CARL SCHAPER - SHAPER

With decades of experience in the shaping bay, Carl Schaper belongs to the higher echelon of shaper royalty on the Hawaiian island of Oahu. Knowing a thing or two about high-performance surfing, Carl shapes for some of the very best surfers out there, including a two-time longboard World Champion, pipeline charger and industry legends like Garrett McNamara (Guiness Book of Records for biggest wave ever ridden).

MARCIE O’NEILL - SHAPER

Legendary shaper Marcie O’Neill, teamed up with NSP to bring some new direction to the already popular Longboard Elements, Funboard and Fish shapes.

Marcie grew up surfing in Australia and started designing surfboards at the Aloha Factory in 1989. Coming from a traditional, yet eccentric background, when you look a little closer at the lines and rockers, you will see how our longboard, funboard and fish have evolved in terms of performance and taken on Marcie’s highly regarded style.

Marcie’s Tinder-D8 design is a perfect match! Available in a variety of sizes and three different constructions, CSE, Elements and Protech, the Tinder-D8 is an accessible high-performance shortboard that will allow all riders to up their game, in all conditions. This Tinder-D8 won’t let you down.

TULLY ST. JOHN - SHAPER

Tully St. John is the owner/shaper of the legendary Laguna Bay Longboards from Noosa Heads, Australia. Down to earth and heavily involved in the local long-boarding subculture, Tully has been shaping since his early days in high school. His shapes are being used by multiple World Champions, right through to everyday surfers, wanting something truly exceptional under their feet.

Tully’s shapes have been honed on the long running walls of Noosa’s Surf Reserve and its many surrounding beach breaks.

Available in PU and Elements, you can feel the glide and flow in each of Tully’s refined shapes.

- SHAPER

Starting at the young age of 15, Kym Thompson made designing surfboards his life’s work, designing and shaping everything from single-fin boards, right down to all possible multi-fin configurations. Originally, Kym began his career shaping longboards and as the shortboard era took hold, Kym advanced his skills and transitioned his designs to meet the demands of the market.

From the beginning, dating back to 2001, NSP built a strong partnership with Kym being the mastermind behind the popular PU Heritage Series. His Endless, Hooligan, Dream Rider and Fighting Fish shapes are integrated in the lightweight and sustainable CocoFlax series.

Kym’s last creation, the all-new Atomic Flyer was Kym’s latest addition to the PU line-up, combining a retro look with performance features designed for intermediate- to advanced riders.

It is with great sadness that we have to announce the passing of Kym on November 1st, 2022 - our amazing friend, gifted shaper and hard-working colleague .

Kym’s greatest creations will remain a lasting legacy within the NSP surf line-up.

NSP SHAPERS UNION

Shapers Union is a collaboration between NSP and several world-class shapers. Established to bring new life, energy and high-performance to the surf range, Shapers Union is NSP’s way to showcase the incredible talent of shapers who have collaborated with World Champions, both from longboarding and shortboarding.

NSP is proud to have teamed up with Hawaiian-based Carl Schaper and the Australians, Tully St. John, Kym Thompson, and Marcie O’Neill. All masters at their trade, these shapers create the shapes that allow top-level surfers to achieve the impossible, while also providing groms with the gear that enables them to hone their skills from entry-level, right up to the tour.

Shapers Union boards will be predominately constructed using the latest highperformance Custom Surf Epoxy (CSE); the next-level in surfboard technology by NSP. Our very best craftsmen start with a CNC-cut EPS core and sand it by hand into the final desired shape. Each shape then gets a different tried-and-tested glassing schedule with a UV-stable resin, along with fiber-reinforced tail patches, finalized with a satin rub finish. Shapers Union boards can also be found in some of our PU and Elements constructions.

Shapers Union boards come with NSP’s FTU fin box setup and the result is a high-performance surfboard with plenty of flex, generating speed and maneuverability unlike anything else. The CSE longboards also feature a wood stringer and carbon stringers on the bottom.

We are beyond stoked, working together with shapers from all around the world who share the same philosophy as NSP: getting as many of surfers on the water with a product that performs and enhances their surfing.

EQUALIZER

Carl Schaper really loves shaping and designing boards for waves of consequence.

Starting out in Florida and Puerto Rico back in the day, Carl took on longboard shaping requests just to familiarize himself with creating bigger boards. Carl never shied away from designing them and with over 30 years of shaping in Hawaii under his belt, he has some of the very best big wave riders amongst his loyal customers.

