NSP was born in 2001 from the vision of Bruce “Buzz” Hansen, a lifelong surfer, skater and all-round waterman. While working in Maui as a custom surfboard builder, Buzz had an epiphany about producing affordable, versatile, durable and great performing surfboards.

Buzz correctly realized everyday surfers needed an affordable board that performed in Hawaii, yet they didn’t require “custom” or specialized competition or extreme surfboards.

His dream was a utilitarian surfboard that could ride in the back of a pick-up truck to the beach, be left in the sun all day or loaned to a friend without fear of damage - of course it had to surf well enough to be given to his long-time surfing buddies, neighbours and friends and save face.

Great Performance

The quest began, Buzz summoned his friends working for a leading composites manufacturer to create a light, very durable surfboard at highly competitive prices. Working together, they introduced a new epoxy technology that would go on to revolutionize the industry and quite possibly recreational surfing. Weekend and occasional surfers no longer had to rely on the ill-performing “foamies” or be relegated to the used board market.

What does NSP stand for

The code name during development was “New Surf Project”. Somehow the name stuck and “NSP” was established. The word “New” reflects the brand’s identity, using innovative technologies that are new to the market and a new way of thinking about the surf industry.

NSP began selling in Hawaii and Australia in 2002 with immediate success, making surfing more accessible. In 2007, NSP was one of the first brands to produce SUPs based on the brand’s original concept of performance and value.

OUR STORY

Today, NSP is one of the world’s largest brands in recreational surfing, stand-up paddle boarding and now foiling. Everyday new enthusiasts, young and old, go out and introduce their friends and family to the freedom of the sport and the brand. Since 2013 NSP has produced some of the fastest SUP race boards on the planet, quickly racking up some of the most sought after and prestigious titles with the help of national and international athletes.

In almost 20 years, with hundreds of thousands of boards produced, our core values remain the same. NSP stays true to the vision of creating great performing, affordable, durable surf and paddle boards that allow everyone to catch more waves and fly even higher.

Foiling and NSP

With high-level sailors on the management team, hydrofoils have been on our radar since day one. The ability to ride un-breaking waves and to enjoy downwinders at speeds that were previously unthinkable, has fueled our desire to create affordable and high-performance foiling products.

Key foiling athletes like Annie Reickert, Dale Chapman, Beau O’Brian, Alex Bicrel and Ty Judson, along with F4 Designs, all contribute to a foiling range that includes SUP boards, surfboards and a top of the line foil. The entire board range uses a proven twin track mounting system.

NSP Airwave Hydrofoil

The modular Airwave hydrofoil comes with a wide range of masts, wings and shims for a perfect tune. By using both carbon composites and CNC aluminium for key components, the NSP Airwave is a high-performance hydrofoil, outperforming conventional and pricier hydrofoils. The entire NSP Foil range relies on the twin-track mounting system, as it is more convenient to assemble and easy to tune the perfect foil position for ability and rider weight.

SUSTAINABILITY

At NSP we respect the environment and the world we play in. We are constantly looking for new ideas and technologies to reduce the impact on our planet as we build surf and SUP boards.

NSP CocoMat technology

NSP CocoMat technology is the world’s first and only Patent Pending construction that uses natural fibers from coconut husk to create a light and strong micro sandwich.

NSP introduced Flax Fiber Rail technology to the CocoMat series in 2019. This already eco-friendly product benefits from this highly durable reinforced fiber made from the flax seed plant, helps NSP in reducing the use of fiberglass and overall carbon footprint.

SecureCell EPS cores eliminate waste

NSP was the first to incorporate shape molded SecureCell EPS blanks in our Surf, SUP and Foil board manufacturing process. Compared to conventional surfboard shaping, the result is almost zero waste of foam dust.

Bio-friendly green epoxy by Sicomin

NSP uses green epoxy resin by Sicomin Systems. Sicomin is a company investing considerable resources into innovation and the distribution of green epoxy systems which are based on natural ingredients and more environment friendly. NSP CocoMat boards for instance, are manufactured with high performance bio epoxy resin, based on no less than 28% of plant-based organics.

Water-based dye pigments with 0% solvents

Another industry leading innovation by NSP is the use of water based dye pigments in our CocoMat construction. These dyes use zero percent solvents or other toxic additives.

Deckpads from recycled EVA

To minimize the ecological impact of our production processes, NSP collects the EVA scraps from our cutting floors and recycles them into after-market deckpads. Extremely durable, these thermoformed deck pads will outlast conventional EVA, while reducing waste in our landfills.

