OUR STORY

NSP was born in 2001 from the vision of Bruce “Buzz” Hansen, a life-long surfer, skater and allround waterman. While working in Maui as a custom surfboard builder, Buzz had an epiphany about producing affordable, versatile, durable and great performing surfboards. Buzz correctly realized there were everyday surfers that needed an affordable board that performed in Hawaii, yet they didn’t require “custom” or specialized competition or extreme surfboards.

His dream was a utilitarian surfboard thatcould ride in the back of a pick-up truck to the beach, be left in the sun all day or loaned to a friend without fear of damage - of course it had to surf well enough to be given to his long-time surfing buddies, neighbors and friends and save face.

Great Performance

The quest began, so Buzz summoned his friends working for a leading composites manufacturer with the goal to create a light, very durable surfboard at highly competitive prices. Working together, they introduced a new epoxy technology that would go on to revolutionize the industry and quite possibly recreational surfing. Weekend and occasional surfers no longer had to rely on the ill-performing “foamies” or be relegated to the used board market.

What Does NSP stand for

The code name during development was “New Surf Project”. Somehow the name stuck and “NSP” was established. The word “New” reflects the brands identity, using innovative technologies that are new to the market and a new way of thinking about the surf industry.

NSP began selling in Hawaii and Australia in 2002 with immediate success, making surfing more accessible. In 2007 NSP was one of the first brands to produce SUPs based on the brand’s original concept of performance and value.

Continuing to spread the stoke

Today, NSP is one of the world’s largest brands in surfing and stand-up paddleboards. Every day, young and old enthusiasts, go out and introduce their friends and family to the freedom of the sport and the brand.

Since 2013 NSP has produced some of the fastest SUP race boards on the planet, quickly racking up some of the most sought after and prestigious titles with the help of national and international athletes.

In over 19 years, with hundreds of thousands of boards produced, our core values remain the same. NSP stays true to the vision of creating great performing, affordable, durable surf- and paddleboards that allow everyone to surf.

SecureCell EPS cores eliminate waste

NSP was the first to incorporate shape molded SecureCell EPS blanks in our Surf and SUP manufacturing process. Compared to conventional surfboard shaping, the results is almost zero waste of foam dust.

Deckpads

from recycled EVA

To minimize the ecological impact of our production processes, NSP collects the EVA scraps from our cutting floors and recycles them into after-market deckpads. Extremely durable, these thermoformed deckpads will outlast conventional EVA, while reducing waste in our landfills.

Bio-friendly green epoxy by Sicomin

NSP uses green epoxy resin by Sicomin Systems. Sicomin is a company investing considerable resources intoinnovation and the distribution of green epoxy systems which are based on natural ingredients and more environment friendly. NSP CocoMat boards for instance, are manufactured with high performance bio epoxy resin, based on no less than 28% of plant-based organics.

Water-based dye pigments with 0% solvents

Another industry leading innovation by NSP is the use of water based dye pigments in our Cocomat construction. These dyes use zero percent solvents or other toxic additives.

Sustainable Surf certification

In acknowledgement of NSP’s sustainable efforts and years of implementing new technologies and techniques that help reduce the environmental impact, NSP has partnered with Sustainable Surf’s Ecoboard project. Today, 90% of the NSP line up meets their strict requirements, justifying the use of the highly respected Sustainable Surf Ecoboard logo.

NSP CocoMat technology is the world’s first and only Patent Pending construction that uses natural fibers from coconut husk to create a light and strong micro sandwich.

Marcie O’Neill

In 2017, Legendary shaper Marcie O’Neill, teamed up with NSP to bring some new direction to the already popular Elements Longboard, Funboard and Fish surf shapes. Marcie grew up surfing in Australia and started designing surf boards at the Aloha Factory in 1989.

Coming from a traditional, yet eccentric background, when you look a little closer at the lines and rockers, you will see how our Longboard, Funboard and Fish Elements have evolved in terms of performance and taken on Marcie’s highly regarded style. We look forward to continuing our partnership with Marcie as we further develop the NSP range.