The Equalizer shapes are designed with NSP’s custom surf lay-up featuring a 36g EPS core, 12mm wood stringer, and proven Hawaiian Gun glassing specs Timeless outlines and rails combined with modern rockers and bottom contours along with fin placements have been tested and proven to perfection on Oahu’s notorious North Shore.

If you are in the business of conquering some very serious waves, getting an Equalizer is the ticket!

All Equalizers come with 5 FTU fin boxes, compatible with Futures Fins (fins not included).

This year, in addition to the red, blue and green, we are adding clear-coated Equalizers to the line-up.

PRO-9 NSP

The NSP Pro-9 is designed by Carl Schaper as a performance longboard. Meant to be ridden hard, this aggressive longboard shape is ideal for riders who will bury a rail with ease.

Shape:

The Pro-9 is a longboard with as much shortboard crammed into it as possible. Carl Schaper will often point out the back-third of the board, as it fits almost perfectly on his 6’2” step up, with the same thickness, tail dimensions and rails. The bottom has a soft roll to V in the middle, running into V with a double concave in the tail.

Designed as a single fin or quad fin setup, the Pro-9 is a low-volume, extremely high-performance longboard, capable of doing it all with tons of maneuvering and solid nose-riding!

Fin Setup:

The Pro-9 comes in a 4+1 fin configuration enabling you to be creative in your setup as a quad or thruster. NSP positioned the Surf 10 fin box slightly further back, to enable a 2+1 setup. The Pro-9 comes with FTU boxes for its sidefins, making it compatible with Futures® Fins (fins not included).

Carl Schaper is best known for his longboards, but his Butter Knife is second to none, when it comes to his mini-tank designs.

The Butter Knife with its classic outlines, perfect performance longboard rockers and thought-out volumes is a winner across the board. Suitable for all abilities, ride them as single fins in the smaller conditions and let its nose riding capabilities surprise you. And when it gets a bit punchier, slip in the side bites and you have a perfectly riding board for just about all conditions.

Built with custom surf epoxy lay-up, with a clear UV-stable resin and satin rub finish and combined with a CNC-cut EPS core, laminated with full 220g biax deck and 4oz, bottom 6oz, a 4oz fin patch, a 6mm wood stringer, bottom carbon stringer and carbon reinforced tail, giving you a durable longboard with high-performance and flex that feels light and responsive.

The Butter Knife comes in a 4+1 fin configuration enabling you to be creative in your setup as a quad or thruster. NSP positioned the Surf 10 fin box slightly further back to make it available for a thruster setup.

Beautiful outlines combined with relaxed nose rockers, classic roll to V with double concaves in the tail combine to give you that “easy in” with loads of rail-to-rail performance.

The Atomic Flyer has a history and you can see it in all its glory when you examine its different shape features.

The Atomic Flyer was Kym’s last creation, designed for surfers of all levels. The fin cluster allows everyone to set up their board to their preferences, from small-to medium-sized waves.

Key Features:

A unique feature is the retro “beak” style nose profile, which is a result of maintaining some thickness and volume in the forward profile of the board. The purpose of this is to add stability to the board in small and less powerful waves. This increased volume delivers and helps maintain forward momentum and forward trim sensitivity.

The essence of the outline is defined by the double wings, which delivers a very purposeful function to this design. The objective of these “flyer” serves to increase the displacement and “trim” area throughout the board. This unique feature in the board’s displacement increases the volume under foot while maintaining a refinement in the tail outline. The result is an improved low speed dynamic.

The soft diamond tail shape delivers a swallow tail like performance, but without the worries and maintenance issues associated with the pragmatic swallow tails.

Other interesting features such as the flat deck, delivers a very unique and positive response feel under foot. In addition, the distinctive beveled rail concept not only adds to the retro look, it increases the form and function. This allows for volume throughout the board to be maintained without impacting and bulking up the rail and dulling the boards response and reactivity.

NSP’s Nature Flex technology is the latest eco-friendly line in our surfboard constructions. Building on the overwhelming response to the CSE range designed by Carl Schaper, NSP R&D created an eco-centered alternative for the Shapers Union Pro-9, Butter Knife, and The Cheater.

Nature Flex layups consist of a strong, EPS core, which benefits the environment by minimizing foam cut-offs and foam dust waste. The core is reinforced with a 6mm bamboo wood stringer and wrapped in a strong, durable and warp-resistant Paulownia wood skin.

The result is a state-of-the-art surfboard shape, with an eco-friendly footprint and a classic design.

NSP OUR STORY

NSP was born in 2001 from the vision of Bruce “Buzz” Hansen, a life-long surfer, skater and all round waterman.

