Eskom has confirmed that Unit 1 of the Koeberg Nuclear Power Station, currently offline for long-term maintenance, will return to service later than expected. Originally scheduled to be back online this month (July), the unit is now set to return by the end of August.
According to Eskom, the delay is due to additional maintenance needed on the new steam generators During routine inspections specifically a method called eddy current testing defects were found in four tubes out of thousands These defects were addressed immediately through an advanced automated repair process, carried out by international specialists and local teams
“Our top priority is always the safety of our employees, the public and the environment,” said Bheki Nxumalo, Eskom’s Group Executive for Generation “Carrying out these additional inspections and repairs to world-class standards, we are investing in the long-term reliability of Koeberg and South Africa’s energy future ”
SAFETYTESTS
Eskom also announced that all critical safety tests have been passed, including

Each unit is tailored to accommodate the waste load specific to its location and is designed to trap materials such as plastic packaging, polystyrene and other floating rubbish, the most common pollutants found in Cape Town’s rivers and canals With interceptors now in place at the Bayside Canal and Milnerton’s tributaries, the City anticipates a measurable reduction in solid waste reaching the sensitive Rietvlei wetland system and Milnerton Lagoon, which are both ecological hot spots and important recreational spaces for residents and visitors alike
BROADERROLLOUTACROSSTHECITY
Beyond Table View and Milnerton, the 20 interceptors have been strategically installed in all four regions of the city: Eastern region: Includes Soet River, Klein Canal and Sir Lowry’s Pass River Northern region: Locations include the Bonteheuwel Canal, Spoordam Pond and Amandel Dam Central region: One at the Bayside Canal in Table View, one at the Sati River in Sati Road, Milnerton, one at the Milnerton Riding Club and one at the Jakkalsvlei Canal, Langa Southern region: Interceptors have been placed in the Big Lotus and Bokmanspruit Rivers, among others

the legally required 10-year Integrated Leak Rate Test This test involved pressurising the reactor building over 72 hours to ensure it remains structurally sound and airtight a key safety requirement
Despite the extended timeline, Eskom says this will not increase the risk of loadshedding The national electricity grid is currently stable, and Koeberg Unit 2 remains fully operational, delivering close to 950MW with an Energy Availability Factor (EAF) of over 99%
“The planned return of 2 500MW this winter is not dependent on Unit 1,” Eskom said “Our latest Winter Outlook remains valid, and loadshedding will not be necessary if unplanned outages stay below 13 000MW ” Once maintenance is completed, Unit 1 will be refuelled, tested, and reconnected to the grid Eskom stressed that Koeberg’s two units are never taken offline at the same time, ensuring that the power station continues to contribute significantly to the country’s electricity needs

Badroodien emphasised: “We remain committed to improving water quality in our rivers and waterways The installation of these waste interceptors will significantly enhance our ability to extract solid waste from the system, ensuring long-term protection of our ecosystems ” ReThinkTheStink welcomed the interceptors in a post on Facebook last week “Good to see progress,” wrote Caroline Marx

Even in the chill of winter, the coastline draws curious explorers to its rock pools and tidal edges but beneath the surface, a fragile scene of life, sacrifice and survival is quietly playing out. As people take to the shore during low tide for a winter stroll, marine conservationists are urging the public to tread carefully, especially around rocky areas where octopus mothers are guarding their eggs with silent devotion
One such plea comes from local ocean advocate Zoë Prinsloo of Save a Fishie, who has taken to social media and community platforms to spread the word "If you come across octopus eggs during low tide, please don’t touch them and definitely don’t take the mother," she says “She’s not abandoned or dead She’s guarding her babies with the last of her strength ”
These clusters of white, bead-like eggs are often hidden in crevices or under rocks along the shoreline What many don’t realise is that just beneath them, a female octopus sits in silence, guarding her brood She does not eat, she does not move she stays until her body gives out, solely to ensure her babies survive
“It’s one of the most selfless acts in the animal kingdom,” Prinsloo adds “But every time someone pokes around or removes her or the eggs, that entire cycle is broken It’s heartbreaking because most people just don’t know " With hatching season typically occurring in late August or early September this g
NSRIexpands EmergencyOpsCentre

The National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) has unveiled a major expansion of its Emergency Operations Centre (EOC) at the Volunteer Support Centre in Cape Town nearly doubling the facility’s size and significantly enhancing its real-time response capabilities This critical upgrade boosts the NSRI’s capacity to coordinate rescue operations, monitor coastal activity, and respond rapidly to emergencies across the country
A key driver of the expansion is the rapid rollout of the NSRI’s Beach Safety Camera system, which includes a flagship site in Bloubergstrand Bloubergstrand was one of the original four camera locations along with Strand, Kleinmond, and Herold’s Bay that helped launch the initiative Since then, thanks to generous donor support, the network has grown to include Victoria Bay, Nature’s Valley, and three additional systems in Plettenberg Bay
The Bloubergstrand camera in particular plays a pivotal role in covering one of Cape Town’s most popular and windexposed beaches, where conditions can change quickly and draw large crowds
The footage from this location has already proven invaluable in alerting NSRI teams to potential hazards and enabling swift, informed responses
TygerBurger reported last year ("Smile! You’re on the Big Bay Surf camera", 8 February 2024) of the Big Bay Surf Camera which went live on Christmas Day Since the launch of the live feed, their analytics have shown interest around the globe
"The expansion necessitated a larger, more advanced control room at the EOC to support this growing camera infrastructure The redesigned operations hub now nearly doubles the previous floor and wall space and features modern, stateof-the-art, display screens These upgrades allow operators to view clearer, highresolution visuals, improving their ability to detect risks, monitor environmental shifts, and coordinate rescue efforts with
Targeted clean-up operation tacklesTableView hot spots

