Community welcomes plan for new police station

The Mfuleni Community Policing Forum (CPF) has applauded the City of Cape Town’s decision to make space available in the local municipal building for a dedicated police office a move aimed at strengthening safety and accessibility for the community

The announcement was made after a meeting between the minister of police, Prof Firoz Cachalia, and the Mayor of Cape Town, Geordin Hill-Lewis, as part of his ongoing engagement with local government stakeholders to address crime and policing challenges in the city

COMMUNITYENGAGEMENTS

In a statement the City describes the meeting as "a series of community stakeholder engagements, where the minister had the opportunity to hear directly from residents about the safety concerns they face daily"

In Mfuleni, one of the central issues raised by the community was the lack of a dedicated police station Residents expressed deep frustration that the current station, situated in Blue Downs, does not adequately serve the rapidly growing population of Mfuleni and fails to meet their safety and service delivery needs

In response to this concern, and as a direct outcome of the meeting, Hill-Lewis has agreed to make available 380 m² of office space in the municipal building in Mfuleni

This space will be made available to the police and will serve as a dedicated police station for Mfuleni residents

While the scope of services to be provided from this site is still being finalised, this interim solution is a significant and immediate step towards improving police

visibility and accessibility for the Mfuleni community," read the statement from the mayor's office

MOREPLANS

The Mayor has also offered the police the adjoining erf for the future construction of a fully-fledged police station "I commend the mayor and the City of Cape Town for this demonstration of cooperative governance in action It is through such practical and responsive partnerships that we will begin to rebuild trust between communities and law enforcement,” stated Cachalia

Hill-Lewis said: “The City gladly offers urgent help for the police to establish a fully-fledged police station in Mfuleni

This is a very hard hit area and crime must urgently be brought under control to make the community safer for residents Working together, the City and the police can be a far greater force in the fight against crime ”

Frans Mashaba, chair of the CPF, says they are waiting for the new plan to be implemented "We hope then that the police station in Blue Downs will be called Blue Downs Police Station and the new one will be called Mfuleni Police Station," says Mashaba It has been an oddity for years that the current station in Blue Downs, situated next to the Blue Downs court, is called the Mfuleni Police Station But Justin April, a resident from Silversands, a neighbourhood situated behind the current station, says he does not care about names "If Mfuleni gets their own station, maybe we can get more police focussing on our areas, because we are seeing a rise in crime and the police cannot attend to our matters," he says

Septembermarks ChildhoodCancerMonth

September is the month usually associated with the beginning of Spring and the month in which South Africans celebrate their heritage

The month however also marks Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, a time dedicated to shining a light on the courage of children fighting cancer, the resilience of their families, and the tireless efforts of healthcare teams who journey alongside them, the provincial health department said in a statement last week

At Tygerberg Hospital, children are not defined by their diagnosis, the department said Instead, they are fighters, dreamers and survivors whose stories inspire hope With access to modern therapies provided in paediatric oncology units, many childhood cancers can now be cured, offering families the promise of brighter tomorrows, the department said

"These days, most children with cancer can be cured by modern therapy given in a paediatric oncology unit After treatment completion, it is important for survivors to attend a survivorship clinic to monitor their development and detect and manage any complications or so-called effects of the cancer or its treatment, explains Prof Anel van Zyl, paediatric oncologist at Tygerberg Hospital

Four-year-old Stanton Saaiman from Delft was diagnosed with neuroblastoma in January last year By then, the cancer had already spread to his bones and bone marrow Despite the challenges, Stanton responded well to chemotherapy, took part in an innovative research study using targeted radioactive therapy, and bravely

CHILDREN ARE NOT DEFINED BY THEIR DIAGNOSIS

underwent surgery and radiotherapy, the department said

This month, he will complete his treatment and continue his journey at the hospital's childhood cancer survivorship clinic

IMPACTONFAMILIES

His mother, Alethia, explains their journey with the disease

"When I heard the words stage-four cancer, my world collapsed But Stanton was so strong that I decided never to cry again His bravery gave us strength as a family Today, we thank God, the doctors, and the community for carrying us through In February, when we celebrated that he was cancer-free, we held hands as a family to thank God for his faithfulness," she said

The department said early diagnosis remains the key to saving lives

"Parents, caregivers, and the community should be alert to persistent symptoms such as unexplained fevers, weight loss, fatigue, pallor, or lumps and swellings If a child shows signs like vision changes, bone pain, headaches, or persistent bleeding, they must be evaluated urgently Early detection saves lives," said Van Zyl

If your child shows any of the warning signs of childhood cancer, it is important to seek medical help without delay

The public can access care in the following way:

