Foto: Stellenbosch-munsipaliteit/Facebook

Relocationwithouthiccups

The first residents of Langrug informal settlement in Franschhoek moved down the mountain on Monday (7 July) as part of the relocation project

According to the Stellenbosch Municipality 85 families will be relocated to the temporary housing in Mooiwater during the first phase of a planned housing project The project will also include the rehabilitation of a dam in Langrug

According to municipal spokesperson Stuart Grobbelaar, the first day of the relocation went well “To date, there has been very little to no resistance to the relocation by Langrug residents,” he says “Residents have generally been receptive and cooperative throughout the process As part of the temporary housing area [in Mooiwater] 219 structures have been built to accommodate affected families Ongoing engagements remain a priority In the event that any resistance is encountered, these processes will continue to ensure transparent and inclusive communication with all involved ” However, it seems that some tempers flared in Mooiwater “The Mooiwater

Langrug redevelopment

community has been actively involved in the project, with local representatives serving on the Project Steering Committee Twenty-two temporary structures have been allocated to backyard dwellers from Mooiwater, who are scheduled to move during the second phase of the project The tensions that occurred earlier [Monday] among Mooiwater residents was resolved swiftly and all work is proceeding smoothly once again,” Grobbelaar points out

CRAMPEDHOUSING

The planned move was not without push back from some Langrug residents either Earlier this year, Eikestadnuus reported on residents who refused to vacate their homes to move to the wendy houses erected by the municipality (“Residents object to relocation”, 27 March)

Residents who have lived in Langrug for years, like Ntombifikile Mvango, said they are not willing to move, in part due to the size of the temporary homes

Mvango believed the move from a two-bedroom home to a one-room wendy house would not only be cramped and un-

comfortable, but also mean she would have to leave most of her possessions behind

Despite some residents’ apprehension, others were satisfied with the planned relocation

Eikestadnuus spoke to one young woman who said she was willing to move as the temporary homes were fitted with electricity and running water She also said the “new” homes are bigger than her current shack

Now, months later, the first residents are moving, but Isaac Davids, community activist at Concerned Residents Franschhoek, claims there were still many unknowns As part of the relocation residents signed memoranda of understanding (MOUs) with the municipality and contractors confirming their change of address

“Officials from the municipality met with residents to sign MOUs for the relocation,” Davids says

“They were not told what exactly this entails and now residents who moved are upset by the housing they have received Many residents were intimidated by both officials and the contractors on Monday,

and they are realising the move was not necessarily for the better ”

LEGALADVICE

Grobbelaar says copies of the MOUs will be handed over to residents “The municipality confirms that, as discussed during previous community engagements, copies will be distributed to the beneficiaries once all parties have completed the signing process ” But Davids labels this practice as unacceptable as it does not allow residents time to seek legal advice “We are not against a move, but what we are calling for is adequate housing with water, electricity and indoor toilets On Monday residents were told that once the dam rehabilitation is complete, they can move back as housing will be made available ”

Grobbelaar confirms construction work on the permanent development will start once all families of the first phase of relocation have moved Work includes the dam rehabilitation and installation of municipal services, including water pipes, electricity cables and the stormwater system

For his part, Davids says residents are looking to contact the Human Rights Commission about the relocation

Verskil eindig in mesdood

Building at Haute Cabrière halted

JanaScheepers

Construction work at the Haute Cabrière restaurant, part of the acclaimed wine estate in Franschhoek, was temporarily halted by the Department of Employment and Labour last week following a site inspection that uncovered multiple health and safety violations

However, according to Haute Cabrière spokesperson Tanja von Arnim, construction resumed on Monday (7 July), following the resolution of the department’s concerns by the preceding Sunday (6 July)

She said the wine farm was constructing a new reception area aimed at “enhancing both the restaurant and wine-tasting experience”

According to a statement issued by the Department of Employment and Labour (DEL), inspectors from its Inspection and Enforcement Services served a prohibition notice during an unannounced blitz inspection, ordering immediate suspension of all construction activities

The enforcement formed part of a week-long, province-wide campaign focusing on compliance within the hospitality sector It aimed to ensure adherence to labour and occupational-health and safety legislation

David Esau, provincial chief inspector, led the inspection and cautioned contractors against prioritising profit over worker safety

During the inspection, Fezeka Ngalo, an occupational health and

safety (OHS) specialist at DEL, addressed workers on site

“These [problems] included the absence of a legally required health-and-safety file, employees operating without personal protective equipment and failure to notify the department formally about the construction activity ”

Additionally, a subcontractor appointed by the principal contractor was unable to present a valid appointment letter, which is another contravention of OHS regulations, according to the press release by DEL

“To start with, Haute Cabrière would like to thank the labour department for upholding the rights and safety of workers, and we are thankful they have been able to support us in ensuring a safe environment,” Von Armin said

“As an estate we appointed top architects, engineers and contractors with impeccable references and experience [Haute Cabrière] worked with [a] team of professionals and the labour department

to ensure that [the wine farm] complied and had all documents ready on [4 July] [which was] two days after the inspection