Sustainable Surf certification

In acknowledgement of NSP’s sustainable efforts and years of implementing new technologies and techniques that help reduce the environmental impact, NSP has partnered with Sustainable Surf’s Ecoboard project. Today, 90% of the NSP line up meets their strict requirements, justifying the use of the highly respected Sustainable Surf Ecoboard logo.

Sustainable Surf is a California-based non-profit charity organization focused on transforming surf culture into a powerful force for protecting the ocean playground. Learn more at: http://sustainablesurf.org

The new NSP Airwave is perfect for small to medium-sized waves for both lighter and heavier riders. Designed for regular surfing and SUP, the NSP Airwave can be towed, used for wakeboarding, surf, SUP and kite wing foiling as well.

The 78 wing is simply amazing. It’s suitable for riders of all skill levels. This is because it not only lifts early, but is super FAST. It’s a medium aspect ratio design that combines a draft forward profile with an elliptical planform.

F4 Foil Design Team

I would go as far to say that we found the FERRARI of foils. Ty Judson International Team Rider

With low-speed take off and excellent rider feedback, the NSP Airwave lifts early. Efficient wing design in combination with an incredibly stiff fuselage and mast allow for an unusual amount of control and stability, making the NSP Airwave perfect for all disciplines of foiling.

Smooth elliptical curves give you the drive to surf and commit to effortless rail-to-rail transitions. Stability comes in buckets at all speeds, and glide characteristics are great. Foiling is all about feedback and this foil package gives you the feedback required to execute committed turns and extend your glide. A 78 cm front wing in combination with the 11 cm rear wing leverages your pumping action while creating appropriate lift and stability.

The vertical component of the rear wing on the tail combined with fuselage length and shape plays a role in the directional stability, however the amount of curve on the rear wing largely helps to determine directional stability and is directly related to roll or side to side stability.

The rear wing tunes how much effort and force is required to initiate turning or how loose the foil is. Our wing design with tips curving up, combined with the overall front wing and fuselage design, provide plenty of directional stability.

Control the angle of attack of your rear wing with three high-quality shims, all included in this complete foil package.

Tune your NSP Airwave with the wide range of aftermarket options to customize your unique foiling style.

The standard flat back stabilizer wing is great for pumping and straight line speed. The optional after market M wing provides better stability while turning compared to the flatter wing (great step up for waves and big carving turns).

Foil Travel Bag (Included in each complete set)*

• High-quality 600D fabric.

• Highly durable zipper.

• Padded custom shape to size interior compartments and fits additional aftermarket front wing, rear wing and mast.

* Foil kit contains : 1325 front wing, 330 rear wing, mast, fuselage, top plate, shims, screws and assembly tool.

TUNING SHIM COMPARISONS

Rear Wing Trim Shims

Change turning and balance with interchangeable rear wing shims.

The shims can be used to adjust the angle of attack of the rear wing to tune the lift off behavior, balance, speed and turning.

We recommend you start with the 2-degree shim (orange) and play around with the 1 (silver) and 3 degree (black) as you increase skill and the conditions change.

Greater angles with certain profiles help with pumping. A larger angle on the rear wing makes the upstroke (pushing down with back leg) easier and provides greater thrust relative to the downstroke (pushing down with front leg).

The recessed carbon-reinforced deck lowers your centre of gravity, adding stability and control. A center ridge just below the EVA deck pad runs conveniently along the entire length of the deck pad allowing you to position yourself on the center of your board without looking down.

A full-length uni-directional carbon stringer on the deck plus a uni-directional carbon stringer on the bottom add strength and foil drive.

Chine rails on the bottom are very forgiving for those last minute touchdowns and the smooth rocker through the flat, towards the tail, is combined with a late kick behind the foil. Dale designed this board with a little more volume to help you generate early speed to get on the foil under the back-foot area – this helps catching bumps earlier for an easy lift-off.

The latest generation of NSP foil boards come exclusively with twin track mounts. Designed to withstand the increased torsional forces the hydrofoils can exert on a board, it is the widest accepted foil system in the industry and NSP’s preferred foil mounting system.

NSP traction pad

Whether you are foiling, surfing or paddling – the NSP traction pads provide long-lasting grip and confidence. Especially in foiling, a delicate balance is required to get you flying over the surface of the water and your feet need precise positioning to control pitch, roll and yaw.

Always centered

NSP tail pads feature a kick tail and a mild dome in the center of the pad. The ridges of the dome will make sure your back foot finds the dead center of your board without ever looking down.

Thermoformed texture ensures your back foot stays planted over the mast at all times. For hard pumping or committing to a tight radius, get that extra leverage by moving your back foot against the kick tail and force the last bit of performance from your board.