A collaborative effort between the City of Cape Town’s Displaced Persons Unit, the Table View Community Clean-Up group, and the local Community Policing Forum (CPF) led to a large-scale clean-up operation in Table View last week The initiative was aimed at addressing several high-visibility hotspots frequently flagged by residents through service delivery reports and C3 notifications
Ward councillor Jonathan Mills, who has been actively engaging with community groups to address public safety and urban management concerns, praised the collaborative spirit of the operation and encouraged ongoing public participation in reporting local issues
linked to displaced persons or informal settlements that arise in public spaces such as greenbelts, sidewalks, and open fields While these situations require sensitive handling, Mills noted that maintaining public order and ensuring hygiene and safety for all residents is a top priority
The Displaced Persons Unit plays a central role in this process, balancing enforcement with the provision of social support services During operations like this, field workers engage with individuals found living on the streets, offering access to shelters and other support programmes, while law enforcement and clean-up teams restore affected public spaces
THE KEY DRIVER OF THE EXPANSION IS THE ROLLOUT OF THE NSRI’S BEACH SAFETY CAMERA SYSTEM

The facility now accommodates multiple operators, support staff, supervisors, and even visitors during major incidents a significant step up from the previous setup, which could house only one or two people This new capacity ensures more efficient communication and faster decision-making, especially during highpressure emergencies
With emergency coordination at its core, the upgraded space was designed to reflect best practices in layout and workflow A new shift structure ensures a consistent two-operator presence, with flexibility to scale up when needed A dedicated EOC Supervisor oversees daily operations, supporting both routine monitoring and complex incident response
"Importantly, the expansion also lays the foundation for future growth The facility now supports training for new operators and allows for remote access meaning volunteers across the country, including those monitoring key sites like Blouberg, can contribute in real time This scalable model ensures greater national coverage and quicker alerts for potential incidents
"As South Africa’s coastline continues to present unpredictable and sometimes dangerous conditions, the NSRI’s improved infrastructure allows for faster, more proactive intervention The Blouberg site remains a cornerstone in this effort a critical eye on the water that helps protect both locals and visitors in one of the country’s busiest seaside areas "
With over 50 stations, satellite bases, and lifeguard containers in its national network, the NSRI’s upgraded Emergency Operations Centre reinforces a deep commitment to public safety, innovation, and saving lives
“We’re committed to tackling community issues,” said Mills “Because you report issues and log service requests, we can use that information to make sure that our service delivery and interventions are focused where they’re needed most ”

The clean-up targeted areas that had seen a build-up of waste, unauthorised structures, and safety concerns, particularly those raised by residents over recent weeks These hotspots are often
The CPF and Table View Community Clean-Up have also been instrumental in mobilising volunteers and resources to keep the area clean and safe The CPF, in particular, continues to act as a crucial bridge between residents, law enforcement, and City departments Mills emphasised that sustained improvement relies on continuous feedback from the public “Please keep logging C3 requests, calling in to the call centers, and letting us know what needs doing,” he urged “Every logged issue helps us prioritise better and hold departments accountable ”

Decades later, still no action
Thanks for highlighting problems brought up by residents at a public meeting ( "Residents call for Action", Tygerburger 15 July)
I intentionally did not attend the meeting as I knew it would be yet another talkshop - as usual! What was new? 20 year-old issues! Since 2016 the existing problems simply escalated
After years of criticism I endeared because of my stance against ward 26/27 it was with gratitude that Vasco topped the onslaught of irate residents
We even had Dan Plato then mayor with a busload of councillors tour the area decades ago Result? Zilch!
When Clive Justus was councillor, I raised the issue of the squatters who initially erected shacks at Wingfield
Subsequently the present regime housed illegal
Ek wil graag iets van my hart af kry

moeilike situasie is?
Ons het almal al gehoor: “Moet nie laat jou regterhand weet wat jou linkerhand doen nie
En dan is daar ook die Popi-wet wat blykbaar heeltemal geïgnoreer word
As jy sop wil uitdeel of skenkings wil maak – fantasties!

Road markings raise safety concerns
In the article “Road markings missing” of 16 July, one is not sure what the City means by “capacity constraints”, but whatever it means, it reflects on service delivery As missing road markings creates a safety risk, it can be seen as an essential service which the City must deliver and of course, also maintain We are however of the opinion that there is also a problem with the service providers who delivers an inferior service If they add too much water with the paint it does not last long enough and there are no consequences and responsibility, they are paid as if it was a job well done
In the article “Safety audit suggested on dangerous road” also of 16 July we totally agree with Cllr Bresler “due to a shortage of manpower there is a general lack of visible traffic police on neighbourhood roads”
However we are of the opinion it is more a lack of effective policing!
Maybe it is time for a Local Dialogue on these issues as well as others, and it does not have to cost R700 million