“All paperwork was deemed satisfactory [on that day] from the department and work has recommenced ”

The department confirmed the inspection formed part of a broader effort to monitor and enforce compliance with key legislation, including the Basic Conditions of Employment Act, the National Minimum Wage Act, the Occupational Health and Safety Act, the Unemployment Insurance Act, and the Compensation for Occupational Injuries and Diseases Act

Eikestadnuus contacted Ngalo, who is also spokesperson for the national DEL, for further comment, but no response was received at the time of going to print Haute Cabrière said it couldn’t comment about the labour inspectors’ grievances

Solo hiker caught in storm rescued

An international visitor experienced a terrible Friday night when he had to be rescued in the Jonkershoek Nature Reserve after getting lost on his solo hike

The 18-year-old Russian tourist was rescued last Friday (4 July), after spending a cold and wet night alone in the nature reserve following an emergency while hiking the challenging Panorama Circuit Trail

A statement from Wilderness Search And Rescue (WSAR) Western Cape, a network of government agencies and civilian volunteer organisations which partner in search and rescue, said the teenager began his hike at 10:00 on Thursday 3 July)

He apparently researched Cape Town hiking routes online, was equipped for the trail under normal conditions, but did not anticipate the intensity of the rainfall nor the significant change to the landscape brought by the weather

By late afternoon on Thursday the worsening weather had turned paths into shallow streams leaving some sections of the trail impassable

“His route was ultimately blocked by a torrent of water surging down the mountain,” the WSAR statement explained “Unable to proceed, he attempted to retrace his steps At 16:00 he managed to send a message to a friend saying he was tired and in trouble His phone battery died before he could share more details ”

With the drop in temperature overnight and no shelter, the resourceful hiker sought refuge among rocks while using the natural cover to protect himself WSAR Western Cape, along with CapeNature members, mobilsed more than 20 volunteers and professionals on Friday morning after the alarm was raised The team used the teenage hiker’s GPS data from his last known phone location and dispatched members into the reserve At 14:44 on Friday afternoon the hiker was found near the entrance of the local

reserve

According to WSAR Western Cape the hiker managed to retrace his steps at first light and slowly made his way back to safety

“He was assessed on site by a Western Cape government Health and Wellness EMS paramedic, treated for hypothermia, and then transported to hospital for further medical care,” WSAR added “The operation concluded at 16:28 on Friday ” David Nel, a spokesperson for WSAR, said this incident highlighted how quickly things

can go wrong in the mountains “We strongly encourage all outdoor enthusiasts to take weather warnings seriously and prioritise safety at all times

Always review the weather forecast before heading out If conditions look risky, delay your hike Never hike alone; being with others can be lifesaving in emergencies ” He advised hikers to be prepared by wearing appropriate clothing, carrying enough food and water and having essential emergency gear Knowing one’s limits is also

important, Nel said, so choosing trails that match one’s fitness and experience levels is important “We are deeply grateful to our incredible rescue teams for their tireless dedication and swift response, and we extend our best wishes to the hiker for a full and speedy recovery ” Hikers and outdoor lovers going on an adventure are advised to save and share the emergency number, 021 937 0300.

‘Kunsmatige Intelligensie is hier’

“Dit bied egter struikelblokke sowel as geleenthede.

Artwork taking shape

A special artwork is being created to mark the 20th anniversary of the Stellenbosch International Chamber Music Festival (SICMF)

The portrait of the late Archbishop-emeritus Desmond Tutu, a beloved patron of the festival will soon come to life at the US Konservatorium. The commemorative piece, created by renowned South African pointillist Gavin Rain, was commissioned by Professor Nina Schumann, the artistic director of the popular festival Rain, an artist from Cape Town, has held exhibitions in the Mother City, Johannesburg, Venice, Miami and other cities As in a woodcut he transforms gradients into alternating light and dark planes

Rain ordinarily works on a large canvas with small circles, each typically containing concentric circles in five different colours The larger the circles

the less the white of the canvas is visible and the darker the general image

Based on the same principle of light and dark, the commissioned work will feature a new technique not seen anywhere else in the world The work will be made up of 1 098 individual circles, each representing a dot in Rain’s signature style and engraved with a message from the SICMF community

Instead of using colour the circles will all be mounted at mathematically calculated angles, in this way creating the shading needed to bring the face of Tutu out when viewed from a specific vantage point The finished work will be roughly 3 m x 3 m in length and breadth

Asked about the conception, Schumann said: “I was thinking about the sense of community the SICMF has created, how it resonates with so many people in such different ways, and I wanted to come up with something that reflected that togetherness and could be lasting Then I thought of the Wailing Wall in Jerusalem and the idea of an artwork made up of messages popped up into my head!

