In October last year, the Express reported on the dangers of the R75, which has long been considered Nelson Mandela Bay’s most hazardous road owing to its unsafe conditions
The road has earned the nickname “road of death” owing to its long history of accidents and safety concerns Retief Odendaal, DA PE Southwest and Winterhoek Constituency Leader and former Executive Mayor of NMB, has been vocal about these issues and has written to SANRAL CEO Reginald Demana Odendaal acknowledged SANRAL’s efforts in maintaining the national road network but pointed out numerous safety shortcomings that remain unresolved Among these are significant hazards caused by damaged
guardrails, insecure intersections, and poorly maintained road reserves, which collectively create a dangerous driving environment
To address these issues, the DA proposed a collaborative approach, submitting a memorandum to SANRAL in September 2024
The plan included hosting discussions with municipal officials and SANRAL, arranging measures to address high-risk intersections, and implementing joint operations involving SAPS, Traffic Services, and Metro Police It also encouraged using advanced drone technology to improve road safety and escalate the matter nationally and provincially
SANRAL acknowledged the memorandum received from the DA in the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality The memorandum was received by SANRAL’s Acting General Manager for Transformation and Stakeholder Relations, Siphiwo Mxhosa
“SANRAL notes the memorandum submitted by the Democratic Alliance around the state of the R75 section between Gqeberha and Kariega in the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality We will study the contents of the memorandum and will communicate on a
way forward once this internal process has been concluded,” said Mxhosa at the time
The memorandum followed SANRAL’s media statement issued towards the end of September last year, calling for a multi-stakeholder collaboration to restore the R75 to a safer state in the Nelson Mandela Bay metro
SANRAL had cited incidences of intimidation and demands for participation, theft and vandalism to the road infrastructure, as well as challenges around second-tier procurement for targeted enterprises (SMMEs) that had inhibited its contractor from effectively maintaining the R75
“Stakeholder engagement is among the key strategic pillars at SANRAL Engagement with our stakeholders enables us to deliver road infrastructure to communities in an effective and efficient manner We have an open-door policy to facilitate continuous engagement ensuring that we are aligned with their needs We appreciate input and feedback from our stakeholders, and we will continue to work closely with them in our road infrastructure service delivery,” Mxhosa concluded
AFTER 26 years with Spar, the owner of Despatch SuperSpar, Paul Barnes, was recently named the Spar Regional Retail Winner, in a competition which includes all Spar stores in the Eastern Cape
Speaking to UD Express, Barnes said, “It is a huge honour for me to get this recognition I never thought that I was in the running for it For the team at Despatch, we are honoured We have won Store of the Year before, but this recognition is awesome For a retail store from a small town like Despatch to be recognised provincially, it is even more special Seeing all the people that have won the award before me made me appreciate it more as well ”
He shared that the criteria for winning the award are broad; what you do for the brand, your involvement with the head office and what you put back into the business are some of these criteria
When asked what he believes is the reason for his nomination and his triumph in the Regional Retail category, he said that his dedication to Spar and its brand is at the forefront
He added that this is his 26th year with Spar, coming from being a Receiving Manager at another store, going through the ranks, buying his store in 2010 with his brothers and buying his brothers out about five years ago
Summarising, he said, “My dedication and what I give back to Spar is the reason I believe I won this achievement ”
After 26 years in the business, Barnes can still say that he loves his job “I love coming to work every day Not a day goes by when I sigh because I need to go to work For me, it’s so exciting and it is not an effort coming to work The
highlight of my job personally is seeing Despatch Spar grow from what it was when we bought it to where it is now That growth is phenomenal Every time I think about it, I feel warm and fuzzy
inside,” he said
One of the key reasons for his success as a business owner, Barnes said, is that he is nothing without his staff Barnes, who is known for his hands-on
approach with working with his staff, said, “I can’t claim this prize solely My staff have been a tremendous help to me to get where I am As owners, I believe we need to look after our staff, yes, discipline them when necessary, but supporting and looking after them is one of the reasons for this award,” he said Barnes added that he believes customer service is the most important thing to him, stating that he always tries to make sure that his customers have the best customer experience when they shop at his business
“In making sure that customers have the best time at the supermarket and not to dread going to the shops, I aim to make this shop the number one destination for shoppers in Despatch If my customers have a great shopping experience, it makes my day even better ”
One of the biggest catalysts in his time as a business owner was the Coronavirus “I fell critically ill, surviving on a ventilator for seven weeks and hospitalised for three months Thankfully, I had my wife who ran the business in my absence, without any retail experience
“Not only that, but having a trusted accountant who stole from us was very difficult to bounce back from, having had millions stolen from us I believe it was sheer hard work and dedication to the brand that we made it through that tough time,” Barnes said
“Few businesses made it out of Covid, but through the grace of God for keeping me alive to see it succeed, the staff adopting the ethos of excellent customer service I want in my store, the customers choosing to shop with us and my wife stepping in when I needed her, we were able to make it to the other side and at the end of it all, win this award,” Barnes concluded
THE Roselane Conservatoire of Music in Kariega is at the heart of a transformative new initiative launched by Nelson Mandela University’s Department of Music and Performing Arts
This pre-tertiary programme aims to provide talented learners and community members from under-resourced schools with formal music education, equipping them with the skills necessary to pursue higher education in music
“There are so many learners in our schools who have the talent but no formal music training and theory, which they need to access university We are determined to make this happen for them,” said Dr Rudi Bower, Head of the Department of Music and Performing Arts