More durable

There is nothing worse than a peeling deck pad, which is why NSP uses premium 3M adhesives, as it provides the best possible bond between your board and the thermoformed EVA. Different from conventional EVA, thermoforming gives these pads a more abrasion-resistant layer that will hold up longer. Make sure your board is properly cleaned up before applying the pads, and wait 24 hours before hitting the water to get the best possible bond for years to come. Removal is easiest with a hot air gun and some soapy water.

Versatile patterns

A 3-piece tail pad is the most versatile pattern that still offers variable width and an arched center strip. It’s the easiest to install, offers tons of grip and will work on any board. In combination with the 4-piece pattern for the front part of the deck, you should have the standing area of your board covered.

Directional diamond-shaped pattern

The deeper the grooves, the more resistance against slipping and superior traction.

Kick & arch

Performance riders benefit from a 45 degrees kick whenever your foot needs to be well-placed to blow out a wave. Apart from the comfort aspect, an arch helps your backfoot instinctively find the centre line of your board without ever having to look down.

AIRWAVE Q&A

A lot of foils on the market have the back wing with the tips facing down. Why does the NSP design regular flat back wing have the tips facing up?

There are many options in terms of tips up or tips down, where you put the surface area, etc and both can provide similar riding characteristics. Bear in mind that the rear wing is always pulling down so it’s acting opposite to the front wing which is always lifting. Tips up, we find provides more direction stability and less drag for a given area due to the wing geometry reducing tip vortexes (induced drag).

Why do some companies have a vertical wing at the rear of the foil and why doesn’t NSP?

Firstly, the foils are like airplanes and follow the same principles for stability, speed and lift off. The vertical component of the rear wing or extra vertical wing on the tail provide directional stability. There are other factors that contribute to this like fuselage length and shape, however the amount of curve on the rear wing largely helps to determine directional stability and is directly related to roll or side to side stability. So, with the rear wing we are tuning how much effort and force is required to initiate turning or how loose the foil is. Our wing design with tips curving up combined with the overall front wing and fuselage design provide plenty of directional stability.

What is the aspect ratio of 78 cm wing span?

4:6

What is the aspect ratio of 85 cm wing span? 4:25

Is the NSP airwave foil package suitable for kite, wake or wind foiling?

It’s designed for surf, SUP, kite and wake. Theoretically wings will work great for windsurf with a longer fuselage setting the wing further forward but a tuttle box adapter would also be required (NSP tuttle coming soon)..

What is the reason for the shims and in what situation should we change them?

The shims can be used to adjust the angle of attack of the back wing to tune the lift off behavior, balance, speed and turning. We recommend you start with the 2-degree shim and play around with the 1 & 3 degree as you increase skill and the conditions change. (Check page 10 of our foil shim tuning guide for more details).

Why should we use the M back stabilizer wing over the standard back wing?

The standard flat back stabilizer wing is great for pumping and straight line speed. The M wing provides better stability while turning compared to the flatter wing - (great step up for waves and big carving turns).

What are the main differences between an aluminum and carbon mast?

There are several factors, carbon is a bit lighter and more responsive than aluminum. However, aluminum is strong, durable, generally stiffer but heavier. Heavier underwater helps stability and glide (lighter isn’t always better). Everything above water needs to be as light as possible.

For the speeds we are aiming for with the NSP Airwave foils, the aluminum mast works amazingly well and offers lots of advantages with very similar performance to carbon.

Any recommendation where to set the foil on the board? Distance from tail? Mast in relation to the riders back foot?

The rear wing angle determines where the feet go. With the 2-degree shim normally the arch of the rear foot over the trailing edge of the mast is a good place to start. Move the mast forward for more lift and back for less lift. Everything is relative to your speed, size of the front wing and which shim you have on the rear wing.

How does the NSP foil design stack up against others?

• We learned early on that stiffness is critical for stability and performance and the attachment points are very important. Any movement in the wings or mast connection causes control problems. Also since most of the foil is underwater, the weight is mostly important for handling while out of the water, however contributes to stability while in the water. We’ve greatly simplified the design based on flat connecting surfaces; goes together easily with most of the angles built in with CNC machining tolerances. Modularity is built in and any of the parts are easily replaceable.

• Best riding foil – best combination of price and performance. Super stiff and easy to ride foil. Excellent wave riding performance with many tuning options.

• Stiffer and more modular – modular design with bolt on wings –easily change mast, wings without a hammer. Slip on fit designs are very difficult to get right, they are either too tight or too loose.

• Tune performance with rear wing shims – change turning and balance with interchangeable rear wing shims.

• Easily upgradable and maintainable – any part can be easily replaced or changed.

• Carbon prepreg wings – positively buoyant and super strong and stiff.