Start by visiting your nearest clinic or

family doctor for an initial check-up If further investigation is required, your child will be referred to a district or regional hospital

Children suspected of having cancer are referred to a specialist paediatric oncology unit, such as the one at the Tygerberg Hospital, where diagnosis and treatment are provided

THINKING OUT LOUD LEWENSKIEKIE

The Christmas pox

It’s September, which is Spring and Heritage Month but also mine and my hubby’s birthday months

Yay! To me this means booking all those lekker free trips that become available in this month only but it also means prepping for Christmas Christmas is a big deal in our family and I prefer to start prepping now before prices get inflated for Black Friday “sales” and festive season madness

This year especially I would like to have a special Christmas with my family because not only have we had a hard year but last year Christmas was spent in quarantine because our family were ‘poxxed’ It began in early November when my middle daughter came home with a blister on her wrist Parents in the know are already groaning yes, it was chickenpox I sprang into protocol mode: isolation, Allergex, calamine, Panado generics, and a message to her teacher

The teacher replied with a crying emoji

My daughter was the fifth in her class, and by year-end 11 had caught it, part of a mini-outbreak that overlapped with exams

You’re probably thinking: “Vaccines!” Well, I’m not anti-vax I’m pedantic about every other jab but I’ve never been sold on the chickenpox one It’s expensive, not on the state schedule, requires boosters, and may even be linked to shingles spikes in some countries So, I let nature take its course

Sure enough, chickenpox’s virality meant the others were likely doomed except my eldest, who’d had it at two The next day my youngest and second youngest

broke into a rash

In case you’re counting on your fingers and struggling to keep up, let me clarify, I have seven daughters

The rash faded quickly, probably allergies, but I wasn’t sure But first, let me explain my own bizarre immunity I’m the eldest of four, my mother’s sickliest child, asthmatic and allergic to half the planet, yet I never caught chickenpox despite multiple exposures including from my youngest sister, from my eldest daughter, and even while working at Red Cross Hospital A blood test later confirmed I am immune, though how remains a mystery I briefly considered the vaccine but the test spared me the decision Naturally, my teens hoped I’d passed this magic gene down When my middle child recovered, second eldest taunted her mercilessly, certain she’d dodged the virus Then, the day before her final exam, the blisters appeared A doctor confirmed her mild case, which only added to her smugness Until my fourth daughter got it She missed her prizegiving and, by the time she recovered, mid-December had arrived Just as we thought it was over, my second eldest, the prideful mocker, caught it again rare but possible I did feel for her, though Her 15th birthday was a week before Christmas, and her beach party plans dissolved in a sea of blisters With second eldest sick, we were officially housebound for Christmas As she recovered, my third eldest sprouted a blister, then my youngest on her eye, so New Year’s was equally subdued By January we were three months into the saga, with only my second youngest untouched Sure enough, the day before school started, a blister appeared on her lip My excited little Grade R missed her first weeks thanks to chickenpox By then, the pox had finally had its one-at-a-time way with every one of my children and made last Christmas (cue George Michael) the one forever marked in family lore as the year of the Christmas Pox - LAUREN O’CONNOR-MAY

WAARISONSWAGTER?

Moderne wonderwerk gebeur

Business man arrested in Durbanville

I would like to express my shock and disgust at the incident in Durbanville ("Sakeman in hegtenis vir skoot op messteker", TygerBurger 17 September), in which a concerned businessman was trying to save someone's life and, after using physical force on the attacker, had to resort to using a firearm to avoid a murder or further injury to the victim

The report stipulates that he reported this to the police, only to get arrested for attempted murder

What was he supposed to do? Just stand back and watch and let the criminal do as he pleased?

Instead of thanking him, the police locked him up for the night Unbelievable!

I hope he sues the police for tarnishing his name

Can someone please get clarity on what the police would like the public to do when they encounter any type of criminal offence?

Should we just stand and watch and wait for someone to die?

It seems if you don't have a red beret and overalls you're likely to get arrested at the drop of a hat Stopthecrazy,BRACKENFELL

fences, gates, and rules plastered on signs But how often do you see six or more unrelated children freely playing together? When we design for rules instead of for joy, we design out community Mr Andrews I urge you: Let us redesign some of our recreational spaces with skateboarding in mind Create safe, well-maintained parks that welcome skateboarders, cyclists, and skaters Let Cape Town become the city that proudly says: We did not forget our youth! Imagine the pride if one day a South African skateboarder, who credits the design of the Durbanville skatepark for providing the foundation needed to develop their skills, should carry our flag at the Olympic Games That story begins with a decision we make now TristanBellingan,HOOGSTEDE