Roselane Conservatoire of Music, along with Paterson High School in Gqeberha, is one of the first two groups to join the programme
The initiative focuses on learners in Grades 8, 9, and 10, although
it is open to younger students and recent school leavers
From Roselane, learners already proficient in various instruments will receive specialised theory and music training to build on their existing skills
Dr Bower emphasised that many of the Paterson High learners, including those selected from the school choir, have no instrumental background and will begin with vocal training and music theory
"The learners who progress in theory will eventually transition to instrument training, assisted by senior students in the department,” he explained
For the young musicians of Roselane Conservatoire, this programme is a significant step toward unlocking their full potential
Roselane’s students already play instruments at different levels, allowing them to progress quickly in both theory and practice This sets the conservatoire apart as an invaluable participant in shaping the future of music education in underprivileged communities
Dr Bower expressed pride in the dedication of Roselane learners and the support they receive from the pre-tertiary initiative: “Through the Youth Music Hub, we can change the lives of so many learners And we have everything in place to make this happen ”
Housed in the historic and fully refurbished Music Building at Nelson Mandela University’s Bird Street Campus, the programme features a self-contained facility with a concert hall, practice rooms, a library, and more
Mandela University is carrying the financial costs of the programme during its early stages However, Dr Bower is engaging with the Eastern Cape Department of Education for additional funding to expand the programme
During a meeting with District Director Ernest Gorgonzola and his team, Mandela University proposed expanding the Youth Music Hub, offering expert group training to a broad network of schools
“We raised the issue that there are so many schools under their care where no music is offered, and we have a possible solution,” Dr Bower said With funding, the programme could charge as little as R30 per learner per session, significantly reducing barriers to access
The initiative has the full dedication of staff members in the Music Department Among them is music lecturer Dr Erna Cloete, who travels from Jeffreys Bay every week to teach recorder lessons to 12 young learners at JBay Academy as part of the programme
Contrasting with traditional programmes that require considerable financial resources, the department offers affordable one-on-one lessons at an already low rate of R100 per session
“The meeting with the Department of Education went very well," noted Dr Bower "There were verbal agreements to take the collaboration further We believe this programme has all the potential to expand rapidly ” Currently, the learners from Paterson High are focusing on vocal training while familiarising themselves with music theory
Meanwhile, Roselane’s participants will embark on more advanced instrument training tailored to their abilities
With the combined passion of Mandela University, Roselane Conservatoire of Music, and dedicated educators, this pre-tertiary programme paves the way for young musicians from underprivileged communities
to access higher education and professional opportunities
“Through this Youth Music Hub, we can unlock the potential of talented learners and transform their lives,” Dr Bower said
THE Department of Agriculture, in collaboration with the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality (NMBM), recently handed over much-needed poultry feed to local farmers in Kariega
The distribution, supported by NMBM Executive Mayor, Councillor Babalwa Lobishe and the Economic Development, Tourism, and Agriculture (EDTA) Directorate, marked a significant boost for the local agricultural sector
A total of 1604 bags of poultry feed, valued at R846,697, were handed over to eight poultry farms These farms are part of the Uitenhage, Despatch, Greenbushes, and Rocklands (UDGRO) secondary cooperative, a network committed to cooperative farming and economic development
Addressing the event, MEC of Agriculture, Nonceba Kontsiwe, encouraged farmers in attendance to utilise the resources wisely and foster unity to achieve greater success “It is important for you to work together and make the most of the resources provided Unity will help you go further and achieve more as farmers,” said MEC Kontsiwe She further committed to supporting the farm-
ers through regular visits to monitor their progress and provide ongoing assistance
Lobishe also expressed her appreciation for the initiative and reaffirmed the municipality’s dedication to supporting local farmers “We welcome this support and remain committed to ensuring inclusive economic growth by empowering our farmers with the tools they need to succeed,” Lobishe said
Additionally, Member of Mayoral Committee for EDTA, Councillor Bassie Kamana, highlighted the efforts to provide comprehensive support to the farmers beyond the poultry feed “We are committed to offering additional resources, including providing poultry medication to ensure the farmers’ operations are effective and sustainable,” said Kamana
Municipal spokesperson Sithembiso Soyaya concluded that the municipality hopes that the handover event showcased the collaborative efforts of government stakeholders to strengthen the agricultural sector and empower local farmers “This support is expected to contribute significantly to sustainable farming practices and inclusive economic growth in the region,” he said
Sister publication, PE Express, recently reported that Kamana, along with Deputy Director for Urban Agriculture, Passmore Dongi, the Equleni Garden Project in NU29, Motherwell A project stands as a beacon of community-driven success and sustainability
Founded in 2023 by Monalisa Nomathamsanqa Badi, the garden has become a vital source of sustenance and community support Badi, who leads the initiative, explained, “I sell the crops to my local community, which allows me to feed my family and support a crèche with a soup kitchen, as well as elderly residents and my church, where I serve as a pastor With support from the Directorate, I am now able to change many lives I also plan to expand to a nursery in the near future ” The project has garnered support from the municipality, highlighted during the recent visit “This is one of the projects we support under EDTA,” stated MMC Kamana “Our goal is to empower individuals who want to pursue farming as a livelihood, helping them generate their own income We encourage more residents to start similar initiatives, as this will ensure long-term food security in our communities ”