Kym Thompson

Starting at the young age of 15, Kym Thompson made designing surfboards his life’s work and to this day he designed and shaped everything from single-fin boards, right down to all multi-fin configurations. Originally Kym began his career shaping longboards and as the shortboard era took hold, Kym advanced his skills and transitioned his designs to meet the demands of the market. From the beginning, dating back to 2001, NSP built a strong partnership with Kym being the mastermind behind the popular PU Heritage Series. His Endless, Hooligan, Dream Rider and Fighting Fish shapes are now integrated in the light weight and sustainable CocoMat and Coco Flax series. The new NSP Airwave is perfect for small to medium-sized waves for both lighter and heavier riders. Designed for regular surfing and SUP, the NSP Airwave can be towed, used for wakeboarding, surf, SUP and kiting as well.

With low-speed take off and excellent rider feedback, the NSP Airwave lifts early. Efficient wing design in combination with an incredibly stiff fuselage and mast allow for an unusual amount of control and stability, making the NSP Airwave perfect for all disciplines of foiling.

Smooth elliptical curves give you the drive to surf and commit to effortless rail-to-rail transitions. Stability comes in buckets at all speeds, and glide characteristics are great. Foiling is all about feedback and this foil package gives you the feedback required to execute committed turns and extend your glide. A 78 cm front wing in combination with the 11 cm M wing leverages your pumping action while creating appropriate lift and stability.

The vertical component of the rear wing on the tail combined with fuselage length and shape plays a role in the directional stability, however the amount of curve on the rear wing largely helps to determine directional stability and is directly related to roll or side to side stability. So, with the rear wing we are tuning how much effort and force is required to initiate turning or how loose the foil is. Our wing design with tips curving up combined with the overall front wing and fuselage design provide plenty of directional stability.

The standard flat back stabilizer wing is great for pumping and straight line speed. The M wing provides better stability while turning compared to the flatter wing (great step up for waves and big carving turns).

Recommendations :

•Beginner foilers: 78 is an all-around awesome wing, some might start on the 60 mast and use the 3 degree shim. Best to learn behind a boat, jet ski or on a 2.0 cable, if your local cable park has one. Bigger riders (90 kg +) will want to start on the 85 wing.

TUNING SHIM COMPARISONS

Change turning and balance with interchangeable rear wing shims.

The shims can be used to adjust the angle of attack of the back wing to tune the lift off behavior, balance, speed and turning.

We recommend you start with the 2-degree shim (orange) and play around with the 1 (silver) and 3 degree (black) as you increase skill and the conditions change.

Greater angles with certain profiles help with pumping. A larger angle on the rear wing makes the upstroke (pushing down with back leg) easier and provides greater thrust relative to to the downstroke (pushing down with front leg).

Your pocket rocket in the range and built for advanced foilers. The 4’6” comes with a more chined rail design and narrower shape. The nose and tail contain enough volume to paddle in, so you still get to lift with ease.

5’2” x 21”

The preferred size of Dale Chapman himself. Amazingly easy to catch waves, this board has a fair amount of chine on the rails to avoid catching an edge. The rocker is flat through the tail to get you up quickly, with the right amount of scoop to pump back out and catch the next wave.

5’6” x 22”

Is the largest in the range and more of a surfboard shape. At 22 inches wide it’s super stable, easy to lift and comes with plenty of forgiveness when you touch down. The rails are slightly chinned and the recessed deck lowers the centre of gravity while offering a more comfortable ride. This makes the board the perfect choice for larger riders or those who are new to foiling. It’s easy to start and super forgiving.

Whether you are foiling, surfing or paddling – the NSP traction pads provide long-lasting grip and confidence. Especially in foiling, a delicate balance is required to get you flying over the surface of the water and your feet need precise positioning to control pitch, roll and yaw.

Always centered

NSP tail pads feature a kicktail and a mild dome in the center of the pad. The ridges of the dome will make sure your back foot finds the dead center of your board without ever looking down.

Thermoformed texture ensures your back foot stays planted over the mast at all times. For hard pumping or committing to a tight radius, get that extra leverage by moving your back foot against the kicktail and force the last bit of performance from your board.