“I met Gavin when I was at school and have been a huge admirer of his work So I contacted him in January and pitched the idea He told me it was impossible to do, but

NOTICE OF LAND DEVELOPMENTAPPLICATION

that he is all in! The artwork takes on special significance because it is the effort of every individual in the SICMF that contributes to the beauty of the whole ”

Messages from past participants, performing artists, regular audience members and supporters from the last two decades have been integrated into this one-of-a-kind tribute

Peter Martens, SICMF director, expressed his thanks for the enthusiastic support for the unique project “The project has also garnered the endorsement of the Archbishop Tutu Intellectual Property Trust ”

The permanent installation is being assembled outside the US Konservatorium building, at the base of the staircase leading to the Behrens Foyer over the SICMF, which runs until this Sunday (13 July) Many will be able to see “The Arch’s” likeness taking shape Tickets for the festival are available online through Webtickets

Zara claims gold, district colours

At just seven-years-old gymnast Zara Williams is proof that dynamite comes in small packages.

The talented athlete from Ida’s Valley, is a member of the Van Der Stel Gymnastics Club

Despite only taking up the sport gymnastics in February, Zara has already won two gold medals. She claimed first place at the recent Western Cape Provincial Championship in Saldanha Bay on the West Coast. “I found out about gymnastics at age five and it is fun. My favourite is the uneven bars, floor, beam and floor pit,” she says.

The Delicuim Private School learner had a strong start to her gymnastic career, also winning gold when she competed in her club’s competition and achieved silver in the Winelands District Competition held in Paarl.

Of the competition on the West Coast, Zara says it felt good to compete and, despite the scale of the competition, she wasn’t nervous, but rather excited.

Proud mother Charne explains that the junior level at which Zara competes means she doesn’t participate in national competitions. However, her gold medal secured her qualification for district colours.

Even when she isn’t training, Zara seems to be on the move doing cartwheels, jumping around and playing games at home. She already has long-

term plans to continue her gymnastics so she can one day visit the USA, Japan and Italy to participate in international competitions. “I want to go to America one day, so I can take part in the Olympics,” the little dynamite declared.

The Maties Canoe Club claimed the Giel van Deventer Trophy at the end of the Berg River Canoe Marathon for the first time.

The annual 223 km canoe trek, spanning four days from Paarl to Velddrif, is widely regarded as one of the toughest river races in the world.

This year the Berg started on Wednesday 2 July and saw paddlers reach the West Coast on Saturday 5 July, no different than before, with each of the four stages presenting new challenges

Despite three paddlers from the Stellenbosch-based canoe club withdrawing from the race due to illness and injury, the Maties still managed to produce an exceptional number of finishers, secur-

ing the Giel van Deventer Trophy for the first time. The trophy is awarded to the club with the most Berg finishers, and 17 Maties made it over the finish line this past Saturday.

Special milestones were reached by four Maties paddlers, when Rachel van Deventer, James Sharpe, Stefan Erlank, and Joshua Glyn-Cuthbert completed their first Berg. On the other side of the scale was the club’s veteran paddlers, affectionately known as the “Turbo Toppies”, who brought a wealth of experience and passion to the race Among the “Toppies” were Gerhard Beukes, who completed his 42nd Berg, Johan Serdyn his 35th and Francois Meyer his tenth

This year’s edition brought unexpected adversity, particularly for student

paddlers Glyn-Cuthbert and Tayla Isaac, who both fell ill the night before day 3 of the race. Nevertheless, they persevered through the race’s longest 73 km stage, finishing not only the day but the full race

Glyn-Cuthbert made a strong comeback on day 4, finishing sixth overall for the day.

Adding to the club’s display of endurance eas Carel Botha, who completed the Berg just weeks after finishing both the Comrades Marathon and the Freedom Challenge, covering nearly 2 500 km in one month.

More than just a race, the Berg is a true test of endurance that demands careful strategy, resilience and preparation. Paddlers must manage their nutri-

tion, their fatigue, protect their equipment and bodies, and avoid illness from the river water or overnight stops. The physical toll is immense, so the mental strength required is even greater

The following Maties paddlers successfully completed the 2025 Berg River Canoe Marathon: Joshua Glyn-Cuthbert, Conrad Kriel, Dawid Malherbe (GM, third), Stefan Erlank, Armand van Niekerk, Rachel van Deventer (under-23, second), Daantjie Malan (GGM, second), Francois Meyer, Gerhard Beukes (GGM, third), James Sharpe, Tayla Isaac (under-23, third), Schalk Smit (winner of Peninsula Iron Man and SGM, second), Barry Muller, Johan Serdyn (super GM, second), Johan van Rooyen (Legend, first), Adie de Kock and Carel Botha.

Rugbylegende onthou wedstryd vir Baabaas

AvrilFillies

“Benewens hom en my pa het my ma, Rebecca, my broer Roger en my vrou, Venessa, my altyd ondersteun Saam met Dougie Dyers het Williams my as speler gebrei, maar ook as jong man ’n invloed op my persoonlike lewe gehad,” sê hy

SKUIFNASENTERVIRDEURBRAAK