While working on Maui as a custom surfboard builder, Buzz had an epiphany about producing affordable, versatile, durable and great performing surfboards. Buzz correctly realized there were everyday surfers who needed an affordable board that performed in Hawaii, yet they didn’t require “custom” or specialized competition or extreme surf boards.

His dream was a utilitarian surfboard that could ride in the back of a pick-up truck to the beach, be left in the sun all-day or loaned to a friend without fear of damage – of course it had to surf well enough to be given to his long-time surfing buddies, neighbors and friends.

The quest began, so Buzz summoned his friends working for a leading composites manufacturer with the goal to create a light, very durable surf board at highly competitive prices. Working together they Introduced a new epoxy technology that would go on to revolutionize the industry and quite possibly recreational surfing. Weekend and occasional surfers no longer had to rely on the ill- performing “foamiest” or be relegated to the used board market.

Our code name during development was “New Surf Project”. The name stuck and “NSP” was established. Over the years, we changed and evolved, and so did the name. Today, NSP stands for “Nature”, “Surfing” and “Products” because at the end of the day, that is what the company is all about.

Creating amazing products, firmly maintaining our surfing roots while we expand in other exciting water sports with the best possible designers, engineers and materials involved. And last but definitely not least; “Nature”. Choosing repurposed, recycled or renewable resources wherever we can is essential to us as a brand, creating a more sustainable future for ourselves and our sport.

Today, NSP is one of the world’s largest brands in recreational surfing and Stand-up Paddleboarding. Everyday new enthusiasts, young and old, go out and introduce their friends and family to the freedom of the sport and the brand.

Since 2013 NSP has produced some of the fastest SUP race boards on the planet, quickly racking up some of the most sought after and prestigious titles with the help of national and international athletes.

In 20+ years, with hundreds of thousands of boards produced, our core values remain the same. NSP stays true to the vision of creating great performing, affordable, durable surf and paddle boards that allow everyone to catch more waves.

NSP SUSTAINABILITY

At NSP we respect the environment and the world we play in. We are constantly looking for new ideas and innovative technologies to reduce the negative impact on our planet as we build surf, foil and SUP boards. We try to adhere to the basic principle that every product produced must have some form of environmentally sustainable component; whether it’s our CocoFlax technology, EPS core, recycled traction pads, bio-friendly resins, and our packaging. Surfing has been around for hundreds of years and we want to see it for another couple of thousand.

AWARD WINNING : COCOFLAX CONSTRUCTION

In 2019, NSP was awarded Paddle Expo Product of the Year for the CocoFlax technology.

NSP CocoMat is the world’s first and only Patent Pending construction that uses natural fibers from coconut husks to create a light and strong micro sandwich.

Another industry leading innovation by NSP is the use of water-based dye pigments in our CocoMat construction. These dyes use zero percent solvents or other toxic additives.

Locally-sourced coconut fibers, traditionally considered a waste product in the region, are re-purposed by NSP. The properties of this natural fiber allow us to build lighter and more durable equipment for you, while it significantly reduces our carbon footprint as we continue to create some of the best watersports equipment on the market.

In keeping with our pledge to pursue sustainable materials and manufacturing, NSP introduced Flax Fiber Rail technology to the CocoMat series in 2019; resulting in the CocoFlax range. This already eco-friendly product benefits from this highly durable reinforced fiber made from the flax seed plant, and helps NSP in reducing the use of fiberglass and minimizing our overall carbon footprint.

NSP was the first to incorporate shape molded Secure-cell EPS blanks in our surf- and SUP manufacturing process. The result is almost zero foam dust waste.

Whether you are foiling, surfing or paddling – at a certain performance level traction pads become essential. The added grip inspires confidence and allows for more radical moves. And speaking of radical, we are proud to announce that these re-purposed EVA pads have the lowest carbon footprint in the entire NSP product line-up.

ECO-FRIENDLY BOARD PACKAGING NSP

We wanted to create a greener product packaging that would eliminate the landfills from excessive amounts of plastic. We joined Cobra International to find a solution that not only protects your board from dust, debris and scratches when it is being transported, but one that allows you to dispose of the packaging, knowing that it is 100% bio-degradeable.

We use a combination of kraft paper wrap and tissue paper that we use to package the boards and although we are striving to be 100% sustainable in our packaging, we are not quite there yet with our PU boards. We have yet to find a material that keeps the boards protected without scratching or damaging the clear coat- if you have any suggestions, please contact our product team to discuss. We are always open to hear how we can become better for the planet!
