Whatinitiallybeganasa welcomedlocalfoodmarkethas sincedrawncriticismfromsome neighbourswhosaythetrucks havebecomeadisturbance.
Reportssuggestissuesranging fromnoiseandtrafficto questionsaroundsafetyandlongtermintentionsforthesite.
AccordingtotheCityofCape Town,theorganiserhadinitially appliedforandwasgrantedthe necessaryeventpermits.
“Theorganiserhasapplied forpermitsandwasapproved fortheeventtheyhostedover thelastcoupleofweeks.The eventorganisersmetallthe requirementstobeissuedwitha permit,”theCityconfirmed.
However,justweekslater,the Cityconfirmedthatthepermit hadbeenrevoked.“Dueto challengesrelatedtothelocation ofthemarket,venuepermission

Foreignnationalswereinitially relocatedtothetwosites–WingfieldandPaintCity-under Covid-19levelfivelockdown emergencyregulations,and aftertheHighCourtgranted theirevictionfromGreen MarketSquareandtheCentral MethodistChurch.Atthetime, theforeignnationalscitedfears ofxenophobiaanddemanded relocationtoEuropeorCanada, whichisnotlawfullypossible.
Thedepartmentofhome affairs(DHA)completedvarious repatriationanddeportation processes,andwiththe assistanceoftheCityandNPO’s hundredsofforeignnationals werealsoreintegratedbackinto theirlocalcommunitiesoforigin.
DHAandUNHCRprocesses havelongconcludedatboth sites,withanevictionnow beingsoughtfortheremaining unlawfuloccupantswhohave refusedalloffersofsupport, andwhocontinuetoinsiston relocationtoaplaceoutsideof SouthAfricaortheircountriesof birth.
Many,ifnotall,ofthe respondentsareinfamilyunits andmeaningfullyengagedin self-sustainingeconomicactivity whileremaininginunlawful occupationwiththeaimto leveragethisforrepatriationto first-worldcountries.
UNLAWFULOCCUPANTS
Around160unlawfuloccupants remainattheWingfieldsite –underthecustodianshipof nationalpublicworks–while around200remainatthe City-ownedPaintCitysitein Bellville.Violenthostilityexists betweenfactionsoftheunlawful occupants,aswellastowardslaw enforcementauthorities.
