ConvenedbytheWesternCape Governmentthesummit,held inCenturyCityonTuesday17 June,aimedtoassesstheimpact ofextortionontheprovince's economy,aswellasidentify gapsinhowlaw-enforcement authoritiesareaddressingit.
Stakeholdersattendingthe discussionincludedofficialsfrom severalprovincialgovernment departments,theCityofCape Town,thepolice,representatives ofthebusinesscommunityand civilsociety.

ENFORCEMENTUNITS
ColAndréTraut,provincial commander,saidtoensure afocusedandcoordinated responsetoextortionpolicehave establishedtwokeyenforcement units.Theseincludeaprovincial extortiontaskteam,comprising provincialdetectivesspecialising ininvestigatingextortion-related crimes.
"Thisunit'sprimaryroleis togatherintelligence,conduct surveillanceandbuildstrong casesforprosecution,andthey arehardatworkwiththeirtask."
ThesecondunitisanIntegrated ExtortionTeamcomprising police,theNationalProsecuting Authority(NPA)andotherkey role-players.
"Thisteammeetstodevise strategicinterventions,share intelligenceandexecutejoint operationstotacklecriminal syndicates,"explainedTraut.