More durable

There is nothing worse than a peeling deck pad, which is why NSP uses premium 3M adhesives, as it provides the best possible bond between your board and the Thermoformed EVA. Different from conventional EVA, thermoforming gives these pads a more abrasion-resistant layer that will hold up longer. Make sure your board is properly cleaned up before applying the pads, and wait 24 hours before hitting the water to get the best possible bond for years to come. Removal is easiest with a hot air gun and some soapy water.

Versatile patterns

A 3-piece tail pad is the most versatile pattern that still offers variable width and an arched center strip. It’s the easiest to install, offers tons of grip and will work on any board. In combination with the 4-piece pattern for the front part of the deck, you should have the standing area of your board covered.

Kick & Arch

NSP is one of the world’s largest brands in recreational surfing and stand up paddleboarding. Since 2011 NSP has produced some of the fastest SUP race boards on the planet, quickly racking up some of the most sought after and prestigious titles with the help of national and international athletes.

Our race designer, Alain Teurquetil, first came across stand up paddling back in 2008 when his tandem-surfing buddy came back from Hawaii and decided to leave a paddle with Alain. Finding a paddle board in Australia back then was next to impossible, but another coincidence had Alain meet Dale Chapman. Living just an hour away, Dale was the only shaper on the Gold Coast with an interest in SUP design. Intrigued, Alain spent a lot of time paddling and trying out different concepts that year.

Several months later, Alain was traveling back from Europe and visited the Gold Coast once more. This time, Dale was working on 12’6” shapes and unlimited race boards, which caught Alain’s interest. After trying a 16’ race board, the virus really got a hold of him. Exploring different performance designs together, Alain quickly hit the limitations of his software. A solution came from Shape3D, a software company specializing in surf designs. By tweaking their CAD program beyond the metrics of classic surf and windsurf designs, creating advanced race boards from design to finish became effortless.

In 2011, team NSP, under the direction of Trent Pedersen (today’s Brand Manager and CEO), along with his team, produced their first production race boards. These boards were later selected by the ISA to be used in 2012 at the ISA SUP World Championships in Peru. From there, NSP, with their boards quickly gaining a reputation for speed, approached Dale to collaborate on a race program for the brand. Under the condition that a top athlete would be signed to promote, test and help develop the race brand, Travis Grant joined the NSP team that same year and history was made.

Travis rode Alain’s winning designs and Dale shaped the prototypes into existence. In 2013 Alain and Dale tested their first 12’6” design in Europe, laying the foundation of NSP’s current racing and touring program. Alain with the help of our pro team continues to design and develop the the NSP race program while Dale focuses his attention on producing some of the most cutting edge foil and surf sup deigns. Together, Alain, Travis and Titouan Puyo created a race program that secured 4 Molokai titles, 3 Carolina Cup victories and 3 Airfrance victories with many more to come.

With Hawaiian ultra-talent Annie Reickert joining the team, NSP has some of the very best watermen and women training and testing NSP products. Their findings, in combination with Alain‘s designs create NSP products that perform and will continue to be at the top of podiums around the world.

CAROLINA

Recessed, course raceboard with allround performance for all conditions.

The NSP racing team has dominated the Carolina Cup for years now, with riders like Titouan Puyo winning back-to-back titles in 2016 and 2017 and Travis Grant coming in 1st in 2015 and 2nd in 2016, 2017 and 2018. It is only fitting that we call our latest race board “Carolina”.

The brand new Carolina excels in all conditions from beach starts, downwind sections, flat-water sections, surf, headwinds, crosswind to gnarly currents. The design builds on key features of the Sonic, our best downwind board to date. A reduced rocker line translates into additional efficiency in flatter conditions, hitting peak performance on flat water, and water with a degree of texture. The Carolina is a winning choice for 90% of all racing conditions mother nature can throw at you.

The Carolina truly excels in flat to medium downwind conditions. Its shape also performs well in upwind and crosswind conditions.

Fin Race 20, 22

NINJA

A predominately flat-water board that excels in chop and small bumps.

The Ninja’s are all about efficiency, saving the energy riders need for longer runs.

