathematics, operations research, and computer science, and you will receive extensive training through industrial attachments and system design projects. You will learn to devise smart, data-driven solutions that positively impact society across diverse fields of work, especially in the high-growth areas of the digital, green, and care economies.

Why Choose ISE?

• ISE is committed to equipping you with the requisite skills contributing to the most relevant megatrend areas of supply chain resilience, digital economy, and the green economy.

• ISE graduates command good employability and receive attractive offers from renowned companies, including those in finance, business consulting, supply chain, digital technology, etc.

• ISE training and expertise are relevant and valuable across different sectors and time, making you resilient to shifts in economy and employment opportunities even in the long term.

Areas of Specialisation

Supply Chain Analytics

Supply chains are critical enablers of any economy. In recent years, companies have witnessed the immense benefits of the application of advances in data analytics and digitalisation to improve supply chain efficiency and resilience. Real-time shipping route optimisation and inventory management with computational models, and demand forecasting with machine learning technologies, are examples among many which you will deep dive and learn in this specialisation.

Analytics and Decision Intelligence

Decision intelligence combines science and technologies such as operations research, machine learning, artificial intelligence, deep learning, UX design, and business process management to analyse and provide decision support for tackling large-scale and complex challenges. Training in this specialisation enables you to harness the power of decision intelligence to derive impactful and robust data-driven solutions in any industry.

Sustainability Analytics

The pressures of climate change and net-zero emissions ambitions signal an urgent need for transformation across all economic sectors. In this specialisation, you will learn the frameworks, concepts, and tools for analysing sustainability problems, including emissions accounting, estimation and prediction using data analytics, and clean technology investments using optimisation techniques. You will bring forth a unique suite of skills to any organisation looking to achieve deep decarbonisation for a green and sustainable future.

Academic Journey

1 Year 2 Year 3 Year Year

4

Throughout your ISE journey, you will build up your knowledge and skills progressively.

You will build foundational skills through a broad variety of courses across the College of Design and Engineering, including exposure to programming, mathematical methodologies, and project management fundamentals. Upon completion of Year 1, you would have grown in confidence and sharpened your awareness and knowledge through the acquisition of foundational skills.

Moving into Year 2, you will dive into core ISE courses, learning unique and powerful methodologies like operations research and data analytics. You will be taught interesting applications of probability models and introduced to systems thinking concepts that prepare you to study and analyse complex problems in the future. At the same time, you will continue to level up your computing proficiency and knowledge in data structures and be immersed in training on how to use various machine learning algorithms.

In Year 3, you can utilise the flexibility to chart your own academic curriculum, for example in choosing a specialisation that suits your passion (Supply Chain Analytics, Analytics and Decision Intelligence, or Sustainability Analytics). Many students also take the opportunity this year to gain real-life work experience through internships or go on exchange programmes to visit our partner universities overseas.

Finally, Year 4 is where everything comes together with your capstone course, Systems Design Project. It is a year-long project where you and your teammates tackle a real-world industry problem, carefully curated by the Department in collaboration with our partner companies. You will be required to apply all the skills you have gained in a practical and challenging setting and play the lead role in driving the project towards success from end-to-end. If you are curious about academic research, the Final Year Project course is available for students to work closely with their professor and deep-dive into a year-long thesis-based project.
