Kidnapped infant found unharmed
After an intensive two-day manhunt, a 9-day-old baby kidnapped from a Bellville shopping centre has been found unharmed and a 37-year-old woman has been arrested in connection with the incident
The infant was found on Monday 30 June at an address in Honolulu Street, Tafelsig, where the alleged kidnapper was also arrested and is expected to appear in the Bellville Magistrates’ Court on kidnapping charges.
“On her return,the person of interest and baby were missing,” Swartbooi related.
The distraught mother immediately reported the incident to Bellville police, prompting an urgent investigation. The Bellville Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit took the lead in the investigation, opening a case of kidnapping

There is light in the tunnel for the people of the Maroela South housing project in Kraaifontein after two years of living in a ghost town. Since its completion in 2023, 117 residents who excitedly moved into the state-subsidised BNG homes have been living without electricity or street lighting.

The project involves the construction of 395 BNG houses and 175 Gap houses
By October 2024 the situation had become untenable for residents who were sitting ducks for criminals in the dark neighbourhood, where three murders and several armed robberies had occurred by then

The City of Cape Town's ethics and forensics department issued a call to residents particularly the youth to help combat fraud, corruption, online misinformation, and scams by reporting suspicious activities to the City’s Fraud Hotline
"Our world is rapidly changing and technological advances bring opportunities and challenges," said the City's Mayco member for finance, Siseko Mbandezi
“One clear trend is the rise in online fake news and fraud, particularly involving scammers who falsely claim to offer City services or who threaten residents with consequences unless they make payments We’re also seeing a significant spread of misinformation whether by fraudsters, those with certain agendas, or via AI-generated content and imagery ”
Mbandezi further highlighted the danger of information overload
Always pause, assess, and verify before forwarding social media posts Check the source, scrutinise branding and email addresses, and search for individuals mentioned to see whether the information can be substantiated

The City continues to face a high number of both in-person and online scams, particularly related to housing, where individuals solicit payments from residents in exchange for placement on the housing waiting list