Originally a flatwater racer with key design elements that helped in flatwater with disruptive chop, the Ninja continued to evolve into a flatwater board that can handle (mild) sea conditions. Nose diving is minimized by a subtle redistribution of the volume, while an improved cockpit design keeps out more water.

A lower centre of gravity helps stability, which allowed the design team to reduce the width of the 21” model, creating a new Ninja with a width of just 20”.

The NSP Ninja gives paddlers an incredibly fast flatwater weapon, but the best part is that the new Ninja works in water with textured conditions as well. The increasing demands of flatwater racers, looking to race even narrower shapes, made us design the Ninja in 21” up to 24” widths as well.

SONIC

Downwind, recessed board allowing you to effortlessly link bump after bump.

The Sonic is designed specifically as an open-water, downwind race board but it also performs very well in upwind and crosswind conditions.

A Sonic doesn’t compromise and only aims for maximum performance. The pintail, the recessed deck and a lowered centre of gravity all make this the most stable Sonic to date. The width of the board has also been optimized.

The Sonic performs best when you hit some chop or string together bump after bump on big ocean swells.

• The 14’ x 25.5” model is a more stable and comfortable version of the 14’ x 24”.

• If a rider is not used to being in front of the pack in an elite field or simply battles for a win in a specific age group, this athlete will most certainly be faster on the 14’x 25.5” than the 14’x 24”.

Design:

• All 2020 Sonics use the same shape and design as the 2019 model.

• The nose rocker and pintail are perfectly suited for downwind conditions.

• The Sonic uses a bottom shape that combines stability with the gliding characteristics of the high-performance Molokai designs.

PUMA

A flat deck board suited for all paddlers, in all conditions.

Our most versatile and user-friendly performance racer in the NSP range, tweaked to have even more stability with the same width of last year’s design. This new found stability really makes a difference in crowded buoy turns or during a quick surf when you hit the back of the board.

If you want to kick turn easily, if you want to play in waves, if you want to downwind, and if you are not yet comfortable with a recessed deck, or if you simply prefer to race on a flat deck board, the NSP Puma is for you.

Initially designed for beach racing, the Puma’s have evolved into very capable downwinders and flat-water boards.

Design:

All 2020 Puma boards share the same rocker line for faster flatwater performance for the wide models. The slight concave in the center helps the sprinting ability of the boards.

Surf Race 20

Molokai

The dominating unlimited downwinder.

The Molokai is named after and designed for one of the most demanding races – The Molokai 2 Oahu. NSP team rider Travis Grant won this legendary title 4 times. His experience in this grueling race, combined with the designs of Alain Teurquetil accumulated in the 2019 Molokai Unlimited Pro Carbon, an elite shape that performs in any downwind, upwind, side-wind or semi-flat to choppy race you find yourself in.

Design:

The 17’2”x23” recess uses a new concept bottom that combines the added stability of the 2018 and the extreme glide these shapes are known for. This allows you to link bump after bump in an effortless way.

Key design elements can be found in the 2019 14’ Sonic as well. The newly introduced 17’2”x25” recess also shares important design elements of the 17’2”x23”, but offers a more comfortable racing experience.

Our NSP paddle range is designed to get you where you want to go with ease, efficiency and speed. Utilizing the best materials, lay-ups and production processes, NSP paddles are engineered with just the right amount of flex, strength and weight to allow for longer paddle sessions on the water.

In 2020 we have made our paddle range extremely easy to choose. The power face of our Speedster and Allround models are exacty the same, however the difference lies in the lay-ups. We now offer our top of the line carbon, eco-friendly coco fiber hybrid and an eco, but yet price-friendly carbon hybrid with a more pronounced dihedral.

The raised and extended dihedral provides more strength to the blade and allows a smooth transition and thinner blade. The edge is only 1.7 mm thick which gives a super smooth water entrance with initial bite. The raised tip is parallel to the shaft for aggressive catch and controlling the pace going through the power face.

Every rider will have the same feel when the blade hits the water. The new blades produce a lot of speed, conserve energy and allow paddlers a great session everytime. #justaddwater
